Unpretty

Rate this book
Being plain and average would be a step up for Sidonie. The book nerd, gamer geek with larger than average jeans doesn’t really fit in anywhere. Add a drunk father and a dump in the projects and she’s pretty much guaranteed to be a social pariah. There would never be a happily after in her future, unless her books counted. Instead, she has accepted her lot and surrounded herself with friends who genuinely love and support her.

Music. Art. Creating. That’s what made Sidonie remarkable. As she began to find a chance of happiness in her gifts, dark forces start to impact her future. A magical world she had no idea even existed could alter the course of her life forever—if it didn’t cut it short entirely.

Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but with the ability to claim eight states as home; Victoria Escobar writes fiction from her current home in New York. She writes whatever comes to mind and because of such has a variety of genres written including Young Adult, New Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy, and Contemporary Fiction.

In spare time if not with family, and friends Victoria enjoys curling up with a book from a favorite author with music playing. If not reading or writing she spends time drawing, sketching, crocheting, or some other random art project. She enjoys staying busy, but most of all enjoys staying creative.

She reads anything she can get her hands on, and devours a book in five hours or less. Victoria reads the Young adult books and the science fiction fantasy books more than anything else. However, she can be caught reading romance novels, and classics at times depending on her whimsy.

Growing up we often live in a world where unless you are blonde , tall , wear make-up or is born beautiful and slim - you are considered ugly or plain or in a more PC term - you are simply Unpretty. This book appealed to me as firstly , this is something I had to grow up with with the bullying as I never seemed to be able to fit into people's perspectives of what was pretty and beautiful and growing up without a proper caring mother-figure ( my mum had Autism) I never was taught the things like wearing make-up etc. The other thing that drew me to this book was the fact , that I am a geek or a book nerd as people might put it. I love my TV shows, my books - ask me the latest book I can tell you but the latest music and clubbing scenes aren't my style. Sometimes I wish they were, you then add in a dysfunctional family - I had that and then put yourself in the lower socio-economic bracket - again I was there and then you have someone who finds it really hard to fit in with the world and those around them. In a lot of ways, I found myself liking the character of Sidonie to myself in aspects. In Unpretty , Sidonie is creative with her music and art and soon finds a place for herself in a world that only exists to those who want to see it - it slowly becomes a dark place though, sucking in Sidonie's energies. Can she find the light at the end of the tunnel or will the darkness consume her one piece at a time, like it does for a few outcasts till there isn't anyone left ?

I found Unpretty to be a hard read and one that you have to be in the right mood to read otherwise you may struggle with the book as it was slow in places and I am normally a fast-paced reader.

Unpretty is the read for all those in the world who turn to blogs for friendship and a purpose and for anyone who has ever been called "Unpretty" or worse.

This book started out with a really great premise and some awesome underdog characters, but all of the sudden it became a different book 30-40% through. I didn't mind the fantasy twist, but it became too much too fast and too convenient and Sidonie took it all a little too easily for me and changed her attitude really quickly. And then there were parts that just flat out didn't make sense. I had to reread a lot of paragraphs and pages to figure out what the heck was going on, only to skip it because I couldn't make heads or tails of it. I sadly only made it to the 55% mark before I gave up.

Very interesting. Characters were likeable. Plot was interesting. It seems similar to other fairy tale based fantasy books that I've read. It was enjoyable, but would have been better with more details and character personality development.

Sidonie Gillian Bellamy doesn’t want to be rescued by a knight. She would just love to be considered average, instead of being viewed as a book nerd and unpretty. She lives in the projects with her father, a drunk, while her mother fights for her life in the hospital. She does have friends who support her, such as Wren and Ormand, but it is really her music that sustains her. Sidonie is remarkably gifted in the creative arts, but she has little confidence in her abilities.

Sidonie is chosen to be the guide for Deveroux, a French exchange student at her high school. She is less than impressed, as he is a “pretty person.” She expects him to join the ranks of the others who constantly belittle her, but Sidonie is in for a surprise. Deveroux turns out to be unlike anybody she has ever known, almost magical, even.

As situations cause Sidonie to feel that everything is crashing in on her, she realizes this is her time to fly and her life is about to change forever. Will she take the opportunities placed before her? How will she respond when she learns the truth about Deveroux?

This is a relatable book, as most people have felt “unpretty” at some point in their lives and just want someone to believe in them. Well-developed, strong (especially the female) characters abound. While there are some editorial issues, the raw emotion is evident throughout. The pace is appropriate, and there is a surprise twist at the end. Escobar weaves in some empowering messages throughout, such as:

• “If you give respect — in most instances—you’ll receive it back. Hate, jealousy, superiority— those things only breed dissension and more negativity. (Deveroux)
• “Stop looking at yourself through the eyes of others.” (Wren)
• “…inner strength…comes from confidence and self-esteem.” (Wren)

MAY CONTAIN SPOILER:

This book was interesting and fabulous!

My favorite character is Dex because he gave up everything he had for a girl he barely even knew. He protected her, became her friend and lived happily ever after.

My favorite part is when they all defy the Queen.
