I'm not a fan of DC TV shows in general, but Supergirl is the one that I'm the most okay with. It's got a few surprising things going for it, including the best live-action portrayal of Superman to date, and of course Melissa Benoist is delightful as Kara Danvers and Supergirl. Her character is everything DC's big screen Superman should have been, plus the whole feminist angle on top of that. Of course, the show is very far from perfect — it constantly gets lost in some incredibly corny melodrama, the villains are always atrocious, and most importantly, it often forgets that Supergirl is the main character of the show, instead focusing on much less interesting people.

So this tie-in comic really surprised me. First of all, it's very solid for a TV tie-in, and everyone who loves the show will likely enjoy it, as well. It feels just like an episode of the show, or rather even a whole mini-arc, or at least a two-parter. It's set sometime during season 1, and it goes into a lot of stuff from Kara's Kryptonian parents to Fort Rozz to her relationship with Alex and with herself. Now, it is a pretty generic story, and of course it features a couple of cringeworthy one-dimensional villains, and the melodrama's still there, but it does one thing much better than the show: it doesn't forget that Kara is the main character, and Sterling Gates writes her really well.

And that's all I have to say about it, really — I read this comic and I enjoyed it, maybe slightly more than I generally enjoy an episode of the show. Oh, also, the artwork's very inconsistent — nearly every issue is drawn by a different artist, and some if it looks good, but some if it looks fuuuugly. But overall, I would definitely recommend this one to people who like the show and want a bit more Supergirl in their life.

The CW's tie-in comics to their hugely popular (and rightly so) superhero series are usually met with varying levels of success. They're mostly just decent enough to be readable, but restrained by the continuity of the show and very rarely referenced within the show context themselves, making it difficult to tell stories that are punchy and have an impact on the character.

Of course that's not a problem when you've got Sterling Gates writing, since he knows Supergirl inside out and back to front, even if not this particular Supergirl.

Weaving in and out of the series plotline, Gates constructs a plot that tests the bond between Alex and Kara as they deal with a very important Fort Rozz escapee, along with Rampage, Vril Dox, and Psi too. It's well put together and comes to a satisfying conclusion, with good character work for the main stars as well as nods to other ongoing plots in the show like Hank Henshaw's secret identity.

The art is distributed between a number of artists, each of which is well suited to the world of Supergirl and the chapters they are assigned. Bengal, Emanuella Lupacchino, and Emma Vicelli get some of the more brightly coloured settings and stories, whilst darker artists like Cat Staggs and Carmen Carnero deal with the gloomier aspects of the book. It could be a hodge-podge of artists, but Gates plays to all their strengths to make a cohesive story with their help.

Saida Temofonte, the letterer, deserves recognition as well - her work on the Smallville comics always made me sit up and take notice of the lettering, which is something I very rarely do, but she uses different techniques for different characters, even different tones of voice in the narration bubbles, and it always feels like she goes the extra mile.

Like most of the comic tie-ins, you can skip this easily; but if you love Supergirl's TV show as much as I do, you'll find something every bit as fun as that. A comic worthy of holding the Supergirl name.

Loved this! Loved the artwork, the story, and I especially loved getting to see inside Kara's mind. Alex was amazing as usual!
I actually almost cried towards the end (which was very emotional). Need I say more?

It was nice seeing how these characters were interpreted from screen into comic form, and I'm happy to say that I enjoyed this as much as the TV show, which I'm currently watching for the fourth time (I'm not even slightly ashamed of admitting it 👻) in preparation for the season 3 premiere on Monday; I'm so excited I can't wait!! 😃

Definitely recommend if you're a fan of the show--especially if, like me, you always crave more Danvers sisters moments.

Also Cat Grant. I miss you, Cat Grant.

Stories of supergirl are always refreshing to read as they are not same as Superman's at many level; and since it was the extension of The TV series hence it was not a typical supergirl comics book as well. I more or less liked all the stories, though there were 4 different villains and based on that you can say that there were 4 stories but they were all related. But I honestly didn't liked the artwork, I have read the CW tie-up Flash and Arrow comics book as well but they had better art work. Arrow's artwork was better than flash's but artwork in this book was only average. Overall you'll like it if you are a supergirl fan (on or off screen) but nothing extra-ordinary. Only a 3 start stuff

I received a free copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.5*

This was a really fun comic book. I enjoy the character of Supergirl a lot, even though I still haven't checked the TV show out (I know, shame on me). The only comic solely focusing on her that I had previously read I had liked just fine, but didn't find amazing. This one was a little better, but still didn't blow me away.

The art is typical comic book style art and the stories are fairly typical for superhero arcs as well. I enjoyed them, but didn't find them to be groundbreakingly different or unique. If you like Supergirl, I think this comic is definitely worth checking out.

I didn't love this, I didn't hate it either. This particular graphic novel is a spin off of the tv. show. It gave a brief overview of the history on how she got here and then went into a story. It wasn't fabulous all I could think was Mehh.

The Adventures of Supergirl

Working with the DEO is more difficult than Supergirl imagined, especially when a Fort Rozz escapee frames Winn for terrorism and captures James, just to test the resolve of Alura's daughter.

This is a good outgrowth of the 'Supergirl' TV series, but can be read independently and is still enjoyable. The art is fine, though variable from issue to issue.

Better late then never, I suppose, but I should have read this back when the tv show was still on. Anyway, this was a decent story set in the WB Supergirl Universe, or the Arrowverse, if you will. Fans of the show should enjoy this, but otherwise it's not really essential reading.

This is a strong collection of Supergirl stories. (I wish I liked the show this much!) It is clearly set in the TV universe but improves on it by focusing on Supergirl herself while downplaying the DEO and supporting cast. It makes for a much more balanced story. Hopefully this team will do a second volume.

We discussed the early days of the TV show that inspired this volume over on Comic Book Coffee Break: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW-r_...

This was a really fantastic comic. The story was fun, exciting, action-packed, and full of heart - just like the show. It was also really interesting to see 7 different styles of artwork used throughout the book - one to three chapters per style.

In conclusion, if you like the Supergirl comics or TV Show you'll definitely enjoy this book. It's a lot of fun, has a great story, and showcases many different art styles. Highly recommended.

I recieved an advanced copy of this from NetGalley.com and the publisher

Adventures of Supergirl continues the trend of solid but unspectacular, entirely non-essential Arrowverse tie-in comics.

Loosely structured to fit during the first season of Supergirl on CBS, this comic tells a mostly self-contained story about a group of villains who didn't make appearances on the show and the shadowy figure pulling their strings from the shadows. Since these villains didn't make it into the show, it's probably not surprising that they aren't exactly Supergirl's greatest, most famous foes. I'm not deeply familiar with Supergirl lore, but I think this was mostly deeper cuts that were modified to fit within the mythology of the show.

The art comes from a few different folks throughout this digital-first run, and it runs the gamut from pitch-perfect illustrations of Supergirl and to more mediocre illustrations. Most of the supporting cast passingly resembles their actors, but there are times when people like Alex or Winn look far more cartoony than other characters or their surroundings.

Fortunately, most of the characterization for the show's characters is pretty good. From Supergirl to Cat Grant, Hank Henshaw, and more, it was easy for me to imagine their lines delivered by the actors on screen. As a result, while Adventures of Supergirl didn't add much to the greater story of the series or the Arrowverse as a whole, it's a fine way to get a little bit more of the characters circa Season 1 of Supergirl.

Public library copy.

Fans of the TV show ought to enjoy this book based on the characters and events portrayed within the show. I'm not so sure Supergirl fans unfamiliar with the show will enjoy this book as much due to plot elements disconnected from comic book continuity like Hanks AKA MN running the D.E.O. along with her sister Alex. The stories contained herein were good, connected, but the art was all over the place. I thought this book would have made decent episodes because the writer mostly moved away from the CW sappiness. Readers won't see much of Cat from Catco or the teeny bopper romance that is a CW staple.

I'm midway through watching season 2 of Supergirl, and I think the strength of that show is its theme of family, especially the family we choose for ourselves. Supergirl's supporting characters and all their relationships are what make the show worth watching. These comics basically don't have any of that. Yes, the overall plot in this volume involves the villain(s) using her friends and family to get at Supergirl, but that's as far as it goes. You don't get to spend any time with those characters or their relationships. And after that, what's left is just kind of... meh. And it didn't help that the artists kept changing throughout.

A continuation of the Supergirl television show in comic book form and a return to writing Supergirl for Sterling Gates!

Season 1 of Supergirl is my absolute favorite. So it was fun to have a few more stories set in that universe pre-move to the CW.

My only quibbles were the rotating cast of artists (ironically enough a staple on digital books) and not nearly enough Cat Grant. Beautiful covers by Cat Staggs though.

For fans of Supergirl looking for something to read that isn't quite as high quality as Being Supergirl, but who aren't quite ready to dive into Kara's decades of twisting DC canon.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did given the first issue felt rather weak. But instead of being episodic, each successive issue in this volume built on each other and the pay-off was totally worth it. Fans of the show would love this. Though I had an issue with how Kara was drawn by all the artists; she looked too waiflike for my tastes. Also, I do expect in graphic novels that are media-tie-ins to a TV show or movie that the characters would be recognizable as the actors, but they aren't here. It was a bit jarring, but I eventually rolled with it.

honestly this is not what I read but Goodreads took away the option to manually add books so this was close enough for logging purposes.

what I actually read, the supercorp omnibus 2022, had a lot of great artworks from fanartists I hadn't seen before, was made with a lot of love, and had some pretty good fics (not all to my taste or what I think of as "collection quality," but I'm picky and have read a lot)

If you love the TV show, you will defenitely enjoy reading this comic book. It fills in the gaps between the episodes of the first season.

Comics is very well written, the story fills inside the one of the first season of the TV Show and the graphics are awesome! I´m definitely looking forward to reading volume 2 :)

I've pretty much never read comics, so for me this was a good first step into the comics. I liked the way it didn't shy away from Kara's alien side; she has moments of thinking in Kryptonian units of measurement and having to convert it, etc. Only thing it could've used more of imo was Kara Danvers as opposed to just Supergirl most of the time.

I have to admit that this was much better than I expected it to be. It's based on the TV show, which I love, but, in my experience, comic books based on TV shows that are based on comic books don't usually work out very well. This was an exception. The artwork was fantastic, and the story was really good, too.

Very close to how the show works. Kara faces her own demons and those of her Kryptonian family. She also does her best to help others and find her place on planet Earth. Alex is mysterious and the villains are far more than one-dimensional.

Pros: Sterling Gates, cute in-jokes, no TV-budget limitations. Cons: Tonally off from the TV show; lacks any real kind of depth, but then again, the show isn't particularly deep, either (and perhaps blessedly so).

Interesting additional stories to the show. Kind of just extra though - no new information. I did like her stance " Hope, Help and Compassion for all".
