Steve Milton's current series:
Badboy Gay Mafia Hot guys don't follow the straight and narrow.
Collins Avenue Confidential Alissa Bennett is a matchmaker for Miami's most selective gay men.
So, this is a gay, satirical, fairy tale love story. Or something like that. Anyhow, if you try to read it like a Romance (TM) it can only end in tears (and not the good kind). There is only one other book (that I actually remember) where this combination worked and that is The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story - I love that book.
This one - eh - not so much. To thine own self be true is an honourable concept and it is kind of the core of this book. It just didn't work particularly well because the story was so incredibly rushed. I could have gotten onboard with the idea of a Republican presidential candidate throwing over his campaign for love or for actually just being desperate to be himself - that is a story I would like to read. Here it rang hollow to me because there just wasn't enough freaking time to explore that. The same is true for the satirical aspects. I suppose there were a lot of things that were going on in the author's head but until he tells them to me, I just have no freaking way of knowing what they are.
Hard to rate. Reg was not a likeable character. Not a fan of the inconsistencies which is the type of thing that drives me nuts. A few proofing errors. The sex at the end was fairly hot.
An amazing reading, touching subjects like the need to stay closeted and how detrimental that need is for anyone's' mental health.
I love Alissa, matchmaker extraordinaire, and how she seems to be able to see well under the surface. Otherwise, how could she ever dream that gay activist, Liberal Clint and deep, deep closeted Republican candidate could turn to be such a match?
I'm going through this series in an out-of-order way (shame on me!), but this hasn't diminished a bit my enjoyment of these books. They are all populated with great, layered, complex characters, and compelling plots. So, yes, I wholeheartedly recommend this one, too
Great story that I really enjoyed from beginning to end. Great storyline filled with drama, humor, and hot and steamy sex scenes. Reg and Clint are wonderful characters with lots of chemistry and are perfect for each other. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
Reg Tarry is a republican presidential hopeful who has been in the closet all of his 37 years - he's even running on an anti-gay platform! But he's lonely and his hand just isn't doing the job. His friend Alissa runs Collins Avenue Confidential, a gay matchmaking service, and he entrusts her to help find he someone. Alissa finds Clint, a democrat law student who is openly gay - talk about opposites attracting, huh? This story was very short and there wasn't much time to get to know the characters. I didn't really care much for Reg, but I did like Clint. The dialogue was kinda cheesy and I thought only girls called it "his manhood," but I guess not!
Gay politics or gay politician? It still take two to love it.
Reg has a problem. As a politician, he has kept his gay life in the closet, so buried that it is eating him up inside, and threatening to destroy his political life. After confiding in Alyssa, he is introduced to Clint, a political intern for a local politician for the other party. In spite of opposite viewpoints, opposites attract like magnetic poles, flipping around to become inseparable and electrifying the donors, politicians, electorate, and the polls as a whole new issue radically changes the political playing field. Don't forget to register to vote in this hot new battleground that will change politics and gay life forever. Cast your vote for this book now.
There is a potentially good plot, here, together with two potentially powerful leads. Unfortunately there are also a huge number of repetitions and a more than questionable use of adjectives (the effect can sometimes become hilarious). Everything is also far too rushed to be even slightly believable.
uh, this was the most boring book i've read for months. i was 70 percent done and still nothing has happened. The author spends pages upon pages telling me Reg is a politican and he's not out and a politican and soo closeted and it drives him crazy that he can't be out because he's in the politics.... this word is used a million times! And thats not all, for example i counted "law" about 6 or 7 times in one (!) sentence. Sorry, but if you jump over 3 pages, continue reading and have nothing missed... i think that tells everything. A story that runs like chewing gum. No wonder it was for free, you won't make money with that kind of sh...
***2016 has been a very unstable year. Not only have I lost favourite role models in droves, I have been into dark places more times than I could count. Yes, I experienced highlights as well but the darkness has had a big impact this year and the only way to keep it at bay was reading, mass reading, back to back books with no stopping and no reviewing. I do apologize to all the writers that I won’t be able to review their books yet but I will get to it. Promise!***
A closeted gay Republican running for President? I guess that could happen, and that’s the premise for Steve Milton’s “Swing State.” Reginald Tarry is the Republican frontrunner....
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. And I loved it!
Steve Milton has a knack for writing gay feel-good romance with complex characters, and this is no exeption.
Reg Tarry is a successful politician who keeps his sexuality a secret. Even though he throws himself into work and has a girlfriend, he feels something missing from his life. After Alissa introduce him to Clint, a young openly gay lawstudent, everything changes.
This is a funny and entertaining read filled with steamingly hot scenes, a lot of humorous dialog and insta-atraction.
