Since I am interrupting my reading of this book about 100 pages in, my rating and this "review" are
necessarily tentative. Still, I think a word of caution to general readers is in order.
I wanted to read this book because of my interest in the controversy about "judicial reform" that has been roiling Israel. I wanted to know more about the development of Justice Aharon Barak's "constitutional revolution" and the cases that gave rise to it.
But I am already very familiar with the issues now being debated; in fact, I've written a number of posts on the controversy for the Times of Israel, one of which was selected by the editors to be "featured." I'm also in a bit of a rush to write some more, and I think the book is telling me more than I need to know.
I found the first few chapters on the development of the Israeli legal system very interesting, although I was already largely familiar with most of the material. But that was followed by a long, very detailed and hard-to-follow discussion of the legal and political maneuverings related to a scandal involving the extra-judicial killing of two Palestinian terrorists (the Bus 300 episode). I was skipping pages at this point, which could have been responsible, but I was unable to discern the relevance of this incident to the issues that interested me.
The same was true of the following chapter, which dealt with another highly publicized scandal, this one involving the alleged torture of a criminal defendant.
It was at this point that I realized I needed to read something new. I'm sure I'll come back to "The Purse and the Sword," but this time without any intent of ploughing through the whole book.
