Jella, an octopus, is the rightful ruler of Zypher, a kingdom in the sea. But her father was killed and the kingdom was taken over by the evil Chiro. She has no one left but her two little friends, Qwerty and Bingo. Now the task of winning back Zypher and freeing the people is up to her.
Marina is an eminent scientist who has no clue about her contributions to the world. Her inventions are placed in the wrong hands, posing a huge threat to everybody.
Jella finds Marina stabbed and left to die in her sea. In a magical intervention, together they discover each other’s life experiences - but will they be able to reclaim their destiny?
Though 'Merjella' by Yuvaraja is written for kids/young adults, it is a refreshing read for any age group. Merjella can remind us why fantasy is still the best genre to read.
Story started with an octopus Jella, who had ability to become Jellopus (octopus with magical powers). She was living far from her birthright Zypher with her friends. Her life changed when one of her octopus friend went to Zypher to challenge evil Chiro. Her friend got defeated and she was forced to go in hiding. During this Jella accidentally met Mariana (a human). Mariana was stabbed in her back and she was thrown in sea. When Jella tried to save Mariana they both merged in each other and became a new species called MereJella. Because of this fusion Jella got magical powers. And became Jellopus in real sense.
I got the book in a giveaway. I am all about fantasy and the premise of the story got me hooked in instantly. However, I had apprehensions whether the content would be mature enough. Two chapters in, those doubts were cleared. It is always refreshing to come across such books which you can enjoy with your peers as well as your much younger siblings. Beneath all the adventure and escapade lies a very innocent undertone, which keeps validating your conscience and tantalizing your curiosity. It explores practically all the corners of the heart and presents a roller-coaster ride through a sea of emotions, but in an interesting manner. We don't get a lot of books like that these days. So, kudos to the author for spinning a tale so unconventional and bewitching.
This book I will 5 stars because 1. The concept of the story. The story is a unique one! Um, classic but the concept is rarely found. I never read any book of such concept.
2. Ending at the best time. Okay, so the ending of the story took at the right place. No messing around the story.
3. Perfect for all ages. This book will be highly praised by every age. ( At least I find it ) No age limit!
4. Characters! The characters are very sweet. Even the villain of the story is sweet. All the characters placed nicely.
Thank you to the author for a free review copy of Merjella in exchange for an honest review There are some books that, despite not written for your age group, succeed in touching your heart. They have this amazing story that just makes you appreciate the genre 'fantasy' so much more. And, lastly, they are the books that justify why reading is the best hobby in the world. For me, the best part about Merjella was that, although it can be categorized as a book more suitable for kids because of its story, this book managed to captivate me. It is apparent that the author has a vivid and beautiful imagination. Merjella is mainly about a jello-pus (a blend between octopuses and jellyfishes) who merges (yes, merges), with a woman named Marina to make the most powerful creature that will save the land beneath the sea from evil. To clairfy: Jellopuses and malojels are the two most powerful species among octopuses and jellyfish. They can transform any life into any other and into any shape and into any dimension. They can go invisible themselves and also make others vanish. They can extend their lifespan by two ways: saving lives and destroying lives It sounds plain enough but the author ensures you are interested by using a blend of very refined vocabulary, a well thought out plot and colorful characters (both from the inside and outside). The story contains a series of events, both on Earth and under the sea. With characters like Sandy, the nosy woman to Ryan, the man who thought of himself as an expert on fishes, Deimos, Marina's husband, Qwerty the quirky fish who won't take shit from anyone and Bingo, the novel makes you want to keep reading. Merjella had these awesome powers like being able to turn back time, save people and make people invisible that made me wish I were a jellopus too. I liked one particular scene where the author had Merjella rewind time to prevent a blast that could have killed hundreds on a train. With this much terrorism in the world and many dying every day due to bomb blasts, its nice to even imagine that they could be turned back. I liked how the book ended with Merjella fulfilling her prophecy, which her father had predicted for her. This book is suitable for people of all ages and can be read in a single sitting. The best aspect is that the author included these tit bits about sea creatures at the end of each chapter that helped me understand the marine life a lot better.
**I received this book from the author in a giveaway for goodreads.com first read for exchange of honest review** I really thank the Author for sending me a copy of his book with such nice packaging and giving me an opportunity to read his book !! First of all for me page quality of a book really matters. The page quality of this book is very nice and wonderful quality compared to even penguin giants , the paperback almost feels like light hard cover to me and I really liked the quality of the book binding and presentation.
Coming to the novel When I came to know it's a book about Magic and sea life I was interested . It is all about the life in the sea and it shows how honest friendship makes our life nice , strong and beautiful.Life under the sea has always fascinated me but I thought it is a book only for kids only but to my surprise I have to write Yes! I liked it so much. It has nice twist and turns at some places. The knowledge shared in between the story about sea animals and plants are very interesting, quite unique and I am sure kids would love the way the story and book is a made like a appropriate mixture of knowledge along with a gripping story shared beautifully by the author. The story is quite simple and has nice lucid words to understand . It is made interesting for all ages though its a perfect book for kids and young teenagers. The author portraits the situations and characters like Jella and her cute friends nicely and interesting leading into a wonderful read time .I was reading a lot of love stories lately so this book came to be a good break and I really enjoyed my days reading it.The chapters are not very long and the story does not drag so it's interesting and fast moving. It's a small novel so if you are fast reader you can easily complete it within 2 - 3 days . I am very impatient on finishing books as I do not get much time for reading story books It was quite good to have read this book within few days. I would recommend everyone to read it and I should definitely encourage the author to write more books in future and would love to read more from him.Best of Luck !!
There is a world under the water…a world which is full of live. ‘Merjella’ is a fantasy fictional novel about the live under the water. When I first heard about the book I was much more fascinated by seeing the cover page. It shows a beautiful girl having black hair and the body of octopus. The book starts with Jella, an octopus and her two friends Qwerty and Bingo. Jella’s mentor Mimico wants to fight the evil Chiro who killed Jella’s father Tarjo and took over the Zypher. Zypher is a society built to accommodate all kinds of beings and facilitate harmony and prosperity. Being a powerful jellopus, Jella is the rightful ruler of Zypher. The story shows how the protagonist Jella plots to win back the Zypher. Once Jella tries to save a lady, Marina from dying, a mysterious event happens and she becomes Merjella. Scientist Marina uses her knowledge and helps the creature there to defeat Chiro and win back Zypher. This involves a lot of planning and struggle. At last they win back their kingdom and also bring peace to land. Overall the book formed an interesting story and I learned a lot about the creatures under the water. Some of the line I found interesting in the book…well octopuses have three hearts…just for fact here…now the line ”The mechanical heart that pumps blood has stopped. The emotional heart that beats out of love has stopped. But there is a third heart that carries the hopes of a million lives and it refuses to stop.” One more-“It takes pride to create, not to destroy.” I liked the way the Preface is written. The author’s long years’ effort can be seen easily even by the perfect name he chose for even a small creature. The storyline is perfect and the author should be appreciated for all his hard effort.

Jella finds Marina stabbed and left to die in her sea. In a magical intervention, together they discover each other’s life experiences - but will they be able to reclaim their destiny?
These days real life-fiction has taken over the world to such an extent that kids book are far more practical, the concept of magic and imagination is loosing its attraction. Merjella, is the type of book little children need while growing up, they need to imagine a an imaginative world of their own and not start living a practical life as babies. The author has also shared Fun-Facts about various underwater characters for an intellectual growth of mind. I thank the author for writing such a wonderful book. The book teaches us that villains are often seen to be equipped with, treachery and fall-means. But at the end nothing works. The message is nice and the entire book surely touches its finish line, neatly
I received it by GoodReads GiveAway. It was a great first ever experience for me to win a giveaway. I was so amazed to talk to the author directly on few email exchanges. It already gave me good vibes to have expectations from the book. Easy read. A very light read. For everyone. A very good attempt on making a story wirh twist and turns on the underwater animal kingdom. Loved those notes too describing the animals and characters. I would love to actually see it converted into a graphic novel someday. Also, I plan to pass ot on to my school going niece. This would really help them too on to developing the imagination and start asking questions different from our daily human lives. I enjoyed it. Wish the author all the best! And thank you.
The struggle for power, those moments of joys, the bond of friendship and the hatred in a bout happens not just above water but also under the water. Merjella is a fantasy fiction novel which brings to light the life under water and how the protagonist Jella plots to win back her rightful kingdom at sea, Zypher. She has her trusted friends to help and support her and her task is to free her people who were taken prisoners many years ago.
While a lot of planning and tussle is happening under the water, the world above is also not untouched. A scientist is using his knowledge for wrong reasons and this is also impacting the world under water. Jella has to bring both the worlds to peace and Marina helps her understand the intricacies of the outer world.
Positives: While so many other authors are writing about the usual topics, I was glad to see the author attempt a fantasy fiction. It is not easy to build a world under water, let the reader imagine the colors, the colonies and the creatures. Yuvaraja has done a great job building the plot and crafting a story that took me to my childhood days when fantasy fiction used to be my favorite genre.
I liked the way the Preface is written. The author honestly shares that the book has been years’ long effort. He invites readers to write short stories based on the characters and is willing to publish them in future. It closes on the note “Let’s think beyond what is thinkable” and true to this the book lives up to what was promised.
What intrigued me the most was that while you will read the book, the lives of creatures underwater have been shown same as the humans on land – the talks of artificial fins, organ donation, alternative source of energy, state honors for the dead who served the kingdom and many similar words/phrases was not something I had thought would be covered when I started reading the book.
The author has used quotes as dialogues which are inspiring and are well placed. “It takes pride to create, not to destroy” , “No victory is achieved without proper groundwork” were a few of such quotes used in the book.
The book is well written and not as scientifically inclined as you may think.
***** Good reads Giveaway Winner **** Author signed copy for a honest review about the book.
First things first, this is one novel idea to form as a book. The author has put in lot of thought into this book creating metaphorical and allegorical references between the current world problems picturing it in a sea world life of fishes , octopuses and also there comes a few humans who play a major part in the story line.
1) Giving it a 3 stars was difficult- Wanted to give 4 but for few exceptions it went down a notch. User reading experience is very important when books are published, if it is bought or given otherwise. Some of the pages had blurred sentences (I saw almost-7 to 8 pages overall) had this kind of effect. Reading was very difficult. Yuvaraja can look into this in his future books and correct it. 2) I also noticed the story going way ward in few places and the ending was quite abrupt. ***** Spolier Alert**** How Deimos was alive was not explained . What happened to Qwerty and Bingo later at the end. Did Merjella go back to the sea. All this could have had a neat tight ending. Some of the parts where Marina resurfaces with Merjella - how the transformation got adjusted to the real life world is also not explained.
Now coming to the good parts:
1) Almost all of the characters are neatly etched and well thought of. Even the small boxes at the end of the chapters helps the readers why those characters have come into the story. An uniquely written boxes have made this a delightful read. 2) Several of the metaphorical references like the world domination, slaverly, racism, financial deterioration are well referenced in the story and brought alive. 3) Peace is the only existent virtue to nurture in these chaotic times for the human kind is told in relatively simple way between wars in the sea world. 4) The wordings are in lucid English which is encouraged for all age groups to read .This is one such book where any one can pick up and enjoy. 5) It also tells the pros and cons of the scientific advancements in today's world again referencing the metaphorical Ryan's world .
Overall review- Good one time read for a fun filled weekend and also some food for thought in our daily lives. Reading experience could have been better. Way to go Yuvaraja- Want to read more from your workshop!!! All the very best in your endeavors
This book is a juvenile fiction, something like Finding Nemo where there is a fish named Jella whose past was safe in hands of her guardian Mimico until she comes to know about it when she is ready to fight back for her family who was killed by a powerful enemy who owns their kingdom now under water. She has two friends named Bingo and Qwerty who would go to the middle of the Earth for her despite their limitation of strength as a fish.
It brought back the memory of my childhood weekends with my eyes glued to the television watching cartoons caring about nothing else in the world.
I enjoyed this book so much. The characters were so witty, humourous, thoughtful and complex which made them great. I only had the problem in the middle of the book where Jella and her friends build a city for them and the colony of fishes, and implemented all the technologies and currencies into the system. That could have been handled differently. Like, the underwater world lost its uniqueness a bit and the story got stretched unnecessarily.
But I really loved the concept of Kingdom, rulers and army stuffs a lot. They were enjoyable. Overall, it was a super fun read with simple language and writing. I need a movie based on this now.
Merjella by Yuvaraja Dhayanithi is a book which is full of aquatic adventure. 🐙 In this book, Zypher is an empire created by Tarjo to ensure harmony among all fishes of different communities. It is technologically advanced but it is deceitfully taken over by Chiro. 🐙 Jella, the chosen one is now on a mission to save Zypher from the treacherous Chiro. She has magical powers and is blessed with supernatural abilities. 🐙 On the other hand, Marina is a renowned scientist who is stabbed and thrown into the sea by ruthless people. 🐙 Because of a strange miracle, Jella and Marina fuse into each other and become one. They are now on a mission to discover the reason behind Marina's attack and they also work together to save Zypher. 🐙 I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. The author has included interesting facts after every chapter which are fun and informative. The vocabulary is very simple and is beginner friendly. 🐙 This book is a mix of fantasy and sea adventure. It is a fun and light read which could be finished in a single sitting. It is perfect for the young readers and also if you're in for an entertaining read. 🐙 My rating: 4/5
A story about two- Marina , the scientist who leads a beautiful life and Jella , the octopus who lives with her fellow beings underwater. When both their lives emerge into one, they fought against their enemies together.
An Sci-fi tale about a super mermaid, actually not a mermaid, but it's a jellopus. Interesting fact ; Jellopus is one among the sps. of octopuses, which can transform into any other form, shape and into another dimension, it can go invisible and can make others vanish and also can be immortal forever. It was another yet unique story with an interesting title. I loved the interesting facts at the end of each chapter and I got more interested towards octopuses and jellyfishes.

I enjoyed reading this beauty. The journey of Merjella was one of a kind. I also loved the interesting facts given at the end of each chapter. This book is a fun and light read, apt for children.
The author has also put a lot of thought into naming his characters and the names are adorable and unique. He has brought up several social issues through this book as well which deserves appreciation.
It's a treat for young readers. Highly Recommended.

As a Child i was very much fascinated about watching Little Mermaid Animation series and it was the Magic of Disney that keeps the Child in you thoroughly entertained and makes you remember it for very long time. I expected the same even from "Merjella" and it also did quite live up to the expectations. The Story starts in Zhypher, a little Kingdom under the Sea and an Orphan Octopus, "Jella" and her Guardian Mimico and her friends Qwerty and Bingo, revelation of story behind Jella being the Rightful ruler of Zhypher, which is presently ruled by Evil "Chiro" . But, things all of a sudden change with Jella and some thing magical/mystical happening to her and her becoming "Merjella" and her plans and ventures thereon, in and out of Water, and her new friends on land and another story that gets associated with her and mysteries of that story and how things finally unfold for her so that she can take back control of Zhypher. However, the story does not end there, and things have got another twist and now has a world saving objective for Merjella and how she succeeds in it. To comment on the story, the story started off like a normal fantasy bed time story for young kids and at times seems too dull and we end up feeling the things happening around are for no reason and illogical. But things started getting better from the middle of the book and by the time you are at the end of the book, you will feel a lot better for that the story gets interesting and concludes well. Too many magical powers can make you feel like why every thing cannot be done with Magic. Though it seems good as a fantasy, but takes the Thrill and fun out of Magic. The Author must be appreciated for choosing a Different Plot and the Author appears to be capable of giving a better Thrillers than fantasy. An Overall Good read and you can even share with your kids who would like the Story. Would rate a 3.5/5.
** I received a 'Signed-copy' of 'Merjella' in exchange for an honest review** Merjella is a beautiful book as much as I love the title of this book, the concept behind using the name intrigued me. The major characters of this book are Jella (a magical octopus) and Marina (an eminent scientist). The innocent octopus, Jella unaware of her powers saves Marina and turns into Merjella, the Jellopus (Half human- half octopus). Her quest of saving the fish kingdom as Jella turns into saving the entire human race as Merjella.
Merjella is a powerful octopus with magical capabilities. She can change her forms as well as of others. She is strong and confident with her strategic mind, kind-hearted as well as ruthless when it comes to saving the world. Other characters in this book i.e, Qwerty, Bingo, Ryan, Sandy even Deimos played very eminent roles.
Yuvaraja is a very imaginative writer. This book talks about octopuses with supernatural powers, an entire living human-like ecosystem underwater, birds & animals controlled by human-beings, magical powers to resolve the war of the two worlds... fascinating.
Merjella makes a great children’s book. I loved the whole concept behind the book, interweaving the human and marine world the author has made a great effort in bringing out and presenting a beautifully created imaginative world. The author has done a great deal of research related to marine life and has created a unique storyline based on it. The author’s writing style is very crisp & clean and also very easy to understand.
The story of Jella and Marina are two very different ones which captivates our interest. Jella’s story makes us imagine an Ariel-like or a Nemo-like colorful underwater world easily where Jella needs to win her kingdom back while Marina’s story makes us what the future technology may lead us to if placed in wrong hands. I especially liked the author’s idea input in Marina’s innovations of Pro-dog & Bird mails and how they were wrongly used.
The story builds up beautifully in the start but as the story goes by I felt the book was a bit rushed up in the end. I would have loved it more if the author could have tried integrating more feelings between the lines.
I believe the book would make a brilliant story for the young minds and also give them something important to about. The author’s creativity in penning down a moral & engrossing story for the children is immense. The storyline runs along friendship, empathy, strategy, planning & the prevailing of the good.
It’s a thumps up for all the children out there and it’s definitely a lovely read for all other age groups as it would take you back to your imaginative childhood days.
I rate it a 4 stars out of 5 stars in the fantasy/fiction category for children.
Life on earth can be traced back to a history of interaction between living beings and the environment. It is only in the last five hundred years or so a species named Homo sapiens has made a lasting and sever change to the way mother earth interacts with her offspring. The industrial revolution and the last two world wars have made a fast changing in the environment pattern of the world. The unexpected surge of technical and scientific thoughts and products has not only made a lasting change to the behavioural pattern of the modern generation but also threatens our very existence. In this backdrop it is amazing to think that our young generation is still gets allured by the soft petals of the blooming flowers after a fresh shower, chirping of the birds in silent afternoon, scintillating lights from a fluorescent butterfly. No story can attract the toddlers and the youngsters more than the story of thrilling world of the animals. In this process adults often get puzzled to answer all the quarries that a green mind has in store. And when the animal world is the world under water? They get more fascinated. Merjella by Yuvaraja Dhayanthi tells the young mind the story of this nonhuman world- an amazing story where they plan a strategy, can make a plan to take revenge , can break trusts just like their human counterpart. In this story two parallel stories run side by side –one under water of the non human world and one above water of the human world. as the story progresses we will discover that a point there remain no distinction between a non human mind and a human mind –their psychology, thinking, emotions ,joy, pain all overlap in a symphony.

Have you ever imagined that there can be an underwater world, ruled by Jellyfish, Octopus or the creature called 'Jellopus'? An army of fishes would be used in their defence. Several varieties of fishes would be trained for military purposes, few would be used for construction & livelihood. . Yuvaraja Dhayanithi, the author of Merjella, convinces you to shape your imagination differently. The book is a beautiful creation. The cover is very unique and I like the thoughtful representation of quilling. . The story is about an underwater kingdom, where the king is assassinated and his throne usurped. Meanwhile, the princess and her mentor manage to escape. Together, they hatch a plan to win back and free the innocents from his father's murderer. Along the way, the princess meets a dying scientists and saves her. In a magical intervention, they discover each other's life experiences. Will they be able to reclaim their destiny? . Accepting the fact that the author has done a tremendous groundwork in scientific facts, the book is more enjoyable to any biologist. And being a Biotechnology student I loved the plot and could understahe facts easily. It was Dhayanithi's debut novel. I would like to read more of his creation in future. The writing style was simple and the attachment of scientific facts after every chapter seeks an extra star in the review. . I'll recommend anyone above 13years of age to read this book.
Was I lost in the book? Undoubtedly I was. Fantasy is not my genre of interest. But if fantasy is so interesting, it may become my favourite genre in future. The author is very innovative in his story that makes the reader complete the novel at a go. The concept of the story is amazing and I really liked the thought process and imagination about the octopuses with supernatural powers. Truly unthinkable one !!!! The cover page in itself speaks a lot. The cover page is bit childish but it can fit into any kind of age groups as it has so much to deliver regarding the underwater ecosystem organ donation etc. The flavour of fantasy of underwater has been well described. The preface is highly inspiring and the adage “Let’s think beyond what is thinkable” must have appealed to many readers. The various quotes used in the book is highly motivational. Some of them are- . “It takes pride to create, not to destroy” , “No victory is achieved without proper groundwork” "If there is no God,the prayers are useless If there is a God ,the prayers are senseless". The suspense and the justice done to the perfect piece makes it a true blockbuster. Its like an animated movie which you can very well imagine with eyes open. Hats off to the author. It was an educational, motivational and amazing read. I have recommended it to many friends even. Thank you author. Looking forward to read many more ventures in future too.
**I received a signed copy this book through a Goodreads Giveaway.**
This book is a wonderful adventure. It is creative and imaginative. Simple, yet so very unique and interesting. I loved the fact that apart from it being a great fantasy read, the book was full of fascinating facts and important life lessons that one wants a children's book to entail. I hadn't expected it to be this great after seeing how short it was. Oh, how wrong I was.
All the characters were incredibly placed. The plot was well thought-out and easy to follow. The author did a very good job at painting the picture of the underwater world. I found myself completely immersed in this world and cheering on such wonderful characters. And I liked how it ended at the right moment, as well. It wasn't dragged out just to fill more pages.
I know I would have simply adored this book if I had read it as a child, considering how much liked this book as adult. A solid 4/5 stars.
i really enjoyed this book it will make a great book for children aged 10-12 especially as that is the age of chapter books and i wold encourage any teacher to review this book for her class room the story is about fish and who one octopus was special and would do great things in the future then a human is almost dead in the sea the jella finds her and at a point the human enters into jella they go to land to try to find out who tried to kill her yet the fish have their on little war going on..there is politics, friendship. learning to trust people adn fish and dishonest people and fish.. going on in the story it comes down to who do you believe and what are your goals where family plays a role and when family does not play a role ..personally i see this alot in a cartoon setting and i think that the messages about certain fish ect was interesting in the chapters very well written and it was enough to keep your interest in the story
I got a review copy of book in exchange of honest review, The book has a uniqueness which hooks the reader to it passionately. In the beginning of the book when the world of Zyphers and Mimico is introduced, I was very much intrigued to the new concept adopted by the author, the way the underwater community saw a fish capture hook as an invitation to god and how they made their own assumption of why someone was rejected from the 'funnel of God' is quite an interesting perspective. Throughout the book I was amazed at how the perspective and thought process is different and depends on the status and position of the person (in the book- fish) The book is a good read for all ages. I am giving it 4.5 stars, and I appreciate the work of Mr. Dhayanithi for writing such an awesome book as a debut. Peace!
*Won an author signed copy of this book in a goodreads giveaway* Merjella is a story of a protagonist who is a 'magical combination' of two prtagonists- Jella, the octopus & Marina, a talented scientist in an imaginary world. The book is almost like an animated movie. At a glance it may seem to be meant for kids, but the book throws plenty of heavyweight messages here and there. There are quite a few interesting quotes throughout the book,like- 1)"If there is no god,the prayers are useless, and if there is god, they become senseless." 2)“Expressing anger is an art. The more grace you apply to it, the more effective it shall be.” etc. In some places, merjella's magical skills were almost like that of God -pushing back time and all which felt like taking a bit too much privilege and liberty of imagination.Apart from that it is a nice, short and very unique kind of one time read.
This will be received well by people of all ages though I can say safely that kids would love it the most.
I have a feeling in my mind that this book will be made into a movie one day and I would love to be invited to the pre-screening. I could recollect my memories of watching movies like Abyss and Finding Nemo when I started reading it though this book is no where related to it.
This is a complete fantasy novel and I forced myself to finish reading it in a single day as it was really compelling for me to finish reading it. A Perfect Fantasy Novel is all I would say.
I received this book for FREE through Goodreads Giveaway!!!
Do buy this book. Read it. You would surely be able to convince the kids at home for a week(if you narrate the story slowly) for sure :-)
Thank you very much, Yuvaraj Dhanithi for this free giveaway.
Book was magnificently written. Fantasy isn't my type of genre but I simply loved the story. It is a hybrid hero story of an octopus cum human supernatural creature Merjella.
It was very different and innovative, gave octopus amazing facts after a few chapters, had suspense, comedy, description of characters at appropriate places.
In short, beautifully written!
I also received it in a real nice packing with 2 bookmarks, a card of Yuvaraj, 2 calendars and another descriptive character card with a paper bag of Merjella. Loved that thing too! :)
