Miller is the last Englishman. It's not a title he enjoys because it means that whenever the looters and the treasure hunters come across the Atlantic to the ruins of his country, it's his job to hunt them down. That is, if the packs of wild dogs don't kill them first. Or the collapsing buildings. Or the disease.
Miller soon finds himself helping a former US Ranger, Claudia Riley, hunt for her missing nephew who's disappeared somewhere in England. The US want him found too - him and his Russian girlfriend who they suspect are planning to stage a terrorist attack from one of the many underground bunkers that now lie empty. All is not what it seems however as they soon find themselves under attack from a US jet that leaves Riley critically injured.
Bringing all his training and survival skills to bear, Miller has to keep the US Ranger alive despite the sudden onset of a harsh winter and the roaming packs of starving dogs. He finds, however, that his love for her might also be the death of him.
Can they hope to complete their mission or will the powers behind the real terror attack get to them first? And can Miller dare to hope that in the overgrown wastelands of England he might find happiness at last?
Amazon bestselling author of over 15 titles including the post-apocalyptic ‘Tales from the Brink’ series, the Miller & Riley books and the sci-fi military series TRIDENT.
I like a story that grabs me and gives me a hell of a ride and this one did that for me. I went into this book with trepidation but was pleasantly surprised.
Didn't, think this was my kind of book. How wrong I was. Enthralling from the beginning. The story sucks you in. Characters are believable, and you care what happens to them. All I can say is if there is not a sequel, it will be a shame, as there are several unanswered . Read and enjoy.
If like me you like tales of survival, post apocalyptic landscapes ,intriguing plots and sub plots, a beautiful women and set in Britain, then you will enjoy this book. Charles - Camry am byth
It only took me two evenings to read this book. The beginning intrigued me, and the next day after work I actually felt a twinge of something I haven't felt in a while: I wanted to get back to the book to see what would happen next. The story isn't bogged down by details of what had happened to the environment Miller lives in, and the book reveals things as necessary, not choking the reader with chapters full of back story that kills the interest.
I do recommend this book for readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic books. I would have given it five stars, since I do want to read the rest of the series, but the editing is a bit lacking. Don't get scared off because of that, this is worth reading. The mistakes are almost funny, rather than jarring. Fortunately, the story is engaging and creative, with a sense of realism that works well with the narrative.
For those who think Riley might be a bit over the top, particularly with how much she curses, I'd like to defend her. I've spent time with a number of military women just out of the service, and some were very much like Riley's character (not all). I found her crass and... I found the ex-military folks just out of the service that I have spent time with very much like her, particularly the young ones.
All said, I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
I really liked this novel. The author pulls you in from the very beginning to the very end. You feel like you were dropped into the storyline and were walking beside the characters on their journeys. I don't always like first person POV but this author succeeded in pulling it off. The writing style, the visuals and descriptions were all well done. Given it was first person, there was never a description of Miller's physical traits however -no age, no first name, no eye color, hair color nor skin color - and very little physical attributes of most of the other characters come to think of it... except for Riley. Yet it didn't matter. I think the author succeeded on the internal, rather than the external, in regards to his characters.
The only problem with self-publishing though is the presence of typos or grammar errors. Although it did not take away from my enjoyment of the book, it is still unfortunate. I feel that this author would be more successful if he invested in more proofreading. He already has the gift of story telling but the quality is decreased if peppered with typos here and there.
Well thought out and imaginative Post Apocalyptic tale set in a desolate England. The protagonist and narrator, Miller, is the last man standing and lives off the land whilst tracking down would-be treasure hunters for the United States. He teams up with a former US Ranger, Claudia Riley, on a special mission that ends up being a lot more than it seems. Initially, Pass tries a little bit too hard to convince us what a bad-ass Riley is, but eventually manages to curb his enthusiasm. The story turns into a perilous road trip that moves swiftly along and is always entertaining. Very enjoyable read.
Project 16 is a good book but I'm not sure why it has such a high goodreads score.
It's slow going for the most part with a few splatters of action here and there. The synopsis makes it seem like an epic tail of the last Englishmen but IMO it's definitely not, the story is rather watery.
Overall it's fairly well written and very descriptive when it comes to survival techniques and post apocalyptic Britan but has long stretches of nothingness. The characters are likable but I just wasn't invested in them to care that much when anything actually happens.
I wish this was a little bit better. The story/world is actually pretty good, and the plot and characters were for the most part well written. However the whole was just bullshit. It was heavy handed, and trite, and contrived and I didn't enjoy it at all. For me, it completely sucked any enjoyment out of the book, and left my eyes sore from rolling so hard. If it wasn't for that, this would have been a solid three stars from me.
Love a good post apocalyptic, and this one was great. The characters were engaging. Not too much blood and gore, it was as upbeat as fits something written about the end of the world as we know it. Some loose ends at the end but maybe they're tidied up in the sequel. It progressed well. Some good original ideas. Riley and Miller's relationship develops reasonably well, the political relationships between the US, the UK and Russia are interesting and create a great backdrop. Will be looking out for the sequel!
I read this book in just over a weekend. It was totally thrilling. The lead characters were very likeable and I am glad it worked out for them. The idea that England was a waste land with me sitting here in England was spooky. How awful to live like that. Great book with adventure and survival and a touch of love.
I can tell you that the book was well written. I am glad there were no glaring mistakes! "Riley" is a woman who has lived thru a lot, I am glad she finally gave into her love for Martin. Good Book!!!!
I really enjoyed this new approach to what will be the demise of American society as we know it. Novel and exciting with wide spectrum of characters. Will not revel the answers. Must read.
I thought the author mixed this genre up very well, especially making the U.S. the bad guys. Not especially proud of the way my country bullies other nations, but American authors in this genre always seem to only apply our government acting poorly directly to its own citizens rather than worldwide.
Excellent character development. Vivid descriptions that make it easy to visualize this post apocalyptic world. Tight storyline with no fluff. Every word is important so I didn't skim at all.
Currently reading the follow up, The Brink, and reaching the point where I know this will spill into another book unless the author does the unthinkable...
The first 2/3 of this book were quite interesting, rich characters, good post-apocalyptic survival techniques, reasonable world building, some new ideas. And then everything collapsed (just like civilization does). The first sign was an increase in typos. Then the sentence structure and grammar got shaky. Characters behavior became completely incongruent - honest to God, it's just like what happens when you start developing whatever the virus of the end is. Finally, all coherence was really, really lost. Somebody found the unfinished manuscript, tossed a lot of words in with the character names mentioned, and self-published it. Very very crazy. I'd love it if someone could tell me what actually happened.
This was a well written, exciting read...with an unusual story plot. I loved it and hated to put it down the couple of times I had to for work or dinner. I will definitely search for more stories by this author. Thanks Mr. Pass!
First thoughts: Cracking good story with likeable and engaging characters and
This was a fun read - good details, the hero believable and decent, the baddies also. At first I was struggling to work out this world, what was The Panic - but then I just decided to go with it and enjoy the story. I struggle with first person pov unless the story draws me in quickly, and this one certainly did.
A couple of grammar errors that should have been picked up on proof-reading:
Scattered around the floor WAS Alex's tools.... My dad might OF, but I wasn't about to do so.
And I don't know whether it was just me, but the title page had the word 'PROJECT' split into 'PROJEC' with the 'T' below it. It was a little off-putting at first.
I also found the use of numbers somewhat clumsy:
3 days to live. 4 kids, barely over 17.... 35 years did that to you. What else did I have to engage with? 5 simple senses...
But this was a good read and I am going to catch up on more from this author.
This I the first book I have read from this author and I was stunned how much I enjoyed this story. The story finds us in a deserted England in total ruin after decades of being abandoned by its population. The protagonist is the last English man in England and he's a pure survivalist, living off the land and tracking down people who enter England looking for treasure and returning them home. Then along comes a most enjoyable story line that I'll let you find out about yourself.
