As far as cynical attorney Jack McGowan was concerned, he couldn't have much sympathy for a woman who'd chosen to marry his filthy-rich sworn enemy. He would represent Kimberly Bennett in her desperate child-custody battle-and he would taste sweet revenge against her shady ex-husband-but he'd steer clear of both her and her little girl's beseeching blue eyes.
Degree by slaw degree, Kim felt icy Jake warm toward her little family's plight. Yet shadows lingered in his eyes, bleakness in his smile, desperation in his hungry kisses. What had hardened his heart so? And now that she loved him, was she about to taste the bittersweetness of regret?
Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.
Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.
With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.
Lisa Jackson is a very good storyteller. Her novels are always well-plotted and peopled. This book needed a little more thorough editing for grammar and usage. (Peak instead of peek; laid instead of lay, and similar misused words.)
Like others who left a review, I was a little confused about this book. I thought this was a newer standalone book by Lisa Jackson, but it is 3 of her older, shorter, romance novels in one book. I'm guessing they are just repackaged and released again. I am certainly not upset about it. I will just review each one separately. The first story is called "No Regrets." It is predictable, but actually pretty good.
Kimberly and her 5 year old daughter, Lindsay, live alone. Kimberly works at a bank at a cushy job her wealthy ex-husband, Robert, got for her. Robert gave Kimberly full custody of Lindsay in exchange for not giving up any of his money to her. Now he has a new woman and wants custody of Lindsay.
Kimberly is not going to let that happen. Her best friend is her lawyer, but she is moving away. She recommends another lawyer. The other lawyer happens to be a sweet, sexy, famous lawyer named Jake McGowen.
Kimberly has some serious problems. First of all, her ex is ruthless and willing to do anything to get what he wants. Secondly, the sexy lawyer has a hidden reason for taking her case. Thirdly, Kimberly is intimate with the sexy lawyer. Given the serious problems aforementioned, it doesn't take long before serious trouble hits, and 911 is called.
Jake is a man bent on getting anything he can on a man named Robert Fisher and his crooked lawyer Ben Kesler.....in walks Kimberly Bennett...Fisher's ex-wife who is determined to obtain permanent custody of her daughter. Sparks fly between lawyer and client, even though they try desperately at first to keep their relationship strictly professional...but as time passes, they can't fight the attraction they feel for each other and begin a romantic relationship as well.
Things come to a head when Fisher and his bodyguard attempt to kidnap the daughter and are arrested for their efforts. Misunderstandings arise between jake and Kimberly but are soon straightened out and they declare their love for one another.
3.5 stars.. Kimberly knows how cruel and dishonest her ex-husband, Robert Fisher can be. But she refuses to believe that he is a criminal. Doesn't explain Robert's motives Jake McGowan has his secrets, but he is drawn to Kimberly and Lindsay. Wished I could have a neighbor like Lindsay's babysitter, Arlene.
