Carson is an undercover federal agent tasked with undoing exactly the kind of end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it catastrophe that brought America down in Get Out of Denver. Cut off from all support and unsure of who he can trust, he still has a mission to complete. But as layer after layer of the conspiracy unfolds around him, he has to cut through the lies and threats to find the truth about who took down the power grid, what their agenda is now, and what he can do to stop it.
Book Three in the Denver Burning series shows the social meltdown in Denver from another angle. McLean and Carrie walked away from it all in Book One. Now another man must walk back into it and face the disaster head-on.
Very interesting segment in this series. Not quite as much high tension but some interesting information that may help reveal the true cause of the disaster that shit down the country.
It started fine with Carson trying to escape the city to his designated safe house to wait a specific time before continuing his mission. He is part of a covert Homeland Security force designed to fight back in apocalypse scenarios. I liked him and the opening chapters where he is trying to escape, then fearing attack at his isolated safe house.
But after that it all fell apart. Carson puts his entire mission at risk to give away his transport and supplies to a woman who was part of a group trying to rob him. A highly trained operative would NOT risk the mission for a few strangers so I found this totally dumb and realistic. Carson also tells us about the man obsessed neighbour he had-Dana. He is scathing about her being irritating, persistant and lusting after him constantly yet he is happy again to risk the mission to pander to her whining. What is it with women in this series? Next up we meet the bitch that is Agent Scala who I despised as much as Dana. It was at this point that I decided the book and series were over for me.
I am enjoying the series. I started by reading the freebie on ohfb.com and bought the others as I got to them. I am still having trouble downloading 1.5 though. My main thing is why the peppers love to read yet no cabins have been stocked with a few books. Winters are cold and actually having something to keep your mind engaged is a necessity. Even if they are books on farming or medical care in case something happens to a party member.
Thank you for writing the type of post-apoc dystopian I have been looking for! No zombies and full of practicalities that we would face post emp. You have a new fan and I hope you revisit the original characters in future books.
These three books have been very good reads. Mr. Dennison has captured my imagination and kept me turning pages. I'm looking to reading book four when the price goes down.
