While not your typical feel good Christmas story, this is my favorite this year. The very talented Feehan has produced another captivating tale and offers readers a sexy romance that includes a little suspense and mystery along with one of my favorite types of hero.

... "Tall, lethal, a man who worked hard to stay in shape, to train himself to be the weapon he'd become." .... "A devil in blue jeans and sin in his heated gaze."

Cole Steele is a man haunted by his past. Although damaged from a childhood filled with unspeakable horror, he's managed to survive by closing off his emotions, especially love and affection. However, he now finds himself the guardian of a fourteen year old half brother, Jase, who's also suffered the same abuse from the hands of their sadistic father.

CF also offers a very likable, smart heroine in veterinarian, Maia Armstrong. Thinking her unusual talents are more a hindrance than gift, she keeps moving from town to town while all she really longs for is a home, roots, and a sense of belonging. And while her affinity with animals is a gift, she's also a clever lady who can easily spot a man on the prowl for a one night stand....

... "A man like Cole Steele left fingerprints on a woman, took away her soul, and never returned it to her. Once he left burn marks - and he would - they would never fade." .... "He looked at her with dark desire. With hunger. With possession and determination."

I enjoyed every minute of this romance, from beginning to the fantastic epilogue at the end. The author manages to pack a lot of emotion into these 240 pages, making it believable and one of my favorite Christmas reads.

Rocky Mountain Miracle is a standlone by Christine Feehan. This is a story about healing and finding love in the Christmas season. The setup of the story is that the hero, Cole Steele, his father was murdered, and he was left his estate and his younger brother. Both Cole and his brother were both abused by their father, and while they are both innocent, they are still working on trying to live a normal life. Then Cole meets a young woman at a bar, who is different from anyone else that he has ever met before. Our heroine, Maia, is a Vet but also has the ability to speak to animals. I really just love these two together. There is such great family bonds in this one. There is a bit of a mystery. There is some animal abuse, so keep that in mind going into this one here. I really enjoyed the Christmas aspects and especially in seeing them find the magic of Christmas especially as both males just need that feminine influence. The romance itself is a bit lacking in this one, I just couldn't seem to connect to this one.

Overall I found Rocky Mountain Miracle to be an enjoyable read, and while not my favorite Feehan, it was a fascinating one and I would have loved to see the brother get a book.

This is not your typical feel good Christmas romance. Cole and his younger brother Jase have both survived the abuse and tyranny of their now deceased father at a great cost to them both. Their new and tenuous relationship is quickly tested when things begin to happen on the ranch that gives Cole and Jase reason to question each other's motives. Facing a new threat Cole and Jase have to learn to trust one another in a way that neither has ever been able to manage with anyone before. Cole being the oldest has taken on the responsibility of raising his fourteen year old brother while still combating the demons that linger even after their father's murder. Returning to the home that holds so many nightmares for him has not been easy, but Cole is determined to try to give Jase a better life than he had growing up.

The Christmas season is not an easy time of year for either Steele brother and with a new threat emerging they will need all of the help that they can get. Making new and positive memories together is something that Cole is determined to give to his younger brother. After an incident that brings them into immediate and close contact with Maia, the local traveling veterinarian, the Steele brothers are set on the path to healing and moving forward with their new lives. Maia is a veterinarian with a special gift that makes her the perfect person to help Cole and Jase come to appreciate the strength and support that they can find with each other.

This is a quick and a bit disturbing Christmas read. However, if you are looking for a Christmas story that's a bit darker and different from the traditional Christmas romances with a slight paranormal twist Rocky Mountain Miracle will fit the bill.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN MIRACLE is rather dark for a Christmas romance, but I loved that it packed such an emotional wallop. Cole Steele and his 14-year old brother, Jace, suffered years of abuse by their cruel father, but it comes to an end when he is murdered. Now Cole has custody, but the two brothers are left struggling to cope with some heavy emotional scars.

Enter Maia, a traveling veterinarian with a supernatural gift for communicating with animals. She comes to the Steele’s ranch to save an injured horse, but a blizzard hits, and she ends up stranded there over Christmas. Maia quickly realizes that it’s Cole and Jace that need saving from their dead father’s hold.

This was a quick read that easily pulled me in. Cole and Maia seemed an unlikely couple at first, with Cole’s caveman tendencies and Maia’s solitary ways, but things heated up between them nicely. I also enjoyed the mystery surrounding the father’s death and some recent unexplained happenings on the ranch. Their being trapped on a remote ranch in a blizzard added to the suspense.

The ending made me teary-eyed, but in a good way. Though the characters suffered much tragedy in their lives, the ending is hopeful. Definitely a different kind of Christmas romance. 4.5 stars!

Maia, a vet, is rumoured to have a magical effect on the animals she treats. Does that magic spread to the two brothers who run their late father’s ranch . He was a terrible father and Cole is hoping to provide a better life and make happy memories for his younger half brother when he learns about his existence.

The obligatory snow storm leaves Maia stranded at the ranch- will the love bug spread it’s wings over them?

With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book.

"Rocky Mountain Miracle" by Christine Feehan

Book Description....

"No Christmas will ever be the same after Cole and Maia meet on a snowy western ranch… Find out why in #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan’s romantic holiday e-novella!

When Cole Steele, a womanizer rumored to have killed his father, meets Maia Armstrong, a veterinarian rumored to practice magic, the sizzling romance could melt all the snow on his Wyoming ranch. And when an injured horse brings them together, Cole can’t help but believe that Maia casts spells on animals—and men. What else could explain the burning passion he feels for her and the thawing of his heart just in time for Christmas?"

What I liked about the novel....

This was one of those stories that once you start reading you will find it hard to put down. I found the story one that was rather a sad one but I will say it did have some lightness that would put a smile on your face as you are reading through the read. Yes, it was a romance but there was a lots more to this storyline. The author did a amazing job as she brings to life this story of Cole, his brother Jase and then there will be a healer in the form of a traveling veterinarian named Maia. We find from the read that the Steele brothers were in the need of much healing for these two guys. Why was that? Then here comes a lady with some very special gifts that will greatly help the two Steele brothers. In the end ... well this is where I will say I don't want to spoil it because I want you to pick up this good read to see for yourself how well this author brings it all out to the reader.

This was definitely one of those reads that wasn't all a happy read. I did find it rough at times but as the read flows the reader will be ale to see just what all this author had in mind for the reader to be able to understand about life bringing out their lows, strengths as well as there support for each other. This read will include a paranormal (pet psychic) that was brought into the read that I found quite interesting and it was done so well in the flow of the read. Now, I want the reader to be aware that there will be child abuse issues that will be a very sensitive subject addressed. Also, there will be mysteries going on at this ranch that will have you guessing or trying to guess who was doing this? Yes, there is some hot steamy sex between....well I will let you read it for yourself to find out in the end all of the mysteries and seeing if there will be a happy ever after. Be ready for a little of it all...abuse, sorrow, hate, mysteries, twists, emotions, paranormal, humor, romance, and yes....in the end a new life for all. Would I recommend "Rocky Mountain Miracle?" YES!

Cole Steele is a man who ran from his past only to have it catch back up with him. His horrific father has died leaving him his 1/2 brother to raise. Unaware that he ever had another sibling, there are now two tortured souls.

Maia Armstrong is a traveling vet with a special talent to heal wounded animals. When Cole and his brother, Jace, are thrust into her life she discovers a bond that can't be broken.

The romance is slow building and heartfelt but still contained that steamin' edge.

While reading this story, I knew I read it before. This story was previously released in 2004 as an anthology called The Shadows of Christmas Past. That said, it was worth the re-read.

This is a sweet and endearing story about recovering and moving on from ones tragic past. It is a wonderful Christmas time story with a slight paranormal twist!

It's been like a month and a half since I've read my last Christine Feehan book, and naturally, I needed a fix. So when I saw this book and that it was about Christmas, I knew I had to pick it up. It was emotional due to Cole and his brother Jase's past, with their awful and abusive father. Maia, the heroine, was an amazing veterinarian, who could see images sent to her by animals. She couldn't stand to see anyone or any animal suffer, and that compassionate nature came in handy around Cole and Jase. They hated Christmas because it's when their dad was at his most abusive and meanSpirited, but Maia showed them how great it could be. Cole was mysterious, a bit alpha(of course), but also very vulnerable. His job kept him busy, but when his father was murdered and he became guardian of the brother he never knew about, he returned to the home he had escaped from to care for him and to give Jase a sense of family. I loved Jase. I felt awful for him, but he was so smart and playful at times, and I just wanted the best for him.

There was action in this story to go along with all the emotion. Someone injured Jase's horse, which brought Maia out to the ranch. As their were really bad snowstorms, Maia was forced to stay with them. While all the romance and brotherly bonding was going on, someone was causing injuries to Maia and other animals, as well as watching them.

This was a really good book. I felt so awful for Jase and Cole. Watching them grow to trust one another was amazing. I loved watching Maia become more comfortable with them knowing about her being able to see images from animals, and she was great at getting the two brothers to become closer and to make their own memories at the ranch where they had both been through so much. If you don't mind reading about some very heavy topics concerning child abuse and some off-page violence to animals, check this out. I don't think you'll be sorry.

This is a short story set at christmas but surprisingly featuring a family who totally despise the festive season and all it entails . Cole Steele had a sadistic and cruel father who did all he could to make those around him suffer. Cole learnt that love is never going to come his way and it's far better to close off your emotions and not allow anyone to hurt you. He escaped his fathers ranch and joined the military and now years later he works undercover for the Drug Enforcement Agency but the recent unexplained murder of his father has finally brought him home . What Cole didn't expect to find was a younger brother who he never knew existed and even worse he realises that Jase was equally abused by their father. Two tortured souls, unsure if they can trust each other but both united in their opinion that Christmas has no place in their lives.
Maia is a vetarenerian who has an uncanny gift for communicating with the animals she treats. She has always moved around as she doesn't want her clients to freak out and has experience of just how ignorant some people can be. Now if only she could convince the dangerously attractive Cole Steele that she's not interested maybe her life could keep going smoothly. Cole sees a woman that draws him in like no other and he has no intention of not taking a big juicy bite of Maia but she's a wily one and keeps trying to avoid him. When a horse is badly injured at the ranch Maia goes with Cole to help but a truly awful snowstorm sees her trapped there with the two brothers. These guys may not believe in the magic of Christmas but Maia does and she's determined to share a little of the festive spirit whilst she is there. What none of them expected though was an uneasy presence stalking them and their trials have only just begun!
Although there is a slight paranormal feel to this book it's more of a romantic suspense really and it's quite a heartwarming story that just kind of creeps up on the reader. I knew going in that it would be romantic and possibly even a little cheesy but it's a relationship between the brothers and heroine that just builds up and felt quite believable. Both Cole and Maia have gone through life as loners really and even though Maia has a warm giving spirit she has never really found love. As this is by Ms Feehan when this couple finally do connect it's a smouldering read with enough heat to satisfy most readers. What works exceptionally well here is the burgeoning relationship between the two brothers as they learn to trust each other and Maia becomes a bridge between them that leaves me with a warm feeling.
There's a mystery to solve and enough suspense and intruige to keep the reader guessing as to what the outcome will be. These characters are survivors and yet they still have so much more to conquer. Their lives have been unbearably tragic and yet this tale brings hope and love. A great little read at this time of year and as usual Ms Feehan delivers something magical!

A lady Veterinarian with a touch of Dr. Doolittle magic finds one beast she cannot read, Cole Steele. The man is pure trouble, rumored to be an ex-con, his father’s murderer and out to kill his half-brother, Cole’s best feature seems to be his ability to add most of the women in town to his list of one night stands. When Maia comes to town, Cole is in serious trouble, has he lost his touch with the ladies? How does this feisty woman resist his charms so easily? Or is she?

Trouble on the ranch brings Cole and Maia running as her services are needed, and a major snow storm keeps her there until after Christmas. What Maia does is turn the chaotic world of Cole and his half-brother, Jace upside down and inside out as she forces them to look at their pasts in order to build a new future. Meanwhile, someone is threatening lives at the ranch and there must be a huge reason why. Will the spirit of the season find love growing on the ranch or will evil overshadow the joy of the season?

As much suspense as romance, as well as a tale of hideous pasts that have damaged two wonderful people, Rocky Mountain Miracle by Christine Feehan has combined the magic of the season with a chilling tale of abuse and treachery.

Ms. Feehan has created a tale that will pull at your heart as you are balanced on the edge of your seat as the tension and mystery grows. Well-matched characters, great animals, a lot of snow and darks secrets! All wrapped up for the Holidays!

I have had few experiences with Christine Feehan's writing myself.  But I was feeling the holiday spirit and wanted to jump in on a holiday story.  So this seemed to fit that bill when I looked at it.  It started out great, with a sexy and very alpha, tortured hero.  And tough chick that seemed to be drawing that alpha to her like honey to a bee. The sexual chemistry was sizzling and I was immediately hooked.

Then it all sort fell apart.  It got boring and dragged out.  Just when I thought the suspense would kick up a notch, it didn't.  When the sexy would start kicking in, it didn't.  I might've officially gotten "non-existent" blue balls from this book!

I don't think the dark subject matter revealed in the beginning and throughout the story, about the abuse Cole and his brother went through, was addressed or explored properly.  They all just seemed perfectly fine.  Maia was a bit of a superwoman.  She's a drummer for the band at a bar, she's a traveling vet, she "speaks" to animals, she's a super cook and can make pizza from scratch.  She seems to be able to do it all.  So when I first really liked her character, as the story progressed she went a little out of character for what I had in mind.

Now I remember how I felt with the last book I read by this author.  She starts out really strong and gains my interest immediately, but I think she misses the mark on capitalizing on where the story could go.  Things become simple and dragged out.  Slows down the pace.  And loses my interest.  In this case, ROCKY MOUNTAIN MIRACLE turned into a sweet story that got bugged down by some crazy and far fetched ending and a too fast I Love You.  Just goes to show you that just throwing in a twist in a story doesn't make it good.

Rumors of Cole’s exploits are vastly over dramatized. He left town vowing to never come back to his own personal hell, but after his father’s death he becomes the guardian to his young brother and rather than taking him to an unfamiliar place he decides to face his nightmares and return to his childhood home. When he meets Maia he is instantly attracted to her and wants her but is supposed womanizing ways get in the way of winning her over, when he has a legitimate reason to invite her to his ranch, he jumps all over it. Next thing you know they are snowed in and Maia is now the welcome guest at his ranch indefinitely.

This was a pretty quick, decent read. It didn’t wow me but that’s hard to do with a novella. I liked all of the characters; Maia didn’t take Cole’s shit and did a lot for his young brother. Her healing ways with animals transfers to this young man, making his life just a bit easier for him. Cole was super protective of his young brother which was very endearing. He faced his own nightmares so that he could attempt to give his brother a slice of normalcy, not many are willing to do that. While they are trapped on the ranch during the storm the answer to Cole’s father’s death may be answered and along with it, some extreme danger. They are all caught on a ranch in the middle of winter during a storm when the bullets start flying.

This is a story that is made by Jase and Maia. Cole is basically your misunderstood, broody, and very rich hunk hiding a very wounded "golden heart".

Maia, on the other hand, is a woman with a wonderful gift. The ability to communicate with animals.
Young Jase, is also a very empathic character in hi own right.

On to the story...

The story starts off a little rough.
There is a bit of "me Tarzan...you Jane" type possessive insta-love going on with Cole...ugh!
But not to worry.
Nefarious happenings at the farm involving Jase's favorite horse, soon divert attentions away from Cole's borderline stalking and back to the drama at hand.

Things really start to pick up plot-wise when Maia finds herself snowed in at the ranch, and as such, a front row spectator to the behind the scenes pain of the Steele brothers.
More is revealed to her by Jase's beloved horse and hearts (both Maia's and those of readers melt)
There is also a mystery afoot concerning the horse's injuries and other strange and dangerous happenings around the ranch.

This is a wonderful story that blooms before readers' eyes.
The characters are well rounded and they develop and grow more detailed as the story progresses.
The thing that makes the story however, are the unexpected twists in the plot.

This is a wonderful Christmas read that is sure to warm your heart.

Horrors of their abusive pasts at the hands of their father torment Cole and Jase Steele. Even after his death as Christmas approaches and they struggle to become a family. Cole, a man struggling to face his past so his half brother can conquer his and have a life.

Both not strong in trust, bond over their broken lives. And the laughter and light of Maia, someone to give them perspective on facing their demons and pointing out the good in them. Helping to cast out the ghosts and reclaim their lives. Find their Christmas. Maia aching for them wanting to heal...to give them what they need. But afraid she won't be accepted by them. But confident in who she is. Her affinity for animals. Her strength demonstrated wonderfully in the story. The perfect catalyst for the Steele brothers.
Beautifully written story of 3 people who want acceptance and understanding and find it with each other!

All built while unraveling the mysterious occurances, more truths about their father, about each other...grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity written to perfection!

I've been curious about this author's work for a long time now and having finally decided to give her work a chance I went into it with somewhat high expectations. Let's just say that I gave this book a chance but it was not for me, sadly.

I didn't like the characters at all, I really hoped they would do something to make me like them but they did not. It also seemed very over the top and dramatic in terms of the plot and the direction the story was headed in, in my opinion.

Also, at the point at which I stopped reading I felt as if the story had made no major developments and the plot line was stilted. It had dragged on for more than half the book and still I held on. But I still gave it my best as the writing wasn't too bad.

As for whether I'd pick up another book by this author? Well, I think I'll be putting her stuff on hold for awhile.

I didn't think the romance was the highlight to this book. Instead it was the relationship of two broken brothers, Cole and Jace, who really needed to learn to trust each other, to learn what family means. In the beginning you could tell that both yearned to trust the other, that maybe, just maybe there would finally be someone on their side. It wasn't smooth sailing for them and honestly Maia seemed to help things along, knowing what each brother needed.

I loved Maia's affinity for animals and how she cultivated that in Jace. He needed to have something like that in his life. While I did enjoy the romance between Maia and Cole it was just ok.

I did love the epilogue, loved the fast forward a few years to see where everyone was.

I first read this story in The Shadows of Christmas Past (Christmas Series, #3) (Primes #2.5) and I rated it a 3 *, after a re-read I still haven't changed my mind about this book.

The story was enjoyable and it certainly does capture your attention. All the characters in the book are enjoyable, but it does feel as if something was missing in the story.

I would have liked a little bit more suspense to this story involving the activities with Fred and more drama and maybe more secondary characters. I know they where isolated due to the storm and the location of the farm but we didn't get to "meet"Al or his wife or any of the ranch hands. A little more substance to this story and it would have rated higher.

Other than this , this was a good, easy, enjoyable book.

Again we have the tormented man who is saved by the empathetic vet woman, but the story is well written, the brother is a great character and the plot, as far as possible, is congruent. Not the best Feehan's book, but a proper Christmas story.

Cute story. It was a really fast read. I was sorta thinking it was a novella at first with the way i was blasting through it. It did touch on some child abuse, so if your a little sensitive this might not be for you. I did enjoy the pet psychic thing about Maia, it was kind of a cool little add in. I felt so bad for Jase & Cole, but was so happy that this book had a happy ending for all. I was sort of worried it was going to end on a cliffy at first, but then it sorted itself out. All in all a nice story

Rocky Mountain Miracle is a unique holiday novella with a more mysterious tone with two tortured souls, half-brothers Cole and Jase, in need of mind-body-soul healing. Protagonist Cole Steele and Maia Armstrong could not have been more polar opposites, he own a ranch and she is a traveling, empathetic vet. Yet their connection works beautifully with a lovely ending.

My first contemporary from Christine Feehan and I liked it. Cole has come back to care for Jase, the 14-year-old brother he didn't know he had, since he left his father's home as soon as he was old enough and never looked back. But knowing the kind of childhood he had, Cole understands what Jase experienced under their father's abusive reign and is determined to see Jase end up with a normal life, unlike his own. But it looks like someone isn't done trying to hurt them, as multiple accidents keep happening around the ranch, including an injured horse. This brings Maia, a psychic veterinarian and the woman whom Cole has been obsessed with for the past week. She gets snowed in on the ranch and Maia's open and accepting attitude begin the healing process with Cold and Jase. She helps them reclaim the house and reclaim Christmas. The longer she's with them, the more certain Cole is that he cannot let her go.

I found this really enjoyable. It's by no means perfect - you've got Maia who is a bit too perfect (she knows exactly what to say in each situation and everything she says and does make everybody happy...she's perfection personified, but she's still very likeable). You've got Cole making speculation that is 100% accurate and with way too much detail to be just speculation. It was like guessing the correct character, weapon and location in Clue without even starting the game. The suspense was okay, but it paled in comparison to the romance and family aspect of this story. That's where the strength is. Maia is able to get Cole and Jase to open up and to begin connecting as a family. She and Cole have a spectacularly enjoyable relationship - I loved reading about it. They grow closer as friends, the chemistry sparks and they become lovers and it all settles into deep love as Cole knows he doesn't want to live without her. And her complete acceptance of the things he needs to do to deal with his demons was awesome. She was a strong heroine who was able to let Cole go without making him feel guilty for what he needed to do. It just all around made me feel good.

I love Christine Feehan. I've read quite a few of her books, but this was a disaster. It felt like it was written in a rush and things were repeated often. The little brother confesses to thinking Cole was the one causing trouble around the ranch and trying to kill him. MULTIPLE times! Why are you making this confession again!? We already know you thought that! And it wasn't just his confession, Maia did it a few times too. Admitting things about her gift she had already admitted. Just complete inconsistency throughout the entire book. Weird sentences that should have been caught by an editor. And dear lord the information dumps! Maia is a vet and every time she talked about an animal it was like reading the Wikipedia page on said animal. Just projectile vomiting facts about animals. We get it. You're knowledgeable about animals. And now I know that mountain lions veins are sometimes hard to find, but that's okay! Because they can absorb the fluids under their skin! If you ever find a dehydrated mountain lion you can just shoot the fluids under the skin! Hey! The more you know! Except not!! That's enough. No more please!!! I just don't care that much! And then she would walk you through the medical procedure too!!! I now know all the drugs I need and techniques I should use for horse and exotic cat injuries, heck, I should just go take my vet exam now and I'm sure I would pass!
The plot was poorly constructed, none of it felt like it had been planned out. It felt like she just decided halfway through the book OH! He should work for the DEA! And then, even though nothing AT ALL points to drug trafficking we're going to make THAT be what all this is about! And let's give this character asthma all of a sudden for no damn reason!
It's just a disaster! How did this even happen!?
Rocky Mountain Miracle.
It's a miracle I didn't throw my phone while reading this shit.

This book was an unexpected surprise. I have read Christine Feehan books for a couple of years, and her series are always interesting to read, but every now and then you find a hidden treasure that she wrote in between the series. This is one of those books, well written and full of intrigue and really about the interaction of the characters. Cole and Jase are half brothers now reunited after the death of their abusive father. They don't trust anyone even themselves but then Maia Armstrong defends Cole from the local gossip makers, and their lives begin to take all sort if twists and turns.

This was a quick read, at 240 pages the story just flows through the pages and when you least expect it you are done. That is the type of book a reader can and should enjoy as much as possible.

A simple, easy, feel-good romance with a touch of action.

This is typical of Feehan's writing and fans will no doubt enjoy the ride. The story is short and to the point and there is very little depth or complexity when it comes to the plot. The relationship between the main characters and the final conclusion are both extremely predictable. The end is somewhat satisfying.

'Rocky Mountain Miracle' is a bit trite / cliched but it is still a nice enough story. It's a bit like those 'made for television' Christmas movies where we all know how it will end but enjoy watching all the same.
