Timed to be launched at 2009 General Convention, Juan Oliver definitive look at the history and potential future of Latino ministry in the Episcopal Church comes at an opportune time. With Latino ministries growing around the country in all traditions, and with increasing resource and programmatic offerings being allocated to serve those communities, this highly descriptive handbook profiles the culture, faith, and importance of this emerging minority.
Within the book chapters, Oliver surveys topical areas, such
Who/What is a Latino? Latino Biblical Interpretation Worship in a Latino congregation The spiritual lives of Latinos Latino authority and governance Latino administration and stewardship The Latino Factotum or Specialist? The Latino deacon The Latino bishop Non-Latinos in Latino ministry
This was read for a Latino/a competency course. It provided clear and understandable information regarding Latino/a Christians and how their faith, cultures, generations, and language usage overlaps. It was very helpful.
Accessible, encouraging, and hopeful for Anglo clergy and laity to be a part of the future of the church, which is decidedly Latino based on census data!
A very informative book on many different aspects of Latino involvement in the episcopal church. The author does a very good job of showing the best and worst aspects of Anglo stereotypes and foibles in dealing with a different culture. The book is a quick read but one that should be required reading for anyone preparing for parish ministry.
