After a chance encounter, Emily gets swept into Herrik’s strange, preternatural world. Not everyone appreciates having her kind there, though. When she uncovers a plot that threatens to overthrow the delicate peace which exists there between his kind and hers, Emily must find the one person who can help reclaim Haeven and restore the balance.
Love, betrayal, intrigue and a slew of dynamic characters make Haeven a must-read for anyone who loves the mystical world of vampires.
Having never read this author, I didn't know what to expect from this book. I was drawn in by the first chapter by the unique and unusual way the heroine of the story was introduced into the vampire world. I wasn't disappointed by the rest either. So much more to the story than fangs and sex, as there really wasn't too much of either, just enough to enhance the overall storyline. I liked how the author portrayed the vampires as empathetic creatures who although they could be deadly, had integrity & honor and were living a secluded, rather peaceful existence of an almost altruistic nature. Emily & Herrick's eventual love was sweet, sacrificing, and saved the Haeven in the end. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to more from S.M. Bowles.
When Emily decides to help a stranger in need it leads to a series of mistakes and misunderstandings that force her into a world she never knew existed. She has a difficult time fitting in and accepting her fate but with the help of Herrik and a handful of others she comes to love her adopted home. Not everyone appreciates having her kind living among them, though, and after an attempt to overthrow all that Herrik and his people have built, Emily must find the one person who can help reclaim Haeven and restore the balance.

I was pleasantly surprised by the first book I read by this author and since this one was also available for free decided to give it a chance as well. Though it was quite a different story from the first it was equally entertaining. I think the author has a lot of potential and hope to see more work from him/her(?).
When 16 year old Emily helps a dying man (against his will may I add), her life changes forever. She is abducted and spends the next 7 years of her life in a different society within a self-contained compound of sorts. Over time, she matures and begins to see her captors as friends instead of monsters. She is faced with a decision to return to her (previously) normal life or to save the Haeven compound which formerly imprisoned her.
The vampires in this book were different than usual. They were highly intelligent, sometimes manipulative, well-educated, and had strong mental powers. Was there some fang and sex? Yes, but only as a side effect of the characters and not as the main show. The character and plot development are very good, and the love story develops at a reasonable pace. I enjoyed the story and writing style for this new-to-me author.
I received this good at the Goodreads Lovers of the Paranormal group for free in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I really like that it was not drawn out into several book but at the same time I would not mind seeing more Herrick and Emily. The characters were so in depth and for the most part everything wrapped up in the end. Only a few questions remained for me. What happened to Carah? And does Evan ever get to see her again?
So, hmmm. I'm really having a hard time deciding if I really liked this book. There were things about it that I just kept asking myself "huh?" The author seemed to think that her readers would automatically understand things that were unsaid. There were a few places where the dialog was such that characters would be thinking or speaking to one another and then apparently come to a conclusion or epiphany and say "oh!" and that would be it! It was like we should automatically have come to the same epiphany......maybe i'm just slow but I didn't get it!
I liked where the story ended but there was too much left out. What happened to the Carah and Freya?
