Rate this book
Having only been given a name for their unique nature a few decades ago, highly sensitive people, or HSPs, are finally able to identify their traits and connect with one another in new and beneficial ways. In her book, The Emerging A Guide For Finding Your Place In The World, Maria Hill illuminates the path to self-exploration and discovery for HSPs.

The Emerging Sensitive paints a vivid picture of how the sensitive experience has created a unique life journey. It illuminates the history of sensitive people by tracing the roots of HSPs back to the earliest civilizations. Using the evolutional framework of Spiral Dynamics as laid out by Don Beck and Chris Cowan The Emerging Sensitive discusses the shifting roles of highly sensitive people in societies throughout the ages and explores what the future holds as culture shifts to a more HSP-friendly stage while including ideas for moving out into the world in a safe way.

The book provides important mental supports through frameworks that HSPs need in order to navigate the world more easily. It has 4 parts and a large resources section.

Part 1: Understanding The Highly Sensitive

- How the biological difference of highly sensitive people results in a unique physically and emotional experience.
- How the 'DOES' Model Of Highly Sensitive People created by Dr. Elaine Aron helps us understand the different ways of thinking and processing information for highly sensitive people.
- How sensitivity makes a tangible difference in the world.
- How the characteristics of sensitivity become a gift to ourselves and each other.

Part 2: The Importance And Value Of

- What frameworks are, why they are important and how they help us make sense of the world better.
- How the evolution framework, Spiral Dynamics, based on the research of Dr. Clare Graves, provides insights for highly sensitive people, and a tool for processing information more easily.

Part 3: Getting A Handle On The

- Why the structures of the world cause HSPs feel out of sync and find it hard to thrive.
- How the world is changing and why it provides fresh opportunities for highly sensitive people that will make life more fulfilling.
- Which new fields and opportunities for highly sensitive people suit their natures.

Part 4: Claiming

- What is “agency” and why is it hard to claim agency as a highly sensitive person.
- Which skills and tools highly sensitive people need to harness their sensitivity for positive results
- How to make changes and put the information to work.

Finally the book has a large resources section covering the HSP trait, frameworks, trends and opportunities, self help tools including health and stress relief.

Hope is not enough. Sensitive people need tools frameworks and viable solutions to the challenges they face. With the guidance and resources contained within this book, HSPs can begin to discover and nurture their true potential.

Definitely not for me but might be for the right person. I've been reading up on highly sensitive people (HSP) and was looking forward to this book. I've read a few and already have some basic knowledge so I thought (and hoped) this book would give me greater guidance on creating my own path.

The book is useful in going a bit beyond a textbook 101-style approach of what is an HSP, how are they different, basic awareness/coping mechanisms, etc. Some of it was quite interesting in looking at "frameworks" and how and why an HSP might find it difficult in the framework(s) they are in and how the frameworks change, adapt, etc.

However, some of the criticism and negative reviews are warranted. Overall it felt more appropriate for a blog. There's extensive quoting and responding to/detailing explanations by Elaine Aron. There's discussion of capitalism and why it is difficult for an HSP to operate in the framework of capitalism, plus resources for people who are interested in ideas/topics/movements/frameworks like the slow movement, the commons movement, etc. Mildly interesting and helpful/something for HSPs to perhaps learn from, but really not for me. It felt a little too "hippy-ish" which is a problem I had with Elaine Aron's book too.

I also hate the format of the paper book. For some reason the pages are waxy paper instead of paper. Seems like an odd choice.

Perhaps for other HSPs this might be a good book. But I was pretty turned off by what seemed more like content for a blog than a book. I regret buying it but my library didn't have it.

This was a truly fascinating book. It contains a plethora of suggestions and resources for the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). It explores the traits of the HSP, showing that while they may be viewed as different, they should not be valued as less than anyone else.

The author does a fabulous job of explaining the variety of internal and external challenges faced by the HSP, as well as how the HSP can empower themselves in the face of those challenges.

If you are an HSP or know someone who is, this book is a must read!

The Emerging Sensitive by Maria Hill gives a personal understanding of living as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) while at the same time educates about this condition (HSP). The book explains more than just super annoyance or irritability and a label of “sensitive” – this is a condition which has profound, and sometimes incapacitating, effect on the person, family, their friends and impacts and complicates work, social interactions and lifestyle.

Hill has included a detailed list of observations, options and suggestions towards the end of the book as well as a comprehensive resource guide.
If you are a highly sensitive person or know someone who is then The Emerging Sensitive will give you some good insights.

Wow!!! I understand better how living in a capitalist society conflicts with my beliefs, is hard on my nervous system, and how to help myself! A wonderful book for those with sensitive nervous systems and for parents of sensitive children - how to nourish those gifts!! Highly recommend this book for churches, managers in companies to make better use of these emerging spirits, and for those who don't understand these different folks!

It feels like a manifesto rather than a guide. Too vague to be practical and too lengthy. Lack of relevant quality evidence and accurate examples. Subject to bias against capitalism, science, and modern medicine. Encourage division: us (HSP's) vs them (neurotypicals,) rather than promote diverse society.
