To Terran Commowealth pilot Rex Vahl the mission seemed simple: Find out why the tyrannical Europan Empire was interested in the back-water world of Anglesey. But in the Chaos Quarter things never really go smoothly. When Rex discovers a colony of people that are not supposed to exist, he and his crew suddenly find themselves trapped between desperate people who deserve freedom, and an autocratic superpower hell-bent on destroying it, by any means necessary. Making things worse is the fact that his gunner, a former Europan himself, is on the colony’s hit list. And a bounty huntress with mind-altering synthetic pheromones may also be after them, for her own twisted reasons. Yep, it’s just that kind of day…Faced with such insurmountable odds, Rex and his crew face a daunting choice: Either have to find some way to resist the juggernaut headed their way, or end up the latest victims of a dark nation’s imperial ambitions…

Mediocre Space Action-Adventure Buried By Poor Editing/Proofreading
The "Chaos Quarter: Imperial Ambitions (The Chaos Quarter, Book 2)," authored by Mr. David Welch, continues the space adventures of a crew of intel agents, as they travel through an unincorporated sector of the galaxy: the Chaos Quarter. This installment is a mediocre action-oriented romp, which barely survives the inexcusably poor editing and proofreading.
The engaging and eclectic three (3) person crew of a Commonwealth armed merchantman, commanded by Rex Vahl, are dispatched by the External Intelligence Division (EID), to investigate the activities of the Europan (sic) Empire, about a seemingly backwater world. While gathering intel, Rex and his crew run afoul of a ruthless, female pirate/bounty hunter leader, whose unique, genetically enhanced, bio-physical assets (not as obvious as you might be thinking), allow her to enslave males. A bit further in, the reasons for the Commonwealth's enemy's interest in this part of the Chaos Quarter are discovered, and credulity-stretching mayhem ensues.
Mr. Welch, has created some engaging, and interesting characters, to form the Commonwealth intel crew: Rex, a Fleet Lieutenant, "permanently" temporarily-detached to EID; Lucius, the runaway aristocratic warrior from the Europan Empire; Second, the beautiful genetic construct, who is learning to be a human; and Jake, the exiled cyborg. Most of the other characters are in the main, one-dimensional and fleeting. The story and plot lines are geared as a low-brow, pulp action romp, mediocre at best. If a reader doesn't "look too closely" while reading, it can be entertaining. However, the dismal failure of both editing and proofreading, cause the dropping to a 2-star rating. Time after time in the writing, errors occur, either breaking story continuity and/or cohesion. Additionally, the author's abusive use of certain words, such as "but," and the most atrocious overuse of "smirk," are inexcusable. There is an editing firm listed by the author in his end-of-book acknowledgements. What this firm was payed for is unknown. In Mr. Welch's, Book 1 of the series, these issues were not present. Examples for both are listed in the Goodreads Highlights and Notes by this reviewer.
The "Chaos Quarter: Imperial Ambitions," is narrowly recommended and was fully read via Kindle Unlimited.
This second book really gets into the nuts and bolts of the Mindset of Lucious' people and it's an eerie reminder of slavery in our own history. But the real delight of this book was Second coming to grips with having free will and dealing with stuff that most people handle without much thought.
With the kinda depressing mindset of the Empire and the near mindless slaughter to save the free serfs from being returned to the Empire's oppression, Second provided some much needed relief.
A lot of space operas tend to shy away from sexual things... but this book - as in the first - doesn't shy away from it one bit. This was an exciting read... now on to book three!
When you are a vet this series resonates with you, and not because it is sci-fi but because it feels like the author understands how we view the world its not duty to country its about stepping up to help when no one expect you to do anything.
Extremely violent and intense, but in an uplifting way.
Do read this book, people. Escaped slaves have to fight off their former masters, because the former masters cannot tolerate even the idea of these "subhuman vermin" threatening their entire society by their very free existence. Our Heroes from the first volume of _Chaos Quarter_ fly to the rescue. The story, action , and character development continues to evolve. I have grown to love these characters and wish to read more of their adventures!
Another adventure by the intrepid crew from the Chaos Quarter. This time they are investigating the activities of the Europan Empire in the Chaos Quarter, uncovering more of the life of Lucius prior to his rebellion from the perverted values of the Empire. His story is somewhat more predictable than it's predecessor but still enjoyable. The further development of some of the characters make this a worthwhile addition to the series.
Good adventure story with some mildly amusing sexual situations. Action sequences are well written and keep the reader's attention. Book could have benefited from a more serious proof reading for spelling and grammar.
2nd in Series, meaty, read it in 2 days, typical space opera, action, good dialogue, interesting characters, engaging storyline, had a few laugh out loud moments, if you like the genre this is a good read I enjoyed it and will look forward to future instalments.
Awesome scifi series, i really, really wish it continues
The second book in the series is just as great as the first. I really, really wish he continues it. Plot, characters (especially characters) and world setup are all stellar. Please write more!!
Good book. Red and team rise to the rescue of serfs who fled the evil empire of Europa. Lucius runs into his nanny. Second and Jake are along for the ride.
