When a beautiful Welsh loyalist is taken prisoner by her English enemy, she must make an impossible choice between loyalty and love
Forced to live under the yoke of the hated English, Rhonwen ap Tomas feels like a rabbit caught in a snare. When she catches sight of the devilishly handsome English knight whose life she once saved, her only desire is to kill him. But her arrow misses its mark and Jasper FitzHugh vows that although they are enemies now, one day they will be lovers.
For ten years, Jasper fought in the long shadow of his warrior brother, Rand, who claimed this remote corner of northern Wales for England and crowned himself lord of Rosecliffe Castle. Now Jasper must safeguard Rand’s wife and children and find a way to soothe the restlessness in his soul. His near-fatal encounter with the wild creature from his childhood—now a ravishing beauty bent on avenging her Welsh brethren—only fuels his hunger to possess her.
When circumstances and a dangerous enemy conspire to make Rhonwen Jasper’s prisoner, passion flares hotly between captive and captor, drawing them to a destiny neither could ever have imagined.
The Knight of Rosecliffe is the 2nd book in the Rosecliffe Trilogy, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
Rexanne Becnel is the author of more than twenty historical romance and contemporary mainstream novels, many of which appeared on the USA Today bestseller list. With the publication of her first novel, My Gallant Enemy, Becnel won the Waldenbooks Award for Best First-Time Romance Author and the Romantic Times Award for Best Medieval Romance by a New Author. While growing up, Becnel lived for a time in Germany and England, where she became fascinated by medieval history. After studying architecture at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, she worked as a building inspector for the Vieux Carré Commission, the agency of the City of New Orleans charged with protecting and preserving the distinct architectural and historic character of the French Quarter. Becnel lives in New Orleans with her husband and two children.
THIS ONE WASNT AS GREAT OR BETTER THAN THE FIRST BOOK.
Unfortunately I wasn't invested in Jasper or Rhonwen. Jasper we hardly knew from the first book except he was a victim, while Rhonwen we were introduced to her earlier as a child and know how much she despises the English. Her hatred makes me cringe.
OUR HERO is the brother of Rand, and apart from his whoring ways before I dont know much about him but from reading BECNEL books, you can decipher what kind of a hero he is. He was immediately attracted to the fair Rhonwen, and throughout the book, circumstances occur that is no different from the first book. What I dislike about him was how he comes to his own conclusion about situations too fast without even going to the source of it for confirmation, typical BECNEL hero. In terms of expressing himself, I think he is more honest with his feelings.
OUR HEROINE is a pain in the ass. As i mentioned before BECNEL Heroines have a way of grating on your nerves for their infuriating temper and obstinacy. There is a fine line between those characteristics that makes them either POSITIVELY STRONG AND ADMIRABLE or ANNOYINGLY BITCHY AND A HYPOCRITE. Rhonwen falls into the latter. She will fight him tooth and nail, then inadvertently succumbs to his seduction probably crying rape and then denying her feelings, acting all honorable and shit but it actually hurts them both and fuels their actions to further hurt each other again. Man will the cycle never end?!!
OVERALL I honestly skimmed through this story because it was cringing to read the whole thing. It made me want to do SERIOUS MURDER when I read their interactions. My favorite part of the story was when Rhonwen sacrificed herself to save Jasper, throwing herself in front of the enemy's sword and Jasper was terrified to lose her, it was a revelation of his honest feelings and hers. Until they both were back in denial and being stupid, then its annoying again. How can anyone doubt a person's love when she will die to protect you?
Honestly, BECNEL characters have a poor way of showing their emotions and LOVE. Where is the love? Passion is definitely there but the emotional connection is SADLY LACKING because apart from a few lusty kisses and quick fucks, what is there to them? If you would still like to read it, maybe you may have a differ opinion as I have read to many BECNEL to appreciate this one.
Enjoyed this one, although it took me a while to pick it up and stick with it past the first page. I knew it would be emotionally involving, which it was. I knew it would involve intrigue and betrayal, which it did. Thankfully I found myself in a less frivolous mood than I usually am and decided to reenter the story of Rosecliffe Castle, an English fortification in a newly conquored Wales.
Jasper is the younger Fitz Hugh brother, sent to pacify the conquered Welsh; Rhonwen the Welsh rebel who's spent her life fighting off the English invaders. Their story is touching and believable and both characters are extremely likeable, despite their differences. Recommended.
Rhonwen nenávidí Angličanov a najviac z nich Jaspera. Tam podlieha túžbe a nevinnú Rhonwen zvedie... I read this many years ago, I really liked it then. I still have to say it's pretty good. It helped the main characters name was Jasper, which is near and dear to my heart right now.
