The sixth fabelous book in Suzanne Selfors' Ever After High: A School Story series.

Meeshell is not an ordinary mermaid princess; she knows that someday, when she is older, she will leave her sea kingdom and live happily ever after on land with her prince. The thought of living on land is thrilling but also nerve-racking. Meeshell is glad she has years to prepare! But there is a change in the tides, and now Meeshell will start attending Ever After High. She has almost no time to do all of her preparing and planning. Can Meeshell fit in at Ever After High, or will she stand out like a fish out of water?

Just as Meeshell’s tail dried and her legs reappeared, a nearby mirror lit up. Blondie Lockes’s face appeared. “Listen up, my fellow fairytales, have I got a very hexciting scoop for you. It turns out that our newest student, Meeshell, is actually a mermaid!”

 photo a2ad52bd-16f2-424f-b19e-ed5c150e1679_zpsghf7kmxr.gif

If only Blondie announced that in the third chapter, when Meeshell came to EAH, instead of towards the end of the book in chapter 19. Meeshell would have felt much happier not lying from the start.

Then again, there wouldn't be any plot if that had happened! This whole book was literally about Meeshell hiding her identity as a mermaid, so that she could fit in as a human being.

The idea of a mermaid attending Ever After High sounded fantastic and intriguing, but this book was a disappointment. I was hoping to learn more about the underwater world in the EAH universe, but aside from the first few chapters, it's barely mentioned.

Instead? This book was the novel version of the episode 'Meeshell comes out of her shell' on youtube! So the author couldn't be bothered writing a different book.

Why did the whole book basically feel like a subplot? This didn't feel the real story for some reason. I was bored many times, and even contemplated not finishing it - but since it was so short, I got through it.

The decline of decent storylines in he EAH series truly saddens me. I haven't enjoyed an Ever After High book properly since A Semi Charming Kind of Life - and that was purely because Darling Charming was the centre of that story.

I feel like EAH is slowly becoming a caricature of itself. Raven, Apple, Briar, they're in the book - they're present, but it's like theyre only there to fulfill their stereotypes. The whole reason I got into EAH was because of them, and Cedar and Cerise. It saddens me that they're most likely not going to get their own stories anymore.

All these newer characters are taking their place... I can't give this a 5 star out of biasedness anymore, because it doesn't feel like an EAH book. So, three stars is it.

On a positive note, I liked Meeshell, and Humphrey. They go well together.

But wait a minute. Didn't Humphrey have a crush on Jillian Beanstalk?
 photo eb70985b-353e-4e3d-8555-762fccd920eb_zps5gwq09to.png

As usual now, EAH crushes in the show and in the books, can be different. Another thing I don't like.

I think this is my favourite of the ever after high books. It’s got a great message of self acceptance and letting your true self shine through.
Yes we all have to be prepared for the future but we can only be who we are right her and now in the moment.
This was a fun quick read and it breaks my heart that they seem to have stopped this series. I hope that they one day bring it back as this is so much better then the Disney equivalent.

This installment of the Ever After High series seemed like it was phoned in from a MirrorPhone without much inspiration. I liked the introduction of the new character MeeShell the Mermaid, but some of the supporting characters fell flat. The magic may have been bubbling in the cauldron because it was definitely missing from this book. Someone call Blondie Lockes because Fairy Tale Ending was the equivalent of some rotten porridge left in Baba Yaga's cottage.

Fairy Tale Ending focuses on the new transfer student MeeShell who comes from under the sea to begin her matriculation at Ever After High. She seemed like a static character whose story was plotted with a diagram tree without any personality. Her interactions with others seemed blase and she lied about being a mermaid until the last two chapters. It is a school filled with fairy tale characters, you're not the only weirdo there. Get that seaweed out of your ears and use your noggin! At least she seemed nice, even if she was one-dimensional.

I truly wished that they had let the daughter of the Sea Witch join MeeShell on her sojourn to her new school. She was the one who cast the spell and seemed really nice. It would have added a nice layer to the story and added some conflict as well. It is always cool when the heroes and villains of the same story meet each other. I would have been personally more interested in Mini-Ursula's perspective than the Little Mermaid if I am being honest. We need more tallies for the Rebels than the Royals here.

The blandness and human tofu of Apple White strikes again. She is so boring and written without any flaws that it becomes irritating. She is MeeShell's tour guide to Ever After High and shows her all the extra curricular activities the school has to offer. She droned on and I was happier to see the brief cameo of Raven Queen than the entirety of Apple White's secondary appearances. Rebels > Royals, duh

I don't know if there will be any more installments from Suzanne Selfors but I do have the Monster High/ Ever After High crossover on my shelf courtesy of my fellow reviewer Amanda. I'm curious to see these two franchises interact despite the less than stellar reviews. And I do accept my nomination as Thronecoming Queen due to my "read to filth" book reviews and crazy curly hair both as my avatar and real life counterpart.

I hope that the title of this book doesn't mean that Suzanne Selfors won't be writing any more EAH novels, because she's consistently done a great job making the stories distinct from the webisodes while making the characters recognizable and relateable. Meeshell as the shy, literal fish out of water new girl is familiar to anyone who has had to start a new school, as is Apple's overbearing need to make her fit in. While the "just be yourself" message is a bit heavy handed (even for middle grade), the story is fun and sweet, and the romance the best since Ginger and Hopper.

Fairy Tale Ending: Ever After High (Updated)
Meeshell arrives at Ever After High. She’s still getting used to her new legs and is glad the captain thinks its from being on the ship. She’s greeted by Headmaster Grimm and welcomed to EAH and tells her he hopes her trip was uneventful (and then clarifies as in storms). He offers to take her bags. Captain Greenbeard tells her she travels light and is very quiet.

Leaving the ship, Meshell gets a splinter (sliver) and the Headmaster immediately summons a nurse fairy. He questions why she doesn’t have shoes, but there was no time to get them as the decession was so abrupt for her to go to school. It doesn’t take long for the nurse fairy to remove the splinter. Meeshell questions if he thinks there’s something wrong with her legs but he says (in a firm tone) the Sea Witch would have no reason to give her messed up legs. She wants her to succeed as much as everyone else. (There also seems to be something wrong with her voice. It’s barely audible). And there is something that Meeshell has that the Sea Witch wants.

We find out that Meesheel received an invitation from Grimm to attend EAH. The tale as we know goes the Sea Witch made a deal with (in this version it’s not Ariel. It’s Peal) that in exchange for legs and the chance to live on land, she’d give the Sea Witch her beautiful voice. Peal found true love and he agreed to live with her under the sea. This broke the witch’s curse. Now she has to wait for Meeshell to live out her mother’s story so she can get her voice to add to her collection.

Meeshell is confused. Her story isn’t supposed to start just yet. But Headmaster Grimm says it will give her the experience she’ll need to live as a land dweller. The message in the bottle states also that the Sea Witch will be helping with the transformation (giving her legs). They tell her Finbert (her pet) can even join her after she gets settled in. The Sea Witch shows up and lets it be known that she’s only interested in getting Meesheel’s voice and she wants her daughter Coral to do the spell to give Meesheel her legs (and this is even worse because Coral isn’t good at spells).

Headmaster asks if she still wants to keep her identity kept secret and she says yes. She wants to be treated as a human like everyone else. When she gets there, she’s told all the students are in the Charmatorium getting ready for a assembly to support the athletic team, Meesheel is introduced to Baba Yaga and told she’ll be her advisor. She was her dad’s advisor too. She tells he her leg and voice problems are the effects of being out of water. The Headmaster says he thinks its best if they give her a single room, but she says she doesn’t want to be treated differently. So, she’s given the roommate Farrah Goodfairy.

Meesheel says it doesn’t matter to her. He says he thinks Farrah will be a good match. She’s intelligent and friendly. He then says the Welcoming Committee will show her around. Then Apple shows up in the place of Briar and introduces herself. Apple takes her to the Bookstore and introduces her to the Mirror Pad. Apple asks what her interest are. Even tho she likes riding manta rays. In fact, she was a champion, having won first place in her age group in the manta ray race. She also loved combing the seafloor for treasures. While the Sea Witch collected voices, Meeshell collected shells of all shapes and sizes. And she was really good at sea languages, having mastered Porpoise and Dolphin. Still, she tells Apple she doesn’t know. Apple offers to go get her some lozenges.

Apple shows her the Castleteria, picks out her lunch, and then introduces her to Ashlynn, Briar, and Mattie (who she’s never heard of). Aslynn measures her feet to order he some shoes. Mattie shows her a new trick for the talent show (pulling cups out of her hat). She spills some tea which startles Meeshell. She tells the others she’s afraid of water. Which isn’t exactly a total lie because of the spell put on her by Coral.

Three days ago, Meeshell and her parents meet with Coral and the Sea Witch. They find out Coral’s only done the spell on an eel and its legs fell off. Coral tells Meeshell her mom and dad are making her do this. After its done, Coral tells he “one littler thing” She can’t get the legs wet or they’ll turn back into fins but once they’re dry, they’ll turn back to legs. Then Daring comes in and he heart skips a beat. He hands her a picture of himself and she decides he’s too arrogant and she doesn’t want a prince like that.

She’s also introduced to Humphrey and told he’ll be thee to help her if she has any tech problems. He rushes off to a tech club meeting and falls. He quickly gets himself up, checks himself, declares himself fine, and makes his exit. When she gets her room, she meets her roommate. Her shoes from Ashlynn are already there. She finds out her roommate is to be a future fairy godmother and conjures her up a jacket. But she warns her the jacket will disappear at midnight.

The girls give her a Snap Dragon flower. The vase spills some water and she jumps away but it spills on the floor. Meeshell worries that the dragon will come out and splash the water around and she’ll turn in front of her roommates. Mattie receives someone called Story Teller 2. She uses the code name “Sea Shell”. Story Teller 2 says they’re there if she has any questions and tells her they know what its like to be the new kid. Then she receives a package full of clothes from Fashionably Ever After from her mom.

Apple returns with the lozenges and tells her tomorrow is Club Day and she can pick however many to join she wants. Meeshell finds out from Coral her mom is tired of being the sea witch and wants her voice so she can become a famous singer. Coral can’t sing at all and Meeshell wonders if she’ll give her voice to Coral. Coral says it’s not her thing. Then asks what she’ll do if her mom leaves and she becomes the sea witch. Meeshell says she doesn’t know but they have time to figure it out.

Story Teller 2 and Meeshell exchange messages about Club Day. She asks will ST2 be there and they say maybe. She asks if she can meet them and they abruptly end the conversation. At least today, her voice is better. At Club Day she meets Hopper and then again sees Humphrey (who again trips up and drops all his Mirror Pads). Ashyln is in the Forest Club. Matter is in the Wonderland Club and Apple is in the Library Club. There’s also a tech club but none seem right to Meeshell.

Blondie gives Meeshell a special announcement and then the Happily Glee’s sing. They aren’t very good. One of the singers was clearly off-key, while another singer was way too loud. The harmony wasn’t working, and the choreography, well, it was just a mess. Apple tells Melody Meeshell’s looking for a club but when she asks does she sing Meeshell says she can’t. Even tho this is the club she really wants to join. She knows if she does her famous voice will stand out.

Ashlyn says tomorrow is Sports Day. Maybe she can join the cheer hexing squad with her. Baba Yaga advises her that she needs to let her true self out. She takes this to mean she should let her fins out so she takes a shower. It doesn’t make her feel better. She decides she needs to swim and finds a private location nearby called the Enchanted Lake. ST2 messages her and asks if she found a club and she says no. She couldn’t find one right for her. They say they couldn’t either so they started their own. When she asks what the club is they abruptly leave the chat room again.

On her swim, she runs into Humphrey. As she hides in the shadows, she hears him telling himself he can do this. He goes in and doesn’t come up. Meeshell dives in and pulls him to the surface (saving his life). He says he thought he was alone. Meeshell says maybe he should take some swim lessons but he gets defensive and says he got a cramp. Meeshell wants to tell him it’s no big deal and she knows how it feels but she’s too shy. The bell chimes and they return to the school.
She realizes she saved him just like her mother saved her prince. So does this mean Humphey is her prince? It can’t be. They’re both too shy. Could too such people really be together?

Meeshell tries out for cheerleading (hexleading?). Faybelle is mean to her just like on the first day when she disses her dress. She cuts her after her front roll goes sideways. She tries out for track but that goes awry too. There doesn’t seem to be any sport that she can do and she can’t admit she’d be the best at the Swim Team. At the end of the day, she hasn’t joined anything. She talks to ST2 later and he tells her don’t feel bad. He’s a bit of a klutz too. He’s always falling. She’s a bit slow on the uptake and ask him to tell her one thing about himself and he says he’s a prince. She wonders if he’s hers.

The next day they all decide to go to Mirror Beach. Ashlyn catches Meeshell sending a message home to one of the gulls but thankfully, although she speaks many animal languages she doesn’t understand gull. Some of the other guys are in the Surf Club. She meets Hunter and he, Daring, and Humphrey are in it. Meeshell notices Humphrey doesn’t have his floatation devices but when she asks him he laughs it off like he doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

The guys want waves so Meeshell uses her magic touch. But then the waves get out of control and when she looks she doesn’t see Humphrey. When she finds him he’s been knocked out by the wave. She apologizes but Hunter compliments her on gtting to him first and asks if she wants to join the lifeguard club. Ashlyn says she can’t. She’s scared of the water and Hunter says that’s too bad.

*If she spoke up and told everyone she was a mermaid, and explained that she wasn’t really afraid of water, her new friends would see that she was brave and fun-loving, just like they were. All of the things that must have seemed so odd about her, that they had been so kind and accepting of, would suddenly make sense. Sure, she was a little shy, but she wasn’t yet used to life on land.

But admitting she was a mermaid would mean being treated differently. Later she tries to find out who ST2 is again but again they end the chat. Apple stops by and says she’s been pressuring her to hard to join something and apologizes saying from now on she’s just gonna let her do her. Baba Yaga calls Meeshell and tells her she needs her assistance with something. Meeshell is shown Baba’s Yaga’s beast care class and helps Baby Yaga get an injured Octopus to come out of hiding. Baba Yaga tells her to stop trying to pretend to be what she’s not if she wants to fit in. This gives her a lot to think about.

She tells her the only real experience is the one where you are your real self. She goes for a swim and then starts to sing. That’s when she notices Apple, Ashlyn, and Briar and they realize she’s a mermaid. They laugh and Meeshell apologizes and explains. Apple says she had to learn not to try to live for her future life (or try to force Raven to be someone she wasn’t). They have to be their true selves righ now. They tell Meeshell she should join the glee club, the swim club, and the life guard club but only if that’s what she wants.

Meeshell realizes that In the end it didn’t matter what anyone thought of her, it only mattered what she thought of herself. She had to be her true self to be happy. Then Blondie reports that there newest student is a mermaid. Meeshell joins the glee club and they perform at a talent event. Apple gets invited to join the Welcome Committee. They all plan to go to Mirror Beach the next day. Humphrey tho is avoiding Meeshell and she hasn’t heard from ST2. Baba Yaga request Meeshell’s help with another injured creature.

Coral brings in a manta ray and she and Meeshell both say they want to help animals. So, they’ll be working together. Meeshell sees Humphrey drowning again and comes to his rescue. He confesses that he always knew she was a mermaid and figured he needed to learn how to swim so she’d like him. She tells him he doesn’t have to. He also confesses that he’s ST2. He asks her to go to a movie and she accepts. Oh and Coral finds a spell that lets Finbert join her in a bubble at EAH.

My Thoughts

It's funny how the webisode wrapped up 20 Chapters in 3 minutes. When I read this right off I didn't really get why she wanted to hide who she really was. Well ok I guess this isn't Monster High where there are all kinds of different hybrids. Which makes me wonder if the story would have went a different way if she would have been accepted there. Do the students ever cross over? Maybe she and Sirena Von Boo could be besties. Just a thought.

But then hopefully Coral will come to EAH as well. I know this was the Little Mermaid story but what I didn't know was that they were gonna throw in names that weren't Ariel and Eric. I was thinking who are Pearl and Phillip? But then I guess there would be conflict with Disney over the names and also that Ariel had a daughter (Melody). And as I know Mattel and Disney don't have ties. So Pearl and Phillip and Fillbert it is.

As a character herself I didn't really feel one way or the other about Meeshell. I can say that in looks she's very pretty (from the webisode). But in personality I think making her "shy" worked against her and made her come off as lack luster in the story. I think that her good traits are she's clearly talented and has a voice to rival most pop singers today. And she's great with water related activies (swimming life guard). My favorite of all is that she's self-less as we see when she saves Humphrey and the comes to the Octopus's rescue.

And there really should have been a "Science Club" or a "Biology Club" which is where I thought the story was gonna go. Just seemed like a waste there wasn't one. Ashlyn also could have been a member. But those things aside her character was just a little bit bland. Just another character thrown into the mix.

And speaking of Ashlyn since WHEN is she a cheerhexer? Yes I can see this for Apple. And as for Apple I warmed to her a little more in this story. I'm usually not the biggest Apple fan, but she's showing definite growth as this series progresses. She not only realizes that her motives are selfish she apologizes and accepts Meeshell as possibly not being a joiner. How far we've come from the first season.

Apple stood out character-wise in development more than the main character. Did I like Humphry and Meeshell together as a couple? I think in personality they're a good match for each other and I like that they can tell us other anything which to me equals a great basis for friendship and a relationship. And also speaking of since when, since WHEN is Humpty Dumpy a royal, making Humphrey a prince. But then I'm thinking there was a crown on his head in the story books I had. Funny that. I take it not only is there a Kingdom Underwater, there's one where Eggs have their own monarchy.

RATING: 5 Not my favorite of all the EAH books. This one was lackluster.

This book wasn't as good as the last one but I still really enjoyed it. It was a good book, and I loved reading about Meeshell who hadn't really been in the other books. I did have some problems with it though. For one, the ending wasn't written very well. The book was going really well then suddenly everything happened at once and it just ended. The ending could have been done a lot better and been a lot more interesting. Also, it really bothered me that Meeshell had been mentioned in at least one previous book but in this book she was just starting school at Ever After High. The series had been going in order then all of the sudden this book started jumping around which didn't make a lot of sense in the series. I did still enjoy the book though and I am sad that I have finished this series. I hope the rest of the Ever After High books I have to read are as good as these have been.

My heart beats rapidly in an attempt to find the correct words to express my love for this book. It gives us yet another point of view on the school and its people, and brings us a tale of struggling to keep a secret for reasons you can't explain. And building a few lies upon it, because that's the price of keeping a secret. *SIIIIGH*

I feel like this story also introduced us to a pretty complex and understandable villain, The Sea Witch, and I loved that.

Also, uh

It was lovely to see how new students at Ever After High are welcomed at the school, because that was something I had been wondering. I could have done without the whole StoryTeller2 plot line, though, because it felt off from the very start - I had a feeling that Meeshell (LOL) had a stalker or something, in fact - and because I had immediately figured out who it was. Apple's appearances were lovely, though, as usual.

As a side story, cuter than the others in my opinion, and very different, which has been lacking. Pulling in a new character and watching them adjust to not only a new school, but entirely new way of life, was pretty fun. Overall still cute books, and if you like fairy tale stories, these are a fun addition.

It was a spelltacular book! There was magic, shyness, adventure and even love and friendship! This book is mixed up with so many nice emotions and a great story. It tells a story of a shy girl that goes to ever after high. I won't spoil it any more! It passes a message that even if you're shy, always believe in your friends, tell them the truth and don't let them think you're lying!

This would have to be my least favorite in the series, I think the author had a bit of writers block it is still very good at the worst however I found myself.skipping over pages because of in boring stuff. You can basically sum this story up as the exact same thing as the four minute video on line except for the part about glee club and Humphry dumpty.😐

The wonderland characters are by far my favorite, so I can’t say this book was my favorite, but it’s definitely one of them. I really loved the message. Finishing this book is a little bitter sweet though, knowing that these books were one of the lasts of the Ever After High Series. I wish I could get more, but even knowing I can’t, I really enjoyed getting to read these.

Fairy tale ending is my one of my favorite School story books yet. I like it because I felt feelings for Meeshell (the main character). I had to read a chapter to get into it, but after that I could barely put it down!

Hm. Maybe I need to stop reading these for a bit. I promise I'm not trying to be mean. I was going to give this 2 stars (ho-hum, but not terrible), but I just couldn't get past a few things. First off, though it was awesome for these books to feature a shy, reserved girl as the heroine for once, her reservations seemed founded on poor reasoning that felt super forced for plot reasons (rather than heartfelt), and her shyness disappeared the second her friends find out just one part of her secret. It just didn't connect or feel true to the character. (Also, the idea of keeping your true self back was addressed *WAY* better in the book that centered on Darling Charming. And, because it was very similar, but not as well done, I kept wondering why try to re-do this same idea? I don't get it.) The romantic interest also felt pretty forced and unnecessary--I liked the idea behind it, but there wasn't enough connection created during the telling to make it all that meaningful. Lastly (and the 1-Star clincher for me), was the total disregard for the actual story of the Little Mermaid. I mean, the author kinda sorta seems to imply that her parents changed the final ending of their story, but mentions nothing about the fact that in the traditional tale, the Little Mermaid sacrifices herself to save the human she loves (i.e. she dies) within a time constrained situation. So... where is this idea of Meeshell living on land for an extended period of time in her future coming from exactly...? Also, why isn't the daughter of the Sea Witch prepping to be THE Sea Witch by the time Meeshell's story comes into play? It's just weird. And, disappointing. Poor Hans Christian Andersen always seems to get the short end of the re-telling stick because Americans don't like non-"happy" endings. Boo.

This one follows the Little Mermaid. Slow to start and very repetitive but I did enjoy how it was all resolved in the end. I still recommend this one because it goes with the series and I love this series.
