Basically I became interested in becoming a writer after reading Terry McMillan’s novel Disappearing Acts. In 2004 my author dreams were realized via the release of my controversial debut novel My Daughter’s Boyfriend, the story of a 34-year old single mother that becomes attracted to her teenage daughter’s boyfriend.
I love writing about marriage, infidelity, juicy love triangles, family, romance, women's issues, and male/female relationships. It never gets boring to write about what human beings go through.
My novels make you think and feel! If it doesn't do that, I haven't done my job.
My novels/interviews have been featured in USA Today, Black Beat Magazine, Publishers Weekly, Jewel Magazine, Today's Black Woman, Vibe Vixen, Quarterly Black Review, Booking Matters Magazine, Essence magazine, Ebony magazine, Black Expressions Book Club, among others.
Title: My Married Boyfriend Author: Cydney Rax Date Read: September 11th - September 28th, 2016 Date Reviewed: September 28th, 2016
Introduction: I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I wanted to read a soap-opera style novel with lots of love, angst and drama, and I definitely found it! My Married Boyfriend is the second of three novels by Cydney Rex in this series. The book was easy to pick up without reading the first novel, but there were some aspects of the novel that took me some time to connect (Rashad's mistresses and their children). Reading the first novel would be easier for the reader, but you can easily pick this book up and figure it out as you go along.
Spoilers Ahead?: Yes.
Quick Summary: Rashad has many women in his life, and a lot of drama as well. His wife kicked him out, leaving him unable to see Myles or Kiara in all her pregnant glory. Alexis, and his daughter Hayley, are friends with Kiara. And of course, his other mistress Nicole wants to marry him and is pregnant with his child. This novel follows mainly Nicole, but Rashad, Kiara and Alexis as well.
Evaluations: I found this novel to have a fast moving pace, but it lacked in sophistication. I found this book almost to easy to read, and the twists and turns that happened were far to obvious. This book is definitely great if you want to turn your brain off and read a steamy yet dramatic romance, but it's not for anyone who's looking for a sophisticated or complicated read. I found myself loving some chapters and hating others, and it became a love-hate relationship with the novel. But, that's of course, just my opinion. Looking at other reviews, readers who are into romance and soap operas LOVED this novel. I am not a major fan of romance/soap opera styled stories, I enjoy reading them in between my psychological thrillers, horror and young adult sprees.
Plot: The plot is fairly simple - Rashad has children with three women, and he has to juggle them. Kiara is his wife that he is divorcing, and she is pregnant (possibly with his child). Alexis is his baby mama and she has Hayley who is about two years old. Nicole, who is a little crazy, is currently pregnant with his child. Oh, and all three work together in Kiara's office. The plot follows your typical soap opera plot line - Rashad potentially cheating, Kiara keeping his kid away from him and keeping the father of the child a secret, Nicole cheating on Rashad, Rashad finding out, and so on. It's incredibly easy to follow, and it's slightly predictable. That being said, it was never dull. The plot kept me interested and I didn't want to put the book down. Often with romances I want to put the book down and take a break. Yet, I was able to truck along through this novel.
Characters: Rashad was not my favourite lead male. He has three women he is trying to keep relationships with and sometimes he treats them horribly. I felt like he was the weakest point, when he could have been the strongest.
Nicole being crazy seemed like the obvious trophe that could have happened. Rashad breaks up with his wife and his baby mama for a crazy woman who is having his baby. I have seen this on television a lot, but not in print. It was an interesting take, but I didn't enjoy seeing Nicole as constantly crazy. I would have liked her to been crazy for a reason, and to have moments where I felt bad for her, yet I didn't. When bad things happened to Nicole I felt like she had it coming, because it was set up that way.
Kiara & Alexis - These women were the strongest points of this novel, and they weren't in it all that much. Kiara was a very strong lead woman for being in a supporting role. I enjoyed her aspect of the story, since she seemed human. Unlike Nicole, I felt for Kiara when negative turns approached her. I had strong emotions for her. I would have liked Nicole to be written in a similar fashion to her. Alexis was also a strong character, but she was clearly a secondary character and was only used for plot movement. She could have been used more in this novel, and I hope she'd more involved in the third (and first novel, which I haven't picked up yet).
Themes/Creativity: Creativity wise this novel is great. I have rarely seen the soap opera norm of man having a child with a crazy woman in print. I enjoyed reading it, but I felt like Nicole was positioned to be the bad guy. Overall, it was creative and kept my hooked.
For themes, soap opera type novels rarely seem to have them. If you picked apart this novel you might be able to try to piece some together, but I don't think Cydney Rax intended for there to be any strict themes.
Uniqueness: In the category of unique, having a diverse cast was nice. I felt like the book was a little to stereotypical and could have been written better in that sense since the novel had a diverse cast of characters. It's pretty typical for a soap opera type novel, but as I've said, in print it's done a great job of translating it over. I could see this novel becoming a television series such as Desperate Housewives or the many reality television shows that are currently on air.
Strengths: Kiara and Alexis - strong female leads are always great!
Weaknesses: Rashad and Nicole - these two characters were stereotypical and did not make me feel for them, which they should have. They were our main characters!
Score: 2 out of 5. I expected so much more out of this novel, and I felt that it lacked in many areas. Our leads left me without emotions for them, our diverse cast was written to be stereotypical of their ethnicity, and the writing style felt like it was meant to be a very easy read. I did love Kiara and Alexis, and I also loved how quick this novel moved, but the negatives out weighed the positives for me in this novel. That being said, I'd like to read more by Cydney Rax. She seems to know how to write drama, and I'd like to see her grow as she writes more.

My Married Boyfriend is part two of The Love & Revenge series, I was very happy to receive this book, because I was dying to know how things were going to end up for Rashad and his three baby mama's. I was proud of Alexis and how she decided she no longer wanted to be the side chick, If I was Kiara I would have stomped a mud hole in Nichole. This book was up and down for me, It would get really good and then it would get wordy and I would put it down. I really hope we have not seen the last of Ajalon or Eddison. Cydney titles draw you into her books and the words on the pages keep you coming back. I am looking forward to the last installment in these series.
This book was provided by the author for an honest review.
In My Married Boyfriend, we're revisited by Nicole. Nicole plotted, planned and schemed into her way into her boyfriend Rashad's heart. But what Rashad is quickly discovering that Nicole has somewhat of a troubled past. Because of her upbringing Nicole has deep rooted insecurities that make her overly critical of those around her. She finally got the man but she has to convince him to marry her. She wants the happily ever after. A lover from the past the handsome Ajalon is fresh from prison, and is determined to continue their affair, and no matter how hard she tries she can't seem to resist him. Nicole realizes that if she doesn't keep Ajalon out of her life, she's on destructive course that could jeopardize her ultimate goal.
Kiara is anxious about the birth of her baby and her new relationship with Eddison. She has left all of the drama behind and she is concentrating on being the best mother she can be. Although she has accepted Nicole into her life she's still distrustful of her. Kiara uncovers something disturbing about Nicole and if it is revealed it could change the course of all of their lives.
My Married Boyfriend has a perfect combination of drama and romance. It is engrossing and there are unexpected twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seats, and ultimately an unpredictable ending that the reader never sees coming. My Married Boyfriend is not to be missed. Kudos Cydney.
What do you do when you find yourself pregnant by your boss' husband? Just ask Nicole. Not only is she pregnant, but she had dreams of becoming Rashad's wife. The only problem is…her ex-boyfriend has arrived in town and he's not taking no for an answer.
Kiara, Rashad's wife, is pregnant as well, but doesn't know who the father is. How will this affect her relationship with Eddison? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in the sequel to "If Your Wife Only Knew".
I gave the book 5 starts because it kept my interest from page one and held it until the end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.
Odd triangle...square...hexagon?? I don't know what to call it but the connection between the "baby mamas - wife included" is a little far fetched that even after all was found out they would still have that connection. But I knew that from the first book and it's still odd. The zoo scene struck me as weird with Nicole being seen as "saving" Miles when I was heated about her endangering the child. Overall it was a decent listen, a little unbelievable but entertaining nonetheless.
This book was good. I read it out of order not realizing it was a part of a serious. Now I have to wait until February 2017 for the third one to come out. It was definitely a page turner for me.
This book was good, but not as juicy as book 1. But I already know book 3 going to be lit. Ugh, I wish the library had it but it just came out in February of this year. I need to get book 3. Because I am ready for Rashad payback to Nicole.
When I started on this book, I really didn't feel bad for Nicole or Kiara. Because the way they were asking towards people Nicole with women in general and Kiara with Rashad when it came to her son. But Nicole I knew she was full of it. And that ending though, I am like get her Rashad lol. I am ready for part 3, Mt cousin said "you look like you reading a GOOD book" Lol.
Spoilers. I never realized that this book is the second part of the Story I had read on well listen to on audible. Until I got half way through the book and was almost finished. The first book yeah I disliked Rashad, but not in this book, I believed that he was trying to change "sort of" not fully because he was still running behind Alexis and she didn't want him. But listen I want him to leave Nicole alone so bad man, like she got him stupid fool, but I got to get part 3, because I am ready for the pettiness that will be in part 3 where he does her good, but when I read part 3 in this book you know the short summary, my heart drop.
The second book in this series was all I could have imagined. The perfect twist and turns that made reading this book in one day totally worth it. Cannot wait for the last book to come out. Great job Cydney Rax
I honestly feel like this book was not very good! There was such a disconnect to me. Kiara seemed so wishy washy about everything! Alexis in real life would not be a friend to the wife of her lover and Nicole was all over the place! The first book was much better, this one just jumped all over! I hope the conclusion of this series is much better as I struggled with this one!
I couldn't figure out whether this was the first or second book in the series, but I ended up reading this one first. I will not go back and read the first; however, I will read the third. I realize that books sometimes need to take us away from reality, but this book seemed too unrealistic to me. Rashad cheating on Kiara, so Kiara cheats on him. Both are pregnant. 2 year old outside child within the marriage. The ease of Kiara's forgiveness and Nicole's conniving ways just irritated me. And where were the witnesses to her shenanigans with the cheetah? The ending of this book also felt rushed, like the author didn't know how she wanted Rashad to confront Nicole so she added a random car thief. And what was the significance of Henry hearing her call Ajalon by his real name? Yeah, the incohesiveness of my thoughts: that's how I felt reading this book. It's not a 1 or 2, but it could be a lot better. Maybe #3 will be.
How far are you willing to go to get what you want? Nicole gets everything she wants the baby and the man. Will her past catch up with her? Rashad has four kids now. Has he learned his lesson? Nicole receives some critical advice from her best friend, will she listen? Alexis has moved on with her life and seems to have learned from her side chicks ways. Rashad still has a piece of her but will he tempt her again? Kiara is angry about the two babies, Rashad's lies and affairs, and her being gullible. Does she have the heart to move on with Eddison? There are a lot of moving parts, but the story picks up from book one with revenge and scandal.
I have read a few of Rax’s other “My” books (MDB, MHG, and MSE) and have enjoyed them. I was unaware that this was the second book in the Love and Revenge series when I started it. Having read her other books previously, I have to rate this book according to her known potential. I was grossly disappointed. The story lagged at multiple points during the book, the twists were predictable, there were some scenes that failed to make sense and lacked purpose and I wasn’t attached to the main characters at all, due to lack of depth. I felt no connection to any of the characters.
But I will remain a fan (I gave Rax’s other books 5 stars), but this one did not move me at all.
A heartwarming story of how cheating affects all involved!
The story continues to show how cheating changes people's lives for good and bad. The more I read this book I became so engrossed with hatred for Rasheed all the while admiring the women in his life. This book makes you think, love and hate. The emotions derived from this book takes you on a journey that may or may not be familiar. If you have ever lived any part of this story, you will feel this book in your core. This is a very powerful and heartwrenching story, that is not over!
Storyline was good, kept me intruiged. I thought it would have had a little bit more drama when Rashad found out about Nicole's infidelity! However, there is a book three so maybe he will revert back to his old ways. I will say I like how Alexis and Keara have fordged a bond and became friends for the sake of the kids and wasn't immature about it. I am happy for Keara and Alexis that they got rid of Rashad and living happy lives! Nichole is bound to get what she deserves, she no good and conniving and I hope some stuff pop off on her in the last book!

Lisa Smith's narration was still good. However, the story took a turn that was less than good turn. Many of the scenes with Nicole seemed extremely unbelievable. I wish there was more character growth other than Alexis, minimal as it were.....I was not impressed nor did I completely dislike this book. I have no feeling about it either way . I don't think 3rd book was needed. Books 2 & 3 could have been combined possibly.
Okay so I get the impression this is part of a series and I don't know if this was the first book or what because they're referencing a lot of jenkyness that I feel like I must have missed in another book. I'm going to look up this author and see if there was something before this book. At any rate. This was a good book that wasn't exactly predictable and I like the twists and character development. I would ready more from this author.
I too believe in karma, and karma is going to hit Nicole bad! Rashad didn't like it when he found out he was cheated on but he is the master cheater two baby mommas and a wife wow!
I wasn't such a huge fan of this book. I didn't read book 1 in the series which probably would have made a different. But the storyline was kind of boring and predictable and just very weird to me. There was no plot twist, it kind of dragged on and I got bored f it easily. It was a super easy read though, finished it in 2 days so that's good at least!
