“The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery.”

----Anaïs Nin

John Lansing, an American author, pens a gripping and page turning thriller, Dead is Dead which is the third book in the series, Jack Bertolino that is centered around a retired cop and his new job to protect a popular rising star from her cyber stalker, but things get bit out of hand when a little child is left murdered few blocks away from the studio where the actress is shooting for her film.

Synopsis:

From the "pulse pounding" (Kirkus Reviews) writer of TV hit Walker, Texas Ranger comes a riveting Hollywood thriller that will keep you captivated until the shocking conclusion.Retired Inspector Jack Bertolino gets his first taste of the erratic nature of Hollywood when A-list producer, George Litton, options one of Jack's recent cases for a film. Jack is engaged as the film's technical advisor, which stars It Girl Susan Blake. But more importantly, he's on hand to keep a protective eye on Susan, who's being harassed by a disturbing cyber-stalker. But that's not all that starts to turn Jack's world upside-down. When a five-year-old girl is shot dead in her family's living room, just blocks from where the movie is being filmed, Jack realizes there are threads connecting the movie, the murder, a brutal gang of brothers, and a terrifying body count. Will Jack be able to find justice for the young girl and keep Susan safe? Or will this be his last and fatal trip to Hollywood?

The retired cop and the private investigator Jack Bertolino, who has been hired by an A-list director to be an adviser in the film that is inspired from one of Jack's recent cases and also to be a bodyguard for the popular newbie starlet actress who apparently is being stalked by a dangerous. And things get risky as a little girl is left with a bullet in her brain while playing inside her own house, and it makes Jack wonder whether the movie plays any part in the killing of this little child. Moreover, it also makes Jack suspect on whether the actress, Susan is lying about the identity of the stalker. Jack must join the clues together before another innocent victim is claimed on the glamorous yet dark dingy streets of LA.

Well this is the first time that I read anything by the author, John Lansing, and after reading this book, I'm digging badly to read the author's previous books which I bet are equally arresting. What can I say about this fast paced action thriller that gripped my mind right at the very first page and all through its course, I could feel that adrenaline rush inside me to get to the climax of the story line, which is not only unforeseeable but also quite interesting. The story is bound to push its reader to their edges thereby keeping them glued till the turn of the very last page.

There are double mystery which runs parallely with one another, but never once dominating over the another, so the readers can feel that balance between the two mysteries, where one is the revolved around the little girl's killer, that the readers are aware about the killer's identity but not Jack, and the other where neither Jack nor the readers are aware or have any clue about the stalker's identity, so both the mysteries will keep the readers anticipating till the very end. And not to mention there are tons of intense and juicy drama surrounding Jack, his new sexual partner, Susan and his ex-wife, Jeannie, that spice up this already intensified crime thriller.

The author's writing style is robust and articulate that will help the readers to comprehend not only with the story line, but also with the attached emotions in each and every scene. The narrative is highly intriguing that will keep the readers guessing until the next twist comes and hits them right on their face. The pacing is really fast, as one layer after another keeps unraveling midst of so many unpredictable twists and turns, so there's not a moment to take a breath for the readers as the author keeps building this puzzle with his smart imaginative skills.

The characters are extremely well developed and are dynamic with enough realism in their demeanor to make them look believable in the eyes of the readers. The main character, Jack, is a brave and sharp detective with an ability to crack up a sarcastic remark about his single life will make the readers fall for him. The one thing that took me by surprise is that this character has no gray shades to this character to challenge the readers with his attitude. Whereas there are some supporting characters which are depicted with lots of flaws and shades that make them look interesting in the eyes of the readers.

In a nutshell, this is a captivating and completely heart throbbing tale with lots of actions, drama, scandals and murder that is perfect for the fans of crime thrillers, and not to mention, there's enough Hollywood drama to turn this thriller into something spicy.

Verdict: Take a wild ride to the tinsel town where murder and stalking play a central role in this compelling and edgy thriller.

John Lansing in his new book, “Dead Is Dead” Book Three in the Jack Bertolino series published by Gallery Books gives us another adventure with Jack Bertolino.

From the back cover: Retired Inspector Jack Bertolino gets his first taste of the erratic nature of Hollywood when A-list producer, George Litton, options one of Jack’s recent cases for a film. Jack is engaged as the film’s technical advisor, which stars It Girl Susan Blake. But more importantly, he’s on hand to keep a protective eye on Susan, who’s being harassed by a disturbing cyber-stalker.

But that’s not all that starts to turn Jack’s world upside-down. When a five-year-old girl is shot dead in her family’s living room, just blocks from where the movie is being filmed, Jack realizes there are threads connecting the movie, the murder, a brutal gang of brothers, and a terrifying body count. Will Jack be able to find justice for the young girl and keep Susan safe? Or will this be his last and fatal trip to Hollywood?

John Lansing has done it again which means get ready for a nail-biting, page-turning thriller which Mr. Lansing knows how to write very well. Jack is out in Hollywood for the filming of one of his cases but he gets involved with cyber-stalkers, murder and cold-blooded killers. “Dead Is Dead” is well crafted suspense. Mr. Lansing creates characters are so real that you are drawn to all of them. “Dead Is Dead” is great fun to read. I am already looking forward to the next adventure with Jack Bertolino.

Another terrific read from John Lansing! “Dead Is Dead” is dead on! This is Lansing’s third book featuring Jack Bertolino, a retired NYC top narc turned California PI. Trouble comes at Jack Bertolino from all directions, and, for the most part, trouble gets its ass kicked!

No character, including those we’ll come to love, is spared Lansing’s napalm as Jack Bertolino follows a trail of blood, bodies and tears stretching from a Big Sur cliff to a Catalina cave, from Hollywood glitz to gangland grit, ganja and greed.

Story opens with the tragic murder of an innocent little girl playing with her doll in the safety of her own living room -- sadly an every day occurrence in L.A., hardly enough to be more than a blip on the evening news. But it sets off alarm bells as Jack Bertolino discovers she was killed by an errant bullet meant for a gangbanger dealing drugs in front of her house.

Once on the trail, Bertolino becomes enmeshed in a complex web of deceit, retribution, cartel hitmen, and a brutal murder spree committed by the Dirk brothers -- a trio of upscale lowdown bastards who think they’re untouchable behind the respectable and seemingly impenetrable facade of their high end clothing store. Much of the fun of “Dead Is Dead” is watching Jack Bertolino take that facade apart, brick by brick, Dirk by Dirk.

Not only is Lansing the master of melding pace, suspense and action, his array of well defined characters continues to impress. Even though the story is told from Bertolino’s point of view, Lansing deftly manages to get into the heads of characters at all ends of the spectrum, allowing us to see the same reality, differently perceived.

Though “Dead Is Dead” would make a terrific action movie, not all the action is violent. Throughout, Jack is also providing security for a beautiful movie star, trying to protect her from a twisted stalker with a dark secret. So here the action becomes more the peeled panties, plowed pillows, sweat soaked sheets kind of action.

John Lansing is a true artist who paints vividly with words, and in “Dead Is Dead” he paints us a rainbow through Hell, leading to an action packed resolution best described as “machine guns in the wild west”.

Well done, Mr. Lansing! Looking forward to the next one!

Review
If you have ever watched the T.V. series Walker, Texas Ranger also written by John Lansing, then you will already know that he can write a darned good story. This is action, all the way from the beginning to the exciting climax

Hollywood producer George Litton wants to make a movie based on one of Jacks recent cases, he employs Jack as both technical advisor and protector of the female lead, Susan Blake who has a cyber stalker. Jack Bertolino, P.I. and retired police officer enters the world of Hollywood and movie making.

The film action starts on set, but a real life tragedy occurs nearby, a six year old little girl is shot dead in her own home, at the same time outside her house a drug dealer is also shot dead. At first, it looks like a drive by shooting, but the reader will know the truth from the beginning.

The shooter is a cold hearted, chilling villain but he feels justified, he "never killed a man who didn't need killing", but killing the child was a mishap, he regretted it but seemed more concerned that the murder of a child could create more problems for him and his brothers. Child murder motivated the police like no other crime, if he was caught it might also lead the police to his brothers. Add drug running to the mix and Jack Bertolino has his hands full.

I missed the second book in this series, but the author adds enough backstory for the reader to be informed. Despite the fact that there is an awful lot going on in this book the author never leaves the reader feeling confused as to what's happening, the writing flows beautifully.

The ending is very exhilarating and builds to a tremendous crescendo of excitement. It's a little too action packed though for my particular tastes, and I did find parts of the storyline to be quite chilling, but I highly recommend it to those who love a multi layered fast moving, filled to the brim adventure.

Jack Bertolino is back and better than ever.

Dead Is Dead is a deftly plotted page-turner of a thriller that puts author John Lansing’s Bertolino at the top of my thriller detective list along with Lee Child’s, Jack Reacher, and James Patterson’s, Alex Cross. In this, the third book in the series, Bertolino is plying his trade as a private security guard for beautiful actress, Susan Blake, the new “It Girl” in Hollywood. Susan needs private security on and off the set because of a stalker that’s followed her from New York to LA. Jack and Susan soon become an item, and as the story progresses, Bertolino discovers the stalker is also the keeper of a dark secret that could harm Susan in many ways.
As intriguing as this story is, it isn’t the main story. That has been reserved for the Dirk brothers: Toby, Sean, and the charming mastermind of the bunch, Terrence. These boys are as dirty as they come, and despite their Country Club veneer, present Jack with his most cunning and murderous opponents yet.
Lansing does his typical masterful work in blending together several storylines--one involving Jack’s son, Chris, and ex-wife Jeannine. This is a charming storyline that furthers the beautiful relationship between Jack and his son while giving us a fun does of Jack’s ex, who shows up at his door totally unexpected. Jack’s hands are already full with Susan’s stalker, finding a child-killer, missing drugs, and the murderous Dirk boys. The last thing he needs is an ex who just might be pushing for a reconciliation Jack doesn’t want.
I won’t spoil it for you by telling any more. All I will say is map out a chunk of time for this juicy read. Once you begin, you will not want to put it down.

WOW!!!! I literally could not put this book down, having read it in a 24 hour period.

I became a fan of John Lansing after reading Blond Cargo and The Test and Dead Is Dead did not disappoint. Matter of fact, it was exceptional!!!!

Dead Is Dead is non stop, palpable, nail biting action! A definite page turner! Intriguing, thrilling, conpelling!

Mr. Lansing's writing style is so descriptive that it allowed this reader to create vivid imagery.

I found only one negative with this book, which is, I now have to patiently wait for Mr. Lansing's next novel.

I highly recommend this read, however, plan to read it in one sitting as you won't be able to put it down!!!

Bravo John Lansing!!! You did it again!!!

I would like to thank NetGalley and Gallery Books/Karen Hunter Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review.
Retired Inspector Jack Bertolina has one of his cases optioned by film producer George Litton. He is hired as a technical advisor and body guard to leading lady Susan Blake.
This is a fast-paced, action packed thriller. The action starts on page one and continues throughout the book. The characters are well described, fleshed out and develop nicely as the book progresses and we get to know them better.
The tension is slowly built up, resulting in an explosive finale.
If you love thrillers that get your heart pounding this is definitely one for you.

Jack Bertolino, ex-cop now technical advisor and bodyguard to actress Susan Blake - has he own problems for Jack to solve.
Then a young girl is shot near a location shoot and Jack becomes involved in finding her killer.
Unfortunately the story starts towards drugs, drug cartels etc which as a subject I have no interest.

Jack Bertolino is an ex-cop, now private detective working as a bodyguard to film star Susan Blake. She has been cast as the lead star in a film based on one of Jack's previous cases. Susan needs a bodyguard as she has a nasty stalker but, while in the process of filming a shooting a few blocks away, a gang member and a six-year-old innocent child are killed. Jack takes on this case in an attempt to find out who really killed the innocent girl and finds himself involved in a complex world of high art, drugs, money, and murder.

Right from the start, chapter one told me this was going to be a good book. It set the stage well with a gripping and suspenseful scene, letting me know that the story would be an interesting one. The book was both complex, nuanced, and layered, letting the reader into the minds of the main characters. The characters were also interesting and often had multiple layers which allowed me to understand even the darkest characteristics and motives they possessed. I also enjoyed the structure of two stories in one. On one hand there were the attempts to solve the murder of the gang member, Tomas Vegas, and the innocent child, Maria Sanchez, while also trying to protect Susan Blake from a mysterious stalker.

This was my first book in the Jack Bertolino series even though this is the third novel, I felt the author gave me enough background about Jack that this was easily read as a stand alone book. It did, however, make me want to read the other books in the series. Particularly since this one made me feel so much a part of the action. Whether a character was catching a wave off the coast or in a shoot out, I felt the descriptions were superb, giving the reader the sense of being right there with the characters in the middle of the scene.

Overall, it was a book that I couldn't put down, a real visual feast, which would make a great film. It's a book that packs a punch and I feel sure that anyone who reads this will be hooked on the Jack Bertolino series.

I’ve got to say John Lansing just raised the bar for crime fiction in this, the third of the Jack Bertolino series. Dead is Dead is a hard-hitting page-turner with terrific subplots that weave into a complex story with characters that are pop-off-the-page real. I started reading Dead is Dead on a recent flight and found it so gripping I couldn’t put the book down, reading long after I reached my destination and then on into the night.

Retired inspector Jack Bertolino is working on a movie being filmed on location, consulting and protecting the lead actress from a stalker. When a six-year-old girl becomes the accidental victim of what looks like a drug related drive-by shooting just blocks from the movie set, Bertolino is pulled into a case with threads connecting the movie, the murder, a brutal gang of brothers and a rising body count.

This novel should squarely plant Lansing somewhere in Robert Crais territory. With a punch like Don Winslow, Lansing’s definitely a voice to be reckoned with. Give it five stars.

John Lansing scored a trifecta with his third novel, “Dead is Dead”, following “Blond Cargo” and “The Devil’s Necktie”. Lansing artfully weaves several compelling interconnected stories as we watch Jack Bertolino’s detective work unfold to solve a crime of passion that takes you for a ride filled with surprises, unexpected emotions and a nerve-racking ending that delivers. From the opening scene, you are hooked. His storytelling captures the imagination of the reader as we gain insight into each of his characters, carefully holding back details so you can’t wait for the reveal with each page turn. I read Lansing’s novel with an intensity reserved for truly great stories. Can’t wait for the next book!

"Dead is Dead", by author John Lansing is another hit by this author. I really liked this book and I have liked others by this author. He writes his stories with strong characters and locations. It almost seems as if you are right there watching it unfold. I like his character Jack Bertolino and I am glad he is back. The only thing that seems to bother me is sometimes the language. The book is a fantastic story and really would be just as good without the bad language. In this book Jack Bertolino is investigating who killed a young child . She was shot right in her own home. Will he be able to solve this murder? I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for a review by Partners in Crime Book Tours and these are my opinions.

A young girl is dead! One minute she is happy playing with her doll and then she is shot and killed in her own house. Why? Just because someone has to have drugs? Jack Bertolino is a Retired Inspector who is going to find out how and why this happened. He has to try to keep everyone safe while he is trying to catch the killer or killers. This novel is full of action and suspense. You will not be able to put it down until you get to the end. I give this book a 5/5. The best yet! Having read Lansing’s previous thrillers I have become very familiar with detective Jack Bertolino, and in “Dead is Dead” Lansing surpasses my expectations by delivering an intriguing story that literally kept me on the edge of my seat. No matter what town you grew up in we all knew the local bad boy, and in this book we were treated to bad boys times three with the fabulous Dirk Brothers.
You hit it out of the park Lansing!

The beginning of the end is a bullet destined for a real piece of shit. As often happens with bullets, it causes collateral damage, namely the death of a little girl. From there, a thread of death begins to unravel, linking a film set whose star is being stalked, three brothers considered the golden boys of the area but secretly bloodthirsty criminals, and a vicious drug trafficking cartel. Jack Bertolino, a retired detective turned private investigator, bodyguard and film consultant, tries to follow this thread to prevent further deaths, particularly that of the actress he is assisting. A fast-paced thriller with the right amount of psychological depth, in which the scenes of violence, although never sugar-coated, do not disturb the reader. An excellent read.

After reading Dead is Dead, I was struck by the feeling that everything else John Lansing has written has lead up to this moment, this characters, these Jack Bertolino novels. With "Dead is Dead", the third book in the series, John has hit his stride as an incredible fiction writer, and can proudly take his place among the greats; Patterson, Connolly, Jance, et al. We can start any review of his work here, with this understanding. There is no doubt, John Lansing's an entertaining writer, with more than just these books to entertain the reader, and he always manages to breathe new life into the genre. Somehow, the character of the 'tough, charismatic, ex-cop turned PI' story becomes entertaining once again. Lansing's deft creation of supporting characters that one either loves or hates helps set these books apart from the usual one might expect of this genre.
In "Dead is Dead" more than a couple questions about Jack's past are answered, while the main story unfolds, the information doesn't feel forced or unnatural, even for a moment. When I read "Dead is Dead", I really got lost in the story, mainly because Jack is a fascinating subject of study to me. Part of the appeal of this series to me, is the enjoyment of how Jack is changed or prompted to grow and change in each book of the series. Having been a long time fan of this kinds of suspense stories, I have long realize how hard it is for a retired cop to stay retired, and Jack is as human as any of this his peers.Stay retired and take simple PI cases? He can try. In a tradition dating from before Marlowe, the loner detective with a heart of gold, has taken on the case he probably shouldn't have. Jack is no exception. His sympathies touched, Jack goes on the hunt for the killer of a small child. His diligent search for the truth turns into a 'stay up way too late but couldn't stop reading' thrill ride. Meanwhile, in Jack's personal life, he make a large step towards resolving his long standing family conflicts and his love life sizzles as usual, as he's surrounded interesting female characters and not the stereotypical femme fatales, spunky ingenue and loyal secretary with a crush that pepper many a private investigator story. Not that I don't expect the occasional stereotype to turn up, but even those "walk on" characters, have a sense of fully developed characters. Read the series through if you can, but 'Dead is Dead' is also a great stand alone novel, as are the others in the Jack Bertolino series. You won't regret the time spent reading this series.

Private investigator Jack Bertolino, previously an inspector with the NYPD, is employed as technical advisor, consulting on a movie being made of his last case. His job includes protection for the female star, who is being targeted by a disturbed, out of control stalker. Susan Blake is beautiful, haunted by a past that she can’t lay to rest.

During filming there’s an actual shooting several blocks away, which results in the accidental and tragic death of little Maria Sanchez and also that of known drug dealer, Tomas Vegas. Cruz Feinberg, the technical wizard in Jack’s company, knows the Sanchez family and asks Jack to make some enquiries. As Jack’s investigation progresses the Dirk brothers’ names pop up too often for Jack’s liking and his ingrained cop’s instinct is on high alert.

Toby Dirk and his brothers, Sean and Terrence, dip into various illegal activities, including theft, drugs and money laundering, under the cover of their family retail store. As Jack follows a trail of bodies he’s drawn into the dark and dangerous world of drug cartels and street gangs, which all began with a murder committed with revenge in mind.

There’s a great cast of diverse characters, not least of which are the Dirk brothers, who make fabulous antagonists. The storylines and subplots are merged together beautifully in this tightly plotted and intriguing thriller. Written in the third person, it gives a good perspective from each of the main characters. John Lansing’s excellent portrayals, suspenseful and action-packed narrative are combined with snappy, realistic dialogue and clear, detailed imagery, including terrific descriptions of the locales…. and the food!

The pace builds quickly and the drama unfolds as details are revealed gradually with many surprises, and excitement, along the way. Jack and his colleagues have their work cut out to unravel the threads that connect everything together. It’s a gripping tale, ending with a volatile and tense climax. And one of the things I particularly enjoyed was the appearance of Jack’s ex-wife and his son, Chris, adding some humour to the storyline. I loved the previous Jack Bertolino books and this one more than lived up to expectations.

They say there’s no nice way to kill someone and that proves to be the case in John Lansing’s latest novel, “Dead Is Dead.”

Jack Bertolino, a retired NYPD Inspector and now reluctant private investigator is the technical advisor on a big budget police movie, pulling double duty protecting the film’s beautiful star, who’s been plagued by a stalker. He gets drawn into the investigation of the murder of a drug dealer and a six-year-old girl who was hit with a stray bullet while playing in her living room.

Lansing once again uses Los Angeles as his backdrop, particularly Silicon Beach – Santa Monica, Venice, and Marina Del Rey, with their high-end shops and restaurants and just beneath the surface, low down crimes. The body count rises and it’s up to Jack to figure things out before anyone else dies. That includes him.

The ladies love Jack and Jack loves the ladies. His relationship with the star becomes sexual and we learn there’s more to her story than meets the eye.

“Dead Is Dead” has it all – murder, drug cartels, a vicious gang of brothers, sex and Hollywood glitz and well defined, three dimensional good guys and bad guys with an ending you will not see coming. It makes for an exciting, page turning read.

The wait is over for Dead Is Dead, the third book in the Jack Bertolino series, and John Lansing does not disappoint. I'm always impressed with Lansing's character work. The Dirk brothers are adversaries that are so complex, so dark, yet continue to intrigue. They may be my favorite foes so far. But they don't ruffle Jack, his sixth sense for deceit is on full alert. I have to say the new love interest, Susan Blake, is also a great example of a well rounded, complex character. She's a sexy actress that can play a kick ass detective. But she's no dummy and has a dark secret that keeps you guessing and wanting more. The pace builds as one minute Jack makes you hungry with the smells of garlic and tomato sauce, and of course a glass of red wine. Then jumps into danger facing gang members and the Dirk brothers with action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Sailing into an action finale on Catalina Island that is so powerful, it takes your breath away. Just like his stories, John Lansing keeps me wanting more. A fourth book please!

Dead is Dead is John Lansing’s third novel in the Jack Bertolino series in which the PI solves some devastating murders, this time by a family of psychopathic brothers who kill for greed and retribution. He brings them to heal in a finale that is one of the most exciting action sequences I’ve ever read: good guys in boats and helicopters, bad guys on foot in hiding, cartel scum in helicopters and a surprise element that ties it all together. What a page-turner. What an ending!

There is also Bertolino’s relationship with the gorgeous Hollywood “It” girl who is being stalked and extorted by a very scary dude disguised as paparazzi. It adds another layer of intrigue to a story filled with fascinating characters and great action.

When is the next installment, Mr. Lansing?

Jack Bertolino is back! And Mr. Lansing's prose is stronger than ever in the crime thriller fiction, "Dead Is Dead." After "Devil's Necktie" and "Blond Cargo," I was eager to follow Jack on his next adventure. And when it arrived, I could not put it down. What a taut, suspenseful narrative with plenty of surprises! Expertly builds the stakes, deftly blends tension with splashes of levity. Mr. Lansing has a terrific eye for detail and nuance in both his characters' behaviors and their environments and a conductor's ear for rat-a-tat dialogue. Both the main antagonists and the subplots were refreshing. Oh, and all three novels need to be brought to screen!

Another thrilling entry in the Jack Bertolino series. John Lansing can't write these fast enough for my taste. These books always offer an exciting and compelling read with fascinating and complex characters and plots which carry you along on their intense journey and leave you satisfied but wanting more. If you're a fan of crime thrillers and haven't looked into this series yet you're in for a treat! Keep them coming!

Action from start to finish

This book certainly held my attention from the start to final battle. If you like a variety of stories, many of which eventually tie together, you'll enjoy this book. Initially, there seemed to be a lot of characters but they got sorted out fairly quickly. It's heavy on action with a considerable amount of gunplay. Pretty good read!
