Basics Film-Making: Directing Fiction introduces the essential aspects of the directorial process, focusing on the requirements of short films while also drawing on classic examples from the world of feature films. It looks at the balancing act of art and business, offering helpful guidelines and basic principles rather than instructions. Divided into the three key stages of the film-making process; pre-production, production and post-production; the book provides students with a framework to begin directing their own productions. The chapters are interspersed with case studies investigating the working practices of leading professionals such as Robert Rodriguez and Mike Leigh. The title also includes an interview with Mark Herman, director of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Little Voice and Brassed Off. Other titles in the Basics Film-Making series include: Screenwriting, Producing and The Language of Film.
A concise primer covering from pre-production to exhibition but it's so basic and brief that it probably doesn't teach much for everyone ever involved in short film production . The lack of connection between pages make it feels more like a series of note cards than a book. On the up side, you are going to finish it faster than you think.
It was a fast-read, and I liked the concept of the book. But, I don't think it added much information to what I already know, but still, there were bits here and there that helped. It would be a good read for someone who really doesn't know anything about Filmmaking and Directing. As stated in the title, it is "Basics".
A very useful but simple primer on film directing. Well thought out book. Anyone who has been on a set for any length of time wont find a ton of new material here, but the director and movie list at the end is useful.
