Playing center field for the New York Kings, Jake Woodbury has one of the most prestigious jobs in all of sports. To the world, he's the good-looking, soft-spoken minister's son who's survived celebrity without a hint of scandal. But, inside, he's reeling from a secret that seems destined to haunt him forever. Scarlett Moore is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, famous for singing about her celebrity ex-boyfriends. The CEO of her record label has carefully honed her provocative image since she was fifteen. Sex sells, and Scarlett's well aware that it takes more than talent to stay on top. One thing is clear: She's the last thing Jake needs. And he's the do-gooder jock she should avoid at all costs. But when the game begins, all bets are off.
Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.
Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.
A tale of second chances at love, tragic loss, trust, forgiveness, self-worth&discovery, and ultimate redemption.
Loved Jake and Scarlett! Squeaky clean "Choir Boy" with a tumultuous past meets Feisty Pop Star Diva fighting to take control of her own life and reclaim her identity.
Oh my goodness!!! :D I jumped for joy when Collette West asked me to beta read for her again, and I was super excited to finally get to read Jake Woodbury's story...and it was even more amazing than I expected!!! Right from the start, I was completely hooked. I have loved all of Collette West's New York Kings books, but this one had my favourite introduction yet! We hadn't met (or even heard of) Scarlett yet, so we had to meet her somehow, and I absolutely loved how it happened!!! The moment where Jake first heard her sing, and where they interacted for the first time were absolutely perfect, and I was desperate for them to meet in person!!!! :D
I've always loved Jake, but when we got to see more of him in Scott's story (Perfect Game) we were routing for him to not get the girl because Carrie was meant for Scott...so I was soooo happy to finally see Jake getting his story told, and have him meet the girl of his dreams. :D And Scarlett was definitely the girl of Jake's dreams!
On the surface, they didn't really match. She's a famous singer with a reputation for being a heartbreaker who has risen to fame singing the tales of her exes and breakups in her songs, while Jake is known for his beliefs, and for being an all-around guy. On paper, he's a bit boring, and she's pretty superficial, but we know better. Jake and Scarlett were PERFECT for each other!! I loved seeing them get to know one another, and the passion between them was off the charts!
While Jake and Scarlett were definitely on fire romance-wise, I loved that they had a deeper connection than that. Their chemistry was instantaneous, but I loved that it was music that really drove them together. I always loved how musical Jake was, and it was perfect that he met someone who inspired him musically, and I really loved that they both inspired each other to write music! :D
Overall, I absolutely loved Game Winner! And I can't wait to see the final book because knowing Collette, she'll make it even better!! :D
I received an ARC of this book from IndieSage PR in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.
Unfortunately, I haven't read the entire series. However, the ones that I've read were all amazing books that I truly loved. Before my first book from this series, I haven't heard of Collette West before. I am really glad I took a chance and read the first New York Kings I ever read. Because of that book, I met another author I'd willingly watch out for and another series that I keep looking forward to.
This book is now Jake's story. We've met him in previous books, and we all know his character. The heroine, Scarlett, we haven't met her before. However, both main characters were just perfect for each other. At first, I couldn't really quite picture Jake having his own book or that I would even be interested in it. I was wrong. Ms. West always knows what to do with her kings because she made me a fan of Jake, the otherwise boring-sounding player that I wasn't that intrigued with.
I don't know if she will write more books for this series in the future, but I hope she does. If not, I will still be following her and watching out for more books from her.
This is my favorite by far of all the books in this series. I was so glad Jake was finally getting a book and hopefully the girl. He deserved a girl. After all the disappointments in the past this sweet adorable guy who is genuinely a good kind man deserved it. Although if you ask Jake he is none of this. He does what his heart tells him is right but deep inside he feels he is worthless. That he is a disappointment and fears being rejected again. Rejected from the girl and his family.
Scarlett fears not being successful and love. She doesn’t think that love is in her world. Her parents never were there for her so the spotlight is all she had. She is underneath the glitz and glamour of what she was sculpted into a good person. She wants to be more than what her image was molded to be. She wants to sing songs that mean something and become a better person. She doesn’t want to be the partying maneater. She has had some seriously bad stuff happen for her to get where she is and she wants to change that but is afraid. Afraid of losing her safety net of the limelight that makes her feel someone is there. Jake though makes her stronger and want to change. He gives her the courage to become more that a popstar but who she is meant to be.
These two have some serious chemistry. Chemistry that sizzles and sparks up the pages. You can see how these two react to each other and feel from the emotions and actions how they affect each other. She makes Jake feel he is not worthless like he can become better. He makes her want to be different. To stand up to those who are keeping her down. They help each other heal by not judging each other and caring genuinely caring for each other. they both have secrets but want to overcome them to be with the other.
This is a wonderful romance. We see two people with ghosts in the past haunting them but with the help of the other they are able to free themselves of them and love each other. Scarlett though almost loses Jake because of her desire to have the spotlight. She almost makes a decision that could destroy him and lose him forever. She doesn’t realize Jake is there to encourage her and support her. To do what is needed so she can soar in her career. They are each other’s support system and rock. They are each others confidantes and best friend. They are each others key to their hearts.
this is a wonderfully written story about getting over your fears. About standing up for yourself and others. About becoming who you are meant to be and forgiving yourself. A beautiful story about finding love a love that changes you and helps you heal. The characters draw you in and make you fall in love with them especially sweet Jake. You see growth and also releasing of guilt. A perfect combination of romance, finding strength and confronting fears and the past and finding a way to forgive.
When I saw that Jake Woodbury was the next King to get a book, I was very much intrigued. He seems so different from his teammates in his personality, belief, and reaction to what happens on and off the field. I was excited to learn more about who he is and what makes him tick. This book took some pretty interesting turns that I did not anticipate and it made for an enjoyable story. Jake is a man of mystery and we finally get some answers in Game Winner, all the while watching him fall in love with someone he never saw coming.
Jake and Scarlett seem like two people who could not be more opposite in their outlooks on life. Jake is deeply rooted in his faith and Scarlett is making her own way and taking the pop music industry by storm. But there is a connection between these two that you cannot deny. Jake is drawn to her voice, something that unleashes a raw need and desire to connect. From the moment on, they have a rollercoaster full of highs and extreme lows, attempting to see if that momentary connection is something that could be so much more. I appreciated how West addressed Jake’s religious beliefs. It is always a sensitive subject to address but I feel like she did a good job of showing his internal battles and addressing his heart on the situations he faced. He is not perfect by any means. He has good days and bad days. He struggles just like everyone else. His faith does not make him better than anyone else, he just understands more of himself as a result. I loved getting to see what makes him tick and see the other side, the side he hides from the world. It makes him a fabulous character that is relatable and genuine. Scarlett is the opposite of him in so many ways but she longs for a connection and finds it in Jake. In theory, these two will never work. We watch them fall hard and try to muddle through everything that hits them in life. There is lust, love, and heartache. There are surprises and consequences. Somehow these two work but only time will tell if they make it in the end or not.
Game Winner shows a different side of a NY King. We see a clash of celebrities and it enhances this story. It is a love story with a twist, one that will make you wonder what the best would be in the end. There is angst, drama, and passion. There is no halfway in this story and as the reader you are hoping for a full and satisfying HEA. West addresses some interesting themes in this book and gives the reader a story that they were not expecting. I am excited for people to read this book and to see what comes next in the series. I am hoping for more from one specific theme (Roberta…) and cannot wait to see what Collette West has up her sleeve.
**This book was sent to me in exchange for my honest review**
I was introduced to Collette West though Twitter, and I've only read two of her books (this one being the second), but I can say that I am already a huge fan. I find myself looking forward to her books and I am going to go back and read all of the books in this series but for now, just know that I am a lover of Collette West's books.
With that being said, I had a great time with this book! While I didn't love this book as much as INSIDE GAME, I still got a lot of the same feels and smiles.
The characters of Scarlett and Jake were really well developed characters. I liked what they represented, especially Jake. He's not your typical Type A, macho athlete. And I found that to be so refreshing. I took to his character that most. Scarlet, though quite predicable, was a nice character to watch unfold as well. She was a very indepedent, though vulnerable woman. On paper, they both worked really well.
I will be honest, I loved these two better separately than together. Their together story didn't gel for me as quickly as I feel it should have. I didn't believe it. Especially with how it originated. And I think that's what kept me from being immersed into the romance so quickly. But as I continued with the story, I started to loosen up and enjoy them together. But it just took a while.
The storyline? Pretty good! I loved Scarlett's storyline a lot more than Jake's. I wanted more and more from Scarlett, especially once things got down and dirty when getting more into the music industry and the underhandedness of it. Her situation was really intriguing. Jake's storyline, though he's a very interesting character, was a bit bland for me. I couldn't understanf for the life of me why he acted the way that he did throughout certain parts of the story, but I went with it. And I was rewarded greatly in the end.
Overall, this book, though not my favorite, was a fun one. I will continue to support Collette and her work because she can weave together a good story. I got my feels with this book and in my opinion, that's the most important.
4.5 star review of Game Winner (New York Kings #6) by Collette West
This is the story of Jake Woodbury, who plays centre field for the New York Kings and Scarlett Moore, one of the biggest popstars in the world. He’s always had a clean image whilst Scarlett is known for singing songs about her ex boyfriends, being sexy and provocative; an image which has been pushed by her record label. Jake is an all-around good guy who has been hurt in the past by Roberta, a character I was not overly fond of. Scarlett is a woman who has a colourful past, but I really liked Jake and Scarlett together. They were two halves to the whole.
As they say opposites do attract and the chemistry between these two was almost instantaneous. From the first moment that Jake heard Scarlett sing the national anthem it was destiny. They connected over their mutual love of music. They both had secrets, but they worked through their pasts and their issues, towards what will be an incredible future.
This book had a variety of roller coaster events that at times had me shaking my head. At times it was a very emotional read and I could feel their pain. It was extremely well written and I also found myself smiling and laughing whilst reading.
This was a new author and series to me. I will certainly be reading further books by Collette West in the not too distant future. Congratulations on a great book.
5 Star Review I was given this book for a honest review This is the first book I have read by Collette West and it won't be my last . I love sports romance stories and this book has got me hooked on baseball . This is book 6 in The New York Kings Series but can be read as a standalone. I will be going back to read the previous books in the series. Jake Woodbury on the face of it seems to have it all, playing center field for the New York Kings, he is good looking and comes from a happy family background but he has a secret that he wants to keep hidden. Scarlet Moore is one of the biggest popstars around and when she sings the National Anthem at one of Jake's games, He is mesmerized, her voice is magical and when their eyes meet the connection is sealed. Jake and Scarlet are a perfect match but they need to get over the past before they can move on with the future . They inspire each other but they also hurt each other. Will they get a HEA ...... This book is a love story with a few problems along the way, I loved how we got a insight into both of these characters pasts and I felt like I knew the other characters even without reading the previous books in the series. If you love sports romances this series is for you Reviewed for MI Bookshelf
Title: Game Winner Author: Collette West Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult, Sports Series or Standalone: Standalone Series (New York Kings #6) Rating: ★★★★ 1/2 Stars (Rounded to 5* for Goodreads and Amazon)
Review
I’m a little late to the party with this author and more to the point, the New York Kings Series as a whole. Taking this book on, I went in blind to the previous books and their resolutions, and new to the authors writing style.
But as it turns out, neither of them presented the slightest problem here. This book stands alone while in the same universe as the others and the writing style was fantastic. It pulled me in off the first page, especially with the details given in terms of the sport featured heavily within the pages (baseball). I found myself enamored by the nods to the sport almost as much as I was to the main characters.
Jake presented the way any great book boyfriend does and the more the story went on, we were privy to even more layers. Things that when I’m being swept away in a story make me connect on more than just a base level. I enjoyed the fact that this guy with a heart of absolute gold wasn’t perfection personified. That he had faults and flaws like the rest of the general population, but that at the end of the day, still held firm in the truly good person he was.
Which brings me to Scarlett. The fire engine redheaded singer that wasn’t at all the way the public and even those closest to her wanted her to be. The woman that was a lot stronger then I went in expecting her to be, but with a vulnerability about her that made some of the choices she makes, things she does understandable to me even if I wouldn’t have done the same things in her position. She wanted more. She wanted to break free from what she’d been made into and be herself. But never more so than when she comes across Jake Woodbury.
The game changer.
Jake and Scarlett really aren’t all that different. They’re both dealing with things that have taken a toll on their lives up until that point and are searching for more. And their journey to happiness, both alone and together was not an easy one. There were forks in the road, real misunderstandings and influences from outside forces that worked against them, keeping them from what they both truly wanted and needed. Which, for this reader worked because a lot of it just made sense.
But there were also the influences working against them that were of their own design. Things and instances that had taken place in the past that affected their ability to move on successfully into the future. We are our own worst enemies after all and that was definitely what was taking place here. But that just invested me more in wanting to see the beauty that they could truly be once they faced that head on. Rid themselves of their own issues and those from the outside and focused on what really mattered.
Them.
Jake and Scarlett are stubborn and passionate, troubled and misunderstood. Enigmatic yet so very simple at the same time. They came across very real to me, both as individuals and in terms of their relationship and well, they just plain worked. Even if at times they did make me want to pull my hair out from their lack of ability to communicate with one another.
The only thing that could have made this book better for me being the ending. As perfect as it was in terms of giving me what I was after practically from the moment she stood and sang the national anthem that first time, I wanted just a bit more than was given. But I’m greedy, what can I say? Lol
If you’re a fan of sports themed romances, the ones that don’t come easy, inherently good guys that have the ability to make you swoon, and/or stories that are filled with just the right amount of romance and steam, I think you’ll enjoy this.
I know I did.
My thanks to the author and all others involved for letting me read this before its official release.
The men of the New York Kings return in this sweet and sexy tale of opposites attracting where stereotypes play a big role in the rocky road to HEA for the Choir Boy of baseball, Jake Woodbury, and pop seductress, Scarlett. It's an unexpected journey forged over their mutual love of music that gets put through the emotional wringer courtesy of melodramatic actions from an unlikable ex and a manipulative manager that is well worth all the tears.
Jake's been in the background throughout the series, the kindhearted and sweet young man unlucky in love. He's seen as pious and is the one you can count on when it comes to charity work. His family is seeped in religion and he's always tried to live his life accordingly. Unfortunately he feels as though he's living a lie as one tragic event has torn his life apart and left him unable to grieve the loss without tarnishing his "perfect" persona. I ached for everything Jake went through and felt as he truly deserved happiness. He desperately wanted to make his family proud and lived the kind of pious life they wanted but the more he failed the darker his emotions became. Meeting Scarlett was like seeing sunshine for him as her voice soothed his battered soul. Though he knew their personalities and lives were different he couldn't ignore the freedom from his darkness she brought him. I enjoyed his crackling connection with her as it teemed with sexual tension but was also fun and flirty. I liked that he was less experienced than her in matters of sex as it gave a fresh spin on the usual romance tropes. Jake was easy to fall for and I admired how hard he tried to live up to other's expectations but ultimately gave his life over to the power of love in a richly satisfying conclusion.
Scarlett's the reigning Princess of Pop, the equivalent of Taylor Swift, for her catchy songs dedicated to her exes. She's tired though of this kind of music, and way of living, and desperate to make something more meaningful. A complicated relationship with her manager leaves her feeling stuck and unsatisfied, desperate to break away. Meeting Jake gives her a chance at freedom, at least for a little while, as their relationship takes center stage over the music. As she gets closer to him their connection releases his past demons and brings forth feelings she never thought she'd experience. When a life-altering event befalls them it shakes their burgeoning romance and leads to frustrating moments of melodrama. For the most part I liked Scarlett as she told it like it was. She was a supportive sounding board to Jake when he needed it most and I enjoyed their scorching relationship that was full of witty and playful banter.
This was a satisfying read with two very likable characters. I enjoyed seeing Jake's teammates, getting caught up on what's happened to them, and their deepening bond after all the fallout from their corrupt General Manager. It has me excited to see the other players we got glimpses of here as each are unique in their personalities. The world of baseball and music was nicely depicted here too, warts and all, and helped immerse readers into the action. My only frustrations with the story revolved around Jake's ex Roberta and her very sour disposition. She was extremely cruel to him, heaping her own pain on him, and I hated every scene she was in. Scarlett's manager was equally awful with his morally questionable relationship with her when she was younger and his ethical threats as her relationship with Jake progresses. He's creepy and his actions felt way over the top. All in all though this was another satisfying installment in a series that continues to entertain with its sexy and sporty Boys of Summer and I look forward to what comes next!
Game Winner is the sixth book in the New York Kings series from Collette West. I have really enjoyed this series and I couldn't wait to get Jake's story! Having seen him in previous books I was so excited to get to know more about him, and it was great to meet Scarlett since she was a new character to the series. If you haven't read any of these books yet, I highly recommend them, especially if you are a sports romance fan! But if you are new to the series, don't worry about jumping in here since each book is an interconnected standalone story.
New York Kings center fielder Jake Woodbury is known for being the good guy of baseball. With a squeaky clean reputation, Jake has managed to avoid scandal of any kind. But Jake also has a secret that few know about that haunts him. Scarlett Moore is Jake's opposite. She is a famous popstar that is known for being provocative and singing about her ex-boyfriends. Scarlett appears to be the last thing Jake needs and Jake appears to be the exact opposite of what Scarlett would go for. But the attraction between them is instant and these two quickly realize that they might have more in common than they first thought.
Jake and Scarlett were some of my absolute favorites from this series, if not my favorites. Each time I think that Collette West can't top herself or the characters, and yet she continues to do so with every book! Jake was so much more than you first see, and I really liked seeing more of him here. The connection he had with Scarlett was surprising and deep, and I couldn't get enough of these two. Scarlett was the exact same in that there was so much more to her that you would think at first. I loved how these two were clearly attracted to each other and the chemistry was instant, yet their connection was so much deeper. They shared a passion for music, and it was so good to see them really explore that together. They were able to connect in a way that they couldn't with others, and the bond that they shared allowed them to deal with their pasts and issues together.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I really can't recommend this series enough. I love these characters and each book is one that I know won't let me down. Collette West writes such interesting and deep characters and each of them are so unique and different. These aren't your typical cookie cutter type of characters, and I like how real and genuine they are. Scarlett and Jake each had things that they were dealing with, and though their issues might not be ones that most people go through, they were easy to relate to and understand. I honestly can't wait for more from Collette West and I am excited to read more from her in the future.
Well, you would think that a book that I connected with on a soul-deep level would be the most easy review I've ever written. But you would be wrong. I have loved every book in this series, so it's no surprise that I loved this one, but Jake and Scarlett's story had me looking inside myself, and that can be scary. I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for Game Winner, so I've had LOTS of time to think about this. And I think I've finally got my feelings in order.
First, I was amazed at just how deeply I connected with Jake. It's not often that I have much in common with a male main character because, well, I'm a girl. But Jake...his dad is a minister, and at the same time Jake is a professional baseball player. At one point he describes himself as feeling like he's living two seperate lives, and that it doesn't feel like they can both be a part of the same one life. And I immediately started crying, because I feel the exact same way about myself. (Not that I'm a professional athlete, but still.) I often feel like the spiritual, Bible studying, church-going part of my life couldn't possibly be part of the same life where I help erotica writers get their books to publication. As some of you may know, I never share things from my blog on my personal Facebook page, even though I could probably expand my blog's readership by leaps and bounds that way...because my family, and members of my church family, are friends with me on Facebook. I still haven't figured out how to balance these things out, but I'll just keep re-reading this book, and try to follow what Jake did.
Second, from the first pages of this book I thought, "There's no way I'm going to be able to connect with Scarlett." She's a pop star who tends to look like sex on a stick, and that is SO not me. But you begin to learn, as you dig deeper into her story, that there's a lot more to Scarlett than what she lets people see on the surface. There was a stretch of the story where I wanted to HATE her, because of the choices she considers making about a few different areas of her life, and she made me so ANGRY. But even then, I began to empathize with her, and she had me bawling like a baby too.
Watching these two fall in love, and learn so many things about themselves and each other in the process was beautiful, if heartbreaking at times. I always want to say that I love each of the stories in this series equally...but I think this one is going to be the paperback that is worn out long before the others.
It's a seriously fantastic read, and I hope that you'll give it a chance.
So what happens when a sporting goliath and music royalty meet… well Game Winner lays it all out for us. Two people who should never connect, to the outside world are the complete antithesis of each other but to each other are connected soul deep. Jake Woodbury plays for the New York Kings and in the scope of things he is a sporting god but he is everything that isn’t expected from one of the team, after all he has had some super examples on how not to behave from the other guys in the team. But this beautifully kind, devilishly handsome preacher’s son, didn’t need much convincing to live a life that is as normal as his career choice would permit. But he hides shame well, a shame that is all in his head and one that he is allowing to cloud his judgement. Because from the minute he hears Scarlett Moore singing the National Anthem his heart was lost, it was just a case of him running to keep up with it. Scarlett is hot property but that is because she is a carefully packaged commodity controlled by a sick and vindictive man at the head of her record label, those ties are something that she is desperate to break from but to date she is struggling to made headway. Albums are expected and records need to be made, tours need to be undertaken, having a life…heck she has no time for that! But what will happen when the one woman that is he shouldn’t want, is the only woman he can think of? Their connection is instant and it is mutual despite the fact that neither of them can understand why but they have outside forces that they have to consider, Scarlett more so than Jake but I liked the fact that they understood those pressures, it made the fact that they were so involved so quickly acceptable. I didn’t like the doubt that they tortured themselves with, the way Jake found it hard to let go of the guilt surrounding the conclusion of his previous relationship it seemed so destructive and in a way it almost cost him everything he had ever wanted. Scarlett on the other hand was in world of trouble with the whole situation with the record company but this feisty woman came out fighting and I was rooting for her! I adored Jake’s parents and I love the fact that Collette always includes the rest of the team in the story – they all have such strong personalities that it is great to see them again, I don’t think any of them would quietly slip into the background ,so by including the team dynamic brings them all to life. I have been a convert to the sport based novels, because of this series and I am really looking forward to the next book.
From two different pasts, two individuals will meet in their present and realize that opposites attract
Playing center field for the New York Kings, Jake Woodbury has one of the most prestigious jobs in all of sports. To the world, he's the good-looking, soft-spoken minister's son who’s survived celebrity without a hint of scandal. But, inside, he's reeling from a secret that seems destined to haunt him forever. Scarlett Moore is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, famous for singing about her celebrity ex-boyfriends. The CEO of her record label has carefully honed her provocative image since she was fifteen. Sex sells, and Scarlett’s well aware that it takes more than talent to stay on top. One thing is clear: She’s the last thing Jake needs. And he’s the do-gooder jock she should avoid at all costs. But when the game begins, all bets are off. (Amazon Blurb)
Jake is all man: he’s strong, he has stamina and most of all he exudes power and control simply by his presence in a room. On the flipside, Scarlett is all woman who knows her sexuality, having been groomed and taught how to use it to her advantage, and knows that the power in her voice can be used sensually as well, should she so desire. When these two meet, the chemistry is smoking and intense, and even though they believe they shouldn’t be together, they can’t deny the effect they have on each other. Their past history are incredibly different, one a minister’s son who makes it to the big leagues in hockey, and the other has been famous since the age of 15 and shown how to act to ensure her success in the long run. Collette West shows readers why sports romance genres are popular – they are spine tingling, entertaining, and best of all, captivating, especially when the characters are complete opposites. I enjoyed this book, found it had all the key elements that makes it a very good romance novel and most of all, it was relatable and the storyline interesting. As a first time reader of Collette West’s novels, I enjoyed my experience and will absolutely be adding her future and past titles on my to be read list and will certainly recommend Game Winning to other readers. . **Received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Read and reviewed by Kathleen for Alpha Book Club**
Scarlett wasn't expecting Jake to be anything more than a dumb jock with a pretty face, which is why she is caught off guard when she feels the intense chemistry that is flowing between them. She isn't the kind of girl to settle down but now Jake is making her question what she wants in life, and when she discovers some important news she begins to wonder if she can have it all. She has to make a decision and it may just end in a broken heart.
Jake thinks its fate that he met Scarlet, that she will give him the redemption that will finally ease all his pain. He is falling for her quickly and he knows that she feels the same; but the thing about secrets is that they are meant to stay hidden and not revealing his may just tear them apart. Can he open up to Scarlett and finally reveal the ghost that haunt him or will she be the one to finally tear him apart completely?
First of all Jake is a 10. He had me from the beginning of the story. He is just a guy that you love to love. He is sweet, caring, sexy, and I personally loved how dedicated he was to his religion. He was the whole package and the perfect book boyfriend. Scarlett was awesome too, I think that she is portrayed as being completely the opposite of Jake but I think that they share many of their good qualities its just that Jake was more open about them. I really loved them as a couple and how far they came together. They gave each other the strength to move forward and to grow.
I loved this book, it was absolutely perfect. It had the right amount of drama, mystery, and romance. I really enjoyed how I wasn't really certain how things were going to play out because the characters weren't certain and it almost felt like I was interacting with the them. I think that given their careers it is amazing how far they came. Lets not forget to mention how the epilogue managed to tie everything off in the best way possible by giving you a look of what their future is going to look like. I just really loved everything about this book. So that being said if I could give this book high than five stars I would, but since I can't they should definitely be five shiny gold stars.
P.S. I think that there should be an additional novella.
First -- definitely one of my favorite non-just-naked-male covers in the sport romance genre. I don't know what it is about the diamond and the couple... but the cover is gorgeous to me. I also love that the models fit the characters.
Second -- I haven't read anything by this author, so it's safe to say this was the first I'd heard of the New York Kings baseball team. I rather like this group of men... Well, for the most part. Some of the bachelors of the team have some growing up to do.
As for this book? This one deals with one of the few bachelors on the team, and his desire for more -- a better batting average, a better life, a better girl. He's done the 'regular' thing, but she left him for the pitcher, and Jake "Woodchucker" Woodbury has been in a slump.
Now Jake... he had his country bumpkin moments for me, and they were generally all laced with "preacher's kid" moments. He didn't often scream 'alpha' to me, but he was an enjoyable male lead (and I loved him in the epilogue). I love that when he first notices Scarlett, it's when she's singing the National Anthem. He's one of those players who you watch during the anthem -- standing still, maybe mouthing the words, but beyond that, full respect for the flag. His being drawn to the voice, him turning his head when he didn't normally? It was as if something was drawing him toward her (if Jake would tell you, he'd likely say it was God, both during the anthem and after he'd asked for a sign).
This was a cute story. Some of the ball players were more high school than annoying jock, but other than those few times, the players were definitely falling in the stereotype. I found Jake to be a bit more naive than his character truly called for, but he was still fun to read. Then there was Scarlett, who made an image for herself -- an image that definitely doesn't go along well with preacher's kid turned All-American baseball player, but these two were definitely the right mix for one another.

This is the first book I read by the author. This is not the LAST book I will read by the author. I love a great romance. I love baseball. I love baseball romance.
I was concern in the beginning I was going to read an inspirational romance devoid of any smexy times. I’m so glad that is not the case. The author created something new and mixed religion with a love story.
Jake Woodbury, sexy centerfielder of the New York Kings has no idea how gorgeous he is. All the ladies love him and even some men. However, with all the women throwing themselves at him, he refuses to be the manwhore jock everyone wants him to be.
He is dealing with a broken relationship that has created a burden of guilt, doubt and faith. He guards his secret, not letting anyone get close enough to find out, even his parents.
When Jake meets the gorgeous rock star Scarlett Moore, his life changes. He feels instantly connected to her and her voice as she sings the National Anthem at the KING’s playoff game.
Scarlett is the complete opposite. There is not anything the two of them could possibly have in common. But Jack’s kisses make her forget he is a do-gooder. Jake is successful, kindhearted and intensively passionate. He is not the wholesome guy in the bedroom. That’s what makes him so darn sexy and irresistible.
Dating Scarlett, Jake is forced to confront celebrity, tabloids and her record label. It’s time for him to decide if she is worth sharing his secret with. Can he survive another heartbreak?
The Game Winner is an emotional journey. Its touching, sizzling, and the writing sings! The smexy will steam you up! An emotional romance every baseball fan will love.
What I enjoyed the most about this story was how Colette West brought Scarlett and Jake together. At a glance these two are complete opposites--Scarlett's wild child reputation vs. Scott's well known clean-cut preacher's son presence. This disparity is personalities was what made things so great between these two. Add to that the intense chemistry they shared and you've got yourself one intriguing story.
I found myself immediately invested in Scarlett and Scott's relationship because I truly wanted to see how they would manage not only their celebrity statuses but also their different beliefs. I appreciated the fact that the author allowed me the chance to get to know Scarlett and Scott and what drove them in life. As I got to know them better I came to understand where they each were coming from which allowed me to see how well they complemented each other.
Scarlett and Scott shared some great candid moments as well as some tempestuos exchanges. But the moments that stood out for me the most were the honest interactions where they let their guards down. Of course, their intimate moments were enjoyable as well. I especially enjoyed seeing Scott let go of his control and seeing that passionate side of his. It sure made for some steamy reading!
Although this is the sixth book in the New York Kings series it can be read as a stand alone. I've yet to read the previous books in the series and I had no problem following the story along. In any case, I became intrigued by the other couples and have added their books to my TBR.
All in all, a very enjoyable read.

Gamer Winner by Collette West is a story of love against the odds, over coming painful pasts & learning to love and trust again. This is the 6th book in the series and the 1st I've read of the series, I'm sure each book can be read as a standalone because I didn't feel lost when only reading this book.
Jake Woodbury, center fielder for the New York Kings, loves his job. To everyone else Jake appears to be the extremely attractive, "choir boy" who stays out of the media spotlight. Jake has a strong relationship with God but feels pained by his past. When Jake hears Scarlett Moore sing the national anthem before one of his games he knows he needs to met the Angel who voice that belongs too. Scarlett, pop princess who's known for catchy ex-boyfriend break up songs, is doing her best to keep her head over water in the rough music industry with a boss who only wants the hottest thing. Scarlett has spent years looking out only for herself, fighting to be number one but can she let someone else in?
I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't your stereotypical sports romance when boy meets girl and they fall in love. We had an unusual painful pasts which became obstacles to a happy future. Can two people with high profile carriers, busy schedules, painful backstories overcome to find their own HEA? You'll need to read it to find out. Game Winner is a Home Run - 4 Stars!

A super good-guy, preacher's son hottie baseball player and a Taylor-Swift-like pop singer--sounds like a grand slam, right?
There was a lot to like about this one--Jake really is a great guy, giving his all on the field, to his fans, and for those he cares about. Scarlett is a heroine to root for--she's trying to take her career back from the slime ball who's been controlling it since she was essentially forced to trade her v-card for stardom, getting out from under his thumb and finally having the chance to play the music she wants to play.
All good things.
What didn't work as well for me: I didn't really feel their relationship. It went from zero to about a million in a millisecond; even the bit leading up to the epilogue didn't feel completely genuine. I also had a hard time with the speed with which Zack went from chastity guy to I need to have sex before every game or I'll stink up the field man.
Though kudos to him for having super alpha sperm, that's for sure. I'm still scratching my head over his bizarre relationship with his ex, though. Even after the explanation...
Game Winner is the sixth in the series, but it worked well as a standalone. It's clear that there's plenty of backstories with the other couples on the team, but I didn't feel as if I missed out on anything major not having read them yet.
Rating: 3 stars / C+

You didn't see me but before I started reading Game Winner, I did a little dance of joy when it popped up in my library. I was so freaking excited - Jake was finally getting his happily ever after!!! I couldn't wait to meet the women who was going to steal his heart.
I love the New York Kings series - I have devoured every single book and each time Jake Woodbury fell a little short of getting the girl, my heart broke for him. He's such a nice guy and I desperately wanted someone to only see him. Scarlett Moore - a racy, rock star turned out to be just that person.
This relationship surprised everyone. From the moment these two locked eyes and to the last page of their story, Jake and Scarlett had this crazy attraction for one another. They couldn't keep their lust in check and it made their encounters exciting. Their passion and feelings for one another just cannot be ignored. It's seriously awesome. Page after page left me smiling and feeling giddy.
These two have several challenges they need to overcome and lots of drama they have to deal with. It makes for entertaining reading and leaves you rooting for Jake and Scarlett. I absolutely loved it.
Don't miss out on this new sports romance - Jake and Scarlett's love story is a must read!
Game Winner was my first introduction to the New York Kings. I'm tempted to go back and read the other books in the Kings series. This book delivered just what I was hoping for when I read the synopsis. (Game Winner can be read as a stand-alone. I wish I had read the other books in the series for even more backstory, but I didn't need it to thoroughly enjoy this one!)
Jake Woodbury falls hard for Scarlett Moore. But, both have baggage. We're talking angst-ridden, self-doubt-filled, trunk-loads of baggage. But, the intense physical attraction and connection they have to one another is undeniable. They're soon wrapped up in an intense relationship, filled with potential career-related landmines and personal pit-falls.
I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into the Kings clubhouse. Game Winner was a character driven, angsty, sports romance with a satisfying HEA. If you enjoy sports related stories, characters with great chemistry and interesting plotlines, add Game Winner to your TBR today!

This was a really good book. Jake Woodbury plays center field for the New York Kings baseball team. He's gorgeous, known to be a minister's son, and he might be a baseball player but he's not a player with women. During one of the Kings games, he hears Scarlett Moore sing the national anthem and he is just inspired by her beautiful voice.
Jake Woodbury is known to be religious and he doesn't really fall prey to peer pressure. His father is a minister and he has always wanted to make his parents proud and God. He has a terrible secret that is eating him up inside and it is causing him to push his parents away and not play baseball as well as he should. Scarlett Moore's voice and herself makes him drawn to her and interested in a relationship.
Scarlett Moore is a world famous pop singer and she's known for singing songs about her ex-boyfriends. The CEO for her record label has her wearing the skimpiest clothes and all kinds of things to be seen as sexy. She's been wanting to do better music but he just keeps stopping her and expecting her to do what he says. Jake is definitely different than what she usually goes for but there is something so great about him. She wants to be with him but she doesn't know if he is over his ex-girlfriend Roberta.
Wonderfully written. Jake & Scarlet's story is fun, sexy & heartbreaking. Jake's the Major League Baseball player son of a minister & he's looking for the one person who can complete him & heal him. Scarlet's a young chart topping pop star whose parents never had time for her, so she looked for love & attention anywhere she could get it...real or not. While singing the national anthem at one of Jake's games he feels her voice rush through him & then proceeds to turn up the heat. After meeting for the first time when he escorts her to a charity event they become involved. But the past year has been difficult for Jake & he's hoping that things will definitely turn out better now because he's not going to let Scarlet get past him. Scarlet is also battling a problem herself in the form of her record companies CEO & her former lover who doesn't want to pursue the direction she does for her next album. What neither of them expect is for her to get pregnant their first time together. Now besides worrying about making it to the World Series he's worried about Scarlet & the baby she's not sure she wants to have. With the past staring them straight in the eye & their different careers getting in the way can Jake make Scarlet see that they belong together? Looking forward to the next book.
Jake Woodbury is the complete opposite to the other New York Kings players that have come before him. Firstly, he is not a player; secondly his belief in God and helping others comes before his own needs; and thirdly he has a deep seeded guilt from events in his past which is preventing him from moving forward with his life.
Pop star Scarlett has had a number of men in her life and is not afraid to enjoy her life but she wants control of her career and the direction of her music. Singing at a Kings' game gives Scarlett the chance to showcase her true potential and brings her into Jake's sights.
This is a story of struggles and overcoming them. Jake in trying to reconcile his life and his belief in God. Scarlett in taking control of her career. An unlikely couple but one that works well as they help bring perspective to the other.
Another great instalment to the Kings' series that pulls you into the lives of the characters, their stories and the game of baseball.
This is the first book I have read by Collette and it certainly won't be my last! Jake is a baseball player struggling to come to terms with something that happened in his past! Scarlett sings at one of Jake's games and he is so entranced by her voice that he wants to get to know her! Scarlett eyes Jake as he's playing a game and when their eyes lock their is a connection they both seem to feel from afar! I loved the way they got to know each other! I felt sad about aspects of both their lives and as with any relationship theirs had lots of hiccups! Learning certain things about Jake as well as Stella you can come to understand why they are both the way they are! I really enjoyed this story of love! It was different and the characters certain;y had challenges to face! All in all a great story and I did shed a few tears too!
Opposites definitely attract in the newest book in the NY Kings series. Jake and Scarlett are about as different as two people can be, except for their love of music. Jake's image is squeaky clean, while Scarlett puts is all out there with her music. But all is not as it seems as Jake deals with guilt over events from his past and Scarlett tries to break free from the image her record label has created. Their connection - both emotionally and physically - is amazing and had me rooting for them to figure out how to have all they both deserve. As a fan of baseball, I love that the game is an important part of the story and not just a backdrop. I've loved this series so far and I hope their are more books to come!
I received an ARC for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.
This is the sixth book in the series. If you're a baseball fan you will enjoy this one because it gives you the behind the scenes look during the post season. One of my favorite parts. Jake has some demons he needs to his way through. Scarlett is a famous pop singer who is not into jocks, but that all changes the night she sings the national anthem at a Kings game. This unlikely pair soon find themselves drawn to one another. The heat between them is hot! This book definitely has your emotions going. You see both Scarlett and Jake grow and find their true selves. It's a struggle for sure, but the reward for their journey is well worth it.
Jake Woodbury of the New York Kings Baseball Team, is a good guy. When he sees Scarlett Moore, he probably is one of the only people who doesn't know who she is. He is attracted to her but Scarlett has a reputation of going through boyfriends as quickly as she has hit songs. Put together the good ol boy and the girl where sex is part of her persona. Everything is not as it always seems and a few surprises along the way set the tone for a highly entertaining story.
From the beginning when Jake and Scarlett come together the chemistry is off the charts. I liked the difference between the two characters. Well worth picking up if you like sports romance stories.
Collette and the NYKs just get better and better. What an absolutely fantastic story teller she is. I was given this book in exchange for a fair and honest review but I would have paid the full price for it anyway. The two main characters are introduced right at the beggining but that doesn't stop an intense and passionate story unfolding. I just couldn't put the book down and read it on the day. SUPERB STORY TELLING and very highly recommended . .
