"What kind of confession are you looking for, brother...?"
Black disappears, leaving Miri alone in San Francisco mere days after they return from Bangkok. No explanation. Not a word about where he is, what he's doing, what his mysterious new contract entails or even who he's working for. Black will only drop her cryptic hints, leaving her breadcrumbs about where he is, what he's doing... what it all means.
Miri can feel him though, more every day. She feels so much from him, from her dreams and into her waking life, that her world starts to spin out of control, especially when things between Black and his new employer begin to sour. Black's in danger, although he won't admit that to her either. Worse, his new "job" starts to look more like Black being run through the gauntlet, proving his loyalty to his race and to the psychopathic Lucky Lucifer, who controls a mysterious cult of seers out of Europe.
Convinced Black's life is in danger, Miri realizes only she can save him. But to help Black, she has to cross lines she swore she'd never cross, exposing herself in a way that will change her life forever.
Book three in the paranormal mystery romance series starring brilliant but dangerous psychic detective, Quentin Black, and his partner in crime, forensic psychologist, Miri Fox.

To be fair, I bought this on release date, after devouring the first two, so I noticed foibles a lot more than I may have had I read other books in between.
In this edition, our heroine's heart stops so often as an emotional reaction that I was waiting for someone to give her CPR. Add to that the fact that she STILL bites her lip so much that I'd be surprised if her bottom lip and tongue aren't permanently maimed and I ended up more annoyed with this book than I was with the precious ones.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the worldbuilding and getting more of our heroine's history and so forth, but seriously, does EVERYONE have to be raped in this series????
Luckily the rape in this one was a lot less graphic than in the last book, but it still broke my heart and disgusted me enough that I may actually not pick up the next one, which sucks, because I LOVE the two protagonists and the worldbuilding.
I wouldn't recommend this as a standalone, but if you've already read the first two, I'd still suggest reading this one if for nothing else than the progress made in Miriam and Quinten's relationship.
Toujours aussi glauque, toujours autant de le flou (comme Miri de toute façon) mais on avance! Je suis toujours accroc même si parfois le côté homme des cavernes de Black me ferait jeter ma liseuse de 11eme ! Et que dire de Nick 🙄
umm...did I think the big twist was worth all of this confusion, anguish, fear, and murder? No.
Spoiler review:
I'm kind of over these books at this point.. but maybe I will read on to see what other crap goes down or to see if there are actually answers in the next book.
Oh and PS if she keeps biting her lip for enough to draw blood-she won’t have any lips left. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Black On Black (Quentin Black Mystery 3) JC Andrijeski
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: romance, paranormal
I’m loving this series. Its no secret that Allie’s War is one of my favourite series and this also has Seers in it. With book one I wondered how the two worlds fit together, they both feature Earth but in a slightly different way and on this one Seers are still not known to most humans, keeping themselves secret. I’m kind of going with a parallel worlds scenario for now – that’s how my mind perceives it, whether that's how JCA intends it that way I’ve no idea, but I need to have that fixed or my head keeps on throwing out questions. There’s definitely a connection and both Syrimme and Wreg get a mention here as being on Old Earth.
So – Black, he reminds me so much of Revik in many ways. His speech and the way he puts things, the way he’s fixated on Miri to the point of recklessness at times, the way he’s so incredibly intelligent, plans and manoeuvres to get the outcomes he wants. He met Miri in book one, and knew a bit about her but since then he’s learned so much more, he sees her at “his” and has the sometimes irrational jealousy that Seers have for their Mate ( Revik to a T!!). Poor Miri though is only just learning about Seers, to her she was just a human with some strong psychic powers enabling her to read others minds, which she’d been told by her dad to keep a secret, never let anyone know about it. Of course its helped in her work with the police, and she’s learned tricks to explain how she knows things. Since meeting Black though and finding out about Seers she’s become embroiled in a dangerous world. Her fiancé Ian, turned out to be a Seer ordered to be with her despite his distaste for humans, so clearly someone high up in the Seer world knew about her. He’s turned out to be a murderous psychopath though, and she’s in danger from him still. Black has gone “dark” once again and Miri knows through their mental contact something is wrong. She can’t convince his colleagues though, they say there’s protocol to follow when he goes deep undercover like this and they can’t interfere. They don’t know what he is or that the dangers are more than human. Miri can’t just leave him though, she’s seen through their bond that he’s undergoing things he doesn’t want to do and being put under great pressure, and she doesn’t think he can hold out much longer. He’d told her it would only be for six months but she doesn’t think he can last that long, or that Lucky will really just let him go.... She puts a dangerous plan into action that takes her into Europe along with friends from the Police Nick and Angel. She needed their help to get to where she wants to be, but first had to convince them of the dangers to Black, but of course couldn’t tell them about Seers, only that she could read minds ( that was fun!). Nick knows some of Lucky's crimes and of course about murderer Ian from the wedding murders, as there’s a crossover into human crime from what they have been doing. She can’t tell them though that Lucky and Ian are Seers for their own protection, plus of course they’d probably just lock her up! Their journey brings them all into some real dangers, and unlocks some huge surprises to them all. Certainly caught me out...again.
JCA is self published and that phenomenon brought out a huge number of books and authors. I love it when authors like JCA have taken this route, as it seems publishing houses have this criteria about delays between books so a series gets one a year or eighteen months or longer even! By the I’ve lost much of the impact, can’t really get into the story without rereading earlier ones. In self publishing though there are no stipulations and authors like JCA can publish as often as they want. That means book four of this series is out in Jan next year, and its only a few months back that book one came out! They all are very professionally edited and don’t feel rushed in any way. When there are so many different series on the go and the worlds and events are so complex I find it hard to know just how on earth ( this one or any other!) she does it but I’m really, really grateful she does. Of course Self Publishing has also led to some unfinished series, to authors that have written maybe part one and two of a serial that never gets finished, that they have no intention of finishing. That’s sad and reflects badly on self publishing authors, tarring them all as unreliable, which is a shame as I’ve had some terrific books by authors that maybe wouldn’t have got a start through traditional routes. If an author of a series/trilogy is new to me I find I’m waiting now till several books are out before buying because of being caught by that, and of course that’s a catch 22 situation – with what seems a lack of interest then authors may just give up on a series :-( For Example one paranormal series I began back in 2012 when there were two books out is still waiting for book three, originally promised for late 2012, then early 2013, late 2013 etc. It was a really promising storyline and I’m sad, but given up on it now. I’ve had the same via romance trilogies where they get abandoned leaving the reader stuck on a horrible cliff-hanger. That’s why I love authors like JCA who deliver what they promise when they promise, write books with a real story, a fantastic scene setting and turn out novels in a number of months not years.
So,rant over and back to Black – it's another fabulous, rivetting read leaving me keen for more.
Stars: Five, a great read.
If you enjoyed my review I'd love it if you would please click “Like” and if you didn't I'd love to know why, so I can make future reviews more helpful.
Really great story. gritty and fast paced. Psychics and alien races. Suspence and murder. I can't put it down. HOLY SHIT!!! The twists and turns are mindblowing!!! I can't put down this series!
This book went no where and accomplished nothing!?! Except, apparently, that he is just magically returning at the end (contract ended? rescued? who knows??) Now that might have been a story:/
Black On Black is the third book in the Quentin Black Mystery Series by J.C. Andrijeski. WHY? WHY? WHY? Have I not discovered this author before now? I have seriously been missing out on some stellar reads, and that is something I plan to remedy starting immediately. This turned out to be quite the epic book binge- and I enjoyed every single second- even if the author constantly had my heart in my mouth, or had me pulling my hair out in frustration, or seemed to delight in toying with my emotions pretty much the entire time- I willingly went back for more each and every time. Sixteen books in and I can’t wait for more!!! Seriously, this series truly is a MUST-READ, especially for anyone who loves really original paranormal mysteries with incredible world-building and scene setting. If you love immersive reads, then this is definitely the series for you! But be warned, this isn’t a ‘light and fluffy’ cozy paranormal mystery- this has plenty of gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE situations. There are potential triggers contained through the series- such as violence, murder, abuse, sexual abuse, manipulation, graphic language and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of those subjects. I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and this is another fortuitous find of late, because not only was I hooked on the story within the first few pages and practically inhaled the entire series back-to-back…. it is also turned out to be entirely addictive reading, with Ms. Andrijeski’s stellar storytelling talents, her clever and intriguing touches, the many well-developed and interesting characters, the brilliant ‘world’ creation, and all the other rich layers and ‘flavours’ she poured into her pages, made the real world fade away as I was swept along on adventure after adventure. J.C. Andrijeski’s world building skills are sheer perfection, putting me front and centre to all the action-packed developments in this immersive, captivating, and addictive book/series. I am so hooked on her work now and will happily devour anything she ever produces- so I see plenty of book binges in my future. This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, mystery with a serial killer, tension, intrigue, seers, vampires, chemistry, sizzle, science fiction, crime and investigation, deadly games of cat and mouse, murder, violence drama, danger, friendship, and so much more that I won’t get into here because I really don’t want to spoil it for you. Ms. Andrijeski has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and painted a powerful picture- I really could see this making a fantastic movie or television series. Highly Recommended Reading!!! Happy Reading…
𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑶𝒏 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌, Book #3 in the Quentin Black series by J.C. Andrijeski
Again, I'm torn in my reaction to these books. Much like the writing of JA Konrath, one has to be in a very particular mindset to read this series. There is not only a wealth of violence, but most of it has an emotional and/or sexual content to it. Like my grown sons, Andrijeski evidently finds the word fuck to be the quintessential all-purpose word -- a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition -- there seems to be no limit to the grammatical ways in which Andrijeski finds to use that word. And, for the most part, it doesn't bother me. However, when it is used as sweet talk in moments of intense intimacy, I'll admit it annoys the hell out of me. If any man ever spoke to me like that in said circumstances, he would not have time to find his tidy whities before he found himself naked on my front porch. I mean, as Miriam seems fond of saying, seriously? The amount of misogyny contained in these books, especially given that Andrijeski is a woman, is very wearing. I assume she is trying to make a point about the male vs. female situation in general, but, if so, she often seems to be on the wrong side.
I did find a couple of proofing errors, but I decided to let them slide, as I was steamed enough about the above. So, no stars off for proofing/editing problems.
The plotting and pacing were excellent. The story flowed like water over Niagra. Lots of action, plenty of violence, a lot of sick fucks (see what I did there?), and developing, if infuriating, characters. There was a dandy twist in the revealing of the identity of Mr. Lucky, one that was well crafted, but definitely cemented by feelings about the author detailed in my first paragraph. The plot line pulls the reader in and makes the reading of this novel very quick, although not a lot of fun.
I still have one more book in the series on my Kindle. I plan to read it now and then assess whether I will be going further into the series.
Psychic detective Quentin Black disappears leaving his partner and forensic psychologist Miri Fox alone in San Francisco as soon as they return from Bangkok. He gave no explanation and gave no clues as to what he is doing, just leaving her the equivalent of breadcrumbs and cryptic hints. Miri is able to feel him more and more every day both when she is awake and when she is asleep dreaming to the point that her life starts to spin out of control as she senses what Black is doing is starting to be out of his control. She can sense he is in danger, but he won't admit it and no one will listen to her when she tries to get help from his staff. She can sense this new job of his is becoming more like a gauntlet and a test proving his loyalty of both his race and the mysterious Lucky Lucifer who controls a seer cult in Europe. So Miri realises she has to save Black even if she has to cross some cultural lines changing her life forever.
Oh wow - this book was all action, drama, danger and one hell of a reveal of information at the end that was impossible to predict. Lots of references to events in the previous books and some cross over to the Bridge and Sword World books which you might pick up easier now the final book in that series has been published. I loved how Miri was the strong one for much of this and she was the one knowing what she wanted and was going out to make sure she got it. Well written and very enjoyable. I have to confess I was unable to stop reading this and might have stayed up very late because I couldn't bare to not know what happened next.
This review encompasses the entire 4 book Quentin Black Mystery series. I've read works by this author in the past and enjoyed them. I also really enjoyed this series.
I did get a little frustrated with the lack of answers at times, the fact that Miri doesn't truly pursue them, and on the rare occasions she does ask she doesn't seem to get them. I really would have liked for Miri to have shown much more interested in her own genetics and non-human half. Perhaps the author explores that further in the other Quentin Black series - sadly since I know it's vampire related I won't be pursuing reading that series in spite of my enjoyment of this one. Vampires just don't really interest me much.
I also got a little frustrated the with constant pain and pushing/pulling of light. Miri was a bit of an annoying character, as much as I wanted to like her. For a psychologist she really didn't seem to understand people's motivations and personalities other than those of the criminals she profiled.
Overall however, I did really enjoy the character of Black himself, and the mysteries and crimes these two needed to solve. I also enjoyed the secondary characters of Nick and Angel. I read the four books in this series in quick succession because I was very into it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I love the dark, noirishly gritty paranormal-scifi-mystery mashup of a world that is inhabited by the tales in JC Andrijeski’s Quentin Black Mysteries. It’s lead characters, brilliant and dangerous psychic detective Quentin Black, and forensic psychologist Miriam (Miri) Fox, and their secrets (no, I won’t tell) are an ideal pairing for this world. So I’m overjoyed to have had the chance to grab onto a new adventure of theirs in Black On Black (Quentin Black Mystery Book 3). This is the perfect paranormal mystery. Beautifully plotted and superbly written. The only flaw here is that it’s making an already addictive series dangerously more so. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to Black Is Back, the next book in this series.
Miri and Quentin return from Bangkok for a little bit before he runs off again. He won't tell her where he is or what he is doing but says it will only be for six months. Miri isn't sure what to make of what's going on especially since Black refused to sleep with her before he left and still hasn't explained much. But things are changing and Miri can sense a lot more than she used to from Black and believes he is in serious danger. She pulls out all the stops to rescue him and finally gets some answers about her past...that just lead to more questions.
I have the same issues of Black being a high handed jerk and Miri not having enough backbone, along with a serious lack of answers. But again, I can't put these books down once I start them. There is something about the characters and the story that just keeps you reading because you have to see what happens.
*borrowed from book notes on Kindle Unltd.: Black disappears, leaving Miri alone in San Francisco mere days after they return from Bangkok.
No explanation. Black will only drop cryptic hints, leaving her breadcrumbs. Miri can feel him, though. More every day. She feels so much through her dreams and into her waking life that her world starts to spin out of control, especially when things between Black and his new employer begin to sour. Black's in danger, although he won't admit that, either. Only Miri can save him. But to help Black, she has to cross lines she swore she'd never cross, exposing herself in a way that will change her life forever.
I’ve already read ahead in the series, so I can’t honestly say this was a surprise. But that’s exactly what it would have been if I hadn’t already learned the plot twist. I have a very different appreciation for this series after having read more in the Bridge & Sword universe. Having that background in Seer culture, I don’t feel as lost as I’m sure Miri is. Though I do find that every now and again, there will be an event I expect to happen one way that plays out differently simply because that’s not the way it works in Black and Miri’s world. I want to read more of this series for a very long time to come.
Black on Black, book 3 of the Quentin Black series, has a dark edge, and people sensitive to child trafficking or rape should be warned, the content may be upsetting. The Black series has an unusual and addictive story line! I enjoyed the plot advancement and appreciated receiving answers to some ongoing questions; in fact, I read this book in one sitting! There was plenty of action, suspense, and plot twists to keep me riveted. Unfortunately, this ebook was riddled with format and proofreading errors (examples: dong=doing, dropped punctuation). Regardless of errors, in honesty, I was up until 2 am because I couldn't put this book down.
Me: Damn, this is a great book Him: Mmm Me: Oh, no he didn't! Him: Who didn't? Me: Nothing. Sorry. This is just a good book. Him: Mmm 2 hours later Me: No, effin' way!!! Him: Now what? Me: Nothing. I just loooove this book. 4 hours later. Not having moved from my nest on the bed. Him: Are you STILL reading that book? Me: Uh, yeah. Well, same series, different book. I loooove it. Him: I guess you leaving the bedroom today is a mute point? Me: Uh, what? Oh, uh, yeah. That ain't happening anytime soon. Sorry. (Not sorry!😜)
I haven't read stories like JC Andrijeski writes in a very long time. Stories that keeps me riveted to almost every page to the very end. I'm usually pretty good at guessing what most authors try to write, but not this author which I truly appreciate. The way she writes is a big plus as well cause not only is she good with the storylines, her wow factor and sexilicious characters but she makes the reading, at least for me, come together like I'm actually watching it like a movie.☺☺
This book got off to a slow start to me, but thr last quarter or so we are finally givrn some answers and information. However, I can only wish for more. Also graphic rape scene again. Understand why people have issues with it, but the seer race, I begin to understand, are a violent people. They really think they do the righr thing with their weird fuck rituals. I liked the plot twist near the end with Lucky Lucifer, I'm interested to see where it goes. That he has some complex/issues is abundantly clear though.
She pulls out all the stops. Although Nick is being a douche at least he is willing to go out on a limb. I hope that they don't sacrifice themselves, which I am feeling that they will, which will break my heart. I hope in the end you get both Lucky 7 and Ethan. Her uncle has no right to throw stones at glass house. If your folks did such a surperb job as they say, then he should have understood why he turned down 'Uncle Charlie's ' request. Ethan's outcome was justified for the simple fact he said he was gonna fix it the first time, and he didn't. Chomp on that Uncle Charlie.
I'm not going to do a recap of the plot, because other reviewers have, and you can read those. It was good to get some of Miriam's history, and to see how much Black is devoted to her. Nick and Angel are the best friends ever! I was very concerned for the Louvre.
Book 3 in a series; don't try to read it as a standalone.
Contains sex scenes, swear words (mostly the F word), and violence.
I had started the series intending to only read the first book and come back periodically for the rest of the books. Well that didn’t work out quite like I intended. I am finding this couple fascinating. The only thing I didn’t like was the introduction of so much pain into their acts of intimacy.
4 ½ *stars REALLY OK, I’M ON BK#3 AND THIS IS NOT TELLING, TALKING, THINK TALKING IS GETTING ON MY NERVES. I REALLY STARTED OUT LIKING THE STORY LINE AND THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS BUT NOW ITS GETTING TOO MUCH OF THE SAME STUFF PAGE AFTER PAGE. I’M JUST MAD BECAUSE IT’S NOT GOING THE WAY I WANT IT TO GO. I STILL LIKE THE SERIES.;D
I didn't think it was possible in how great the first 2 books were but this one got better. It goes deeper and darker than before and there are so many twists and turns on this rollercoaster ride that you will be dizzy by the end if the book. Action packed, mysterious and deadly - you dont want to miss this one. Highly recommended
This is the third book in the series and I’m already dreading the day of completion. Such an amazing series to read you won’t want to let the book down!!!
This 3rd book in the series was another exciting story. The fast pace and the imagination and descriptions of the characters will keep you from putting the book down. This whole series is a must read. I loved it.
There is something imminently satisfying about flying through the drama with these characters. The storylines is of course, exciting but the interaction of the players makes for enticing reading.
It was so good to finally find out more about Black and how he was really thinking also Miri. That was a really surprising twist at the end of this book, I wasn’t expecting that.
