Summary (from Goodreads):

Bestselling author Ashlyn Macnamara, hailed by Jennifer McQuiston as “a born storyteller,” introduces the strapping, audacious outlaws of the Bastard Brotherhood in this enchanting tale of forbidden love between supposedly sworn enemies.

Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Now, with her father’s life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands.

Ever since his father’s death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and—by the three gods—it won’t be the last. But after taking one look into Calista’s smoldering gray eyes, Torch discovers a passion nobler than retribution. He will fulfill his destiny and take her from the usurper king, even in his weakened state. For with Calista’s love, no man has ever felt more powerful.

What I Liked:

I feel like such an early bird reviewer right now! This book publishes in exactly two months, and so I apologize to the publisher for posting a full review so early. I casually started this book in-between the Young Adult novels I was supposed to be reading, and I was sucked in this story. Destined for a King was an extremely well-written fantasy romance story, and just what I needed!

Calista Thorne has been promised to King Magnus Vandal for years, thanks to negotiations between her father and the king. Her father is lord of Blackbriar Keep, a small holding that must rely on the strength of its neighbors for protection. Which is how the warrior Torch of the Bastard Brotherhood is able to claim the Keep easily, with his Brotherhood. Calista manages to shoot Torch while the siege is taking place, but the injury isn't enough to stop Torch. He becomes lord of the keep, and he claims her hand in marriage. Calista doesn't know everything at first, but Torch has a plan, a plan that involves marrying her and taking revenge on King Magnus, who took something from Torch long ago. But Torch will come to earn that his revenge isn't all that he wants - he wants Calista to love him as well.

Have I professed my love for fantasy novels enough on this blog already? Seriously, fantasy is my favorite genre. I love Young Adult fantasy, but I also really love adult fantasy (specifically, adult fantasy romance). Books like Through a Dark Mist by Marsha Canham, The Winter King by C.L. Wilson, and A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet are among my favorites. I think I need to add Destined for a King to that list!

This book is told from Calista and Torch's alternating POVs, in third person. The story starts with the siege of the Keep, and within one or two pages, Calista shoots Torch with a deadly arrow. Torch claims the Keep and Calista as his bride, injury notwithstanding, but then collapses. Calista is charged with nursing him back to health, or her father will never leave the dungeon cell he is placed in. And so the physicking begins. Torch's wound is not bad, but he catches a fever, and the healing processes takes days.

I do like how the author uses the injury and fever to draw the pair closer together. Calista obviously doesn't want to be forced to marry the brute that just took over her home. But she can't help but notice how handsome he is, how much more gentle he is now that he is vulnerable. She's very attracted to him, but she's not stupid. Torch is also very attracted to his healer and future bride, but he's bent on seducing her. She's part of his plan, but he also wants her to want him. He refuses to force her into anything, as he wants a willing bride.

Hate-to-love romances are often my favorite, and you could probably categorize this story's romance as hate-to-love. There is so much banter and barbs and smart talk between Calista and Torch. Calista may be a bit younger and definitely more innocent, but she goes toe-to-toe with Torch. I love it!

Torch has a necklace with a Scrying Stone, that lets him see briefly into the future, or even the present. For a long time, the Stone has been showing him glimpses of Calista, so when he storms the Keep, he knows that they will marry. So he is set on seducing her. Calista, while seduced, wants a choice. I liked seeing this push and pull. Their relationship didn't seem Stockholm-Syndrome-y (or whatever the equivalent is, in this scenario), and I saw them genuinely falling for each other.

These two are seriously fiery together! Calista is a maiden who was supposed to marry King Magnus, and at first she doesn't want to get married to Torch, and doesn't want him to touch her. But the more he reveals, and the more he talks to her, the more convinced she is of who he really is (and who King Magnus isn't - a true king). Calista and Torch share some really steamy moments from the start, and this book has plenty of them throughout the story. But I liked that their relationship wasn't just steamy passion and lust. Calista has insecurities, Torch has mistrust towards her, but they learned and are learning to know each other. I also like that the marriage is about halfway through the book, so the couple really has to spend time getting to know each other even more, as husband and wife.

I adore these two. Calista is innocent yet mouthy and hates taking orders from Torch. Torch is a bit arrogant and wicked and loves issuing orders. He is fiercely protective and sooo alpha, and Calista is one of those quiet kick butt ladies. Such fun characters! And such a great pair.

This is a fantasy novel, and like any good fantasy novel, there is a war coming, and a clash between leaders. King Magnus isn't who he seems, and Torch is determined to have his revenge on King Magnus. Calista, who once might have defended King Magnus, wants to see him removed. The pair have their work cut out for them, with the Brotherhood. I liked the world-building, the setting, and the premise of the story!

This is part of a series, and the ending of this book really shows that! It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there are many aspects that are not wrapped up, and I couldn't help but get a little frustrated by the lack of pages at the end! Torch's sister Jerrah has gotten herself into a certain situation, and Torch's commander Kestrel has gone to rescue her. So! The next book is likely to follow Jerrah and Kestrel (Kestrel is a dude, by the way. I love the name!). Which makes me happy (because clearly there is something happening there) but also sad (because I adore Calista and Torch - the premise of this book, in terms of the romance, is what hooked me!).

What I Did Not Like:

Nothing specific? This was a wonderful and sometimes adorable and sweet story. And steamy too. I guess the one thing I would have wanted was for this series to be a continual story series and not a companion series. It's a two-edged sword; on the one hand, I love that we'll get to see Jerrah and Kestrel's story. On the other hand, I just do not think that Calista and Torch's story is over. And I also like them a lot. The summary of this book drew me in, with the whole "I'm taking over the Keep and taking you as my bridge" kind of thing. I'll miss Calista and Torch, even if they make cameo appearances in the next book!

Would I Recommend It:

If you like adult fantasy romance, I highly recommend this book! I was a tiny bit surprised when I liked it, simply because I've read one of the author's historical romance novels (I love HR novels), but didn't totally love it (it was okay). I had a better feeling about this book - and I was right! It's a wonderful fantasy story with a steamy and passionate romance. Win!

Rating:

4.5 stars. I hesitate to round down to 4 stars, and I may change my rating in the future. For now, this book gets 4 stars. But I absolutely loved it, and it's going to end up in my favorites of 2016 list!

If only the middle hadn’t dragged so much

Destined for a King grabbed and kept my attention with the cover and blurb. There’s nothing more appealing to me than a strong and feisty heroine taking up arms to protect her home and family. Bring in a fearsome warrior with plans for revenge that gets distracted by love, and I’m definitely keen. Unfortunately, the promise didn’t live up to my expectations. The strong and feisty heroine was a bit wish washy and the fearsome warrior seemed to fumble at every challenge he faced.

The beginning did grab my attention and I was interested in working out what was what and who was who. The ending was a little more exciting but it felt like the battle scenes were skimmed over and too many questions/issues were “fixed” and just fell into place. I think the author may have miscalculated (not sure if that’s the right word) where we as readers would want more details. For me, I want to see the fight scenes, experience the anguish of losing a home, feel the desperation of knowing a loved one is at risk. A fantasy romance needs passion and intrigue, but the details need to be fleshed out in the exciting times, not at the sickbed or when posturing males are comparing the size of their swords.

Maybe, I’m judging it too harshly as it’s the first in the series with definite room for growth. I just felt that it was lacking a little oomph. The middle felt tedious, too descriptive and boring. I struggled to stay motivated to keep reading. It wasn’t all bad, and I managed to like a few of the characters, but unfortunately I was disappointed and left wanting more. I liked it, but that’s it.

5 - "Let me prove my worth to you..." Stars!

I love the feeling I get when I read a book that is the beginning of a series, and it exceeds all and any expectations I had for it prior to starting reading.

Destined for a King definitely falls into that category, because apart from an intriguing synopsis I really didn’t know what to expect. And Ashlyn Macnamara can put one hell of a story together. Having not read/seen anything of the Game of Thrones series I cannot really compare it to that with any real factual basis, but the descriptions that the author used for the places and people involved in this story, made me think of it nonetheless.

"I’ve never yet forced a woman, and I do not intend to begin with you… But I will have my heir."

So what’s a girl to do, when her home is stormed and overrun by a group of men known as The Bastard Brotherhood… Well if you are Calista Thorne, you shoot their leader; Torch, with a poisoned arrow, and then subsequently spend your days nursing him back to health, because the rest of his men are holding your father and your home under their control. But as the book progresses, their relationship changes from one of enemies, to more of a begrudging respect for each other. And as Calista gets to know the rather rugged Torch, she realizes there is more to this man’s story than the legends and rumors have told. Especially when he announces that he intends to take her for his wife, in lieu of the King, whom she has already been promised too.

"You know me truly. And I’ve left too many things unsaid… I don’t know what bought you to me; I’ve not met your match in bravery, in fortitude, in strength. Every day, I will thank the gods for this gift…"

It is only a matter of time before the King’s forces arrive at Blackbriar Keep to exact revenge for Torch’s taking of Calista and the Keep, but in the interim the growing attraction between them deepens, and the story gives you a more in depth look at a few of the secondary characters. It doesn’t take long to work out that there is an awful lot more to Torch and his men than, looting and pillaging everything in their path, and as secrets are revealed a complex and intricate plot emerges from it.

"You are all that is beautiful."

I loved this pair together, bearing in mind their beginnings, the struggle to trust each other bears a heavy relevance on their relationship as the book develops, but I really liked that the author made Torch the more vulnerable of the pair, even with all the obstacles in their way, they came together as a team really well, the sexy-times were well written, and the emotional connection between them built sweetly, and steadily with Torch’s happy-go-lucky charm, and Calista’s independent attitude.

I hope that there isn’t too long of a wait for the next book in the series, Claimed by the Commander is due for release in 2017, according to the author’s website, but no firm date is confirmed. This is a series where you will need to keep previous events very much in the forefront of your mind, so I hope it’s early rather than latter 2017. I am pleased to see that the author is giving each book over to a different couple as well, but developing the Bastard Brotherhood story in general as things progress with each pairing. If you a looking for something a little different, then I cannot recommend Destined for a King highly enough.

'Destined for a King' by Ashlyn Macnamara is book one in the "The Bastard Brotherhood" series.
This is the story of Calista Thorne and Torch.
Torch has come to overtake Calista father's keep and take her as his bride. Torch has a secret to his identity and is trying to get back what should have been his. Calista was trying to help her father secure the keep when she took to hit Torch with and arrow...but they were overcome but Torch and his men. So to keep her father safe she was to heal Torch which she does. We watch the story unfold of Calista trying to deal with the information she is learning about Torch. Torch is trying to learn to trust Calista and still move forward with his plan to get back what should have been his. Both Calista and Torch were headstrong people but overcome mistrust to become a great couple that I enjoyed seeing them come together.

Destined for a King is a fabulous start to a new series.

Calista Throne is promised to become the bride of the King.

When her home is under sedge she takes up arms herself and shoots the leader of the attacking force with a poison arrow. She is offered a choice to save Torch, the rebel leader, or her father will share in his fate. Living and caring for Torch, Calista sees more than she should. That the political climate isn’t quite what she thought and Torch just might be on the side of right.

Destiny, true love and learning to trust all come into play when Torch and Calista meet but what I enjoyed most about this story was the strength Calista shows when faced with unsurmountable odds. Calista takes up arms, she faces down foes and isn’t worried about bucking the system to be on the side of right.

Torch initially thinks Calista as a prize to take away from the King but quickly she captures the warriors heart.

Marvelous storytelling, Macnamara has penned a tale that has me coming back for more.

This was a great story of claiming what is yours in so many ways. Torch is trying to reclaim his throne and claim the heart of his woman. There was a great balance of action, romance, and mystery throughout the book. Torch and Calista have such faith and loyalty to one another, even when placed in life or death situations (which happens pretty often). There were only 2 sex scenes, but boy, were they HOT. There was a lot of fighting and strategy going on. The battles were detailed and intense. I'm definitely looking forward to the next part of this story.

Destiny For A King is a fantasy themed romance, although in many moments it almost felt like a historical themed romance at the same time so I feel like this would suit many HR fans as well even if your not huge on the fantasy themes. In Destined For A King, our heroine Calista is betrothed to the King. But her parent's plans for her marriage change, when their home is attacked and overrun by the enemy of the King, Torch. Torch is fighting not just for freedom and a better life, but to regain what his family lost and reclaim the throne that is rightfully is. Calista is in his future, he is led by a precious stone that hasn't led him wrong.

In this story we have two people that find love and destiny. What I really loved about this story was how strong the women are in this story. Our main heroine can use a bow to help fight when she can. But we also have other side characters that fight along side their men. And boy I loved that aspect, seeing how strong and passionate they can be. The romance that develops between Torch and Calista is priceless. I honestly couldn't get enough of their bantering, the sexy times and the way they grow for each other. The chemistry between them is powerful and quite intoxicating at times. I just couldn't put this book down and it had everything I look for in a romance. A full belly satisfying romance that is enchanting and a fantasy romance every reader will fall head heels in love with!!

Destined for a King is the story of two very strong characters, a world in which the king is the ultimate ruler, and where there is no room for mistakes...

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Destined for a King is set in a fantasy world, that has a little bit of a medieval feel to it. There is magic, and there is a war on the horizon. This war is brought literally into Calista's front yard, when Torch and his Bastard Brotherhood take the fort under siege. Torch is badly hurt, though, and Calista has to nurse him back to health, or her father will not only stay in prison, but be executed. Torch doesn't really care that Calista has been promised to the king, as he has seen her in a vision, and he knows that they will be together.

I was immediately swept into the midst of the story of Destined for a King, and the characters were so well done I wanted to stay in this hostile and slightly scary world. I also loved that the women held an important place in this world, Calista even knew how to use a bow and arrow to try to defend her home against intruders. She also knew how to use medicinal plants in order to heal, and her knowledge is very important to the story both in this book, and, I am guessing in the future books of this series.

Macnamara managed to paint a very colorful, albeit a bit dark, world in Destined for a King, and her characters came to life in a way that made me think I could reach into my kindle and touch them. There is mystery, suspense, betrayal, usurpers, excitement and romance galore, so readers get the full array of emotions going while entering the story and taking part in Calista and Torch's adventure.

Written in third person, past tense, from Calista's and Torch's perspectives, but with a lot of dialogues to keep the readers on their toes, Destined for a King made me feel like I had spent a while in a completely different space, where danger lurked, but salvation was possible anyway. If you're a fantasy fan, or a romance fan, or a mystery fan - this book is for you!

Fave Quotes - (un)Conventional Bookviews

With a spate of impatience, she jerked the sheet back from his legs - only to drop it as if it had suddenly caught fire. Her cheeks flamed. owl had removed even his lord's smallcothes. As an unmarried woman, she shouldn't have to contend with a naked man, especially not one so wholly masculine. Even out cold, his presence on her mattress made her feel somehow vulnerable.

The girl turned her head to the side and eyed the vial. "What's in it?"
"Elixir of poppy. For pain. Don't take too much, though. I don't have any more left, and we may be needing it before he's healthy again." A smug sort of satisfaction rang through that statement. It portended as much ill as her smile had.

I've given this a C- at AAR.

Destined for a King is the first book in a new series from Ashyln Macnamara, which, at the time I picked it for review, I thought was a standalone novel.  I’ve since seen that it has been labelled book one of the Bastard Brotherhood series, but potential readers need to be aware that this is not a self-contained story and is, I assume, going to be continued in subsequent books.

The story opens in the middle of the battle for Blackbriar Keep, as Calista Thorne, dressed as a boy, watches the fight from the battlements of the castle, frustratingly unable to take part it its defence as she has run out of arrows.  They are being overrun by the band of brigands known as the Bastard Brotherhood, under the command of their formidable leader, Torch, a man whose reputation for ruthless cruelty is widely known and feared.  Determined not to give up without a fight, Calista grabs an arrow from a quiver belonging to a dead soldier, sights the enemy leader and shoots him in the thigh.

By this time, however, the battle is all but lost, the Keep is taken, and Torch even goes so far as to salute the man that shot him.  It’s not until shortly afterwards that he realises who that person really is, and makes known his plan to marry Calista in order to ensure the loyalty of Lord Thorne and his people.  But Calista is promised to King Magnus – and it soon becomes clear that there is more at work than a simple desire on Torch’s part to thumb his nose at the king.  He has visions which show him Calista at his side and knows she is important to his future – and it doesn’t hurt that by marrying her, he will draw Magnus out so that he can confront him once and for all and reclaim what is rightfully his.

But not long after his victory, Torch collapses, and Calista realises that the arrow she shot him with must have been poisoned.  With Torch out of action, his second-in-command, Kestrel, takes charge and imprisons Lord Thorne, threatening to kill him if Calista doesn’t heal Torch.  Fearful for her father’s life, Calista cares for her enemy, surprised that he has not ordered a mass slaughter of everyone who fought against him.  As their enforced proximity continues, she starts to see that there is more to Torch than his reputation would indicate;  he is fair-minded and honourable, and even though Calista doesn’t want to be forced to marry the man that invaded her home, she isn’t completely averse to the seduction he seems intent upon.

Because she has noticed that Torch is hot. ;-)

The story is basically a somewhat watered down version of the old “good-guy outlaw must defeat baddie usurper and reclaim his rightful place” yarn – which is fine, but the whole thing lacks cohesion and I was left with the impression of a book suffering from not really knowing what it’s supposed to be.

The cover, which looks like the sort of thing you’d find on a medieval romance, is eye-catching and I was intrigued by that, as Ms. Macnamara has made a name for herself so far writing romances set in the nineteenth century. The book blurb, however, quickly told me this wasn’t a medieval, as there were no references to any historical figures or events, so I realised it was a fantasy romance with a faux-medieval setting. Ultimately however, the book doesn’t deliver on any of those things. It’s not very fantastical, the romance is almost non-existent (there is shagging, yes, but not much actual romance) and the setting is extremely nondescript. In fact, I found it hard to anchor myself throughout the book. While I suppose that when an author is setting out to create an imaginary world, the reader is bound to feel that way to begin with, I felt exactly the same when I’d finished. Sure, I can picture a medieval stronghold in my mind’s eye, but other than that, I have no idea what this world looks like, feels like or sounds like. I have no idea about the people who live there, other than that they fight with swords, bows and arrows and trebuchets or that they heal using herbs. There are mentions of Freeholds, ice palaces, some substance called Adamant which is the strongest thing known to man, a race called the Avestari who can talk to horses – but these all felt like they were just cool-sounding words that were thrown out here and there to remind readers that “hey, we’re not in Kansas (or Ye Olde England) any more”. And the fantasy aspect is downright disappointing. There’s an attempt to introduce an element of mysticism – the Sons of the Earth, is some sort of quasi-religious order; Torch possesses a vision-inducing scrying-stone and there are Three Gods – but it’s all very amateurish.

I hesitate to describe the relationship between Callista and Torch as a romance, because it really isn’t. I think it’s supposed to be a kind of enemies-to-lovers thing, but there is hardly any enmity between them, so that doesn’t work. She lusts after him even when he’s wounded, but tells herself those are not appropriate thoughts to be having. He flirts with her a bit once he starts to recover… and then pulls what I suppose is the faux-medieval equivalent of “come up and see my etchings” by telling her that he needs her to sleep with him – just sleep, that is – in order to enhance the power of the visions he is shown by the stone. Which prove to be so traumatic, they just HAVE to have sex. And because this happens around a third of the way into the book, I was left asking myself if there was anywhere left for this relationship to go.

And unfortunately, both Calista and Torch are little more than cardboard cut-outs. He’s on a quest to reclaim his birthright and she’s a warrior maiden of sorts, but they’re bland and rather flat. Torch had the potential to be an interesting hero; we get some of his backstory early on when he remembers fleeing danger with his mother when he was a little boy, but we learn nothing about what happened between then and now, nothing about his formative years or how he survived; and the lack of background made it very hard to get a handle on him.

I’m sorry to say that Destined for a King is a bit of a mess. It’s as though the author wanted to write a medieval romance without the need to do any research into the time period, or a fantasy without giving any real thought to how she was going to bring the world she was creating to life for her readers. As I said at the beginning of this review, this is obviously going to be the sort of series in which books have to be read in order for it all to make sense, and I wish I’d known that at the outset. Perhaps some questions will be answered and gaps filled in in later books, but ultimately, Destined for a King wasn’t strong enough to make me want to stick around to find out.

A clash of a sword with a dash of romance. What more could I ask for? Historical romance as mentioned countless times in my reviews, are my favorite type of genre. Something about the glance in to the past really piques my curiosity and the journey into the would-have-been really gets my wheels turning. This could be partly due to my inclination towards historical facts. Regency romance is the genre we are mostly given with thus when I tumble across book of ages before that I really devour them in one sitting.

This book was of no difference. Set during the Medieval eras, the story takes us on a twisted journey filled with romance and the knights and lords but with the added secret ingredient of paranormal to the recipe which makes it much more worthwhile than your normal HR. What really caught my interest in the book was the strength of our heroine. She does not take any "crap" from literally anyone. If she sets her mind on it, she follows through with it. Her undying loyalty to her husband and the love she bears for him makes her stronger and unlike other heroines who stagger under the romance and continue making mistake upon mistake she further strengthens her resolve ans does he utmost to help him.

In truth the paranormal and fantasy element actually left me slightly confused, still I'm willing to brave myself to the rest of the series. I sincerely hope we can get an appropriate conclusion for the series very soon.

Synopsis (Barnes&Noble)

For with Calista’s love, no man has ever felt more powerful. she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights.

I really liked this book a lot. Granted, it is a bit different from my usual diet of YA…that being fantasy, some sci-fi interjection, maybe some dystopia; but definitely some magic. Destined for a King is a historical romance with a mix of intrigue, suspense and adventure with a smidge of sorcery. There are no faeries nor dragons…just a good love story with castles, keeps, battles, fair maidens and would be heroes. It takes place in a nameless far flung Medieval place inhabited by Strongholders and Freeholders. Obviously, it was better to be one of the Strongholders. You had land, a keep and a title that entitles you. Freeholders, on the other hand, were dependent upon and subjected to the whims of the Strongholders. So the stage is set for a conflict. And what a conflict it is! I was thrown into the midst of a very tense, albeit, brief battle with the very first paragraph. In comes Torch, tall, muscular and with reddish brown hair who, literally, takes over Blackbrair keep and claims Calista as his bride. All of this in the first couple of chapters. He is strong and purpose driven; so much so that he is at times blinded to what is truly important. Calista is the daughter of Belwin and Amara Thorne, Lord and Lady of Blackbrair. She is also betrothed to King Magnus…an arranged marriage of alliance for the protection of Blackbrair. Calista is awakening as a woman. She is headstrong and independent...much like her mother in many ways.

"You are destined for a king. Make sure you remember that always.” Amara Thorne

“You I recall. You haunt my dreams. You I cannot get out of my head.”
“I took this keep because it was the easiest of the Strongholds to take. But because of a stone, I’ve decided to keep you.” ~Torch

I loved the dialect of a mix of olde English with a hint of Scottish. This, with the smattering of mild cursing like “by the gods”, “by the faceless one” and “in the name of the three” brought colour to the page. Even the vocabulary grabbed me...lascivious and limned. Even though I got the gist from the sentence I was compelled to look them up. The smoldering love passages between Torch and Calista were meltingly swooning with me whispering for more. The descriptively detailed and intense battle scenes were captivatingly engaging. I felt I was in the very throws of it all. I could hear the whoosh of the arrows flying towards their mark. I flinched with each thrust of the sword. I felt the reverberations with the clash of metal against metal. I found myself reading so fast that I would have to go back and reread passages of both.

There did seem to be a lull about a little more than half way. Now that I think about it, it was a time when the characters became more developed and defined, in particular, Brother Tancrid (is he bad or good?), Tamsin, Hawk, Calista’s parents and even Owl. Amara has her own past to tell and it helps drive this story. She, too, is a strong minded and independent woman who chose her own path. Each of these characters become pivotal further on in the story. We don't know much about Kestrel, Torche’s trusted first in command, Wolf, or even Griffin and Jerrah, Torch’s brother and sister. So there is much to speculate here. Torch and Calista became more complex and multi dimensional going beyond the verbal innuendos and sarcasm. The lives of everyone is in a state of constant turmoil and it begins to takes its toll. The black cloud of impending doom and the wrath of Magnus is looming ever closer. The last three chapters were packed full of action, intrigue, twists and turns that it was exploding. I finished the book and reread the last three chapters several times. I wanted to be sure that I got it all. I didn't want to miss a single thing. It may be important later on; but mostly, I think, I reread those chapters because I didn't want the story to end. I still had questions. There are so many loose ends that are just left hanging…I hate cliffhangers; but I think I hate loose ends even more. I have sooooo many questions and now I have to wait! And wait I will, a bit impatiently; but I will wait.

4 torched stars. Ah, I wasn't sure how this was going to play out but it was awesome! I enjoyed myself and it only lost a star because it dragged just a tad during the middle of the story. Ashlyn Macnamara did a great job at intertwining history, magical and mystery. I'm pumped for the next book!

Torch is not who he appears to be. He is so much more. I liked him when he was introduced and further grew to adore him as the book progressed. He has a strong sense of honor which always gets me. He's a bit crude and sexual but I find it hilarious since I think he does it for shock value more than anything else. There were moments when he was a complete bastard, but I'm okay with that because if he was perfect I'd be concerned and slightly weirded out.

Calista is one of the bravest heroines I've encountered in a historical story ever! I mean, she was not only dressed as a young guy but fought the enemy overtaking her home instead of running to hide. She's fiercely loyal, protective, compassionate and clever. I enjoyed her and found myself chuckling because some of her reactions were literally what I would do given the situation.

Together Torch and Calista build a love some would kill for and begin to fight for Torch's birth right. The path before them is not one that is smooth but smooth seas never did make a skilled sailor! This book leaves off at a bit of a cliffhanger because it is the first book in the series. There's action, passion, tenderness and sharing of souls so I recommend giving this a little bit different kind of novel a read.

I very much enjoyed this book. It starts as a familiar-feeling medieval historical romance, but the magical elements - old, Celtic-style earth magic - continue to build throughout. Much promise for the ensuing chapters in this saga, with compelling secondary characters. Looking forward to the next one!

Destined for a King is a mix of medieval and fantasy romance, leaning more toward the historical side that fantasy. A battle for the kingdom between the rightful king and a usurper is sprinkled with premonitory visions and a starcrossed romance in this first installment of the Bastard Brotherhood series.

Josse Vandal, known as Torch, has banded together a group of common marauders to help him carry out revenge against the man who stole his birthright. Torch begins the story as a magnificent warrior who storms Blackbriar Keep and takes over with little effort. Unlike other conquerors, however, Torch treats the people of Blackbriar with honor, respect and leniency. But the new lord has taken the keep for dual purposes, not only to thumb his nose at the usurper, but also to find the woman who he believes is his destiny. Unfortunately said woman's first act upon seeing Torch is to shoot him with a poisoned arrow. At that point, Torch's magnificence in battle starts going downhill. I liked Torch as a person... and liked the conviction he had for his cause. He was also a playful and fun flirt, and I liked seeing him tease the heroine. However as a hero, I would have liked Torch to be more capable. He seemed to blunder about too much to carry off the noble bearing that he will need to win his quest.

Calista Thorne is not a meek and mild lady of the keep. When trouble came calling, she dressed in leathers and picked up a crossbow to help defend her keep. Having been told by her mother that she was destined for a king, Calista fights her attraction toward the warrior who has taken Blackbriar. Though when Torch's naked form inspired lustful thoughts as she nursed him back to health, Calista began to think that the devil she knew might be a better choice than the king to whom she was betrothed. I didn't have feelings one way or the other for Calista. I think we needed more backstory for her as I felt like we didn't get to know her very well... she didn't become interesting for me until she was injured during the second battle for Blackbriar Keep.

While I felt like this story had good bones, the execution was lacking for me. A strong battle opening held promise, but the rest of the story did not measure up to the opening chapter. I was hoping to be drawn into the plot and Torch's crusade, but felt wholly disconnected from the characters and events. After that first chapter, the wrong parts of the story got bogged down with details and I would find myself skimming to get back to the action. Without the emotional connection, I was not invested in the romantic relationship - it felt forced and lacking in chemistry. For a couple that is supposed to be destined, I would have liked to see more of a grand passion between the two. As a romantic fantasy, I would have also liked to have more world building and magical aspects. Torch's story is not complete, so I hope that future installments expound on the world and magical abilities.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 2 stars/ 3 flames. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled.

Destined for a King was a book that came highly recommended by Alyssa at The Eater of Books. I was eager to pick this one up, especially because it's a fantasy romance. It turned out to be an entertaining book full of romance, and though I was a bit taken aback by the fact that the story wasn't wrapped up here, I am eager to pick up the next books in the series when they release.

Destined for a King tells the story of Calista and Torch, two characters that are utterly enchanting. I fell in love with both of them so easily, especially Calista. As a daughter of the Blackbriar Keep, she has been promised to King Magnus, until Torch comes along and demands her hand in marriage. Calista was a really fierce heroine. In the opening scenes of the book, she shoots the hero, Torch, dressed as a guy. She's definitely tough, but I loved that she was also gentle and sweet too. She had an innocence to her that made her different from other typical fiesty and fiery heroines. I loved that she was so kind and loyal. For most of her life she has known that she would marry King Magnus, but Torch's sudden bursting into her life really puts her through the emotional wringer and it's a delight watching her confusion at the intense attraction she feels for him. I loved that she was the kind of character who wasn't afraid to go into a fight with her head held high. Torch, himself, was a character I adored too. He was arrogant, flirty and entirely too charming for words. It's really hard for me to resist heroes who are hell-bent on showing heroines just how good they would be together and Torch was one of those kinds of heroes. We learn a lot about his backstory here and his true role in the kingdom and though not every secret of his was revealed here, I'm excited to see how that particular story line of his progresses in the next book.

Torch and Calista are connected in many ways, but I loved how slow and subtle their romance was. Torch flusters Calista and it's so much fun to watch him get under skin. The attraction and lust was there between them, but I loved even more how they connected outside of the physical aspects of their relationship. The romantic progression was sweet, scorching and swoony and I couldn't get enough of it! Because Destined for a King is a fantasy novel, there's a bit of world building going on. For the most part, I was satisfied with how Ashlyn McNamara went about depicting the world, its history and its foundations, but I'm eager to learn more in the next books. There are magical elements to the story too, that I would have preferred more of that, particularly when it comes to Torch's stone that gives him visions. I thought the balance between the actual plot and the romance was really well-done. The secondary cast here was also pretty fantastic. This is a companion series, so no doubt we'll be seeing lots of the faces we meet here in the future again. I'm particularly intrigued by Torch's brother and sister, as well as Calista's maid. I'm eager to find out what roles they'll play in the future books and in Torch's journey to reaching his goal.

In the end, I was very much satisfied with Destined for a King. It was a blast to read and I especially loved all the romantic elements in the story. Ashlyn McNamara is an author to watch out for with this thrilling and addicting series!

4 stars!

Destined for a King is yet another addition to my Historical Romance (with a Medieval feel to be exact) list of books I loved! I've mentioned how picky I am with the genre because it's my favorite and I can't read books that piss me off when it comes to historical settings and characteristics, this one was such an amazing read and so captivating!

Calista is promised to the King but that doesn't stop her from being a badass as well as a lady too. When one day a gang invades their Keep Calista doesn't hesitate to show them how good she is with a crossbow (one with poisoned arrows too). When she injures their Commander, Torch, his gang known as The Bastard Brotherhood - I just love Brotherhoods! - imprisons her father and force her to nurse him back to health. If Torch dies, her father dies. But there is more to Torch than just the head of a gang, he's on a mission and it involves the King; all the more reason for him to go a step further and take her from the King that has usurped the throne.

Destined for a King is a strong, well built book that reminded me of Game of Thrones with just a touch of magic; there's an amazing depth to the story, I was actually flipping pages like crazy and it combines Historical with Fantasy beautifully. There's more historical than Fantasy - don't want to spoil the Fantasy genre of the book but it seeps into the story so beautifully and it makes it so well put together!

Calista and Torch's romance develops gradually; there's no insta love, no love triangle, in fact the romance happens while the background story of this world takes shape and slowly it becomes another part of the story that fortunately doesn't overshadow the other genres. Historical, Fantasy or Romance, this book covers all three genres without overshadowing any of them, I was hooked from the first page and I'll be waiting for the next one!

**I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

I liked this book, it was nice change of pace from your typical HR.

Torch and Calista were both likable characters and I liked the progression of their relationship.

The book was well written, the story flowed nicely, the love scenes were warm and the story was interesting. The reason I only gave the book 4 stars was because I wanted more information. I don't feel like there was enough backstory to support the book - for instance; how was the brotherhood formed? What is the name of the country that they are in? When in time did this take place? Not knowing little details like that diminished the story for me.

I would recommend this book and I am looking forward to more books in the series.

ARC Received for an Honest Review!!

I am really sorry to say Destined for a King did not come together as a cohesive storyline or plot. The Beginning of the story just starst with no build up to characters or character development. There is little to no backstory. I really hate to say this but the writing seems juvenile at times. The story needs a strong editor to get the correct flow going and make the transitions from scene to scene more cohesive!! I am sorry this was a struggle to read. I gave it two stars because the copy I have plainly states it is and Unedited version and I have taken that in to account.

It was a good read. Lot's of plot twists and turns. It sometimes got a tad confusing to keep up with it.

I liked Calista she was indeed what every heroine should be strong and independent yet even stronger with the hero by her side.

Torch is a man on a mission. He is strong, sexy and destined to greatness. And he too is strong with his heroine by his side.

It seems like this one is only the beginning of a huge journey.

Destined For a King is the first book in the 'Bastard Brotherhood' series by Ashlyn Macnamara.

This is the story of Calista Thorne, daughter of the Lord of Blackbriar Keep. She has been promised to the King, Magnus, although she had no say in the matter. Before he has chance to claim her, her ancestral home comes under attack by Torch, and his Bastard Brotherhood. Despite being a 'Lady' and being promised in marriage, Calista quickly dons armour and is ready to help defend the keep. She manages to shoot an arrow into Torch's thigh, although it doesn't stop him and his men taking over her home.

Torch believes that he is the rightful King to the throne, and that Magnus killed his father and would have killed Torch as well if his mother hadn't spirited him away to safety. Over the years it has been his only goal, to take the throne from the usurper and gain his revenge. Taking Blackbriar keep is his first move towards that goal despite the defences of the place being slim after they break through the gates. No sooner do they take over the place, than Torch falls seriously ill. He orders Calista's father to be taken into the cells, and whatever fate befalls Torch will also befall her father. In other words, if Torch dies, so does Calista's father. Calista is a healer and it's her place to nurse Torch to health. That is what brings the two of them to spend time together and for Calista to find out who Torch believes he is, and his ultimate goal. She also finds out that he fully intends to marry her. Not because of love, although he does have a healthy lust towards her, but because thanks to a stone he has, he has seen that Calista is to be his bride, and is all part and parcel of his destiny to becoming the rightful king. She doesn't know if she believes but thanks to a joint vision sent by the stone to both of them in a dream, she soon realises the truth.

Will she marry Torch, will he be able to enforce the defences of the keep before Magnus sends his huge army to take back the keep and rescue the woman promised to him. Calista and Torch have a healthy desire for each other, and when things turn passionate the scenes in the book sizzle. Will she even go with the army to her supposed betrothed. How can she if she has feelings for Torch. How can she not, it Torch loses the keep? Will he manage to keep Calista, the keep, and somehow manage to prove that he is the rightful king? How much blood shed will be needed before either side can claim victory?

This was an exciting read which I couldn't read fast enough to find out how it ends. The battle that Torch endures in order to try to gain back his rightful place as King is an enticing story in itself, but add to that the romance with Calista, and the fantasy aspect of the story, and you really have a great book.

My one and only complaint is there was a lack of explanation about where the story is set, the whys and wherefores of their lores, and the different types of people etc. I found the authors website and got all the information I needed, and I think if Ashlyn was to put a section at the start of the book exactly like she has on her website, which explains everything, it would make the book that much more enjoyable. In fact, thinking about it, a prequel book could work really well too, where we can find out all about what happens when Magnus steals the throne etc!

On the whole though I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the next 3 in the series. Book 2 is about Torch's sister, Jerrah, and his Commander, Kestrel. Book 3 is about his brother Griffin. Book 4 is about Wolf, a woman who has been a great help to Torch in the past. I am gathering that throughout all 4 books we will see Torch's story continue as well, which is one of the reasons I can't wait to read the whole series!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for me honest review.

Destined for a King: The Bastard Brotherhood by Ashley Macnamara. What a great beginning to what promises to be an intriguing and utterly fascinating series, "The Bastard Brotherhood". A Fantasy Historical Romance. Doesn't really seem like a fantasy to me, more of a great, epic Historical Romance.
I was simply amazed by this fast paced, heart-pounding, emotionally charged Medieval Historical Romance.

Ms. Macnamara "Introduces the strapping, audacious outlaws of the Bastard Brotherhood in this enchanting tale of forbidden love between supposedly sworn enemies", in this new series, "The Bastard Brotherhood".

Calista Thorne, is a fierce heroine, who faces challenges head on and with pride. Torch, is bastard outlaw, and landkess knight, whose family has been wronged. He is fighting to regain his throne, seek justice and vengeance.

Torch and Calista should be are sworn enemies, or so it seems. But Calista finds Torch strong, and honor bound.
Torch, his younger twin brother and sister, seek their families justice and vengeance for their father's death, have suffered hardship and challenges. They have powerful enemies, the King. Especially if Tirch's true identity is bought to light. They intend to gain support, and place Torch in his rightful place, on the throne that was calliously taken from his family.

Well written with well-developed, captivating and powerful characters. The storyline is unique, intriguing, captivating, emotionally charged, and mesmerizing. What an impressive cast of characters. Yes, I see a most definite, epic tale!
A multifaceted, and complex, tale! I was blown away by the intensity, and the complexity of "Destined For a King". A sweeping tale infused with destiny, danger, passion, sacrifice, pain, a forbidden love, Celtic magic, intrigue, non-stop action and romance. Highly recommended! Fans of Fantasy Romance with a twist of fate, Historical Romance, the promise of true love and the making of a King, will enjoy "Destined for a King".
*This is a hot and steamy story. Not for the faint of heart.*

My only complaint, is the many unanswered questions. While, Calista, Torch, and Blackbriar Keep, comes to a bit of an end, the story is not finished. Sorta of a cliffhanger ending.
Such as...
What happened to Torch and Griffin's sister, who was kidnapped by their enemy? The threat to her was extreme unless Torch complyed with his nemesis demands, which he did not. Does Torch's man get to his sister in time to save her or will she be lost to them all? What happens to the many other cast of characters? I would love to learn more of them.

I anxiously await the next installment of this complex but impressive story... Awesome! !

I am not even sure how to write this review. The captivating cover, the synopsis that gave me the chills and the fact I haven’t read a book like this in forever is exactly why I felt I NEEDED this book. I have been wanting something like this for a while, I haven’t read a historical romance since I was in my 20’s and I never realized how much I missed them. This has a great paranormal twist that just set the bar for me when reading books like this. I love when a HR adds a bit of magic.

The story is about a strong female Calista Thorne who is promised to a corrupt king but the land she lives on is taken over by the dashing Torch who insists that they are meant to be together because he saw it with his stone. I loved everything about these two, they had a few funny moments and I just thought the chemistry was so intense between them. My heart hurt for them and cheered for them. They are a perfect match and I loved how they are developed. This book for me had great character build and the world was set very nicely. You get a lot of info about Torch and sometimes it was a little hard to keep up but it wasn’t a complete dump. It spreads across the book evenly so it’s not all happening at one. Even with it a little hard to keep straight once you get the full story it becomes rather clear how the magic work. I enjoyed the twists in the book and once this one was over, it has a great ending, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one.

I am so glad I saw this book and I am even happier that I was able to read it. I honestly read this one in a few days. I couldn’t put it down. I loved everything about this and excited to have a new series to enjoy. This is my first book from Ashlyn MacNamara and I am happy to report it will not be my last. I highly recommend, this is a really great read, lots of action, awesome steamy moments and amazing character and world build. A must read!

Thanks for stopping by to check out my review.

Have a great day and Happy Reading!

The first couple chapters of this book were captivating. I found the action, plot, and characters all very interesting and I was dying to figure out what was going to happen next. However, that excitement died throughout the novel. I felt like the beginning of this book was so exciting and promising, but it quickly lost it's charm. I didn't dislike this book, but it didn't live up to my expectations.

I was really looking forward to the battle/action scenes in this book, but I felt like they were glossed over. I wanted some detailed action scenes, but that wasn't really given to me.

Calista was an awesome main character! I thought she was a total badass. She proved that she was an equal to all of the men, and I was loving it. I was rooting for Calista throughout the entire book.

Most of this book seemed to focus on the romance between Torch and Calista. I love romance, but I thought this book need more action, character development, and plot movement outside of the romance. The romance was hot and sexy, but it was overbearing at times. Torch became obsessed with Calista right away, and I honestly could not understand why. I felt like his feelings towards her developed way too quickly. I also cringed at some of the pet names he gave her. He called her "sweetling" and that seriously rubbed me the wrong way. However, as I said, I thought the author did a great job and making some passion-filled moments that had my kindle smoking!

Overall, I thought this was a likable book. The world was enchanting and the characters were relatable. I had some issues with certain aspects of the book, but it was still a fun read as a whole. If you want a hot romance set in historical times, then I would recommend this book to you!

I haven't read a fantasy romance in a long time but I am so glad that I was allowed an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I couldn't put it down.

Torch and his army, The Bastard Brotherhood, attack Blackbriar Keep. In taking the keep, Torch is hit with a poisoned arrow and becomes ill. Calista Thorne is not only the daughter of Blackbriar's lord but she is the one who shot the arrow. Kestrel, the second in command, holds her father in a cell until she heals Torch.

Torch has a Scrying Stone that reveals things to him. He has seen Calista and knows she is destined for him. Calista is engaged to Magnus Vandal, the current king. But is he the rightful king? Her mother has always believed she was destined to be a queen. They marry but the keep is attacked by the king's men. She is injured and that enables her to see the things his Scrying Stone shows him.

There is so much more going on in this book and I dislike plot spoilers. There are some wonderful secondary characters, Wolf, Torch's brother Griffin and his sister Jerrah who has been taken by Magnus and others. I can't wait for Griffin, Jerrah and maybe others to get their own stories. I can easily recommend this wonderful book. Release date September 6th.

Touchstones and touch--destiny awakened!

When the castle you call home is attacked by roving, landless knights, you either squeal and hide, or pick up a weapon and fight. Calista Thorne chooses to defend Blackbriar Keep. She shoots Torch, the commander of the marauding group with a cross bow. Torch however is no common landless knight. He is the son of the slain rightful king. He is seeking to take back the throne. Blackfriars Keep is the beginning. Now Torch is ill and Callista must nurse him back to health in order to keep her father alive. Calista's mother informs Calista that she and her father have been experimenting with kingsbane. No wonder Torch is not healing. Calista is forced to fight for her enemy's life and her father's.
Torch needs to marry Calista. He has foreseen that she is part of his destiny. As the healing process happens, as they share close quarters, they are drawn to each other. Theirs is a passion with an underlying harmony rarely seen.
When the false King responds to Blackfriars being captured, Calista and Torch are once more fighting for their lives, and now their joined destiny. Their quest goes beyond the here and now to things drawn on from the past.
I'm looking forward to the continuing story.

I liked the fantasy setting and the world MacNamara built, but the romance was underdeveloped. It simply moved too fast for an enemy to lovers set up, and even though there was a soulmates element at play, I wanted more tension and build up in their relationship. I also thought that there weren't enough romantic scenes between Torch and Calista, especially in the second half. Imo, fantasy romances really need to be longer in order to develop the main relationship, the world, and the conflict. This book was average romance novel length, and the lack of page space was really a detriment because there wasn't enough space to devote to everything going on.

My rating COULD have been a 4 or 5 except for the lack of depth of description on the fantasy part. I LOVED the premise of the story, but there just wasn't any build-up or explanation for the 'world' we were occupying with the story. The fantasy just wasn't developed. Perhaps the addition of a prologue with a description of the land and its inhabitants and the reason for those would have helped -- maybe even with a description of the murder of Torch's father, etc. We hear about a frozen land where the castle is made of ice, but later changed to an invincible metal -- but -- there is no explanation or development of any of that. The story itself could have been just as easily set in a very early time in Ireland with the druids, etc. Just saying -- the fantasy part was not well developed.

Otherwise -- I loved the story and the characters. However -- one thing that was missing was HOW Torch and his mother got from the royal castle to the frozen castle. Also, once there, why were people allowed to believe that he and his brother and sister are bastards. I understand that the children's identity had to be protected because of their vulnerability, but why bastards -- why not orphans, etc. There are many of the puzzling, missing bits of information throughout the story, so I'll not dwell on them.

This is the first book in the Bastard Brotherhood series by Ashlyn Macnamara. There are supposed to be four books in the series. The first book features Torch and Lady Calista Thorne. The second book features Torch's sister - Owl -- and his war leader Kestrel - due out in 2017. The third book features Torch's brother Griffin and the fourth features Wolf -- those release dates haven't been determined yet. You can find a little of the information I'm complaining about missing at the author's website: http://ashlynmacnamara.net/the-basics... but it still isn't very well fleshed out AND you shouldn't have to go someplace else to get the information that should be contained in the book.

I loved Torch and his determination to take back the throne that belongs to him. I'd love to know the story of how he gathered his group and how they came to believe his claim to be the rightful king. You get snippets of what made Torch such a dynamic leader, how he developed his fighting skills, etc. throughout the book. I hope we get to meet his mother at some point in one of the books in the series because I'm sure she played a large part in making him the man he is.

Lady Calista is definitely a strong female role model. She's lovely, feminine and alluring, but very comfortable donning war gear and using her crossbow to defend herself, her castle and those she loves. I really liked and admired her. I just felt that the story of she and Torch just wasn't finished.

I am actually looking forward to reading the second book in the series next year. I hope that the things that should have been in this book will be included in that book -- or -- maybe since the copy I have read is an ARC -- maybe, just maybe -- the publisher and author will see fit to go back and add some of the backstory into this book. Anyway -- I'll definitely read the second book to see how it goes because these characters interest me and I'd like to see more of their stories.
