It was more than another blind date . . .
It was DEA Agent Caden Cooke’s third chance to impress beautiful chef Mia Martin. He’d already stood her up twice, and was shocked she was even giving him another chance. For Caden, taking down the bad guys is important, but Mia’s made it clear there’s no excuse for his bad behavior. So he’s vowed to make it worth her while with an apology he’s cooked up just for her.
From the moment they meet, it’s clear this isn’t just another fix up. The sparks flying between them are undeniable; the tension is electric. Then, suddenly, the best moments of their lives turn treacherous when a drug dealer set on revenge puts their lives in danger. And Mia and Caden quickly realize they will do anything to protect the other—and live for the love neither of them expected.
Jennifer Ryan, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Hunted and McBrides Series, writes romantic suspense and contemporary small-town romances.
Jennifer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and three children. When she isn’t writing a book, she’s reading one. Her obsession with both is often revealed in the state of her home, and how late dinner is to the table. When she finally leaves those fictional worlds, you’ll find her in the garden, playing in the dirt and daydreaming about people who live only in her head, until she puts them on paper.

I requested this on a whim. I was interested in a full length story in this series, but saw the novella and figured it would be a good way to see what it was like.
I loved Mia and Caden. They're both snarky and strong and just really good people. I enjoyed how loyal and protective they were to each other. The connection between them came quickly and it was easy to see.
The story was fast paced and fairly believable. I enjoyed the action, but I loved the sweet moments even more. And the epilogue was perfection. I'll definitely be checking out the next book.
**Huge thanks to Avon Books for providing the arc free of charge**
There is something about a story written by Jennifer Ryan. She has this ability to suck you in and keep you there. She writes such great hero's. You just want to know them. Each story I read of her's I fall a little bit more in love with her writing.
I'm always excited when she starts a new series. All new hero's to love. Her stories are always hero driven. So sexy!
In Protected by Love you meet Caden Cooke and Mia Martin. Two very likable characters. This is only a novella but you feel like their story is a full one. I finished the book very satisfied. I really loved Mia! The woman was kick ass. Probably one of Ryan's strongest women and that's saying a lot because her ladies go through a ton of crap.
I also really liked Caden. He was so worried throughout about both his brother and Mia. I'd love to explain more but I don't want to ruin the story for you. Just know, that you won't be sorry reading it.
Protected By Love is the perfect start to this new series and I can't wait for more.
These two sexy hot DEA agents were introduced to us back in the Montana Men series, Stone Cold Cowboy. Every since that menacing and spectacular intro, I have been wanting to have a bit more of them both. Now, with this introduction to a new series we are almost picking up where we left off with these two brothers.
Back to the man at hand, Caden. Three blind dates set up. Twice stood up. The third time turns in to an adventure that would tell you to stay away. Far, far away. This was not so the case. Caden and Mia have one mind blowing blind date that turns into so much more for them both.
Drug dealers, escaped criminals, car chases, frying pan, shots fired, tender touch, long kisses, and so much more. Jennifer Ryan quickly became one of my favorite authors when I was introduced to her last year. I have read almost every series she has created. I always find a read that transports me and leaves me excited to make it to the next book or the next new series.
I'm completely enamored with this novella, the action-packed, explosive start of the new series that had me holding my breath with anticipation and swooning over the incredible, charming, kickass hero and heroine! This is going to be an awesome series! DEA Agent Caden Cooke is as alpha as they come, a protective and capable leader who is tough when needed. He takes care of those he cares for, his family high up on the list of his priorities. He has been submerged in his job and is ready for a change. He has an adorable romantic side, that won my heart over and came a bit as a surprise. Mia Martin can hold her own in a fight. She is smart, beautiful, independent, with kindness and inner strength that are admirable. Together Mia and Caden set off some serious spark. They fit together, like two parts of a whole. It is palpable how much they like each other, enjoy the company and have fun when in each other's presence. For a novella, the author has managed to pack the pages with lots of story, character development, and depth. All the secondary characters contributed to the plot development and setting up the stage for the new series. The hero and heroine have one heck of a first date, but they are more than survivors, they are fighters, and not giving up. The feelings they have for each other might seem like they are developing fast and furiously, yet the circumstances make it believable and enjoyable to see them fall so hard and completely. The wonder and amazement of their own feelings and about the other's existence are delightful, the timing and spacing of the storyline absolutely perfect. Lots of action, danger, uncertainty, and deadly maneuvers that kept me on my toes while at the same time utterly and completely falling for the characters and swooning over their passion filled, ardent start of a something beautiful and amazing, and hoping they stay alive long enough to enjoy the budding relationship and feelings developing between them... Absolutely fantastic, this is going to be a one klick series for me! ~ Five Spoons
5 Stars to Protected BY Love (Montana Heat 0.5 by Jennifer Ryan
Protected By Loveis interconnected to Jennifer Ryan's Montana Men Series. You don't have to read that series to enjoy this book. Protected By Loveis a standalone.
If you are a fan of romantic suspense, you will love Jennifer Ryan's novels. I certainly do!
Caden and Mia.......
This book was shorter than Jennifer's usual novels. However, being a novella did not make this book lack for anything. Packed with suspense, danger, some violence, Protected By Lovewas a brilliantly written story.
Caden is a DEA agent. His job is dangerous and doesn't leave much time for romance. Unfortunately, danger will follow him into his personal life in this book.
After recent arrests involving a drug dealer, Caden feels like he can finally breath. For once he would like to put his own needs first. Due to unforeseen circumstances and possibly a poor memory, lol, Caden has stood up the woman his aunt has been trying to fix him up with. Not once, but twice Caden stood her up! Mia. Caden has never met Mia but he wants to. He only hopes she will give him a third chance.
Mia definitely does not want to give Caden a third chance. By standing her up twice already, he has painted himself a big unreliable jerk. Unfortunately Mia's aunt along with Caden's aunt, convince her to give him one more chance.
Their date together was actually perfect. Their attraction to each other was instant with strong chemistry as well as protectiveness on both sides. The sparks and sizzle between them could not be denied. I truly believed they were soulmates.
Unfortunately before their first date is even over, danger has taken them captive. What follows is nothing less than horrific and scary circumstances. I will add however, that there were some things that Mia did that made me laugh and in the process, lightened up the angst. I love Mia! She was sassy, witty, loyal, and even fearless. Caden may have been terrified for Mia's safety, because of the circumstances they found themselves in, however he was also impressed with Mia's bravery, quick thinking and determination.
Mia and Caden made an amazing couple. Even knowing they will have a happy ending does not make light of the ordeal they went through together to have it.
This was yet another amazing read by Jennifer Ryan. The next book to come in this series will feature Trigger. He is Caden's brother; also DEA. Some of the unresolved danger from Protected By Lovewill carry over to the next book, Escape To You. In addition, there is even more suspense/danger following the heroine. Just from reading the blurb/teaser we got at the end of Caden's book, I believe Trigger's story is even darker. Sadly we won't have that book until August. Oh what a long wait! So there will be no chance of missing the release, I pre-ordered Escape To You. ;)
My review is honest and unbiased. (Although I admit to having a soft spot for anything written my Jennifer Ryan.)
I read the rest of the series before I came back around to this one (the audio book wasn't available on Hoopla at the time), so not the conventional order.
This was a pretty good romantic suspense novella. It moved really quickly on the love front (expressed within 2 days of a blind date), but I guess after going through all they did, it could possibly be believable (but not really lol). That's the only real issue I had with the book was how quickly they went from 'It's nice to meet you' to 'I love you' that quickly.
The suspense part was pretty good. It does move quickly and had I not already read the rest of the series, all the names would have probably been lost on me.
I loved Mia. She was a total bada** who stared the bad guys down, broke some noses, and didn't take their crap. She seemed more like the DEA agent than Caden. Caden came off a bit soft and not the tough DEA agent you expected. He made some pretty stupid mistakes and didn't watch his six despite knowing a drug dealer may try to retaliate. He was still really sweet and a hottie, but not the most intimidating guy to be in law enforcement.
The story has laughs, danger, suspense, and heartbreak.
This is Mia and Caden’s story. Caden and Mia’s aunts have been trying to get them together for a while but Caden keeps missing their dates because of work. When Mia agrees to one more try with he is happy and decides to go all out. They finally get that date and connect. But danger is out for Caden and is not afraid to hurt Mia to get to him. What happens when the danger comes at them and can hurt them both? Can Caden forgive himself for the danger he brought to Mia? Or is the relationship over before they can get to a second date?
I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
A great story to jump start a brand new series. This is a quick read but it's full of action and romance. Caden and Mia were great together. Now I'm anxiously awaiting for Trigger's story. I highly recommend this one.
This was okay. A quick read. I had already read the book that this is the prequel to and that one was much better. Maybe because this is a novella? It just moved too fast and there wasn't enough development; everything happened too fast.
Protected by love is a spin off of sorts from her Montana Men series. In a previous book in the Montana Men series, one of the heroine's siblings was a drug addict (Sadie and her brother Connor). This spin off focuses on the agents undercover to end the drug operations like Connor's. Right away you are introduced to Beck (aka Trigger) and Caden. They are brothers who work with the DEA to take down drug lords. The story starts right in the middle of a raid so you really are jumping right into the action!
Mia, the heroine, is a chef who has been stood up 3 times by Caden at this point. His job doesn't make dating easy, and he swears he will make it up to her (and his aunt who has arranged the set up!). Once they meet-swoon. I loved the connection between these two. Throw in the danger from the angry drug dealer and you have a fast and sexy romantic suspense to kick off the new series. I mean, they are in mortal peril by the end of their first date! There is a bit of the insta-love, but I think when you share an experience like Mia and Caden do, you are deeply bonded. I loved that Mia was a bad ass. She wasn't like this crazy, trained assassin or anything, but she knows some self defense and she isn't afraid to use it. It was very well written in terms of believability!
Protected by Love is a quick read to get you set up for the rest of the series. Its perfect for a day at the pool or the beach (if you are lucky enough to be by a beach!) and it delivers everything I loved about Jennifer Ryan's books!
And, there is really only 1 sex scene so I deem this book SAFE FOR MY MOM! Hi Mom! I think you will like this one-lots of action and likable characters!
POV: 3rd Tears: no Trope: revenge Triggers: none Series/Standalone: stand alone (introduces you to the upcoming series) Cliffhanger: HEA:

“You have no idea how much I wanted to stay with you. I still do.”
I am always so very happy when I have a Jennifer Ryan book waiting for me on my Kindle. She is one of those writers I've come to depend on, who I know is going to deliver a story that makes my heart soar and my panties melt and my blood pump. Which is why I am also always so very happy whenever I finish a Jennifer Ryan book.
Take Protected by Love. As the prequel novella to Ms. Ryan’s new Montana Heat series, it's a fast-paced introduction (or re-introduction if you remember Caden and Trigger from their brief appearances in other books by this author) to a storyline that is exciting, suspenseful, and sexy.
But it's more than that. It's also a sweetly told love story—one of those swoony reads where the connection is made instantly, the relationship blossoms quickly, but the love feels everlasting. One of my favorite things about Ms. Ryan’s books is that her couples start fast yet remain so strong throughout, it becomes impossible not to root for them. Not only that, but the men and women always seem so equal in all things, which gives balance to the overall story.
All of which is on display here, in the relationship between Caden and Mia. I might have wished for a little more to the ending—I was surprised to see the word Epilogue so soon—but on the whole, this novella was a wild ride, a sexy start and a fantastic foundation for this series and for this relationship. I'm confident that we haven't seen the last of Caden and Mia, that they'll be back in one way or another in the books to come, which makes so very happy—much like the knowledge that Escape to You, Trigger’s book, is already waiting for me on my Kindle…
Their lips touched, and fire shot through him with a swift need that burned and consumed every thought in his head but one: Hold on to her.
This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it, mostly. It was a good drama and a terrific shoot-um-up. I liked Caden and Mia, as well as Trigger/Beck, Aunt Taffy and Aunt Nancy, the two aunts of Caden's and Mia's.
Caden and his brother Beck are DEA Agents and Caden and his date Mia get taken by Marco, who wants Caden to tell him where Beck is so he can kill him. Anyway, Mia is hit on the head with a gun, slashed across the chest with a pair of scissors, slashed down the arm with those same scissors, stabbed in the back with the same scissors and dragged down the street a short ways because she’s running for her life in high-heels. The next day she’s released from the hospital and her and Caden go home and have sex. Seriously? I couldn’t even read the sex part. Not a thought of sex through the entire book then at about 77% they have sex. That’s just stupid and ruined the entire novella. If you’re not going to have any kind of desire or lust or wanting then don’t have sex in your stories. Just sayin’.
Overall, I enjoyed the entire story until the release from the hospital then the sex.
So, description sex, and the F-bomb was used 38 times.
I think I will read at least one other book by this author since the first couple of chapters of Escape to You was at the end of this book and it sounded really good. Between Beck’s emotional problems and Ashley escaping from her captor after a year and ending up with Beck? What’s not to like?
Roughly 98% of this book takes place within the first two days of meeting each other. By the end of the book, it’s been roughly three weeks? And within that timeframe, they’ve had sex, took a spontaneous trip to Hawaii, and threw the word “love” around, AND moved in together??
Let’s back the fuck up real quick.
You’ve got this Mr. Right whose only flaw is not having the time to settle down with someone because of his job. Then walks in Ms. Also Right who owns a restaurant and knows how to kick ass at the same time. How’d they meet? By their lesbian aunts who decided to play matchmaker because nothing feels more country hick than your nephew dating your girlfriend’s niece.
Can I also take a moment to point out if you’re kidnapping someone and you go to frisk them to check for hidden weapons, wouldn’t you also feel for a cell phone? How are you going to completely overlook the common places for a communication device before saying “yep, we’re good, start driving.”? And if you’re in a car the kidnapped can HEAR YOU from where they are, why are we having the guy who knows the directions to the next location in the passenger seat? Dude, quit giving your location away to the DEA agent in the back and TAKE THE WHEEL!
We’re going to *ALMOST* kill the main characters (but not because…storyline) and vaguely mention their PTSD from having witnessed what they did. Sure, fine, the dude’s in the DEA and witnesses that kinda thing on the daily. But the chick? Nope, she’s as sweet as a can of creamed corn (and about as innocent as one too) but we’re going to glaze over her PTSD because that’s not cutesy enough to write about when we need to throw in the one and only sex scene in this book to give the readers what they were really looking for, am I right? Ladies?
This is the part where I’m rolling my eyes and letting out that exasperated groan y’all should be doing too if you feel the same vibes I do on this one.
Anyways, I’m going to start book one and hope it’s better than this was, at least.

A blind date that blossomed into lasting relationship, meddling queer aunts, and a dose of actions involving guns and explosions. That's the gist of what Jennifer Ryan's Protected by Love have in store for the reader.
I hemmed and hawed what to say about this book as it wasn't the better pick I have. Not a total fail, as the female character was quite a kick ass. But boy, the (supposedly) hero was just ...I had issue with him. Big time. For a seemingly seasoned DEA agent, Caden didn't sound that good. Perhaps I should just accept how apt the title is because Mia did seem to run to Caden's rescue. A lot. Not that I dislike a strong female character in a book, but I don't feel like male character compliment her well enough. What I saw here pegged Caden as lax and very unlucky fed.
Romance wise, it was so rushed and instant, even taking into account the adrenaline-fueled experience Mia and Caden went through. That said, I had to give brownie point to Caden for his effort at wooing Mia. The man was thoughtful, I give him that. But in general, I wasn't too impressed with the romance element of the story.
Protected by Love is a prequel to the new Montana Heat series that features federal agents as the heroes of the story. It was told from multiple POVs, and for a novella it's erratic-paced and got quite a busy thread. Personally, this novella wasn't a solid piece and somehow felt more like a stepping stone to the first full novel of the series. Too bad, really. Mia's strong character deserved more than this.
Advanced copy of this book is kindly provided by the author/publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Protected By Love is Jennifer Ryan's introduction to her new series Montana Heat. So far we are introduced to Caden Cooke and his brother Beck Cooke, and I'm sure we will get more guys along the way. Anyway, they work for the DEA. In Jennifer previous serious, we saw some drug problems arise, and the Cooke brothers have been slowly introduce to the Montana area. Now they are get their own stories. First up to get his own story is Caden.
Basically his aunt is trying to fix him up with this girl, Mia Martin. However, work gets in the way. His aunt is like dude get your act together or your going to lose the girl that you never had. Sparks fly, and it goes all down hill from there.
Protected By Love is an insta-love. They are thrown together in a very high stress situation, where they are unsure if they are going to get out. I think the story is more of a jumping point to the series. Caden and Mia get a romance, but we are going to bring in that there is more trouble afoot. We see that something is brewing in Montana and it isn't good. Hey Caden and Mia get a happy ever after. It's a pretty good lead in to the series, and I think that's the best way to look at it. The series does seem promising. I'm curious about Beck's story, because in Protected By Love he's not in a good place. Hopefully he gets his head in the game. Overall, a good intro to the Montana Heat series.
As soon as I read the synopsis for this one I thought it sounded like something that was right up my alley, and boy was I right! I am a sucker for a well written suspenseful romance story that comes equipped with a smooth talking man in uniform and this book definitely had all of that and then some! Agent Caden Cooke wandered onto the page and I was instantly taken with him, he was everything you want in a hero; strong, sexy, and little on the naughty side! Mia and him were definitely a match made in literary heaven, every time they were near one another the sparks were flying and things started to heat up, and I have to say it was quite enjoyable to watch them "dance" around on another, I loved the feisty banter they shared!! This was a great introduction to the Montana Heat series, and I can't wait to return and meet more of Ms. Ryan's sexy new DEA Agents!! Highly recommend this one, it's sure to have you hooked and in love from the first page!!
I voluntarily requested, read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
Quite the start to a new series by Jennifer Ryan. If you’re looking for some fast-paced action with some warm and fuzzy first date feelings thrown in, this is the book for you.
When Mia and Caden finally meet (he stood her up twice!) on their blind date there is instant chemistry. Caden is so sweet without being fake and I can’t blame Mia for forgiving the previous missed dates. For Caden’s part, he’s going to do all that he can to prove to Mia that he’s not a bad guy.
I knew going in that this story was considered a novella so it didn’t surprise me when the action started so early on. What did surprise me was the intensity of that action. Holy moly! There was a lot of tension happening…and it was great!
If the point of this story was to get me interested in the series and excited for Trigger’s story, it worked. I am fully invested in these characters and want to see every one of them get their HEA.
I have always loved Ms Ryan’s books, especially her Montana Men series. Sadly, I was disappointed with this novella and found it just ok. The main characters , Mia and Caden were likable though they weren’t very developed. But I saw potential with the secondary ones, especially Caden’s brother, Beck. Whom by the way, at first I wasn’t sure if he was a “brother in arms” or a blood brother. The plot was somewhat interesting, but it did not hold my attention all through the story . It seemed to fizzle after the first 2/3 of the book. I found certain inconsistencies throughout the book. These I found distracting. All that said, I have a great deal of respect for this talented author, and for that I will give it a 3 star rating, and will likely check out her next book in the series since I found Beck an interesting character. I was gifted this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Caden a DEA agent takes his job seriously and does not make time for romance. His aunt set him up on a blind date with Mia but he stands her up twice work being his main priority. Caden goes on a drug bust but it goes wrong with an innocent being killed and Marco escaping on his way to jail. Caden and Mia finally go on their date. Third time is the charm. They are immediately attracted to each other and have chemistry. But danger lurks its Marco out to get Trigger Caden's brother for revenge for his dead girlfriend Paula.
This book has romance and suspense it's a novella so a short read and gives you a glimpse of what's to come with Trigger's book I read this book in a few hours and enjoyed every page of it. This is definitely a must read for me. The perfect book for a summer read. I already preordered the next book in this series.
A great intro into a other suspense filled, action packed romantic adventure from Jennifer Ryan. I adore her books of rugged men in Montana who all have the hero gene. I equally enjoy how each of these men tend to fall for strong women with minds of their own. In this gem we meet two brothers who work for the DEA. After an undercover op goes bad, one brother misses a blind date for the second time and the other brother spirals into guilt and pain from how the operation ended. Caden hopes that Mia will give him another shot at a date. Fingers crossed, he truly hopes to make it up to her. Little did either party know this date would become the most memorable in history....and not for reasons they may think. This book has tons of suspense, good guys vs bad guys, and romance....it's a great starting point for her new MONTANA HEAT series...I for one look forward to reading more books in this exciting series.
These two are just disgustingly adorable together. This book has so many of the things I like best in romantic suspense: action, drama, intrigue, and lots of steamy heat. Caden’s third chance at a first date with Mia takes a sharp turn into dangerous and possibly deadly territory. Is this the end of the relationship before it even has a chance to begin? Or does the adrenaline fuel a new more permanent connection between the pair. Mia is my favorite kind of heroine. She’s strong, independent, and she keeps her head in a crisis. She’s really pretty kick-butt. Caden’s a little too willing to carry the weight of the world to be completely perfect, but he’s got everything else that makes an awesome book boyfriend: caring, protective, romantic. This story sets the stage for what I think is going to be a very enjoyable series.
This is my first Jennifer Ryan book, but not my last. I adore Mia, she's spunky and funny and everything I love most in a well written h. I loved the suspense and how quickly everything moved in this story, there was never a moment where I was skipping.
I'm off to start reading the rest of this amazing authors work.
There are many reasons why I freaking love romantic suspense, one of which is the fact that the heroines tend to be pretty bad-ass chicks. Gotta say, Mia takes the cake. That girl is a ball buster. Literally. On the flip-side, I fell for Caden from the first page. He's strong and sexy. Yum! I love that this novella not only introduces characters and a villain, it also sets the tone for what I think will be a high velocity series. The action was fast paced. Jennifer did not go easy on the suspense in this one. Although it is a novella, the amount of on-the-edge-moments kept me going. Mix that with the laugh-out-loud moments and you have a fun start to a new series. And I'm hoping it'll be a long one.
My favorite books involve strong characters, believable situations, fun loving secondary characters and villains who pose real threats but aren't so exaggerated that I want to scream in frustration.
This book has all that and more. Do I believe in love at first sight? Probably not. I do believe in finding enjoyment, laughter and common interests on a first date. That gets described so well in this book. So does a woman who learned to protect herself and protect those who have tried to help and protect others. That, too, is a basic part of this story.
DEA agent Caden Cooke has stood up his blind date twice because of his job. Chef Mia Martin is not happy with this blind date that her aunt has been trying to set her up with after being stood up twice. Her aunt and Caden's aunt convince her to give him one more chance.
Once Caden and Mia meet it becomes obvious that it's much more than a blind date. But because of Caden's job the date doesn't end well when their lives are put in jeopardy.
During their ordeal Caden will learn that Mia is a very resourceful, strong woman. You can always count on Jennifer Ryan to give her female characters strong, admirable traits.
This one has so much potential. I was totally ready to believe the love at first sight even though I don't normally. These two really seemed like they had an unusual connection right away and I dug their first date. The banter was great and the. chemistry was awesome. I could even buy the crazy kidnapping and stuff. But then they moved way too fast at the end. The author could have built in a few weeks even of them getting to know each other, recovering from their ordeal. It was too much, too soon and way unbelievable. I was disappointed. I did really love the writing style though and will happily check out the next book in the series.
DEA agent Caden Cooke appeared in the Montana Men series and takes center stage here. His undercover brother Trigger also appears, still working within the Guzman drug gang. He is at the edge of his endurance and Caden takes measures to get him out of a situation where he has been injured. This gives the dealers a clue that they are connected somehow and the gang leader goes after Caden. He is out on a date with a woman he previously stood up twice. After dinner, they are abducted by the gang. Caden is shocked at how well Mia handles herself and their attraction grows. Amazingly, there is an HEA here and a glimpse of what may be awaiting Beck.
