Matt Dixon is back in his most deadly case yet. In a terrifying echo of the last case he worked on before resigning from the police force a pop star and his girlfriend are killed in the village of Furlong Bridge. Both the location and the method appear identical to the previous murders and a note found near the bodies is signed by 'The Devil'. Matt's partner, Jane, has just given birth to their first child, Eloise, and when Matt is asked for his help he refuses, not wishing to leave his new family. However, when a third, and then fourth, body is discovered, the note tells the investigating officers quite clearly that the only person capable of finding the killer is Matt. The threat implicit in the latest note is that he must track down 'The Devil' personally or his family will be targeted. Dragged unwillingly into the investigation he meets an old friend, the woman he fell in love with when he was only twenty years old. Unsure what her feelings towards him will now be, he is faced with the prospect of having to find the killer in less than four days or put his new daughter at risk. A daunting task is suddenly made more difficult when 'The Devil' steps up the pace and he has only one day left in which to locate him before he goes after Jane and Eloise. In the dramatic final confrontation, he comes face-to-face with the deadly and ruthless killer he has been searching for since before he left the police force, knowing only one of them can survive. Meanwhile, watching from afar are two members of a race of demons capable of controlling people by taking possession of their minds, and they may yet have the final say in who will live and who will die.
