Short but quite a comprehensive look at the Gestapo as well as other sections of the Nazi state apparatus, covers the main perpetrators as well as a history of atrocities and the resistence to them. Not easy reading but if you are looking to start studying this period or get a better understanding of what happened during this time it gives you easy access while not overwhelming you with academic details.

If you have any interest in WWII history this book is a must read. We know the general idea of what the Gestapo was but until you head this book you have no idea who they really were and what they were capable of doing. The horrors that were committed by the Gestapo is brought to life in this book.

This book exposes the creation, organization, administration and operation of the Gestapo and its spreading on the Germany invaded countries during the Second World War, until its dissolution when the war came to an end. It also shows the sequential development of the Holocaust, from its roots, when not even that War had been foreshadowed.
The holocaust was the development done by the Hitler government of a series of well synchronized and increasingly perfectioning procedures to kill human beings that took place in European countries occupied by Nazism.
Although the format of this book is not typographically divided, it can be considered as composed of two sections: In the first one, the author has made a concise but clear exposition including dates and characters on the organization of the Gestapo. In the second, has gathered short biographies of prominent Nazis responsible for the organization and functioning of the Gestapo and of outstanding heroes pertaining to the different Resistance Groups organized in the countries invaded by Germany; resulting in a very informative text and complete reference source on this subject.

I found this book to be incredibly engaging, with a clear focus in mind that is shown by the subsections within the chapters that allows one to leave the book with more knowledge about the horrors of the Nazi police.
Lucas does not assume much previous knowledge, and he manages to depict the war in its entirety through brief mentions that occur in between the information regarding the Gestapo. I was completely engrossed in this, and I really enjoyed how I was able to really focus on a specific aspect of a war that is often so generally painted in history classes.
I would highly recommend this book, not only to history enthusiasts, although they will surely enjoy it, but to just the casual reader. This book, especially the last two pages, makes a point of emphasizing how we should never forget the lengths to which human cruelty can extend, and how we must safeguard against these things, never allowing them to reach the scale they once did.

Incredibly informative and well researched. Saul put this together in such a way that it was a fast paced and easy read yet incredibly detailed. From the beginning and creation of Gestapo to the end of the war and the "every man for themselves" situation. Not once are the actions of the Gestapo glorified but what is are the stories of those that were killed. The resistance heroes and those that tried to stand against them. I am so glad both stories were included simultaneously. Having always been drawn to WWII books I will say even I learned a bit from this one. Worth the small price for an easy yet educational book.

I enjoyed this book, even with the horrific subject. It was easy to read, and it provided some details about the era that I had not heard before. I am familiar with the Nazis and World War II, and many of the books I read are much more scholarly, but this book is a great beginning for setting the scene and introducing the players. I thought the continuity of the book was a bit strange, but overall it seemed to work.

Nice brief summary of the Gestapo

Overall, worth your while to read. I’m somewhat of a student of World War II. I was able to learn a few things from this book. The editing of the text leaves a bit to be desired that can be easily overlooked. If the price is right, buy it and read it.

Interesting and informative

I found this book informative and interesting, without being bogged down by numbers, percentages, and other statistical hyperbole. I learned without being bored. I would recommend this book to all who seek some understanding of the scope of this organization. It's roots were questionable enough, and then it metastasized.

This is a fairly short book so the level of detail isn't great. It covers a basic history of the gestapo by discussing the key figures and using key events as examples of their tactics. It's a good book to get your feet wet before diving in. For the $0.99 I got it for on amazon it was worth the read.

This book provides a quick read on the timeline of events surrounding the Gestapo and SS. It's a good fit for someone who is looking for some understanding of how such atrocities could have happened yet does not want to delve too deep. History buffs will find it lacking ...

This book was honestly hard to read sometimes. I found myself having emotional swings from heartbreak to rage. How anyone could do the things the Gestapo did to another human being is beyond comprehension. However, I believe it’s important to learn from history, to know what truly happened.
