Adventure Time: Sugary Shorts Vol. 1 by Paul Pope

Star rating: ★★★★ ☆ 4/5 stars

Format: library graphic novel

Summary: A collection of short stories about Adventure Time.

Review: I went into this knowing it was just a collection of short stories rather than a cohesive story arc so I didn't feel like I was missing out on something or that it was lacking in any way. The stories range in length, some are only one page long. Of course the one story that has PB and Marceline interact is one page long. There is however, one pretty good sized story starring Tree Trunks and a bunch of stories featuring LSP, both of which are my two favorite characters. So that was pleasing.

The stories are cute, some try to give a sort of moral and some are just silly and end on a joke. I like both and he less serious stories were probably the best for me. The one page stories were not very good, there was not much to them, a lot I didn't get and kinda just went "okay, am I missing a page?" Because it felt like there should be more to them.

The art varies a lot in this collection, each story is done by a different artist. I liked some styles more than others but there weren't any that I absolutely could not stand. And considering how picky I can get about art in my graphic novels, that was a great feat.

I read half the book out loud to my daughter, until she lost interest and had to go play. Usually I'm not a fan of reading comics out loud but these stories weren't bad. And I discovered for a person terrible at impressions, I do an okay LSP voice. Oh my glob.

If you're looking for an overarching story, you won't find it in this. It's just a bunch of short, cute stories about the people of Ooo. It's fun and mostly not serious, it's a great quick, pick me up read for fans of the show.

Recommendation: I saw mixed reviews on this collection on goodreads so what I recommend is go into this with the knowledge they are just short little stories in an anthology. As long as you keep that in mind and you're a fan of the show I think this is a really enjoyable read.

A collection of short stories based on the adventures of Finn & Jake. A varied collection by a range of artists creates a colourful ensemble of delightful tales. Some stories are better than others and a few are very weird but the average quality of the stories is very high.
A great book for fans of Adventure Time and an interesting, surreal graphic novel for those who are unfamiliar with the characters.

Like a grab-bag of five-cent sweets, this is a delightful read best devoured all at once. That way the occasional liquorice flavour is easily masked by the more tasty and well-crafted flavours.

This book was SO much better than I thought it would be. I've only ever seen a few episodes of the TV show, but when I saw this on sale I decided I may as well give it a go. I figured it would probably be a 3 or 4 star read, but honestly it was perfect.

This is a compilation of short comics, ranging from 1 page to about 15 pages, with the average length being around 6 pages I reckon. The thing I love most is that nearly all of the stories are written and illustrated by different people, so throughout the course of the book you get exposed to loads of different art styles. My favourite thing about graphic novels is seeing the way the artist has chosen to draw the panels, so seeing so many different choices based in a similar world was an absolute dream.

The stories were funny, ridiculous, and very enjoyable. Because they were so short it was great at holding my attention, and I kept on saying "just one more before I go to bed" because the pacing was brilliant.

I wholeheartedly love this, and would recommend it to pretty much anyone.

Quite interesting to see the accumulation of many artists different takes on these beloved characters. Never thought too much about all that went into creating this to be a broadcast series, just knew that there were comics. I'm actually disappointed in myself for taking this long to be curious. I've rewatched the series too many times to count, own merch, and even the entire Fortnite collection. This series really does ignite lots of joy in me, it is a lifelong favorite that started airing in my childhood like many. I hope this series follows me wherever I go and I have had so much joy getting a glimmer behind-the-scenes almost with how some episodes were thought about! There are so many plots created by separate writers and artists, these shorts can lend help & show how the show came to be. I'm just starting my comic journey, and this was the first thing I picked up. I'm now working my way through more of the collection, absolutely obsessed!

This was a cute set of very short Adventure Time Stories. If you're looking for something written with an adult audience in mind you will be disappointed. I really enjoyed seeing the characters drawn in all the different artist's styles though.

A lot of fun for Adventure Time fans. It's cool to see all the various art styles and story ideas, and super fast to read through. I liked some stories and art styles more than others, but it's just personal preference.

There were a few solid stories in this collection, like visit to the land of the dead. For the most part though, I would have liked some better writing/more story-centric shorts.

One of the very few short comic anthologies that I've liked. I viewed this as a look into what goods on every day in the land of Ooo.

Great short stories if you love adventure time. I’ve seen some reviews say it’s childish but it’s just adventure time right ☺️

I'm not really a big fan of adventure time but this is super cute. I finished it in one sitting basically by accident. I'd definitely read more in this series

For an anthology comic, this is impressively even. I think I skimmed one story.

It was fine. Nothing really to write home about. There were a few cute shorts. But overall, just fine. Four stars because Adventure Time and the art is lovely.

This handsome hardcover volume collects the short stories from the first 14 issues of Adventure Time. In any short story collection you're going to enjoy some more than others, but the average quality here is quite good, I think because every artist comes across as a big fan of the show and its characters. Zac Gorman's three single-page slice-of-life strips are fabulous--They have a vibe similar to SuperMutant Magic Academy and I'd love a whole collection of them! Other favorites are the mathematical time-travel stories: "Emit Erutnevda," by Paul Pope, is a visually stunning experimental tale featuring Finn and Jake, and "Time Waits for No One," by Shannon Wheeler, is an deceptively simple dialogue between PB and BMO. "Bacon Fields," by Michael Deforge, is a deliciously surreal showdown between two of my favorite princesses: LSP and Breakfast Princess. Frank Gibson and Becky Dreistadt send yet another princess on an Orphean quest through the underworld in "Happy Birthday Hot Dog Princess": it features my favorite art in the collection and perfectly demonstrates what the short story format can do for a minor character. And seeing Jon Gibson and Jim Rugg launch a wizard's lair sale in "Hot Deals in Ice Kingdom," I am tempted to drop everything and take up colored pencils myself.

Variant covers introduce each story, but the gorgeous images are inexplicably zoomed and cropped, and their connection to the story that follows is pretty random. Is this the issue in which the story originally appeared? I would rather see the covers collected in an appendix and presented in full glory. Half star deduction.

I'm not generally looking for high art when it comes to Adventure Time comics, just something fun that's true to the show. Unfortunately, this is the first time my response was a resounding meh to one of the spin-off graphic novels. There are a few shorts that really captured the Adventure Time spirit, but mostly they were just too brief to really make an impression on me. Given the ranking for this book on Goodreads, I suspect I might be an outlier, so if you're a fan or just looking for a kid friendly comic book, this still might be a good option! But I'll be sticking to the longer narrative books from now on.
