Amos McCarthy has owned and operated the Rafter M Ranch for at least thirty years in the upland ranges of Wyoming. In the beginning, renegade Indian bands had harassed him. Amos gained a fearsome reputation as a rancher who would tolerate no depredation. He even became skilled at prowling Indian-style at night, killing unsuspecting predators with a knife. Later came rustlers and Amos dealt with them in the same way, hanging those who survived his armed offensives. Even though now an older man, he has lost none of his determination to give no quarter to rustler bands.
