Music and longing collide in this ballad of unrequited love!
Nino Arisugawa, a girl who loves to sing, experiences her first heart-wrenching goodbye when her beloved childhood friend, Momo, moves away. And after Nino befriends Yuzu, a music composer, she experiences another sad parting! Luckily, Nino reunites with Momo and Yuzu in high school, but things haven’t played out the way anyone expected…
When In No Hurry’s Rock Horizon performance ends in a whirl of frantic passion, does Nino’s voice reach Momo? And with the school festival coming up, the Pop Music Club prepares for its first performance in a long time…with things between Haruyoshi and Miou suddenly heating up!
It wasn't quite as exciting as the previous volume, but I am REALLYYYY liking a certain development between two side characters. I am hoping good things for that and really looking forward to reading more of it!
I think the one thing that I go back and forth with that this volume really highlighted is that sometimes I just want Nino to give up on Momo and see how amazing Yuzu is and go for him instead. Or if she doesn't want to go for anyone and just be single, that's fine too, but it's hard seeing Nino experience a lot of similar feelings she experienced on earlier in the series. Like so much of those feelings could be avoided if she really WOULD move on.
However, as a reader, I think what also makes Nino a compelling character (especially if I had read this in high school) is that she DOESN'T give up. She really loves Momo and when I think of my younger teenage self, I think I would find that "encouraging" in her not giving up. So I think seeing Nino's determination and "coming back" with her fire is a really great part of her character, even if non-teenage me doesn't always love it.
But I agree with Yuzu, what the heck is Momo doing?!
I am very excited to know that we are getting another concert of sorts in the next volume and truly hoping we get all that intensity (or at least excitement) from the previous volume. It is was makes this story so much fun!
(Random note, I was glad to see more of Miou in this volume!)
While it's pretty good, it seams to be retreading old ground a lot. Nino sings, both boys write songs for her, she sings some more, people are enchanted with her voice... That said, we get a few humorous moments, and some hints that we may get some more back story to Yuzu and Momo, and Haruyoshi and Miou both get some screen time here as well. I like the art for the most part, and I do enjoy seeing the performances, just wish there was new drama.
Not much to say about this volume. I'm still enjoying seeing Nino grow, and I'm still rooting for Yuzu. The back and forth Nino/Momo drama is getting a little old, but other than that, it was a pretty good volume!
Except for the part about Miou's ear. That was just...weird.
Man, these kids are obsessed with each other. Lots of vows are made and then unmade. Get them out of my head, make them mine, take them from other them. The beginning has a time jump or two or three. I couldn't keep it straight. The pacing is frantic. I'll give the next volume a shot to see if it's more than loud declarations and confusing dialogue.
ETA: and apparently I didn't read volume 5. That may have caused some of the confusion.
This volume picks up from where the anime stopped. The gang are just finishing up the Rock Horizon gig and they kicked butt! Nino runs after Momo, who did hear her during one moment of the show he was doing with Black Kitty as their bassist/songwriter, but left right after his show finished. She eventually collapses on the ground once the fireworks start and passes right out. Momo find her and kisses her mask, but doesn't wake her up. Yuzu finds them and vows that he will not stop courting Alice and yells at Momo for not telling her how he feels. Three months go by and Momo has changed schools and moved in with his mom, who is using him as the breadwinner for their family. He desperately misses Nino but won't contact her. He contacts Yuzu instead and send him his latest demo to put to music. The Pop Music Club (Band Club in the anime) is set to play at the school's festival and Miou and Alice will be singing. Haruyoshi and Miou are dating as he finally admits he loves her for real, and swears she will think of only him in the future. Yuzu calls Momo and makes him listen to Alice singing with the band, a song that he wrote vs one Momo wrote (though he doesn't tell her Momo wrote the second one). She aces the ballad and thanks him for it afterwards. Momo can hear the love he pours into the song for Alice. It ends right before Momo's song is played. So many feels in this volume, I love it! Highly recommended for ages 14+, 5 stars.
With Momo doing another disappearing act, Nino is left feeling once again like her voice didn't reach him. Her rage fuels her in the aftermath, including the present time which is three months after the Rock Horizon as they are evaluating the response to their album and performance (they kinda lost out to Silent Black Kitty). Yuzu and Nino are also at odds, with a lot of tempers flaring with angst mixed in. Amidst this, Nino's and Miou's interactions feel like a breath of fresh air, even though they are tinged with the latter's envy. To get over Yuzu, Miou accepts Haruyoshi's feelings, but they are still in the awkward phase of their relationship where one knows the other isn't in love with them yet. And all this against the backdrop of the school festival where a popular artist is coming! Meanwhile, Momo himself has transferred to another school, cut off communications, and Silent Black Kitty has had to search for his replacement. In the silence, they are all waiting for the next step to take, and honestly I feel this dude should get his feelings in order and face them. None of that insulting and running away BS anymore.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
That moment when Yuzu told Momo to tell Nino that he loves her and just stay by her side or else he will take Alice from Momo. I mean, she's not a thing to take, but I believe that your heart is in the right place. I'm getting annoyed with Momo running away and leaving Nino. Have some guts and say something, for god sake.
Why did I feel like Momo wasn't kidding about his mom using him for financial gain? Hmm...
Nino acting selfish about Yuzu's music was toxic; tbh, it wasn't her music, to begin with; yes, all of his music so far was for her, but how could she keep him from branching out? That's not good.
Momo and Yuzu have the weirdest relationship, so it was hilarious when Momo asked Yuzu to produce his song.
Yuzu secretly dissing Momo's singing was so funny✌️
Aww, jealous Yuzu, in fairness to him, he can appreciate a good song, but his jealous ass won't let Nino hear the music because of insecurities; Yuzu, you have to believe in yourself more.
Overall, a great volume! On to the next one🔥

So I still really enjoyed this volume, I just found it a shame that this volume did not have the character/story so far summary at the beginning. Maybe it's because we are a decent way in now and should know the characters, but I really like having this reminder at the beginning (and the ability to sometimes look back given different character names are sometimes used for the same character). Still overall the story and characters are pretty great.
So much intensity, so much drama! Miou has got to learn how to let go of her old feelings and see what's right in front of her. But isn't this the theme of the whole thing? Letting go and accepting something new? That last bit here...the moment when Nino is given the new song to sing...I can't wait to see what happens next.
Does anyone else go look for the songs on youtube just to hear what they sound like? I'm so glad they made an anime of this series!
Oh the drama...I love it so much! I honestly don't have much to add about this volume that I haven't already said except that if you don't like love triangles then you may want to skip this manga because there are A LOT throughout this series. Personally I say bring on the love triangles! Can't wait for volume 7!!!
This volume finds the fallout of the Rock Horizon festival but.... 3 months later?? I was a bit confused at the beginning of this volume, but Fukuyama-sensei promised that next volume we will see Alice's "start", and if that's the case, I am ready again to see some great character development and another great story "arc".
As usual, a lot of really big emotions in this volume but not very much traction to actually move things forward -- so it was all right to read but hasn't left much behind. I'm way more invested in the relationship between two of the side characters than in the protagonists, which is not a great sign!
Hint #567 that You May Be Reading a Romance: the entire plot could be resolved if the characters actually talked to each other. I'm pinning the onus for this one on Momo - seriously, get over yourself and stop randomly disappearing on Nino!
This is getting a little tiring, all this back and forth boys declaring Nino being theirs like she's some prized guitar. The side characters are more interesting and feel more real than the three main characters. I'm tired. I think this is it for me.
I know most people don't love, love triangles, but I adore them. I love that this book has multiple and I loved to see the tangles. I can't wait to see where the next volume takes us. I know I may be late to this series but I love when my random picks at the library works out in my favor.
Wavered at 4 and am not a seasoned right to left reader by any means BUT I think it is more than that. I like the drawing, tangled romances, and music but need a little resolution.
Still enjoying this one in spite of myself. Still hating stupid Momo. But at this point I'm suuuuuuper ready for pretty much everyone to just get over themselves!
Haruyoshi hurt me so much in this one. I love me my Yuzu but Miou ya gotta get over him. Let him go. He's not the one for you. Stop hurting Haruyoshi 😭
