I'll be brief. This book is not good. Not good at all. The blurb is intriguing, but the story itself is so dumb it's hard to even wrap your head around it.
Both leads are incredibly childish and make unbelievably stupid decisions. They go from deciding one thing to deciding another in a page. But not talking themselves around, just ... almost like the author lost her train of thought and went off in a totally different direction.
A total waste of my time. Pages and pages of nonsense. And it's not because this book is an offshoot and I didn't read the first series. Lordy, if I had even read one of this author's earlier works, I'm pretty sure I'd never have picked this one up no matter how cheap it was. The back stories are laid out well enough. I wasn't asking any questions, it's all pretty clear. It's just bad. Very poorly written and contrived.

REDEEMED!
I was on the verge of making this my last read by this author since the last few in the Grant Clan series were so dissappointing. I am so glad this one turned out better.
This is the first of what appears to be a branch off of the Clan Grant Series. Although it can probably be a stand alone, I think it's more fulfilling if you have read the Grant Series first.
This was written a bit differently with the H & h having already established their love for each other. I do miss the courting and wooing, the build up to the romance, but even so, I think she did a good job of showing the love between Loki and Arabella without it. I also like that she finally chose to not make the hero a childish manwhore braggart. He was not a virgin, but his past escapades weren't flaunted around. This made him a much more likable hero IMHO.
There is still some work needed in the logic of some of the plot and character actions (mostly the antagonists). They are a little rough around the edges. I like that the author has minimized the roles of the previously annoying clan children.
I still want more of the Scottish words she use to use in her earlier works.. the doona's willna's, etc... but it works ok for me as is.
A few more love scenes would be nice as well--Hint hint
With this, I most likely will continue with the next in the series.

Immature hero! (audible review)
Okay, I was so glad when this book ended. The hero Loki was way too immature and annoying. The heroine had a couple of TSTL (to stupid to like) moments.
The story line and plot were just okay. Nothing great. I like my hero's strong and confident. This hero was not.
This was a struggle to get through. Sigh....
As for the narration. Not that great. He made the hero even sound immature. But I guess you could call that good since the character himself was.
Glad this was a free book on amazon and 1.99 for the audible.

I REALLY enjoyed listening to this book. Loki was a favorite of mine on previous books (except when he says "Missy Angel" lol). Bella was AMAZING, so very likable and strong. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this book and the ending scene with Torrian has me like WTH is going on. It was also really nice to catch up with most of the clans. Besides Logan and Gwn's story, this one of probably my favorite from this author. I recommend this one but I also recommend you read her Clan Grant series first.

I don’t usually like books where the couple starts off in love but this one worked for me! It might have been because I already love Loki from the previous series and my heart was super invested in his story.

So I find the Grants addictive. If I didn't I doubt I would have returned to this world after the way the Clan Grant series ended, but there is something appealing about these characters she's created...anyway....
Loki is of course a favorite. He's always been the plucky little kid that was sneaky but helpful in every book he's been in. Unfortunately clever little Loki grew up to be a bit of an insecure push over/dumb-dumb.
So he's in love with Arabella, who brings NOTHING to the table by the way, but her dad doesn't approve because he's "not a real Grant". Um ok, that used to be a thing, except that her family seems poor and her dad practically spits in the face of the laird of the clan, his wife, his brother and his nephew and passes up a chance for his daughter to go live a better life with the most powerful family in the area. He also wants to keep her close by so he doesn't miss her, but he marries his other daughter off the someone who lives far away who isn't a Grant so.....what's the reasoning here?
On a side note, their romance starts differently in that Loki and Bella know each other already when the story starts, so you miss them falling in love with each other, but since Montclair usually does a love at first sight thing, I thought this actually made more sense because they've known each other for years by the time the story starts.
So off Loki goes in a time before DNA testing to find his long-lost father to prove to Arabella's dad he's good enough.
I will say this. The big fight scene at the end was better than usual. Usually this author just speeds through like there isn't supposed to be any suspense, but this one was ok.
The sex scenes were ok. At least they were a bit different from her other books. I've said it once, but it's still true, most the time it's as if all her male leads share notes on what to do in bed....almost as if someone were copying and pasting ....
To sum up; bit of a disappointing kick off the the next generation of Grants, but if you generally like her book, you'll probably like this one.

Loki Grant is the adopted son of the laird's brother. He loves Arabella, but her father will not approve of their union because Loki is not a true Grant. Loki's uncle could sanction the match without Arabella's father's approval, but Loki doesn't want his love's father to be forced to accept him. He wants to earn the man's respect. He tries to find his birth parents, hoping he is of noble birth. Like another character in this series, he considers pursuing a career as a spy for the king.
So many other things happened, but the important thing is the main characters got their HEA.

I don't know how many times I wanted to stop reading this train wreck of a novel. I kept going because I have some stupid determination to finish every book I read this year. If I had a physical copy instead of listening to the audio (which was another disaster) I would have thrown it at the wall multiple times.
1) The only thing in this book set in the 1280s are the names, well the name of the king at least. Everything else is very Victorian, from the clans, to the clothes, to the "technology", to the prude behaviors and attitudes.
2) I could have overlooked the many anachronisms if the story was at least good. But it was dreadful. The characters were all one note. I didn't like any of them, at all. Seriously, most of them were stupid. The heroine - why would you do that?! The hero - why are you so insecure?! The heroine's father - the hero's name is Loki Grant, end of story. He is a Grant, no one gives two farthings about "blood." He's apparently worthy enough for everyone but the lowly villager, who does what exactly? Who is he? Why does anyone care?! Get him off Grant land. The hero's father - Seriously? How stupid is that plan? And that one also. *facepalm* He just needed a white cat to sit on his lap so he could steeple his fingers and laugh maniacally.
3) The word "sire." Could it have been use any more often?
4) The narrator wasn't horrible but I think he must have been holding himself back from laughing at certain points because this book was so bad. It was difficult to listen to.
5) At one point I started reading passages to my SO and he would make up what he thought was a stupid next line and more often than not he was right. Just awful writing. The one positive I received was all the laughter we had reading the passages to each other and discussing how bad it was.
6) Once the book was over, it kept going! For another hour... and more anachronisms and more secrets revealed which I didn't care about and more horrible character decisions. And why?

Loki Grant a very young street urchin abandon by his real parents and left to live in a crate outside a Inn in Ayrs. Loki has been adopted by Brodie and his wife Celestina Grant. Brodie is the brother to the Powerful Laird of Clan Grant. Loki never feels excepted by some of the other lads and lassie of Clan Grant even though his family readily excepts him and treats him love and kindness. One young girl Arabella who live in the Keep kisses him and promises to love him always. As the grow old enough to marry Arabella father will not except him. He doesn't believe that Loki is truly a Grant because he was adopted. Loki feels the only way for Arabella's father to except him is to find out who is natural born parents are. He hopes he is of royal blood or that he can do more exception deeds to garner Arabella fathers acceptance. Loki is a legend in his own time. He finds the man who is posing as his father but soon finds out this man is an evil, conniving villain. Who Plagues and terrorizes Loki and Arabella off and on through out the story.
The love between Loki and Arabella seems real enough. But the storyline seems rushed. The characters are not developed. The plot is over used and done much better by other authors.The author relies on the reader having read the other books in Clan Grant, but suppose they didn't? There is not much to anchor the story. But I do love a HEA and Loki does find happiness with Arabella and he does find his real father who is quite a surprise. Overall Loki was a pleasant light hearted story.

I thought this story most endearing. Sad to say the sad situation that separated people by class and parentage still exist today.
I enjoyed the way this author built her story with love and understanding by family ties and loyalty of friends.
When I read reviews of a negative nature by people that read no more the a few pages of a book I am appalled by such negative judgement. They are not readers.
I would definitely continue reading this Author I think she did a great job.

Look (The Highland Clan Book 1)
This is the latest book I've read from Keira Montclair. In the past month I've read the entire Grant Clan series, and have just now started on this series. All of her books are hard to put down once you start reading. The characters she writes about come to life and the connectedness of stories is great because you really come to know each one so well, and see how their lives unfold. Keira, is a very talented story teller and I highly recommend reading any of her books.

20 pages in and I was already tired of hearing how Loki was adopted by the Grant clan at age 6 while he was living in a box on the streets and he didn’t know who his real sire was and he couldnt marry some lass who kissed him at 12 and he knew he would always love because he didn’t know who his real dad was....See? Annoying! And it was repeated multiple time in the first 20 pages. Not good writing. Mention and then move on. The reader can keep up.

I love tales of the Scottish Highlanders in the 1200s. It was such an interesting time in history and their battles with invaders and unjust kings became legendary. Loki Grant truly is a rags-to-riches tale with warm characters and fast-paced action. Author Keira Montclair did more than perk my interest in her series. She turned me into a fan. The loving and powerful Grant clan is one I want to get to know better. I’m going to read more of her work. You should too.

Loki is the first book in the The Highland Clan series by Keria Montclair, however it is related to previous books and series by the author. Readers that have read the authors other books will already have some character knowledge for our hero, but newcomers will be able to fully enjoy this series opener, but just might want to go back and read the other books out of curiosity if they love the style and characters- so fair warning there.

Loki is a book with some tremendous highs, and some annoying lows. I loved Loki's character (for the most part). He is very clever and resourceful. He cares deeply about his adopted family and will do anything to protect others. However, because of his background and the way some clan members look down on him because of it he has no faith or trust in himself- or his worth. This is well handled, and well written as part of the story. However, I was more than a little annoyed at his belief that because he had trouble putting emotion into words that he did not have them, even after he dwells on how much love he has for people for a good chunk of time. Similarly, I loved how Arabella knew her own mind, was smart and a hard worker, but still let her family treat her like a servant. He father is the biggest issue as far as I am concerned, because if it were not for him none of the more dangerous moments would have taken place. She could talk to the laird and warriors, and was willing to risk her life on several occasions, but could not stand up to her sister or father? That really bothered me. So, lets move on.
I thought there was plenty of action, and that the admitted love between out couple made the crises that kept them apart more poignant. Loki's journey to find his family had its good moments, and triggered the majority of the most dangerous and painful moments of the book. However, io loved how he was always looking out for others, in particular a boy that reminded him of himself as a child. All of his thoughts and actions showed him to be so much better than he gave himself credit for, though I was so glad that the important people around him could see it to.
Loki is a romance with complex characters, adventure, danger, and suspense. Readers that already love the author will be reading without any urging, and will be glad for the read. Those that are easily frustrated by the character issues I mentioned above will likely still enjoy the read, but will be as annoyed as I at those bits of the story.

This is a good Highlander romance, and a good start to the Highland Clan series. I've been looking forward to reading about the next generation of Grants and Ramseys. This one gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.
I have liked Loki ever since he was introduced in the Clan Grant series. He was such a cute kid, and so smart! So I was glad his story was the first in this series. I still like him as an adult, but it did bother me that he still didn't believe he deserved to be a Grant. I get that he didn't know who his parents were, but the Grants had fully accepted and loved him for years -- so I didn't buy that he would think he wasn't good enough to be a Grant or marry Arabella.
I liked Arabella OK, but she was just unbelievably stupid. She put herself in a lot of danger several times, just to try doing things that a woman alone would NEVER have been able to pull off (at least not in that patriarchal and violent time period). She also needed to stand up to her father more -- she was an adult, and she shouldn't have let him treat her like a servant.
I was glad that Loki and Arabella found their HEA -- they were good together, and they both needed someone who understood them.
I also liked most of the other characters, especially little Kenzie, who was just adorable. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I still like him as an adult, but it did bother me that he still didn't believe he deserved to be a Grant. I get that he didn't know who his parents were, but the Grants had fully accepted and loved him for years -- so I didn't buy that he would think he wasn't good enough to be a Grant or marry Arabella.
I liked Arabella OK, but she was just unbelievably stupid. She put herself in a lot of danger several times, just to try doing things that a woman alone would NEVER have been able to pull off (at least not in that patriarchal and violent time period). She also needed to stand up to her father more -- she was an adult, and she shouldn't have let him treat her like a servant.
I was glad that Loki and Arabella found their HEA -- they were good together, and they both needed someone who understood them.
I also liked most of the other characters, especially little Kenzie, who was just adorable. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

When the world feels like it is going crazy much of the time, sometimes the most enjoyable thing to do is escape it for a short time. Readers know the magic power of diving into a compelling story and being transported far away from their everyday realities. And there is not much that is more distant that the highlands hundreds of years ago. Highland romances can have an irresistible ability to harken a reader to a time of nature and honor and fierce warriors. A well-written highland romance will always have a treasured place in my heart and on my bookshelf.
In the case of Loki, I was not enthralled, but I was entertained. What was most frustrating to me, though, was not finding out until the very end of the book that this is the first in a series that comes AFTER a preceding series. There were so many references in "Loki" that had no context for me at all because I have not read the previous series. Many of the main characters have already had their stories told and are established in this world, but I didn't know them. That led to an atmosphere in my reading of assumed familiarity that I just did not feel. Many times, that took me out of the story.
For the story itself, I wish there had been more depth and detail. One of the things I look for in a story is a very clear sense of rising and falling toward and away from climactic moments. A passage about heart-stopping fear should not have the same tonal quality as a passage describing what the clan keep looks like. There needs to be tonal change. I look forward to those times where I find myself reading as fast as I can to find out what happens. I did not find any tonal changes in "Loki," which was a great disappointment.
The characters are good, and the story is interesting. I especially love the little boy who helps Loki and Arabella several times. I was very pleased with the development of his character throughout the story.
Overall, this is an enjoyable read. I would certainly be interested in revisiting this book, but only after reading the initial series first. I wonder how much more I would have enjoyed "Loki" if I had read the books in order!

El clan de las highlands comienza con la historia de Loki que es un niño que vive en las calles de Ayr, al qe conocemos en Los Grant por salvar a Celestina y ayudar a Brodie Grant. Ellos lo adoptan y se convierte en un Grant.
El esta enamorado de Arabella Lewis y ella de el, pero el padre de Arabella no lo quiere por que no tiene sangre de los Grant. Loki quiere buscar a sus padres para que el de Bella lo acepte como yerno.
Nos encontramos con una familia unida (los Grant) y otras familia que por lazos de sangre los apoyan (Cameron, Rambey…)
Loki no cree merecer pertenecer a los Grant y tampoco merecer casarse con Bella. Cuando va a Ayr conoce a Kenzie que es un niño que vive donde vivía el y tiene admiración por Loki sin que sepa quien es.
Le tenia muchas ganas a este libro, y que Loki me pareció un niño muy pizpireta, despierta, espabilado y sagaz. Me ha encantado este libro y me lo he leído en un solo día. Ahora voy a por Torria por que he tenido una sensación desde que leí a Loki y justo al final mis sospechas se han aclarado, por lo que voy a ver si en la historia de Torrian me termina de dar la razón.

Terribly juvenile writing; I gave it my best try and only made it through the first 50% and just had to set it down. The main protagonist, Loki, is a brooding child who whines too much about his parentage (I get it, you were an orphan, we all get it the first time -- do not remind us twenty times). Bella is bleh and has a lot of "dumb girl" moments.
I'm not convinced they're romantically connected. They share one kiss as pre teens and I guess that means "forever" in this novel. But do they have any love for one another.... Not sure.
In terms of bad writing, wait till the first sex scene. Juvenile descriptors like "bum" and "private place" are found throughout. Not a sexy read at all when you're tripping over those words. Also.... The accents come and go--the language throughout is not convincing.
Just could not make it through.

I have issues with the angst that Loki has been lugging on his shoulder ever since the Grants found and adopted him. I get that he has to find out about his true parentage (almost every adopted child have that in common) but to feel unworthy, inadequate and insecure, despite his advantages, is just too much to process. Too defeatist, for me. Instead of celebrating his Gifts, he turns into a Mouse? Not a very good character arc. The characters are too incredible to be relatable and real. I am just glad I reached the end of this book. I do not think I am ever going to read any work from this author anymore.

The book was repetitive, and I lost interest pretty fast. I hated that the main character kept doubting how much his adopted family loved him. I also hated how after so many years of being with this new family, he questioned whether he would be kicked out of the family and clan.
As I hated that after he married the main character, they had to live apart and hide that they were married.
I also felt that there was nothing interesting about Loki. I think even his wife described him as a brute. He honestly did not seem like the smartest tool on the shed. Don’t care to continue reading this series.

I leave this review after listening to the audio rendition of this book.
The story is encompassing Loki, his search for his natural parents and the problems that springs from this search.
It is a very thorough disclosure of the various situations, leaving no small detail out. The reader/listerner leaves on the completion of the tale only with one unfinished item, which I believe will be answered in the next episodes in the series.
The narrator did a commendable job, adding an extra edge to an already exemplary piece of literature.
The story is encompassing Loki, his search for his natural parents and the problems that springs from this search.

This was almost 5 stars for me. Great writing and an amazing story. Reading Loki’s story from the very beginning in the Clan Grant series and seeing how he turned out was great. I’m glad he was able to get to know some of his family and work through some insecurities. Bella, I liked her, but she had a few annoying moments, though she always redeemed herself in my opinion. I definitely think this story was better having read the other series first because you have much more background on the character.

I have missed these highland Scots!!!!
I have ready every book of the Grant Clan and Ramsey clan books by Keira Montclair. I haven't read one of her books in a while but this book had me addicted quite like the very first one I eve read by her, about Alex and Maddie. That was and continues to be a favorite of mine. This one reminded me how much I would've loved to live in those days.

I am sure this book picks up but after 16% of how grateful Loki was to be found by the Grants and rescued from a crate behind a tavern time and time again and how he would win his Arabella's fathers respect over and over again sorry fed up 30 pages of boring repetitiveness I am sure he finds his origins and wins his lady love but soo can't be bothered with the time it would take to find out and I'd give odds the above is mentioned more than once more in the book

Good story
This was a good story, if a bit hard to get into in the beginning. There are a lot of spelling & punctuation errors, which detract from reading enjoyment for me. I thought there was a good premise for a story but the writing was confusing in places. This is one of my favorite genres for reading and I guess I expected more from the book that it presented. But...It was a decent read.

Loki (The Highland Clan, #1) by Keira Montclair I enjoyed this book which is Loki and Arabella's (Bella) story... Loki adopted by Brodie and Cekestina and Clan Grant.. Bella the love of his life ..but her father objects... he doesn't feel worthy ...I enjoyed all they go through to be together and get to their HEA... and then there is Kenzie...
