Fix You #2

Trouble Me

Rate this book
In Fix You, movie star Andrew Pettigrew (Andy to his fans, Andrew to his friends) somehow found the level-headed love he was looking for in young widow and “regular girl” Kelly Reynolds. Now, as they work to mesh their growing relationship with his gold-statue ambitions, things go a bit sideways, in true Hollywood fashion.

Though they’re still wonderfully in love, it’s challenge enough for Andrew and Kelly to decipher what it means to be a family—and a growing family at that—between takes on set. But Andrew also brings history with a temperamental co-star, assorted paparazzi, and someone out there who has serious, perhaps obsessive, issues with him into the mix. Suddenly the Reynolds-Pettigrew clan must fight not just to stay together, but to stay safe.

In Trouble Me, the sequel to Fix You and third novel from Rita finalist Beck Anderson, Kelly and Andrew struggle to stay sane within their whirlwind life. It’s a life that’s equal parts amazing and amusing, less glamorous than you might expect, and spiked with very real fears no amount of stardom can overcome.

Will Andrew and Kelly stay strong at the broken places or be torn apart?

Beck Anderson writes about perfectly imperfect people. She is a firm believer in love and its power to transform. She also believes firmly in naps and procrastination.

Beck is usually found chasing after her husband and youngest son, who are often out mountain biking, or cheering on her oldest son, a competitive figure skater.

She is a fan of: all dogs (even eighty-pound chewers of aglets), paddle boarding on Lake Tahoe, hiking the foothills of Idaho, and eavesdropping in neighborhood coffee shops (you've been warned).

Love Lasts Through Life's Troubles

Beck Anderson's debut novel Fix You was a 5 star read for me. I wasn't the only one who loved the story as evidenced by its nomination for two RITA awards. Its sequel Trouble Me keeps up the humor and depth, even adding in a suspense element, as Kelly and Andrew's relationship progresses.

Boise was an unusual setting for book one, and in this story we visit the raw, rough Oregon coast as well as more urban settings like NYC and LA.

When movie star Andrew drives his girlfriend Kelly and her two sons to Oregon, he feels choked up by emotion:

I feel full to bursting. I have a family. A beautiful family. I have this girl, this glorious woman to the right of me now, who let me into her life when I probably least deserved it.

The abundance almost makes me scared.

I've never had so much to lose before.

That's a great setup for what's to come. And at that point Andrew doesn't know he'll have even more to lose when his family expands.

Meanwhile, Kelly continues her passion for running, which led her to meet Andrew in the first place.

Whenever I go on walks or runs, I stake out the neighborhood, figure out which house I'd claim as mine.

I TOTALLY do that! There's one house in a nearby neighborhood I've stalked for years.

One of my favorite parts of the story is the marriage proposal running gag. After a lame first attempt, Andrew decides to make it fun:

He pulls out the twist tie from the hot dog bun package. It's twisted in the shape of a ring. "Kelly Reynolds, will you marry me?"

I laugh and hold out my hand. "Where's the Eye of the Tiger?"

"I've arrived at a brilliant idea. I'm going to propose multiple times -- so many times you can't stand it. And you won't be able to tell which is the official, last, 'real' proposal."

As his father says, "Andrew never can do something without a production. We knew from the time he was five he'd be an actor." Ha ha.

The proposals are clever and funny. Perhaps a subtitle for this story could be "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)".

I also laughed at the incident in the trailer when Andrew and Kelly pull a prank on a mean actress. When the trailer's rockin', don't come-a-knockin'!

Things get more serious when somebody obsessed with Andrew tries to kill him. I had a good inkling who Crazy was from the get-go, based on the strangeness of conversations between the characters. The ending was quite suspenseful.

I love the idea of titling the books after songs, and the title I heard for book three sounds great!

3 - Everything ebbs and flows." Stars.

Trouble Me picks up approximately 18 months on from Fix You, Andrew and Kelly have worked through the problems and issues they were dealing with in that installment and are moving on together as a family, with her two children Beau and Hunter. Andy Pettigrew’s star is at its peak, and as always his pushy and extremely motivated Manager Jeremy is there making sure he takes every opportunity that is offered to him. We spend time in LA, New York, Boise and Oregon over the course if this book, and as you would expect meet a few new characters, and revisit some recurring ones along the way.

”This is not how it was supposed to go.”

I was really excited to find out that Beck had written a further book for this couple, the first book in the series was a real surprise for me when I read it, I had expectations of one thing and the author turned everything on its head, I liked that, I liked that it was different and looked at the picture of fame, fortune, addiction and loss from an alternative perspective. The writing is just as lush and engaging in Trouble Me but I have to be honest and say I didn’t really feel a lot of the storyline really added anything to this couple as a whole.

We also have added suspense in Trouble Me to ‘spice’ things up and keep things moving along, for me it was a cross between Fatal Attraction and Single White Female but it wasn’t very suspenseful in the end, usually I am the last one to the party when it comes to working out who the villain, stalker, killer etc is in the piece I am reading, but I clocked it right off the bat with this one, so it was more of a waiting game after that, on when they finally went bat-shit crazy, and what the fall-out from it would be.

”I wish I could make it better for you.”

The dynamic between Andrew and Kelly is very much in the fore again as well, and where we saw a definite shift in Fix You in regards to who it was that was actually struggling to deal with their life and the things happening to them, it flips back around again in this one, Kelly very much becomes the vulnerable party, and Andrew becomes the pillar that she needs to lean on. I liked that, and I liked the strengthening of their family unit as the book progressed, I just feel that where the first book offered something different, this one offered up a homogenized mix of tropes that I have read many, many times before. Still good, but not different.

”Life is precious and short.”

I enjoyed this book, it just didn’t quite meet the high expectations I have of this author, it isn’t a bad read at all, and I would still happily recommend it, I would say that you should make time to read Fix You if you haven’t already, as it shows just how this couple came to be together and how much they went through to get where they are in this book.

PEPPER & MICHELLE'S JOINT REVIEW

Read Pepper & Michelle's Joint Review of FIX YOU (Book #1) HERE

MICHELLE: OK- so as people might now, we were already obsessed with Beck Anderson after reading FIX YOU. But now after meeting Beck, she's the most amazing person.

PEPPER: Literally, Most. Amazing. And now, we really, REALLY love her - cue favorite gif:

MICHELLE: And, not only do we love Beck, but we also loved this book.

PEPPER: OMG. I was so glad we got more of Kelly and Andy!! This follow up was phenomenal!

MICHELLE: BUT - before we go on, know that this is a sequel to FIX YOU. So you have to read that first. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU DID NOT READ BOOK 1.

PEPPER: So, thank God Andrew and Kelly made it out of the fire. I was serio worried for a minute. And I wouldn't have been able to go on had they not made it. I absolutely LOVE this couple together.

MICHELLE: Well out of the fire and into the frying pan!! It was great that Andy was able to conquer his demons and he and Kelly were able to move on a build a life together. BUT, what about that surprise that puts a little wrench in the "calm" factor?!?

PEPPER: I know! I about died. Things are going along just great with Kelly and her boys in NYC while Andrew films - and then BAM!! Shit starts to get real.

MICHELLE: So good though. I loved everything that happened.

I've often wondered what it would be like to be married to someone famous- Chris Pratt for example-

and Kelly and Andy's story is a lot of what I imagine.

PEPPER: I honestly don't think I could handle it. Even if it was David:

MICHELLE: Oh Dear God...

Anyway, it can't be easy being part of a couple where one half is super famous and everyone wants a piece of him. I mean can you imagine your hubby being this super hot guy all these unknown chicks want to bone?? I'd be one jealous lady.

PEPPER: Like I said, I just couldn't do it.

MICHELLE: But that's why Kelly is so amazing. She keeps it cool - she's classy like that.

So, one thing I love about this book is the amount of love between the two characters. Don't worry- there is some major drama and conflict and it's not always clear why or how it's happening. But at the heart of it all, Kelly and Andrew LOVE each other. You actually experience their love for one another in BeckAnd's writing. Which I think is pretty cool.

PEPPER: I agree! It totally makes you feel like this could actually happen and work! Like Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso:

There IS major drama that happens and it's all sorts of cray, but it's SO hugging good. This was definitely one of my favorite sequels of all time. It wasn't just a huge love-fest. I mean, the way they are as a couple makes your pants fall off. But, I was really pumped with how BeckAnd put more drama into place, so you weren't just reading the rest of the happily ever after. Does that make sense?

MICHELLE: Totally! Because we all know love stories are not 100% HEA after the initial HEA. There's always going to be drama in the mix!

I love this book, love this series and love this author. You just need to read it. BeckAnd's writing is amazing and you will fall in love with these characters. Promise.

PEPPER: YES! And also, just another mention. BeckAnd is literally one of the nicest people we have met. She's down to earth and so great to talk with. We will forever be serious BeckAnd fangirls for life!!

Book review: 4 stars
This is the kind of books I love, Trouble Me is the story after Andrew and Kelly’s HEA in Fix Me (Read my review here ). It’s about how Andrew and Kelly are growing as a couple, how he is adapting to the family dynamics with Beau and Hunter and how Kelly is adapting to “Andy”’s celebrity life. Their life is almost perfect. Almost! The amount of drama in this book was just perfect, because there are parts when you really think things are going down, and you get so worried about them, but Beck is known for loving HEA, so you’ll read a beautiful happy ending for Andrew and Kelly.

What I loved about this book: ANDREW’S POV! Woohoo! I wished this when I was reading Fix Me, and Beck made me so happy with his chapters. I loved reading how much he loves Kelly, her kids and his new life, his private life anyway, because his career is still amazing, he is still a successful actor with lots and lots of contracts. I really enjoyed his interactions with his agent, his bodyguard - Tucker was amazing with all of them, I’m in love <3 - and of course, Kelly’s boys. He protected them, loved them but never for one second wanted to replace their father - RIP Peter -

I still think Kelly is amazing, and after reading the end of this book, I think of her as a hero! She does everything to protect her family and her relationship with Andrew. She had to go through a lot in this book - I wanted to hug her most of the time -, and sadly she was a little naive until the very end of the book, but IMHO, I think she did great at the end: GO GIRL!

If you didn't have the chance to read Fix Me, go, read it now and then read Trouble Me, because these books are amazing, easy to read, easy to love and most of all, the perfect amount of drama, comedy and romance.
100% recommended.

Beck's Andrew is Robert Pattison

I did enjoy the first instalment a lot more and there were long chunks of this book that made me feel that this sequel was completely unnecessary. It was quite trite and banal at times, but also sweet enough to continue. Then the mildly suspenseful plot towards the end seemed thrown in as an after thought and it was very predictable. Otherwise, quite boring, and I was still contemplating DNF at around the 70% mark, but then it picked up a bit around there till the end. I already have the third book, but it will have to join the really long TBR queue.

Enjoyed this one. You should read book one (Fix you), as it shows just how this couple came to be together and how much they went through to get where they are. It's a good read. High in suspense and sweet moments, low in the sexy scenes. Overall, not bad read at all. Kept me entertained.

Received a copy in exchange for an honest review

“And so here she stands, in her soft, satin gown, the clean lines hugging her waist and falling to the ground, trailing out behind her. It’s simple and purely sexy.”

Four stars. This is a sequel to the first book, and I liked this follow up. I didn’t fall in love but it was a cute, but emotional story.

It’s a life that’s equal parts amazing and amusing, less glamorous than you might expect, and spiked with very real fears no amount of stardom can overcome.

Will Andrew and Kelly be torn apart, or will they help each other stay strong at their broken places?

This book picks up 18 months after the first book Fix You, Andrew and Kelly have managed to make their way through their problems. Andy’s star status is at the top level now and his pushy manager is making sure he takes advantage of all offers that comes his way. While they are maneuvering their way through their relationship there are of course ups and downs and an almost Fatal Attraction moment. I don’t want to give too much away but this story was exciting if not fun. I enjoyed it!

This is a sequel to FIX YOU, which I also read. It continues Kelly and Andrew's story, taking it farther into their relationship. There's a bit of a suspense going on. The last quarter or so of the book, the tension and suspense heat up. It was great. I enjoyed it. Probably wouldn't enjoy it as much if you hadn't read Fix You first.
