Matthew Richter #2

An Eye For An Eye

Rate this book
A powerful drug lord threatens to knock America to its knees. Only one man can stop him.

Save the president or save his lover? Two years ago, Secret Service Agent Matthew Richter faced the most difficult decision of his life, knowing that by saving the former, the latter would die. In the aftermath, he fled Washington and the agency that failed him. With wounds he’s certain will never heal, he seeks refuge behind a gun as the commander of an FBI SWAT team in New York. After a raid turns sour and Richter is sidelined, possibly for good, he is reluctantly drawn back to Washington by the man he once saved.

When drug cartels threaten to topple the Mexican government and the violence begins to spill across the border, Richter tells President David Kendall it’s time to take off the gloves. One by one, cartel warehouses and tunnels are raided and their drug caches destroyed. One by one, their sprawling compounds and bank accounts are seized. One by one, drug lords are targeted and killed. One by one—all except, that is, for Pablo Guerrero, the ruthless head of the Sangre Negras cartel, who has only grown stronger as others have fallen.

When the hunt for Guerrero finally draws first blood, he unleashes a war no one is prepared for. Now Richter must stop him before it’s too late.

An Eye For An Eye is the action-packed sequel to In Sheep’s Clothing, L.D. Beyer’s gripping debut novel.

After stumbling upon the work of L.D. Beyer, I was quite curious to read this second political thriller! The book has strong political elements that differed greatly from the series debut and kept me reading well into the night. Matthew Richter has been enjoying the last few years after his heroic act that helped saved the US President. Having hung up his Secret Service credentials, he’s now working with the FBI. However, a new enemy emerges and the US President needs Richter’s help. Richter must advise the president as a ruthless Mexican cartel leader flexes his muscle. The country is in danger but Richter will once again do all he can to help create a sense of stability. Beyer impresses and leaves the reader in awe!

After risking it all and losing the woman he loved a few years ago, Matthew Richter left the Scret Service and the chaos of Washington. He found solace working for an FBI SWAT team in New York, able to control his destiny a little more and not face having to protect the US president. A botched raid goes badly and Richter is injured, putting his future in jeopardy. Once again he is faced with a major decision. However, new love in his life has Richter seeing at least some of the silver lining.

With the Mexican Government teetering on the edge after a major cartel strikes, North American tensions increase. The violence and bloodshed seeps over the Us-Mexico border, leaving President David Kendall ready to act. He must protect his people and help his Mexican counterpart. Using many of his resources, President Kendall starts closing down the means of production these cartels hold dear. He will, however, need a formidable weapon in his arsenal, which comes once the president convinces Matthew Richter to return to D.C.

One of the most powerful cartel leaders, Pablo Guerrero, stands firm and has been able to continue exacting horrible violence. He has new strength and determination, as well as a plan to send the Americans away cowering in fear. His resources seem endless and he has some new partners that could truly cause havoc. Patience is the name of the game and Guerrero is ready to strike.

As Guerrero sends out his troops and ensures massive bloodshed, President Kendall can only watch in horror as a major US city is targeted. With Guerrero in hiding and Mexican resources limited, all eyes turn to Richter and his team to save America. Beyer impressed once again and leaves the reader wondering if there will be more to this series, which appears to have gone quiet.

While I had not heard of L.D. Beyer until recently, I am pleased his writing crossed my path. Beyer offers up another great novel that mixes politics and significant action. The narrative opens well and only strengthens its foundation with each passing chapter. The story soon gains momentum as the ideas come together and tensions mount. Beyer presents a number of key characters who are intriguing in their own regard. Short chapters and number vignettes in each allow the reader to see the full picture with different points of view to better understand what is taking place. Plot points are key to pushing things forward and the tension is tied to the repeated twists that emerge as the action becomes essential. I cannot deny being a tad disappointed there are not more novels in this series and hope something emerges before too long.

Kudos, Mr. Beyer, for another strong political thriller.

Here is an author that is defiantly on my “Looking out for the next book” list. I loved the 1st book “In Sheep’s Clothing”. I recommend reading it before this one. Just to get into the main hero's character. It’s one of those fast pacing books. Pure enjoyment. That’s what books are for. Isn’t it!?
The only problem with that book – It was too short.

Another great read from L.D. Beyer, with some of the same characters from 'In Sheep's Clothing'. A home run, in my opinion, and I plan on reading more by this author. The books are easy to read & dig into, without being juvenile & trite.

The sequel to In Sheep's Clothing finds former Secret Service Agent in a new job as commander of an FBI SWAT team in New York two years after turning his back on Washington. However, temporarily taken out of action after taking a bullet during a raid, he is invited back to the White House when President David Kendall finds himself in need of a new National Security Advisor just as his joint project with the Mexican government to combat powerful drug cartels with extreme measures escalates into unforeseen levels of violence.

Actionpacked and hard to put down, just like the first book. I'll be keeping an eye out for the next one.

All tied together

This is a great book for action lovers. Reminds me of early Brad Thor. Good pace, nice connections, clear characters. Just different enough to keep your attention.

A Killer Thriller!

LD Beyer surely left a great first impression with „In Sheep‘s Clothing”, but with “An Eye For An Eye” Beyer delivers a phenomenal sequel, which not only surpasses it’s predecessor by far, “An Eye For An Eye” is also one of my all-time favorites in the genre, combining a fresh premise with rich character development and a detailed and fascinating view into the political mechanisms of DC and the inner workings of emergency responders. This book grabs you from the start and doesn’t let go!

When you read Mr. Beyer’s Acknowledgement, you can tell that research is very important to him, an impression that only intensifies while reading the book. Be it the war on drugs, the political procedures behind the scenes or the emergency response to the explosion of a dirty bomb in a subway on US soil, you can never quite tell where the facts end and where the fiction starts, which is crucial for me to enjoy the read!

Another big plus are the characters we already met in the first book and which continue to grow on me, especially Kendall and Richter. But the secret star for me is not Pablo Guerrero (he is a great bad guy nonetheless) but Terry Fogel a mercenary with a fascinating view on life. I surely hope to see more of him in future novels!

Please continue this awesome series, Mr. Beyer!

I was offered An Eye for an Eye for an honest review; having read the first book, In Sheep’s Clothing, I quickly agreed. I loved In Sheep’s Clothing, and this sequel is even better! Once again, Beyer delivered; this was just as suspenseful, if not more! The fast pace action in An Eye for an Eye kept me reading non-stop! It’s impossible to put this book down. His characters were well developed in book 1, but somehow Beyer was able to add more in book 2. Well written, quick read and exceptional writing. I recommend this book to anyone who loves action. This is a HUGE 5 Boundless stars!...Beth

Although containing some of the same main characters from "In Sheep's Clothing", this is pretty much a stand alone action novel. Richter is no longer with the secret service, but with the FBI and then National Security Advisor. And naming Richter as the main character is a stretch. The president and the bad guys get as much 'page time' as Richter.

As of today there is no third novel listed. Hopefully Beyer will write another Richter thriller. He doesn't overplay the character as so many authors tend to do when faced with the success of a series. Good solid writing with very little wasted verbiage. Well worth the time to read.

FBI Agent Matthew Richter gets a call from an old friend, who just so happens to be the POTUS. The position of National Security Advisor has become vacant, and the President wants Matthew to take the job. NSA Richter must learn the ropes quickly if he is to advise the President on Mexico’s war against the drug cartels and a series of debating terrorist attacks, all while maintain a long distance relationship with his girlfriend in New Jersey.

This book was a sequel to one I read and really enjoyed last year, but it just wasn’t as good. There were too many moving pieces, too many unbelievable plot points (i.e., the president picking someone with zero foreign affairs experience as his NSA), and a really cheesy love affair. Some of the action scenes were fun, but even they progressed more out of convenience than actual effort.

Excellent Read!

Both this book and it’s predecessor, In Sheep’s Clothing, were hard to put down. Wrapping the story about Matthew Richter’s journey, first as a secret service agent then as a trusted friend of the President, around real world concerns is a masterpiece of a tale. And the “backstory” of this series is so different from his very well written first thriller was, The Devil’s Due, shows just how learned and versatile an author L.D. Beyer is. I can’t wait until the release of the next book in the series and look forward to many more great books from him!

"An Eye for an Eye" is the second book by Mathew Richter. Matt Richter (could read Ethan Hawke from Mission Impossible) is injured in his Swat Team, the President (who he rescued "In Sheep's Clthing") asks him to be National Security Advisor.

I hope I'm not be too hard, but I was in hospital getting better and possibly getting pretty bored, but another tale of the impossible being achieved just didn't sit well with me.

Three stars.

An Eye for an Eye is a great political thriller. The pace of the story is quick, the characters are realistic, and the story seems to come from the headlines of our newspapers. I highly recommend reading this book, and more from this author. Thanks to Goodreads First Reads for a copy of An Eye for an Eye.

As you might imagine from the cover, this book is full of action. The story line is good and invites you in, characters are built out well, and there is always a cliff hanger to leave you wanting more. The amount of characters involved throughout the book can be overwhelming though. If you can keep them all in line then this book is definitely worth a read!

Fast paced action

While the action is constant it has moments where it slows down (read that as a pause to stop for the night). The stories seem timely with current events and I think this story serves to remind us that not every threat is from over there.

Not as good as Book 1

This may be more of a man's book but it was a well-written, well-designed book and the latter can be as important as the former. I will be looking for the next Michael Richter book to read.

Author L.D. Beyer provided me with a print copy of AN EYE FOR AN EYE, for review.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE is the second Matthew Richter Thriller offered by L.D. Beyer. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series, In Sheep's Clothing. So, I was expecting to enjoy this book as well. Well... I was not disappointed! Beyer elevates the franchise with this political/action thriller.

This L.D. Beyer guy may be on to something with this series.

As with the last book, it is refreshing to read fiction where the government is not populated by liars, cheats, and ego maniacal sleaze-balls. The politicians in this book are honorable people actually concerned with the welfare of the people. Well, it is fiction.

Matthew Richter is a well presented hero. He is not overly macho, not full of false bravado, not ego driven, not even a womanizer. He is a man uncomfortable with the mantle of responsibility placed upon him. Truly, the reluctant hero. His character is well developed, as are the other characters in this story.

Of course, he is the person who can resolve the problem at hand (It is his book after all), though he is not a one man army. He works and plays well with others. It is great to see that the military personnel, he works with are competent, intelligent people. Well trained and devoted to their duty (another rarity today).

This time around, Richter is matching wits with a ruthless Mexican drug lord (is there any other kind?). The action is fast, the violence brutal and graphic, but not gratuitous. Romance plays a part as well, but you really can't label this a romance by any stretch.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE does not rely solely on anger, hatred and violence to tell its story. There are very powerful, emotional moments that will break the heart of the reader (ah, ah, ah...no spoilers here).

If you are looking for an action oriented read that will play with your emotions, AN EYE FOR AN EYE by L.D. Beyer fits the bill admirably. Enjoy!

Really enjoyed this second entry. I don't think any first time readers will be confused, the essential bits about the first book are there without any spoilers other than a positive outcome which is implied by being a sequel and one death. The constantly changing point of view is handled more tightly, but readers who dislike this style will still dislike the number of views. Our intrepid hero is now working for the FBI on a Joint Task Force in NY. He soon is called back to DC to help the president on a big drug enforcement operation. Really interesting take on cartels and national security. Enjoy Matthew a lot and the president as well.
