Rate this book
It’s the winter of 1992, and Thomas Renton, youthful Vice President of award winning Motivation UK, is personally and professionally becalmed, until a whirlwind of longing, soul searching and challenging new characters flings him onto a painful and mystical journey into uncharted waters. A glittering career, new Porsche, executive house, loyal girlfriend and supportive best friend are suddenly no longer enough.

A weekend self-development course suckers Thomas into revealing a previously unacknowledged inner emptiness. When a deeply alluring Celia appears on his relationship radar, the ensuing chase predictably fills the void, but this time something new burrows into the darkest recesses of his subconscious and prepares to explode with shattering consequences.

As his relationship with Celia develops into a battle between damaged souls, Thomas accepts the help of mysterious self-styled guru Manfred offering happiness through a process of modifying key memories. Thomas declines into melancholy and introspection as Manfred relentlessly tears through the hidden turmoil of his childhood in search of the Main Event that created the void.

Thomas’s relationship with Celia reaches its inevitable denouement detonating the explosive subconscious rupture that Manfred needs to do his work. In the early hours and on the edge of sanity, Thomas seeks out the only person who can possibly help. As the Main Event finally gives up its secrets, Thomas gets a tantalising glimpse of a different reality.

Struggling to differentiate between fact and fantasy, Thomas is faced with coming to terms with the loss of old certainties and the challenge of embracing the new reality he now faces.
