On August 14, 1974, the Tornado, a combat aircraft jointly developed and built by Germany, Great Britain and Italy, takes off from Manching airfield, Germany.
At this time, nobody expected that the Tornado - 21 years later – would be flown by German crews as the first combat aircraft of the Bundeswehr after World War II over the Balkans.
The development of this jet aircraft equipped with swept wing technology and integrated thrust reverse system, unique for a European combat jet, proved to be visionary.
Lieutenenat General Walter Jertz book traces the history of this successful combat aircraft extensively and in detail.
Excellent images and for the first time released documents make this book an extremely interesting reading about a pioneering project of European aircraft development in post-war history.
The book starts with a foreword by Air Vice Marshal Sandy Hunter CBE AFC DL RAF (Retd).
