About the author

Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.

Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.

Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.

Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.

I love how these wonderful cartoon strips have been reprinted as single episodes, enlarged slightly and coloured. They are so beautiful to look through, I hope they reprint all of them like this.

In this adventure Little My finds a box of tropical seeds. Moominmamma plants them and the hot weather really encourages their growth. There are some wonderful moments in this book, I love Tove's sense of humour, the tigers and snake were so funny. This is a really fun, creative story, best read in a hammock on a hot day!

(Yet another) great volume. This series has been super consistent up, hopefully all of Tove Jansson's run is. Here the Moomin's face a heatwave... combined with some imported seeds being spread around, and a big rainfall and now the valley is a jungle! Stinky lets the exotic animals loose from the Zoo so they can eat the Moomins for him. Thankfully the characteristic friendliness of the Moomin's slowly wins over all the animals.

A botanist comes to catalogue these new plants and has a fight with a zoologist over the categorization of a carnivorous plant.

Later the Zoo on their way to capture the animals identifies the Moomin's as hippopotamuses and wants to throw them in the Zoo!

I feel the cartooning keeps getting better. Super clear illustrations with a lot of charm.

Libro de viñetas corto, de apenas 37 páginas, que se lee muy rápido. Lo conseguí gracias a la Masa Crítica de Babelio.

Los protagonistas son los Mumin, una suerte de trolls, con aspecto de hipopótamo (por mucho que ellos digan que no lo son), personajes que la autora creó en 1939, publicados por primera vez en 1945 y por última vez en 1979. Son tiras cómicas, viñetas, que en su época tuvieron mucho éxito.

Personalmente no les veo la gracia, más que la novedad de leer algo que no conocía. Aunque imagino que si los cojo de niña igual sí me habrían gustado; a saber. No niego que resulta entretenido por lo curioso, pero se queda ahí. No he conectado con ellos, seguramente por no haber leído nada de este tema anteriormente, ya que no conocía los personajes.

As with most surrealist/absurdist work—which I would qualify this as, though it’s on the tame side—it either connects emotionally or it doesn’t. I don’t think I get this one, and I’m not sure who I could say it’s for. This is a good book, I feel. I think I just err more on the Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron side of these sorts of dreamlike worlds.

Not that a great children’s book needs a sense of morality or lesson, but with the length and somewhat restrained silliness, I don’t know that I’d read this to kids too often. As an adult, it didn’t do much for me. The art is wholesome and delightfully storybook styled, and the Moomins reminds me of something I might see in Bone.

If nothing else! This was a quick and painless read, so it’s worth checking out and finding if you’re a fan. I can see why people would like its whimsy and low-commitment fun!

Як і всі твори Туве Янсон, цей комікс цікавий і для дітей, і для дорослих: кожен побачить у ньому щось своє. Кумедна історія про співчутливих мумі-тролів, яким вдалося потоваришувати навіть із хижими тропічними звірами.

Totally charming - Drawn & Quarterly are re-printing some of the the Moomin comics in full-colour editions and if you haven't read any of Jansson's comic strip versions of the Moomin stories this is a fabulous way to do it (and don't forget the nice full sized though only b & w collected Moomin comics too!)

Dec/14 - re-reading my way through the Jansson oeuvre - I love the comics because there is a wonderful element of pure slapstick that is sometimes hinted at in the novels but is never given the reign it is in the comics - here a case of tropical seeds turns Moominvalley into a jungle and wicked Stinky frees all the tropical animals from the zoo with hilarious consequences but I love how the zoo-keepers keep insisting that Moomins are a kind of hippo and to find out whether scientists agree, you'll have to read the comic for yourself!

I loved this book because it was super funny and I liked the art.
My favourite character was Moomin.
I also loved the way the tigers were drawn because it made them look really cute.

Съвсем малко автори умеят да съчетават така добре щури приключения и семеен уют. И никой друг не владее нейния топъл и философски сарказъм. Туве Янсон е икона на скандинавската литература и явление в европейската илюстрация и комикс. А след като преведоха от шведски нейната биография плюс "Туве Янсон. Думи, образи, живот", както и цели четири книги на с нейни произведения за възрастни („Дъщерята на скулптора”, „Честна измама”, „Куклената къша”, „Пътуване с лек багаж”), от изд. „Жанет 45” решиха, че е време да ни зарадват и с част от комикс поредицата за емблематичните обитатели на Муминската долина! У дитинстві комікси були моєю пристрастю, а у домашній бібліотеці їх було більше, аніж книг. Я обожнювала комікси про діснеївського селезня Дональда Дака, його сім'ю і друзів, які проживають в місті Дакбург, та інших класичних персонажів. Особливо мадам Мім :) Про мумі-тролів Туве Янссон я знала лиш те, що у листопаді вони набивають животики сосновими голками і залягають у сплячку.

Дивовижний світ, у якому живуть казкові герої, Янссон вигадала під час Другої світової війни. Тоді ця вигадана реальність виявилася рятівною. Минулого року у видавництві «Основи» вперше українською вийшов комікс «Джунглі в долині Мумі-Тролів» – історія про те, як до берега прибило скриню з тропічним насінням. Звісно, я вже виросла, але комікс вийшов таким же добрим як і книги авторки – з місцем і для повчальної моралі, і для казки.

I love the Moomins so much and yet somehow this is the first time I've ever read any of the comics. And it's darling, but I think I prefer the prose. Words convey the gentleness and good feelings moreso than the drawings (with the exception of Moominmamma, who is ever calm and welcoming regardless of situation). But preferring the prose over the comic isn't saying much because I adore both. It's a fun, quick read.

With all the excitement online about the movie, I decided to read some of the series! I love the Moomins. I think they were what I was feeling so nostalgic for the first time I saw a Ghibli film. It's the same vibe of gentle freedom and beautiful nature and loving family.

Соромно зізнатися, але до того, як я побачила цю книжечку українською, я навіть не здогадувалася, що про мумі-тролів є ще й комікси! Я, звичайно, вже давно прочитала всі дев'ять повістей із канону, які написала і прикрасила свої чудовими ілюстраціями найвідоміша фінська казкарка Туве Янссон. Насправді нічого дивного в тому, що вона подалася у комікси, немає, адже її лаконічний, але дуже симпатичний стиль малюнку дуже добре підходить для цього формату. Зрештою, це ще одна історія про улюблених мумі-тролів і їхніх друзів, просто цього разу візуальне превалює над текстовим. У цій книжечці все починається з того, що посаджене Мамою Мумі-троля звечора тропічне насіння на ранок виростає і перетворює затишну Долину мумі-тролів на справдешні джунглі! А лиходійка Мара ще й випускає із зоопарку справжніх звірів, тож маємо і флору, і фауну. ) Це, як завжди у Туве Янссон, дещо сюрреалістична історія, але у ній знайшлося місце і для гумору. А ще вона раз і на завжди закриває питання, яке мучить багатьох шанувальників серії: чи мумі-тролі родичі бегемотів?

The comic strip addresses many ecological questions, the most important of which is whether or not Moomins are related to hippopotamuses...
