Mr. Putter & Tabby Hit the Slope

Rate this book
Mr. Putter and his fine cat, Tabby, like winter. But when the snow is deep outside and there’s nothing to do inside, even a cozy winter day can be a little slow. Not for long! When Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog, Zeke, pull two sleds out of the garage, the four friends head for the sledding slope for the wildest ride ever. Maybe winter is not so slow after all!

An author of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for children and young adults as well as an author and author/illustrator of picture books for children, Cynthia Rylant is recognized as a gifted writer who has contributed memorably to several genres of juvenile literature. A prolific author who often bases her works on her own background, especially on her childhood in the West Virginia mountains, she is the creator of contemporary novels and historical fiction for young adults, middle-grade fiction and fantasy, lyrical prose poems, beginning readers, collections of short stories, volumes of poetry and verse, books of prayers and blessings, two autobiographies, and a biography of three well-known children's writers; several volumes of the author's fiction and picture books are published in series, including the popular "Henry and Mudge" easy readers about a small boy and his very large dog.

Rylant is perhaps most well known as a novelist. Characteristically, she portrays introspective, compassionate young people who live in rural settings or in small towns and who tend to be set apart from their peers.

My student laughed so hard at Tabby’s facial expressions during this book, and also when I told her that in Canada we call sleds Toboggans.

Poor Tabby! Her tail twitched all the way down the hill but at least everyone got muffins and cream after their very tumultuous adventure.

I think I've read only one other of these books and it struck me that this is a popular children's series about and old man and his cat. How have I missed that all these years! How fantastic! I'm so glad they're still popular. Kids these days more and more read and interact with perspectives that mirror their own too much. In this one, Mr. Putter goes sledding for the first time in God knows how many years. He has a good time but once down the slope is enough.

After I read this book aloud to my first graders, I couldn't keep a single Cynthia Rylant book on my shelves. It's terrific.

Mr. Putter and Tabby are back in a winter adventure. Mr. Putter is finding winter boring until he remembers the fun he had sledding in his younger days. As he has no sled, he phones Mrs. Teaberry who is happy to lend him two, one for her and himself and one for the pets. Twitchy Tabby is soon careening down a hill on sled commandeered by Zeke, with Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry in hot pursuit. Tabby’s horrific ride, that ends with her up a tree, is assuaged by the après-sledding ritual of a warm bath, cream and muffins for her and Mr. Putter. The expressive and bright watercolor illustrations, coupled with the age appropriate format and vocabulary, create a timeless read for emerging readers of any generation. This beginning chapter book is a good choice for library and classroom collections.

Its wintertime and Mr. Putter & Tabby are a little bored. There are no flowers to tend to or berries to pick. So Mr. Putter thinks "What can we do in the wintertime?" He thinks back to when he was a little boy and remembers how much fun he and his friends had sledding! So they decide to find a sled in Mrs. Teaberry's garage and go sledding! Zeke and Tabby go on a sled together and Mrs. Teaberry & Mr. Putter share another one. They have a lot of fun going down the big hill- so much fun, in fact, that they are exhausted. They go home, take a nice warm bath, eat a snack and have a good nights sleep. The illustrations are so cute! Seeing Mr. Putter as a child is so hilarious. And Tabby wears a sweater to keep warm which is so funny!

Rylant, Cynthia. Mr. Putter and Tabby Hit the Slope, PICTURE BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016. $14.99.

Mr. Putter enjoys winter time, but he feels a bit bored. He knows he was always busy in the winter as a young boy, so he decides to recreate that feeling with Tabby and go sledding. Mrs. Teaberry, his neighbor has sleds and is always up for adventure. They decide to go to the snowy hill together and feel the rush of speeding down. This is a cute little series that I hadn’t happened to see before, and there are a lot of titles listed in the back. It is in a short chapter book format.

Number one, I think it's important for kids to read about a wide variety of people - not only people who don't look like them (though seeing themselves represented is truly important, as well) but also people who aren't the same age as they are. So I love the fact that this series about an older man and his cat is so popular.
Number two, I'm a little nervous at how much I feel like Mr. Putter sometimes. I remember sledding as a kid with great gusto, but when it's time to actually bundle up in the cold, slide down the hill, and trudge all the way back up, I feel about twice my age.

Mr. Putter and Tabby enjoy sled riding on the slopes with his friend and neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry.
This is another installment in the adventures of Mr. Putter and his cat Tabby. Pencil, watercolor, and gouache illustrations are paired with simple text to make a lovely story. The story line is believable and humorous. Fans of this pair will enjoy this story. It would be a perfect extension for snowy day theme. Recommended for grades 1 through 3.

Mr. Putter and Tabby always make me smile. Rylant has perfected the very difficult task of beginning reader writing and winning loyal fans. My 6-year old grandson is SUCH a fan of Mr. Putter and we've been waiting for this new snowy installment for months. Can't wait to share it with him this week! Cowabunga!

Mr. Putter and Tabby are feeling a little bored and tired of the long winter. Where is the fun and enjoyment of cold and snow? Mr. Putter decides to recreate a pleasant childhood memory with a sledding adventure. He invites his favorite neighbor, Mrs.Teaberry and her dynamic dog Zeke. Sledding is a great idea until they get to the top of the slope. What will happen?

If adventure is to be had, look to Mr. Putter and his cat Tabby. Okay, look next door to Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog, Zeke. Between them, there is fun and adventure, with a little feline tail-twitching and tea at the end of the day.

In this adventure, nothing goes as it seems - but a look at Mrs. Teaberry’s garage reminds us that it never does, but it’s still more fun than you expect.

Favorite bit of the book:
"Mr. Putter wanted Tabby to ride the sled with him.
Tabby was not so sure.
Her tail was very, very twitchy.
Mr. Putter tried to put her on the sled.
He thought she would like it

[Page break]

Tabby was not liking it."

That last line. :D

Lovely book. The animals have some human acts, but the problems and solutions in the book come across as realistic, especially for little sledding kids. Nice pictures. Simple ideas.
