Rate this book
Olivia Wickworth lives in Orphanage Nine, a refuge for the genetically-modified children living in the final days of a dying Earth. In what could be our near future, mankind has completed the widespread implementation of cellular computing - but with devastating unforeseen consequences. Just when all hope seems lost, Olivia enters Aeldyn, a land created thousands of years ago when man exiled magical creatures from Earth. Although Aeldyn seems like the world of Olivia’s dreams, it is not without its own darkness. There is evil in the land that threatens to corrupt Aeldyn just as Earth has been corrupted, and Olivia is the only one who can stop it. On her quest to defeat this evil, Olivia forges friendships, meets fantastic creatures, and rediscovers the lost art of magic. But can she save both Aeldyn and what is left of mankind?

Edward S. Lowell is actually Edward S. Lowell, III. He is also a human that lives on Earth. He is the imaginative (and somewhat insane) individual behind The Last Fairy Tale, his first novel. While his chosen field of study is in computing, writing has always been a passion of his. The first ideas for the story began to form in his mind when he was younger. It wasn't until he took a course in DNA and Molecular Computing while pursuing his degree in computer science that the ideas began to weave themselves into The Last Fairy Tale. The novel is influenced by many different cultures and traditions, as well as his love for video games, music, and the fantasy stories he grew up with.

A fantastic read from a brand new author. I think the The Last Fairy Tale has brought out his talent for writing and I am sure that, like myself, you will want to see more of that talent. The story is fascinating! I personally love The Grimoire and Locke (my two favorite characters). Locke: an imp with a big heart who shows Olivia what true friendship is. And The Grimoire: an ancient human, fallen to a bitter fate all because of his will to carry out a plan that he thought was right. E. S. Lowell really brings out the best and worst aspects of our ways of life. He has an interesting perception of how greed, power, glory, and wealth are mankind's downfall, and how it has (or will) destroyed lives on earth. And how imagination, curiosity, friendship, and love are what we're all forgetting in the midst of our complex and hectic lives. I highly recommend The Last Fairy Tale for anyone looking for that fun action/adventure book with a deeper, more mature underlying meaning.

I am happy to say this has been a very interesting novel. The story line of Olivia’s (a girl) journey to save the magical land of Aeldyn was fascinating and her determination along with her good heart has their lessons of their own. I would recommend The Last Fairy Tale for teens and up. E. S. Lowell has done an exemplary job in his writing and the fire in his imaginations has created such a fantastic fantasy. My favorite characters were Locke and Olivia and I also love root beer.

I just finished this... AND I STILL HAVE CHILLS! There are so many things to talk about, and I have no idea where to start. I loved the story, of course, but what stood out to me as being equally impressive was how it was written and presented to readers. As others have said the characters are great! There isn't one that stands out as being extra; they all feel real and have their own strengths and weaknesses (which is one of the best parts of their journey!). Honestly, anyone from the mid-teen age group and up could read this and enjoy it thoroughly. It is dark at times, but I think that only adds to the already depressing state humanity is in in the book. Olivia is a new hero that I admire. She is courageous, but sensitive and she always thinks of others before herself. The Last Fairy Tale is one those books that will make you think. I hope to see more from E. S. Lowell!

This was a fairly enjoyable read. I'd probably class it as a Middle-Grade book, though the first chunk is maybe a bit darker and more gruesome than one would expect of a Middle-Grade book. It gets a lot more cheerful once the protagonist actually gets into the fantasy world. The fantasy world is somewhat generic, but still fairly interesting. The characters are all pretty good, though there may be too many of them, considering how little most of them contribute to the story. You could take out at least half the companions without it really affecting anything. However, a Middle-Grader is unlikely to notice that problem, and would enjoy the characters, so it's fine. I should also note that I'm generally not fond of anti-progress and anti-technology aesops; they're very common in fantasy, but I always find them to be naive and simplistic.

Despite my criticisms, I did enjoy the book, and I don't regret backing it on Kickstarter. It was pretty good.

I backed this book on Kickstarter, and I'm so glad I did. It's a gorgeous book and the story is lovely. It's probably a little too 'young' for me, I'd say a book for teens, though it does have some dark/gruesome scenes.

There were a lot of characters which I found a bit over the top at times, I'm still not sure why some of them were there :) All in all, good read and I think teens will love it :)

Very descriptive and creative read!

I found myself comparing this book with many different classics from many different genres. The characters were beautifully described, and I found myself smiling often as I compared the creatures with other such animals in other stories. A fairy tale indeed. Including the ending. Great first book.
