In spite of a bitter estrangement, Abby battles the bitterness of the Alaskan winter, and memories of a romance gone badly, to rescue her sister.
*** It’s nice to find an author who writes a solid action thriller in which both the protagonists and villains are strong, smart, yet realistic women. At the same time, they are not over-the-top, anti-men either. Elements of the plot were a bit over the top. The romance was somewhat unnecessary and, at times, annoying. Carver is no Stabenow but I definitely found myself quickly turning the pages through this non-stop read.

The plot smoothly moved along without any sidetracking or meandering oddities. The main character gave me a sort of calm serene feeling overall. Most of the characters were believable and likable, the Alaskans full of rural country charm. The relationship between the sisters was rewarding. There was some exciting and tense action towards the end. I couldn't empathize with the romantic situation. Some of the American characters used British words in a way that seemed out of place. The description, "Her skin tightened", is used frequently. Despite these things I thought it was an enjoyable read and I found it difficult to suspend reading it at any time.

Abby Mcall, an architect living in England, receives the news that her sister, Lisa Mcall has mysteriously disappeared in the cold, snow covered and dangerous Alaska. Abby goes to Alaska to help find her sister, and finds there's a lot of trouble for her and her sister in store.
This book has been very well written. The twists in the tale put me on edge, so much that I could not put the book down. All the characters are well-developed, and I found the leading characters extremely enjoyable. It is very unpredictable, in contrast to many novels of these days. All my years on this earth could not have me guessing the climax.
All over, totally deserving of the 4 stars.

Two estranged sisters, one very world-capable, the other a bit bookish. Who is chasing the first one, and can the second find her and rescue her? Who is friend and who is foe? Well of course the knights in shining armour aren't always the ones who first appear so!

Not a bad detective-style novel, definitely an enjoyable holiday read.
