Second Chance

Rate this book
When the furman colonists set down on a distant world to pave the way for later human inhabitants, not all is as idyllic as it appears. The indigenous life forms may not be mere simple animals thought to be harvested for food, and other uncertain dangers will force the Furs to more primitive measures, even as a decade-old mystery is in the backs of their minds. The amount of colonists was few to begin with, but the numbers could be getting smaller.

Definitely an improvement on the previous two books (I believe "Second Chance" is the third one, despite the cover art showing the roman numerals "II"). The story is well written but I have some issues...

The preparations for the colonization mission were laughable. A 15 kilometer hike is doable in 4-5 hours, perhaps less, and shouldn't be a two-day walk. Plus, nobody participating in the training had heavy backpacks. Hell, it didn't even rain overnight, the lucky bastards. I speak from experience. Lots of it. This oversight made me cringe a slight bit, but I shrugged it off as I surmised that the author may not have had any previous experience with such an endeavor. This lack of realism irritated me. It still does.

Not only were the preparations and training a little shallow but their supplies and access to essential forms of technology during their actual mission on "Bonestelle" was a logistical nightmare. No GPS, no weather tracking systems, only a single satellite overhead with a singular purpose to communicate with earth... Pitiful.

It's almost as though the AHCP set up their colonies to fail, which makes the story nonsensical. Is the AHCP good or bad? The author never really goes in depth on that side of the story and leaves an awkward feeling in my temple. Literally. NASA doesn't overlook a single detail, and if they do, there is a high probability that their astronauts will die as a result. Unfortunately, the AHCP is a junior organization with little experience and I wonder what would have happened if the author had chosen to use NASA, a much more experienced and heavily funded group, as the main organization leading the program.

Also, people should be psychologically evaluated before joining for obvious reasons. Rape and/or sexual assault wasn't treated properly in the story and it confused me. Why would the author create a system that retains such predatory personalities and only gives them a slap on the hands (or shaves their tail fur), despite the danger they pose to other candidates? I couldn't stand for that stuff, but I'm glad the f***er died after his second attempt. Pardon the curse. I'm questioning what message Ted wanted to convey to his audience with the various stalking and rape attempts... The AHCP doesn't care about their volunteers? Or perhaps its deeper than that... Because rape isn't a joke, but Ted was like "whatever."

If that's the message your readers are receiving, that is NOT a good sign.

I see many wasted opportunities, but despite my negative narrative on this book, it didn't keep me from reading it, which I found surprising. I still have hope for Ted, and hopefully, he gets something out of this (if he even reads this, that is).

2.75/5

The rapist wasn't properly dealt with and other problems dug a pretty deep hole for this story. It was an okay read, but not among Ted's best.

A certain improvement on the first, Second Chance seemed more cohesive as a story compared to Sunset. It still had some of the flaws of the original, especially given the large cast of characters we needed to get to know.
I think there was at times a like of driving plot behind the story, but it was interesting getting to know this new world.
