A woman re-mortgages her home to pay for three trips back in time to 1968 to get the one photo of her deceased husband that she thinks will define what he had once said was the happiest time in his life.
Jeff Willoughby traveled much of the United States as a musician in a rock group, as a bass guitarist, singer/songwriter and recording artist. He now lives in the same small Pennsylvania town in which he was born. After leaving the road in 2008, he began writing mostly fiction in the form of scripts and short stories. His first book, THIS SIDE OF CENTER, (released in 2014) is a collection of 15 original short stories. A second book in the anthology, THIS SIDE OF CENTER-ENCORE, released in 2016. He has vowed to continue to write "so long as the voices in my head remain louder than the ringing in my ears." With a penchant for the visual arts as well, when not writing he edits and transforms his photos and images in an ever-growing collection of original art.
Beautiful, nostalgic, and heartbreaking are the words that come to mind as I read this story. A woman is given a chance to travel back in time to take a picture of her husband in one of his happiest moments. Although I grew up in the late 80s, early 90s I remember a similar time when the only thing I had to worry about was what I was going to wear to a high school football on Friday night. Short and quick read, but I couldn't stop thinking about it after I read it. Great book. Highly recommend.
Highly recommended. One wonders if all generations look back to the past, nostalgic for their youth, when times were simpler and people still seemed to care about one another? Probably, but few would have the opportunity to revisit that time and this, perhaps, is why this story resonates so deeply. I'm still in awe of how a gifted storyteller can pack so much into so few words. Strangely, I think this may be one of the best explained time travel theories and least headache-making that I've yet read. Also a deft description of how the dreaded time travel paradox can be avoided. I think. Shall have to contemplate it further. That was very unexpected, but most gratifying.
A highly original setting and concept set this book apart from others. It is a time travel book... and yet that's not in any way the important part of this story. It's first and foremost a human story, with the time travel element hovering very far in the background purely in order to set up the unusual circumstances of the relationship. It's a short story, with a lot of emotional and interpersonal content packed densely into a few virtual pages. My personal preference is for longer stories, but this is a fine gem to have discovered. So if you don't think time travel is your thing, don't let that put you off from delving into Snapshot.
This story is perfect! Captivating, heart-warming, and abundant with wisdom. It speaks straight to the heart of anyone who has been blessed with a love that made their life, whether the love of is that of parent, child, family member, best friend or a romantic love, as is the case of the couple in the story. This is a MUST-READ for everyone!!!! I absolutely love it!!!!
