Ellen Carter deeply grieves for her husband Dan, but at least she still has Dixie, her beloved Malinois. However, soon Dixie leaves her too. But the faithful dog cannot rest easy in heaven while her mistress is unhappy. Dixie pleads with the Archangel Michael to let her send help, and intercedes for Ellen in the only way she can. But will Ellen get the message, and more importantly, will she accept Dixie's gift?
Sexy newcomer Michael Burke can barely take enough time from his successful restaurant for a decent night's sleep, let alone romance. Still, he is intrigued by the beautiful widow and can't resist entering her shop. Sparks fly, and when Ellen has an accident in a snowstorm, he comes to her rescue. Trapped by a blizzard and aided by Dixie's Gift, Ellen and Michael find more than shelter--they find love.
I’m Barbara Edwards and a native New Englander. I’m a graduate of the University of Hartford with a Master’s degree in Public Administration. I write poetry for myself and novels when I need to tell a longer tale. I’m fascinated by the past so naturally turned to writing historical romance. The dark paranormal stories evolve from nightmares. The romance comes from my belief in people’s basic goodness and longing for love. I lived in Florida for several years and am past president of the Central Florida Romance Writers and a member of Romance Writers of America. When I returned to Connecticut, I founded the Charter Oak Romance Writers, a Chapter of Romance Writers of America, along with several close friends. My husband is a retired Police Sergeant. We share an interest Civil War re-enacting and travel the Eastern states to participate in events. I love visiting museums, galleries and battle sites, gathering information for my stories. I taught Romance Writing at Manchester Community college for three years. I’m fond of gardening and growing antique roses with limited success. Most of my exercise is when my Belgian Shepherd, Dixie, demands a walk.
Ellen is grieving for her husband and her dog, Dixie that she has lost. She is not really living her life. She is kind of just existing and knows she needs to do something but just can’t get out of the funk she is in.
Dixie is at heaven’s doors and decides not to go in. She needs to help Ellen. She sees how much pain she is in and wants to help her start living again.
Michael is the answer to Dixie’s prayers. Michael helps Ellen up after she falls outside her store in the snow. She is favoring her knee and Michael is concerned she needs to go to the Emergency Room. Ellen isn’t having it. She makes her way home but not before making Michael promise to call her when he gets home. The storm is getting pretty bad out.
Michael worries that Ellen is going to be stuck in her house from the snowstorm and brings her a generator to make sure she is ok. When he gets to her house, he finds a little puppy there and brings him inside. Ellen thought the dog was Michaels and vice versa. They wind up taking care of him until they can find his family. Michael decides to go out to the store and get groceries for Ellen and winds up stranded at her house. This makes for an interesting evening.
I loved this heartwarming story. Ellen and Michael both were not living their lives to the fullest. One was still grieving and the other was so busy working his life was passing him by. I also loved Dixie trying to help her mistress. This story was very short but it was very touching and I couldn’t put the book down. I highly recommend it.
*I received this book free for an honest review. I have no personal connection to the author.* Dixie’s Gift is a short, sweet, holiday romance. It targets all age groups and has a heat level of sweet, (just a hint PG13). This story covers the meeting and budding relationship between Mike, a lonely restaurateur, Ellen, a grieving boutique owner, and Dixie, a canine angel. It moves from tragedy to tender triumph in a night of disastrous mishaps, a severe snow storm, and a found puppy. As strange as that sounds, it could and should be made into a Hallmark movie. Have tissues on hand. The author, Barbara Edwards, has crafted this beautiful tale not to give all the answers and fix all the problems in one night, but to give a promise of happily-ever-after-someday-soon.
Dog lovers, do not read this book . . . without a box of tissues nearby. After losing her husband, Ellen still had her faithful dog, Dixie, to keep her company and help her through the loneliness. But last summer, Dixie died. Alone, with no one, Ellen withdraws from life. Dixie knows she can’t move on until her mistress is happy again.
New to town and feeling like a teen again, Michael finally works up the gumption to talk to Ellen. Then he rescues her when she falls. When a nasty nor’easter traps them together, his wish to get to know her better comes true.
Hovering near by, Dixie rescues them twice. When she realizes that Ellen will no longer be alone, her job is done.
A perfect read to get you in the spirit even if it's not Chirstmas - but especially appreciated at Christmas! All the characters, including Dixie and Junior really got to me and the chemistry between Ellen and Michael evolved very naturally. I love a book that leaves me smiling and telling friends about it, and this was certainly one to share.
This quick and rather sweet Christmas romance will tug at every dog lover's heart. The spirit of Ellen's dog, Dixie, plays matchmaker because she doesn't want her to be lonely. It was well written and I had wished it was longer. It reminded me of the start of a Hallmark romance. The parts with Dixie were my favorite.
