Jean Van Hamme, is a Belgian novelist and comic book writer. He has written scripts for a number of Belgian/French comic series, including Histoire sans héros, Thorgal, XIII, Blake and Mortimer, Lady S and Largo Winch.
What do you know? The author finished the first arc in only 5 volumes. Comixology Unlimited has the first 10 of 27 volumes available for free. So I am on to Vol 6 already and see where the story o XIII goes next. Hoping is is not as complex as this first arc, but I am betting it is.
I will see where this European version of Jason Bourne goes next.
So, in the fifth volume of this series suddenly everything comes to conclusion, all the threads are explained and world order is saved. I was expecting more of the same from the previous volumes, i.e. that we would get more puzzles and more cryptic stories. But no, a real proper ending. I'm aghast!
The storyline works and the art is OK, but I still think the script is way to talkative and the art a bit stiff for my liking. And then there's the surprise ending, where XIII rescues several persons from a secure locked room 170 meters underground, which is set to explode in just seconds, and you never get an explanation as to how that worked. Feels like cheating from van Hamme to be honest ... Maybe he wrote himself into a corner there.
Now that there's no cliffhanger I'm tempted not to go on reading, but on the other hand I'm sort of curious as to how van Hamme solved the problem of extending what seems to have been planned as a five album finite series, into an ongoing series. When Akira Toriyama had to do that on the fly with Dragon Ball, this very obviously shines through in the end results, at least to an adult reader.
Here the second episode of the dyptic with Spads and on my point of view the master piece of XIII. If it has been presented as the first arc of XIII, I am not so convinced it is the case as so many questions are left open, and the plot for a fascist dictator is present only from the episode speeds. This episode looks very eighties, but have a resonance with the beginning of the XXI centuries.
Offcourse the way the story is structure remains really European, even if it has some violence that we are not used to see much in the popular Franco-Belge comic books I specially like the relation between XIII and Jones, the personality of Betty, but also the end of the plot which fit completely with the next episodes.
This story of XIII comes to a close as the conspirators' coup attempt comes to fruition. I was surprised this wrapped up already given how many volumes there are. Still there are some open subplots they Van Hamme can tackle in future volumes. XIII still doesn't have his memory back so I suppose the story will head in that direction next.
Johan oli salaliittoja ja suuria suunnitelmia kerrassaan. Olisin antanut viisi tähteä, mutta taas kerran ärsytti tuo loputon asioiden selittäminen. Eräänlainen välitilinpäätös mutta paljon jäi silti kysymysmerkkejä. Komeaa taidetta, odotan paljon seuraavalta tulevaisuudelta.
This is a very generous 3-star review. Though the story is intricate and the art OK (though in my opinion a bit too elaborate), the excess of on-the-nose dialogue annoys me. Also, there is something I don't quite understand. Near the end, Wally Sheridan, president Galbrain, Amos and the girl escape the explosion, but I don't really get how. Will it be explained later, or did I miss something? I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, but right now, I'm not really a fan. I enjoy reading the series, but some things annoy me too much to love it. I expected more.
This volume concludes a great story line, but leaves XIII with new hints - and new tasks - to find out who he really is and what got him where he is... XIII proves to be an amazing series with every volume anew. Even with the conspiracy uncovered, the story promises to remain highly interesting.
