OK I worked through this second tedious installment of the System States Rebellion. The story is quite interesting, but I cannot stay engaged due to the writing style.
Dietmar Wehr has created a surprising finish to his System States Rebellion. The series is based on H Beam Piper's future history detailed in stories such as The Cosmic Computer and Space Viking. In Dietmar Wehr's series there are some twists that occur that take this space opera in an entirely different direction. In this final book mankind is divided into the Federation which has defeated the rebels, and a new foe has arisen the Empire. The Empire is overthrowing the Federation on the advice of a supercomputer in order to save humanity from falling into anarchy. There is a joker in this deck. The computer has an agenda of its own and begins to takeover and enslave humanity and plans on exterminating a large part of mankind. There is a group of rebels that is fighting back and Rumors of Salvation is the story of that struggle. This book is a return to the space opera sagas of the past with a steady stream of action and for those who have read Piper a constant wondering of where is this going and how will it end. I have really enjoyed this story and hope it continues. There are so many new ways that the future history can turn out and Dietmar Wehr has become a master in this field. A word of advice, if you have not read the first two books get them all and read them in order to get the most enjoyment.
Those left between the Federation and the System States trying to fight off the new Emperor and his Empire learn a disturbing truth. The Emperor is being used, by a computer. A computer that has from the very beginning been lying to those that created it to take control of it's human creators. After having people implanted with a device that allowed the computer to control them, Earth is destroyed by a bio-weapon at the computers orders. Ships are sent out to deliver the weapon to other planets. But a small group of Federation and SSU survivors band together to bring down the computer which has a ship created to allow it to go anywhere in space. Now they just have to hope they can stop the computer and it's bio-weapon before it is too late.
This book focuses on the bigger picture. Just the main points, almost like a history text. Character development and emotion is secondary. I couldn't read books like this all the time, but it is a nice change of pace one in a while
I really enjoyed this series. Some things hurt like the limited time you get to know certain characters. I would say that the ending was a little more abrupt but the author's comments at the end gave some perspective.
Lots of twists I was not expecting at all. Sad to see some key actors die. However, it is war. I loved the book. I can't wait till the next series. Great job of writing!
A trilogy that actually ends as a trilogy, not just more cliffhangers. I like the constant actions, just what a space opera should be. Very fine writing and not very many misspellings. I will be getting his other books.
