Do you find motherhood overwhelming? Have you been doing it for a few years and are still waiting for it to get easier? I know exactly how that feels. When I found out I was going to be a mom, I was completely unprepared.

Once that urine-soaked stick changed, the only thing my 30 years of experience provided was complete and utter panic. I was a teacher, for goodness sakes. I nurtured and cared for other people's children. I wasn't ready to take on my own child. Besides, I did teenagers, and it would be years before my baby would even be a tween. What was I going to do until then?

On our daughter's birth day, after 5 days of labor, they handed her to me. As they laid that squalling, writhing, quivering mess on my chest, she stopped mid-yell to look at me. Through the trepidation and exhaustion, we connected. I was a mom. That's when I apologized for all the mistakes I was going to make.

I spent the next decade or so worrying about messing up her life. I used all the skills I had developed as a teacher, and channeled them into parenting. I made mistakes (like forgetting the occasional birthday cake), but she seemed to recover nicely.

It wasn't until I reversed engineered my college-age daughter that I recognized what a fabulous job I had done. I hadn't ruined her life. She is an impressive, energetic, intelligent, young woman (objectively speaking). Somehow, despite my abundant fears, I turned out to be an Awesome Mom.

I sure wish I had known that while I was in the middle of it all. But motherhood can be pretty isolating at times. Without someone to hear your thoughts, self-perceptions never get challenged.

I'm sure many of you reading this consider yourselves as merely adequate moms, which is a shame, because, in fact, you are Awesome Moms.

-Awesome Moms create opportunities for their families.
-Awesome Moms seek knowledge, which is power.
-Awesome Moms build daughters into women, and sons into men.
-Awesome Moms change the world one child at a time.
-Awesome Moms make mistakes, and then correct (most of) them.
-Awesome Moms try and try and try. Then they go to sleep, and in the morning they try again.

That's what makes you awesome.

FAIRLY SAFE (LOVE OF FAIRS BOOK 2)

Deborah Ann Davis' latest novel, Fairly Safe, is based on a legend: Once upon a time a magical tree existed. To keep the magic safe, the tree was cut into boards and used to build a Gypsy Kissing Booth. On your birth date if kissed on these boards your fate is sealed.

Birthday Kisses Married By Christmas!

STORY LINE OF FAIRLY SAFE:

First, I must say, Author Deborah Ann Davis' Fairly Safe is a wonderful romance with mystery and intrigue. Jacob has never known security or love of family. A product of the uncaring foster system he has always longed for a family, love, unity, and security.

Through extraordinary circumstances, he acquires a mentor in wealthy William Randall Hatch, III. William has secrets only a trusted few are privy; he met his only love at a fair and kissed her on the boards of the Gypsy Kissing Booth. William has an uncommon fascination in attending fairs all over the country with Jacob as chauffeur and his Butler, Hanson, as a some times companion.

Cassie, Sam, and Robin have known the love and security of family. However, their lives have taken a 360 degree turn after placement in the Witness Protection Program and the loss of their parents. As fate would have it, Jake and William are attending a fair when Jake sees Cassie and his heart goes pitter-patter. Yes, you guessed it, Cassie and Jake kiss on the boards. Cassie flits in and out of Jake's life; Jake looks for Cassie at every fair he and William attend. Cassie turns up time and again at the same fair.

Circumstances will bring the three siblings into Jacob's world. Jacob will battle his own insecurities to keep the siblings safe.

Family, security, and safety are synonymous. What would you do if your family was not safe and secure? Could you keep them safe from the evil elements following them? What plans would you make to keep them safe? Come along on a roller coaster ride of love, security, and happy-ever-after in this wonderful fairy-tale of love, laughter, family and the Kissing Booth.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT OF FAIRLY SAFE:

First of all, Fairly Safe is a fun-filled romp; full of laughter, love, secrets, and mystery. I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of the siblings, Jacob, William, and their household staff; a staff which author Deborah Ann Davis masterfully integrated into family. As a result, Ms. Davis skillfully presented the fact that blood does not make a family.

In addition, Ms. Davis had more than a few plot threads she skillfully brought together. Furthermore, the story-line in Fairly Safe was original and refreshing as she led us from one point to another. As a result, I wanted to read this novel straight through. Most noteworthy is Ms Davis' talent of keeping the mystery, intrigue, romance, and secrets at top peak. Consequently, the book held my interest in characters which I felt I knew and had to come to love.

What's more, the pace of the Fairly Safe was correct for the length of the story with plot and character development which was spot on. I found her portrayal of family unity and love endearing and realistic. As a result, her characters are lovable and feel real to the reader.

In concluding the review of the plot, characters, and development, Fairly Safe is a feel good read which is well-written and developed. I gave a long and heartfelt sigh as I finished this book. Ms. Davis is a talented writer with the imagination and talent to grab the reader and keep them enthralled. In addition, Ms. Davis set the hook quickly in this story and continued to hold me until the last page. Consequently, I was not ready to say goodbye to Cassie, Jake, and the gang.

RECOMMENDATION FOR FAIRLY SAFE: 5 STARS

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a solid clean story filled with laughter, romance, and mystery. I loved this book and look forward to the next installment in this series. This book is a standalone read.

As a final note: I received this book from the author in return for an honest book review. Book reviews of any novel are dependent on the book review author’s opinion; consequently all book reviews on line and on my blog, are my opinion.

I personally love reading books about people who grew up a foster child and have come a long way. Jacob was one of those children. He has done so much with his life and seems to have a strong, happy life now. And yet he keeps searching for that one girl who is always at the fair with him and William.

He finds the girl he wants in his life and yet can't seem to keep his hands on her. That can't be easy but he finds that he can't live without her. This book delivers it's readers with a great spark of romance that grows as you read it. Throw in the thrill of a threat to his love interest and her family and the book is great.

This book keeps the readers enraptured and you will want to keep reading until that last page. And yet you will feel fulfilled once you do get to the end. You are not left with that nagging feeling that there is something missing. I highly recommend this book!

Fairly Safe is the second book in the Love of Fairs Series. Having not read the first book I was a little apprehensive about diving straight into book 2, unsure whether I would fully understand what was going on, however I had no problems with starting in the middle of the series.

The book opens in 1938 and then jumps 60 years to 1998, where we meet Jacob and Casey. The two main characters are well-rounded individuals, each with their own problematic backstory. Jacob being brought up in an orphanage, and Casey being in witness protection along with her family.

They are truly remarkable young people and Deborah Ann Davis has done a wonderful job in keeping them both very realistic, as well as likeable. Alongside Jacob and Casey there are a host of secondary characters, including William who is in the opening section in 1938, now an old man. These secondary characters for me are what makes this book. Without them, the story would never have worked.

There is a lot of laughter surrounded by plenty of emotional scenes, and scenes that may just have you on the edge of your seat. The story merges mystery with suspense, and with a hint of thriller thrown in, creates a roller-coaster that keeps you glued to the pages.

If you are after something a bit different that will play with your emotions, yet keep you gripped to the pages with the ‘what happens next’, then this is the book for you.

Jacob Kent knows all about disappointment and learned not to depend on anyone. He believes that he's happier being alone but his coworker Rita has other ideas. Jacob's current boss Neville is a sleaze bag. An older gentlemen enters Jacob's place of work turning Jacob's life upside down and right side out. William Hatch likes to visit his businesses in disguise to see how they operate and find out who the good employees from the bad ones. William mentors Jacob offering him a entry level position within his company with executive secretary Margaret Fuller. William likes to go to fairs and shows Jacob the value in them. Jacob meets Cassie Thatcher which changes his life in so many ways. Cassie knows that she should keep her survival instincts up and running all the time. Yet Cassie can't help that seeing Jacob gives her alittle hope. Will Jacob learn the reason behind William's fair travels? Will Jacob continue to see Cassie? Your answers await you in Fairly Safe.

I'll be honest I'm not a fan of starting a series in the middle of it. I did enjoy the book and characters. I felt like I was missing pieces of the puzzle at times yet it all came together. The story and characters were real, honest, raw, compelling, intriguing, and mysterious too.

Jacob's life hasn't been easy. He's had to struggle for a very long time. One day that changes when an older man takes him under his wing and gives him a job. One of Jacob's duties is to accompany his mentor to fairs in the area. The older man explained how he loved going to the fair and had actually met his wife at one. Jacob believes there is a deeper story about the fairs and he may be right.

This love story is an amazing tale of bravery, love and loyalty. The writing is superb and the characters lovable. Ms. Davis gives us a unique story in this book. I found it engaging and sweet. You'll be amaze by the depth of love contained in this book. You'll enjoy, as I did, the fun events throughout. I think this one should be in your TBR pile.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it touched my heart. ~Copy of book provided by author and I voluntarily reviewed it.

This is my first book of this genre - A romantic suspense. This is the story of Jacob, an orphan, and Casey who is in witness protection program. Casey had to give preference to her safety than her love life due to her circumstances. Jacob and Casey meet unexpectedly and it is love at first sight. Casey is a mystery girl and doesn't give any of her details to Jacob even after many meetings but is in love with Jacob. An accident gives them a chance to meet again, but will Casey run away from Jacob again?

My favourite part of the book is the suspense. The story is revealed slowly as we move, letting us know each character and their purpose. The story is narrated in the perspective of the old man William, Casey and Jacob. The mystery is maintained till 3/4th of the book on why Casey always runs away from Jacob leaving him clueless. The writing style is cool and casual. The characterization is deep enough for the readers to understand the layers of characters. I loved the gentle romance between Jacob and Casey, liked the way Jacob is protective about Casey and tries to keep her safe. I loved the way Jacob prefers Casey's safety to his love. I also loved the characterization of Hanson and Maggie. Even though the ending is predictable, the author puts together all loose ends in the climax.

I expected more romance but was disappointed. The story is medium paced and not boring. The title and cover are apt. I would recommend this to suspense lovers who also like a light read.

My Rating: 3.5/5

Ps: I have received this book in exchange for an honest review and this is my unbiased opinion on the book.

This is the second book in a series which has me totally engaged with this author. She writes a story for young adults, but I swear, I loved it and I’m nearing 70!

The author engages on many fronts. Her story telling doesn’t let the cat out of the bag. I could not foresee how the story challenges would be resolved. This read has suspense, a bit of romance, lots of complicated budding relationships, a tad bit paranormal and so beautiful in the telling, I had a hard time believing this author has only just started publishing.

It’s delightfully crafted with wonderfully well-rounded and intriguing characters from the stodgy Mr. Hanson, to the well-meaning with the best of intentions–Don, William, and Jacob, to the most adorable, little Robin. Themes within the story—family is important, search for what you want, love if meant to be, will be, follow what is right and life will take you down the right path.

It’s not easy getting inside of the minds of children, let alone these children who spend their time training, an unusual endeavor taken seriously, but the author does an excellent job shaping Casey, Sam and Robin.

*****

Jacob Kent works as a chauffeur for Lenny’s Livery. William an elderly man comes in to rent a limo, only to find he is usurped by another hot-looking client who is quickly contracted by the branch manager, Clayton Neville, for the only limo left in the shop . Clayton is described as sniveling, fawning and an opportunist.

Jacob feels bad, because William was at the shop before the hot-chick came in. To right a wrong, both he and Rita agree to help the gentleman out. The scene that follows is very telling about Jacob’s character.

Jacob tries to make his boss understand that the elder gentleman was first. Clayton, irritated beyond reason, fires Jacob and nearly fires Rita. Rita offers her car, Jacob offers his services to William. The customer must be satisfied.

Without a job, Jacob drives to Springfield, on the way to a fair, The Big E. This is where Jacob’s life takes an altogether different path by simply being at the right place and the right time—The Gypsy Kissing Booth.

I’m Fairly Certain you will love this story, and I feel Fairly Safe to tell you, if you start this series, you will read it all. A great cast to give you hours of entertainment!

MY THOUGHTS

I read Ms. Davis' first book Fairly Certain and loved it. This, the second book after just a few pages has me hooked. This book is written for YA but I certainly don't fall into that category. The book is based on a legend. A legend of a magical tree. For safe keeping of the magical tree, it was cut and a Gypsy Kissing Booth was built from the wood. The legend was if you were kissed on your birthday while standing on these magical boards, your fate was set. The author gives you a little bit of everything, a little magic, romance, suspense and mystery. This is a fun filled read with some mystery, love, a few secrets and most important, you can laugh. The characters are very well developed. I loved the lesson the author put through, blood does not a family make. Once I started moving through the pages, I found I didn't want to put it down.

You can't help but grow to love the characters. The author has made them real with real life issues. The story will touch your heart strings and you may even find a tear or two falling down your cheeks from times to times. The author delivers a well written story with a solid plot, developed characters and a desire for the reader to keep reading. On top of that it's a good clean read and we don't get a lot of that sometimes. Exceptional book. Exceptional author in my opinion. The books in this series are stand alones if you like. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, any age. Awaiting the next book in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.

I loved the premise of this book - that at a kissing booth, if you kiss on your birthday you will be married by Christmas. The characters were diverse and it added different twists to the story. There were bits of humor throughout, and a little bit of mystery/suspense at different times, but it didn't stay a mystery for very long. Man of the characters are keeping secrets which causes a lot of confusion for many of the characters, but it is all resolved in the end. There are many sweet moments too.

This is the 2nd in a series, so I'm not 100% sure what was in the first book and how it ties to this one (if at all other than the kissing booth).

I did receive a copy of this book so these comments are based on what I received, and not sure if it is a final copy or not. There were a few times where I felt like the story was disjointed and I felt lost or that the story didn't flow well in a few spots. I didn't quite get William Hatch's age/marriage/timeline. I know the prologue is about him, and then the next chapter starts and says 60 years later, but I thought while reading that William said he had 60 years with his wife. Considering they met at 6 and 11, not sure if that part is right...because then I started questioning his age too. There is a part where they switch from Cassie to Casey for the female lead, and while it makes sense a bit later on, it seemed like all of a sudden her name changed with no explanation. Now I might have missed it, but it seemed weird to me.

Overall I enjoyed the book and will have to check out the first one and the next one which we got a sneak peek at the end of the book.

What a unique and fun new world Deborah Ann Davis has created.
Her characters are vivacious and her imagination definitely flows off the pages and into the readers mind.

The thing I was most happy with this time was the fact that the story seemed to really flow smoothly. When you are bouncing around it can get a little convoluted and Deborah Ann Davis really had a grasp on the story and didn't let that happen.

Great characters and humor along with mystery and intrigue really make for a wonderfully written and fun to read novel!

Second in the Love of Fairs series, this book even surpasses the very good Fairly Certain which began the series.

Here the prologue introduces readers to eleven-year-old William in 1938 at a carnival.

“The lure of the unfamiliar drew the young trespasser deeper into the commotion. Abandoning the concealment of the tent, William crept deeper into the magnificent foreign world.”

Chapter one brings readers to 1998 to Lenny’s Livery to meet 21-year-old Jacob Kent, a driver, as well as an older William, looking to book a limousine and driver for a trip to Massachusetts.

This simple encounter sets Jacob and William on a course that will intertwine their divergent lives unpredictably. As to be expected, various fairs are the backdrop to a compelling and mystifying journey for the two of them.

The writing is superb, the plot intricate and compelling, and the characterizations throughout this fast moving story will pull at readers’ hearts.

Jacob had the woman that he was going to spend the rest of his life with all picked out. All he had to do was find her again and tell her that she was his. This turns out be easier said than done. Cassie had caught the interest of a quite kind of guy. She knew that it was a complication that she and her family did not need.

I love the siblings (Cassie, Robin, and Sam), William and his household staff, and of course Jacob (Jake). It was fun watching some of the antics that were gotten in to around the house/property and on outings.

The history and timeline made for a great way to keep up with the kissing booth over the years and the connections to the fairs. There was so much sweetness, laughs, fun, excitement to go around.

This was a clean romance that had hints of suspense and mystery. You will be motivated to read further to see how Jacob get the girl, how he keeps her safe, will he get the family he has dreamed of, will there be a happy-ever-after for him. I found the plot wonder, the characters beautiful and easy to connect with, and the writing to be flowing. There was a wonderful imagination set behind the words on the pages.

I have not previously read any books by Deborah Ann Davis, so I'll be honest I was a bit skeptical about this one. The blurb that I read on it perked my interest but I wasn't sure it would be a home run. However - I was quickly proven wrong. I did not read her debut novel, Fairly Certain, but I want to now. The prologue & beginning chapters introduce us to the magic & legend that surrounds the Kissing Booth and from then on we were hooked to see how it would affect the main characters. This was an enjoyable read, and it was such a fun journey to watch how the characters lives are affected and intertwined throughout the story.

This book is written in third person and it showcases all sides of the story line so that the reader can better relate to the characters. There were a few times that the characters frustrated the mess out of me – if they had just simply discussed a few personal things. But I guess that is what helps lend a realistic feel to the story? The author manages to keep the reader guessing as to what the outcome of the story will be; only letting out enough clues for us to think we figured out the ending. There was sad times, suspenseful moments and sweet love connections that all came together to make this well rounded book worthy of 4 stars from us!

One thing that really stuck out for me with this novel and the series as a whole is the talent that Deborah Ann Davis has with description. There really is something powerful about an author being able to use words to transport a reader into their world. Deborah Ann Davis definitely succeeds here.

The one other thing that the author nails is the pacing of the plot. This is for both novels as individuals. I think everything just felt like it unfolded effortlessly.

The characters are very intriguing and will draw in the reader. I really enjoyed this continuation of the series.

This is an Author who knocked my socks off! When reading a new author for the first time I am always skeptical, but Deborah Ann Davis has really managed to meld my favorite aspects of a book. I highly recommend this one to any Young Adult junkies like me!

It is a Young Adult Novel and at times it felt like a younger YA novel if that makes sense as far as the characters were concerned. However the themes of this book are quite advanced and unique for this genre.

I think that overall this is a very interesting concept and the execution of both the plot and the compelling characters were very well done.

This is the second book in the Love of Fairs Series. This was such a fun and cool read! It was magical and takes the reader back int time; back to 1938. Jacob, who didn't have a typical upbringing because he grew up in the foster care system, has made something for himself. He is living a happy life. Then there is Casey who is in the witness protection program along with her family. Both will grab you by the heart and hang onto it until the very end. I was fortunate enough to be able to read both book one and two, but you can read either and not get lost or confused, but I do recommend reading both because they are great. Both characters are written so well with their backstories and how they are handling it that you as the reader will be cheering them on from the first page until you close the book. The author did such a great job taking two completely different personalities with two very different stories and finding a way to intertwine their stories in this book.

Believable and Relatable characters really help to captivate the reader and get them invested in the happenings of this story.
I loved Jacob from the very start of this book and was excited to get to follow his journey.
The novel really escalates from from beginning to end.
The relationship between Jacob and Casey was really intimate and sweet. I enjoyed feeling like I was watching it grow personally.
A great Young Adult Romantic Suspense Novel!

This really is an unusual love story, and on the whole, I liked it.

But.

It was an incredibly frustrating read at times. As the reader, I could see where everything was leading, and the resulting confusion and inability of the characters to simply talk to each other and resolve the issues made me want to bang everyone's heads together. Hard. Some people will enjoy this approach. I'm not one of them.

That said, the characters and relationships which the author developed throughout the book were given a light touch, and the growth that we see felt more organic as a result.

My other issue is that, given the build up, the final resolution was perhaps a little rushed. However, overall, this wasn't a bad book.

A good read! It's still spring type weather for us and to be able to sit by a nice little fire at night reading is one of the most relaxing things to do. And to read this book during that time was nice. This is the 2nd in the series and I haven't read book 1 yet.. With saying that I can say that this book is really good! Two worlds colliding into one.... Only will leave you wandering. This is a book that I can honestly say I can recommend.

Deborah Ann Davis' "Fairly Safe" is the second tale in the Love of Fairs series, but you can read it as a standalone. I loved the idea behind the story. The Kissing Booth could easily have been like a light-hearted X-Files episode. Just a great little story. Sweet love at its best! Loved how the story connected and reconnected over the years.

You will definitely want to have plenty of allotted reading time before starting this one. It was hard to put down. I was so engrossed in the story that I put off many of my important things to do. Deborah Ann Davis does a great job of creating a YA Romantic Suspense that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

I was anticipating each thing, yet surprised the whole way through. And then its not just a Thriller, but there is a Romantic element which helps lighten the mood. I think the Romance was believable and unfolded smoothly which is always important. I don't like when Romances seem forced, this one seemed natural. Great not only Romantic Thriller but Thriller in general.
