The format of this was so much fun and I absolutely loved the friendship between Avery and Coco. I feel like I don't read about popular /nice/ girls them EVER, so this was a nice change! Funny, cute and all around entertaining, I'd definitely recommend!

Such a fun read!

I haven't read a book with this kind of format and honestly it was so good. I listened to the audiobook and it's a full cast audiobook with amazing narration. It made the story standout more and made it so enjoyable.

Avery is a very sensible character. She is trying to figure out why any of her relationships have not succeeded and interviews all her ex-boyfirends as a project. Throughout the book we see Avery grow and learn things as she processes her past. We see her come to some realizations and it's just so good.

Along with the amazing story it also has an adorable romance!! Which, I'd like to point out, I called form the beginning. All in all, this was a great read and I had so much fun listening to the audio.

A surprisingly fun read. I think this is really cute even though after reading through the first few pages, I was already about 90% sure where the story was headed. And yet, I was still 100% engaged. The format is quite creative because it’s written as an Oral History project submitted by Avery Dennis to her teacher, Ms. Segerson. It’s kind of like the actual transcript of the interview conducted by Avery and her lab partner, Hutch, of all of Avery’s ex-boyfriends to track down why all Avery’s past relationships ended and particularly why Avery’s recent boyfriend broke up with her a few days before prom.

At the surface, it may seem like the writing is lazy but as I thought of it more, it was actually craftier and more detailed because each character gives his/her unadulterated opinion of Avery giving the readers an accurate picture of Avery’s character even though Avery has her Editor’s Note after each interview entry. Lol. The readers also get to know the characters being interviewed through the way they talk and think. It is really so much fun.

Yes, there are stereotypes but you’ll get surprised by what’s mixed in those stereotypes. Avery herself is supposed to be a stereotype,-the popular, and pretty blond but the interviews testify that she’s a passionate athlete, a really smart, funny and kind girl. She’s into Science and makes excellent lab reports. There’s this buff athlete who does ballet and stuff. It’s really sweet and hilarious. Also, there is this adorkable nerd I am sincerely rooting for so everything’s all good.

"Even if something had just happened, it can still be history."

📚 Series? No.
📚 Genre? YA Romance.
📚 Cliffhanger? No.

⚠ Content Warnings: None, safe and very G-rated.

The book is about:
It's Not Me, It's You tells the story of high school popular girl Avery in the format of her Oral History project. She recently broke up with this guy a few weeks before prom and she has never ever been single. So, she wants to analyze her dating history and why these relationships never work. For best results, she decides on actually asking her exes for their thoughts on the matter -- and the adventure begins!

What drew me in:
I picked up this book while I was idly going through reads on Scribd. I was looking for something cute and light.. and this read was definitely cute and light!

Characters & connections:
This book is filled with so many characters and it is hard to go through each one. But, Avery, of course, is the superstar and she made sure that the spotlight was on her. The connection was there.. I felt like she was a friend. Especially in this format, the way that she adds Editor's Note to clear out some things is hilarious.

Everything I liked:
The best thing about this book is its unique format. And if you want to highlight this, the perfect way to do it is through listening to the audio book! It is a full cast recording and was really told like Avery's history project would. It felt like listening to a podcast of some sort. You should definitely use this format when reading the book!

My thoughts on how it wrapped up:
The book is quite short, at 288 pages, and its format can be read as quite a breeze. The pacing was just right, in my opinion, but the ending was a little predictable. Despite that, though, I still had a lot of fun.

Overall thoughts:
In its totality, It's Not Me, It's You was a very entertaining read. It is perfect for early YA readers and it is also a good break for adults (like me haha) that are looking for something clean and light, somewhat an escape to 'serious' and 'heavy' adult reads.

This book. Was fucking. Hilarious.

Highly, highly rec to fellow fans of Tell Me Three Things. I laughed out loud an obnoxious number of times, totally adored Avery, and shipped it so hard. ETA: I see in another review a mention of this having been comped to Clueless, and that's actually a pretty excellent comp. It's been almost a month since I read this book and I can't stop thinking about how much I adored it, so, 5 stars it gets!

I started reading It’s Not Me, It’s You on 8/25/18 and finished it on 8/30/18. Most adorable read! Love the layout. There’s hardly any narrative at all so the read flow easily and quickly! I like the humor and the variety of characters and their backgrounds. I like the unique plot! This book is definitely a fun read, a nice break from reading slumps. Liam’s and Erza’s story are hilarious and Hutch is my favorite commentator. That first boyfriend and Tripp’s story were unexpected, but cute. Coco’s life at home is relatable to many Asian readers. Most of all, the characters in this story have wit!

This book is told in the first person point of view following Avery Dennis, a popular high school senior who always has a boyfriend, until the unexpected incident. Avery is doing an Oral History of her dating life for a school project and she does it by interviewing students, especially all of her ex-boyfriends. Her classmates range from random freshmen to enemies at school sharing their opinions of Avery Dennis. Sometimes Avery adds a few notes to students’ comments to defend herself or expand the idea. Avery wants to understand herself through the perceptions of others.

It’s Not Me, It’s You is a fast paced and laugh out loud read! It definitely has the voice of high school students. All of the characters are likable, even the worst ones. I like the worst ones like Cressida and Becca because their opinions sound reasonable. I like the positive vibes this book gives its readers, reminds me of Kasie West’s books. I think this book is very well written and developed. It sure keeps me hooked. I love the fun cover as well. I like the romance stories, especially not knowing what to expect next. This book is fantastic and I highly recommend everyone to read it!

Pro: fast paced, page turner, positive vibes, humor, high school, boyfriends, diversity, cover,

Con: none

I rate it 5 stars!

Reread thoughts:

Oh my gosh, I forgot how much fun and delightful this book is. If you are ever looking for something so full of heart and light, this book is it. I made a quick impulsive decision to do a reread in an audiobook version, and one of the best reading decisions I’ve ever made.

What epic things do you get with the audiobook? You get a fantastic full cast of characters/voices with just amazing voices. There were certain voices that my ears just lovedddddd. Hutch, Coco, Cressida, and Alex just had such pleasing voices. I also thought everyone else’s voices repped their character so well. Everyone talks about Illuminae having a super cool cast - trust me, this was like the epic contemporary version of it.

Now I’m super torn about whether or not the actual book or the audiobook is my favorite. Both bring so much heart and soul and just fun. Please just read this adorable, fluffy, sunny book. The end.

Original Thoughts:
Okay, another book I totally bought because I was obsessed with the cover - will actually not the cover but what was under the cover. It has this brilliant pink and purple underneath and those two under covers always get me. I LOVE THEM DEARLY, and the moment I saw it at Barnes and Noble in the wild, I knew I would have to own it - and I mean, it does sound epic.

"I was a frosty, unlovable ice queen, incapable of love. I should just build a giant snowman and lock myself in an ice castle and let Coco go off and marry Kristoff." --> DO I SPY AN EPIC DISNEY REFERENCE??????? YES, THE ANSWER IS YES.
Can we talk about how hilarious it was? It was FUNNY and so witty. If I wasn't actually laughing out loud, I was mentally snickering. It fully did remind me of Oscar Wilde's quiet wit that makes fun of cliches and tropes in this way that seems secretive and like you're the only one picking up on the joke. It was totally messing with the mean girl trope, and in between was all kinds of adorableness and cuteness.

Avery was fantastic. She really has a brilliant emotional and mental transformation, and it is the perfect coming of age story. There was some brilliant girl power as well. The rest of the characters were amazing as well. Hutch was ADORABLE, and Coco was a brilliant supporting character. I even was in love with Bizzy who was totally evil. They were just these fun little characters that had me forever giggling.

And here's the thing - this isn't formatted at all like a book. It's more like a play with no setting the stage and just added in thoughts from Avery. It's a transcript of her dating history, and while I was worried about how I would deal without descriptions, the worry ended up being for nothing, because IT WAS BRILLIANT. It made it even more fun, if possible.

I'm going to end with another brilliant quote, but here's the truth: this is a ridiculously easy 5 crown read and it would totally be a favorite if I could remember everything fully. I forgot a good deal, so I don't think that's quite a good sign, so it's a Tiana for now. But it will so be moving up to favorite status when I do a reread - which I totally want to do super soon, much like the next book.

"Then again, it is inconceivable that anyone wouldn't like Princess Bride. Except maybe someone like Bizzy Stanhope, who has no soul. Bizzy Stanhope would probably love to marry Prince Humperdink." --> AND A PRINCESS BRIDE REFERENCE? *forever screaming*

"Because I was realizing that maybe what mattered wasn't whether you were in a relationship or not. What mattered was that you could still be yourself in that relationship."

What a fun book. It's Not Me, It's You is one of the funniest books I’ve read in awhile. The characters are bubbly and the high school drama is entertaining. It’s really a perfect summer book.

Things I Liked :
I really loved the narration style in this story. It’s written as an oral history report, and reads as very conversational. I loved the little editor's notes we get throughout the story. I felt like they really showed some personality for Avery, Coco, and Hutch. The narration reminded me of the Mean Girls when the other students are asked about Regina George or a Zack Morris in Saved By the Bell style narration. It was just so easy to read and flowed really well.

This book is so funny. I actually laughed out loud multiple times. The characters, the situations, the interactions are all enriched with a lively humor. This is a entertaining look at high school drama from mean girls to cliques and dating.

All of the characters felt very distinct, which was impressive in this format. They were all realistic and reminded me of people from high school, even if they were exaggerated a bit. I loved that Avery wasn’t just a boy-obsessed ditzy blond character and that she was more on a quest of self discovery and reflection than about boys.

Things I Didn’t Like :
Despite having such a great time reading this, it was way too easy to stop in the middle of a chapter and do something else. It was so easy to come in and out of the story that I found myself stuck in the middle of a chapter for an hour while I was distracted online or by tv. It’s not a really gripping story, but it definitely is a fun one that is easy to read.

This was such a great reading experience for me and I definitely recommend it. You are guaranteed a fun and fluffy story filled with great characters and a lot of laughs!

This book had a lot of potential and I liked the story. The synopsis sounded super cute and I was definitely intrigued.

This book wasn’t totally for me unfortunately. I liked some parts and the characters, but there are definitely some things I would change.

The characters started out great and I liked them all. I really liked Avery’s attitude and how she was in general. However, throughout the book, there were just wayyy too many characters for me to understand and I really started to not like any of the characters.

The only thing I really loved about this book was the ending. It was super cute and well thought out. I like everything about the ending.

Overall, this book was good but confusing for me. There were too many characters and I had trouble understanding a lot. I’d recommend to readers that enjoy young adult and can keep up with multiple characters.

Here I was, at bookcon looking through the different booths, then I stumbled on this beautiful book. It was an ARC,and it was contemporary, and I was craving a contemporary. This book guys, it is so good! Even better than I expected!
We basically follow one girl's dating history over the years, and she is trying to figure out why the relationships didn't work. This results in hilarious interviews and stories, and they all have tons of charm.
Avery's character may seem super stereotypical, but she also has this sense of relatability, which I loved. I thought this book was super cute, and I won't write a super long review right now, but this book was so good, and I highly recommend it.

It's Not Me, It's You was kind of a cute book to dive into. It's a pretty common saying and for some reason the title alone made me think of the movie, "He's just not that into you." Not sure why but I went with it and hoped that I would end up liking this book.

It worked. I liked it and I have zero regrets about it all.

In it, you will meet Avery Dennis. She was a pretty popular person until someone happened. At this moment, I thought it was going to be very cliché for me and beyond predictable.. but it was surprisingly hilarious and I ate all of it up. Why was it so funny to me? Well she did this project on her entire dating life. Which means she interviewed each and every one of her exes.

I mean, she interviews other classmates - from friends to foes. All of it was very entertaining for me and I didn't even break out the wine yet. I, of course, had a bunch of favorites while listening to this book because some of these kids were extremely funny and relatable.

In the end, I look forward to my next book by Stephanie!

Wow! Was this ever CUTE!

At first I wasn’t really a fan of the writing style, but it grew on me very quickly. The entire book is told with dialogue - there’s no exposition or descriptive writing other than how the characters describe the setting.

Avery was a great character. I liked that she wasn’t just stereotypically “popular” with no depth - she’s also really smart and wants to be liked for more than her looks. She also gets extra points in my book for liking Roman Holiday which is one of my favorite movies of all time. She really did grow as a character as she analyzed her past relationships.

Hutch reminded me of a certain someone. ;) He was so cute and nerdy and sweet. I loved him as a character. His sense of humor was great too.

Some of the ex boyfriends were sillier than the others but I liked that Avery learned something from almost all of them.

Overall I really enjoyed this. I will have to check out some of this author’s other books.

You know what this book was? Cute, cute, and more cute. It was silly, fun, adorable, and happy. It was 288 pages of lightness.

The Format: This book was written in an interview format, so basically the book was Avery's final history paper. I love reading books in unique formats. It's fun to mix it up. Also, I loved all the sarcastic comments and Editor's Notes that came along with each person's perspective.

The Cuteness: So Avery is a mega-popular girl who gets dumped right before prom. To me, that's really no big deal, but I to someone like Avery-- it's something she's been looking forward to for years. To her this is supposed to be one of the most important memory moments of her life. Even though we have differing views on what is an "important moment", I liked Avery. She wasn't the stereotypical mean girl or the dumb blonde. She was smart and nice. She wasn't conceited, she cared about people, and she had a kick-ass BFF. Coco was one of my favorite parts of this book. She quoted JFK constantly and always had her bestie's back.

I loved that this was a positive book. It was Avery looking back on her failed love-life and she didn't have a bad thing to say about any of the dudes. I give her credit for that, because I DEFINITELY can't say the same.

The 2 Things: As much as I loved reading this super-fun book, there were 2 things I would change. 1st-- the ending. I could see it coming by page 30. I still LIKED the ending, but I wish it would've happened in a less Captain Obvious way.

The other thing is that I was wishing for less G-ratedness. When I read YA, I expect a little bit of edginess. Not over-the-top stuff, but this girl had 15 or so boyfriends and everything there was nicey-nice, nothingness. She had a few serious boyfriends, and I would expect that some of those would progress beyond kissing (not that I need every detail, but teens are doing more than kissing), and I would expect some of those to have deeper issues than-- he said I love you and I didn't say it back.

I could never hate on this book though. It would be like kicking a puppy. It's adorable and fun-- totally do-able for Middle Grade readers, but also fun entertainment for older teens.

OVERALL: Loved this lightness and cuteness of this book. Avery was popular and NOT a mean girl-- crazy isn't it?? I loved the format and the characters. Lightness is needed, but I was wishing for a tad more edge or drama-- or maybe just a little less sweetness. It's definitely a book that will give you a toothache.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

I have two words for this book: So. Cute.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t so sure when it started. It was funny right from the beginning, but I didn’t know if I’d be able to enjoy the interview format all the way through. It genuinely is just one long transcript of interviews and commentary. However, after a chapter or two, I was able to relax into it, and it ended up being a lot of fun. The comments here and there from Avery were also hilarious. Honestly, big round of applause to Stephanie, as the format of the book meant she had to tell the complete story in dialogue, and that’s impressive!

Someone else’s review mentioned that the book was similar to the movie Clueless, and while it’s not the same in the sense that Avery isn’t trying to matchmake her way through the book, the overall feel is there. The movie let you live vicariously through the life of a rich girl in high school trying to fix other people while lacking insight into her own life; IT’S NOT ME, IT’S YOU, on the other hand, let you live vicariously through the dating escapes of a rich girl in high school. Of course, the first thing I did after finishing the book was watch Clueless.

Like with Cher in the movie, Avery came across as shallow initially, and yes, I’d probably find her massively annoying in real life. That being said, I couldn’t help but have a lot of respect for her. She was driven and enthusiastic and actually very intelligent. Like Hutch remarked, she saw the best in everyone, even the things people tried to hide. She was so admirable, and her approach to her history assignment was downright inspired.

I had so much fun reading about all of Avery’s stereotypical boyfriends. There were the jocks, the nerd, the cowboy… There was even a passionate Italian fling on holiday and a low-key thing with a TV star! You know those kinds of guys we dream of dating (because I will admit to wanting to ride on the back of a Vespa)? Avery dated them…but they were never right for her.

The ship on these seas was pretty predictable, and I could see it coming from the get-go. That did not, in any way, reduce my enjoyment of the book. If anything, I think I loved it more. The way the feelings were slowly revealed was adorable! And then the big gesture at the end? SWOON. Magical.

Overall, this was a very fun, very swoony, very quick read that helped me get over my ire at the way a certain other series ended! Get this book for a light weekend read if you need something smart and funny and adorable!

As the synopsis states, this story is about a girl who has never been single. NEVER! She's always dating someone, but prom is near and she just got dumped. A class assignment is handed out and Avery decides to do it on her past relationships and why they didn't work out.

Avery's story was slightly comedic and at times, fun. I enjoyed her story and all of her thoughts and footnotes added to the research. I also loved the format of the story! All of the book was written in a sort of interview format. I thought this was a great way to tell Avery's story and I never got lost with the characters and all the ex-boyfriends.

My major complaint is that for 288 pages, this book felt so unbelievably long! It took me 4 days when a book like this could have taken me a day or two. It got to a point that I would get bored and kept reading only to see what the outcome of the story was, which I did like, thankfully.

Overall, It's Not Me, It's You is a very cute novel with a great format, but it felt extremely long for a short book.

I received an eARC from the publisher for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was originally posted on Latte Nights Reviews.

Ahh so shippy and hilarious!!! I'm just going to be over here smiling from the adorbs!!

This was absolutely hilarious and adorable! I was hesitant with the formatting of this one at first but once I got into a groove, I flew through it. I loved all the pop culture references (Mean Girls within the first 5 pages!), how smart all the characters are without being pretentious and the great cast of characters. I wasn't expecting to love Avery as much as I did, what a fantastic main character. Plus I totally ship it. I cannot wait to read more from Strohm.

I wasn't expecting the interview format, but it worked really well for this story and because there was a full cast audio, which is always a plus. This story was very fluffy and light-hearted as main character Avery strives to see where every one of her relationships went wrong by way of interviewing each of her exes. I couldn't imagine doing that myself, and this could have gone really, really wrong, but all in all it was cute and the perfect way to start off the Monday after Spring Break. It's also entirely predictable...but in an adorable way so I kinda didn't mind.
