This is a long novel but it wasn't long enough for me. I just loved the English heroine and her foray into rural Ireland, where she finds an old house filled with fascinating characters. If you liked Cold Comfort Farm, you will see some parallels, as Bobbie sets about transforming the lives of the oddballs who live in this tumbledown mansion. There's a great love story, too.

This was an epic read! At 905 pages, it's one of the longest books I've read in awhile. But it was well worth it. I found the first 100 pages or so to be a bit slow going but once Bobbie reaches Ireland, the story took off for me. I love character driven British novels and this one did not let me down.

I'm really upset to discover how difficult it is to track down Victoria Clayton's other novels. I've only managed to find one so far and I want to read them all!

Lekker chill!

This is long novel (almost 700 pages) which takes awhile to get going. The first 150 pages or so explain why the protagonist, Bobbie, is escaping from England to be housekeeper in a remote castle in Ireland. There was a lot of flashback and discussion about the past, and it was hard to see where the story was going.

However, once Bobbie arrives at her destination and gets to know the people she will be working for, it picks up pace. It's a character-based book primarily, but it touches on some important issues and is set firmly in the context of Ireland in the late 1970s. The author evidently understands several different perspectives, and I felt the background to the Irish 'troubles' came to life, along with the staunch Catholic beliefs - often mixed up with superstition - that were common to so many.

All in all, I enjoyed this very much. Four and a half stars would be fairer.

I enjoyed this more than other Clayton's novels, and that says a lot since I have enjoyed all of them.
The book was slow to get into and fully interested in the story, at least a hundred pages, but on page 177 or thereabouts I was hooked and from then on it was such a pleasant ride.
The plot is good, but it is Connemara, the restoration of the castle and its overgrown garden, great characters, humour and the overall satisfaction that one gets – like Roberta – of improving things that lifted this to full five stars. It would have been lovely to continue reading about Curraghcourt forever.

I quite liked this but it was unnecessarily long at nearly 700 pages, I actually felt it could have been two books. The characters are mostly likeable and the descriptive writing of the desmene in Ireland is excellent; it’s also quite funny in places. Inevitably due to its length, there are several plots going on at once, which overcomplicates the book, yet the ending is quite predictable unfortunately.

Blah. I usually like this author not wildly but well enough to settle in for a Sunday afternoon's read. Didn't get more than 100 pages in. I know the other reviewers say it gets better later, but I found the start so off putting -- why does she stay at home with those disgusting parents? Why does the man in the boat spend acres of time ceaselessly listening to her talk on and on and on? -- and the heroines passive attitude toward life, that I just have up. I don't need these depressing people in my head thank you.

Victoria Clayton is an under-appreciated writer. Although her books fall squarely into the "romance" category, don't go looking for hot and heavy sex scenes or heavy breathing. This is a character driven story...an unfolding so to speak. The setting is a dilapitated castle in Ireland....need I say more?
Gorgeous scenery, terrific (if somewhat eccentric characters and a wonderful heroine. This is the kind of book you snuggle up to on a rainy day with a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

Take my word for it, it's a lovely read. Under-rated but well worth your time.

I'm just reading this book now on ILL. So far it is good, although it seems to be taking a long time to set the scene & for the main action to begin. It's nearly 700 pages long, so plenty of time left for plot development. I've enjoyed other titles by this author so have high hopes.

This book was good but a lot longer than similar ones in this genre normally are. The characters are appealing & the setting interesting which makes it a fun read.

It was an entertaining book & fun read.

Excellent book, a joy to read. The book does take a little while to get into but well worth it. The characters are quite eccentric and so entertaining. Feel rather upset that I've finished it really. First time I have read a book by this author but I will certainly be reading more.

Love this author so much. All her books are permanently on my shelf for re-reading! Any fan of Rosamunde Pilcher, Marcia Willett, Maeve Binchy, Jane Duncan, DE Stevenson, and Belva Plain should give Miss Clayton a try.

Far too much back story before the real action. Loved all the cooking and food going on. good read for romantic greedy guts!

While 4 stars is a tad generous, this was a really good summer read. The ending was rather long winded though.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book again. It made me giggle sometimes and the plot was unpredictable again. Forgot how it ended. And now I remember.

Leuk boek.
