Early reviews from Advanced Reader Copies of Alchemy 2:

"When is a book great? When the sequel is not only as good as but better than the first! This is now well in contention to be in my Top Ten reads of 2015. I really loved the first book but always lower expectations a bit for a sequel, I should not have worried, Chris James gave me so much more than I could have hoped for. I am literally desperate now to read book three in this great series." - Maxine - Booklover Catlady - Amazon Top Reviewer

"Chris James has done it again! And this book is even better than his first. I did not want it to end. I saved it like a treat, a reward to look forward to. I enjoyed every word. This book is a masterpiece, spanning so much history as well as telling a great story. This author rivals C.J. Sansom for history and Alexandre Dumas for pace and adventure. I loved so many things about this book, but one of my favourites is Arthur Conan Doyle making an appearance and also deducing Sherlock Holmes style. - Renita D'Silva, TopSelling Author - "A Sister's Promise"

"The author, once again, weaves real people into the wonderful fiction he is creating - I especially loved the cameo by Conan Doyle! There are parts of this book that, at first glance, seem familiar to the incidents depicted within the first book but as you read on, the author has very cleverly twisted things again - more smoke and mirrors." - Kath, Amazon Book Reviewer.

When is a book great? When the sequel is not only as good as but better than the first! This is now well in contention to be in my Top Ten reads of 2015. I really loved the first book but always lower expectations a bit for a sequel, I should not have worried, Chris James gave me so much more than I could have hoped for. I am literally desperate now to read book three in this great series and this is not even on sale yet (mid-Dec 2015).

We are taken back to the smog of Victorian London to continue the story of Jacob Silver, more to the point to find out how his body is missing from his grave at Pentonville Prison. Lizzie Weston, the one remaining lady of the portraits still alive makes it her mission to prove that he did indeed reach immortality, and ultimately to clear his name. Is he indeed immortal? You have to read it to find out.

The police are on the hunt for the enigmatic and mysterious Flamel and there is more murder, mayhem, headless women and heads in glass jars than you can handle. The plot is sublime, I was suckered in from the very start of the book and it gripped me until the very last word. And yet again Chris James delivers a stunning ending that both delighted and frustrated me at the same time, bring on the next book and quick!

I thought book two gets a little bit darker and more macabre and I absolutely loved that, the characters ping off the pages and you will be kept guessing for longer than you like about where you stand on many matters depicted in the pages of this brilliant novel. There are some simply spectacular scenes that really did pause time and matter (well maybe not the matter bit, but I was reading Alchemy after all). Entwined into the brilliant fast-paced thrilling and gruesome plot is one of my favourite aspects of Chris as an author - his witty lines that literally make me laugh out loud. You would think they would not work in a book about such dark subject matter, but it just does. This is very colourful, entertaining and delectable fiction.

There is nothing not to like and this is a book that I could rave on and on about, pure escapism and clever writing from a shining new star in the midst of millions of authors.

I was very lucky to get an ARC of this book pre-release date and cannot recommend it enough, do read the first book in the series Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder to get a solid background on the exceptional and addictive characters and storyline.

Bodies missing from graves? More murdered women without heads? Throw in the supernatural and a fair amount of potions and elixirs and what do you have? A winning combination that's what! This gets a solid 5 paw prints from me, I can't wait for the next book. Will this one get to my top spot for my best read of 2015? You will have to check in to see.

NOTE!I have advance review copies of this brilliant sequel, all you have to do is email me at booklovercatlady@gmail.com to request your copy, you can also get your hands on book one at the same time!

A definite 5 stars!

I was pleasantly surprised after reading Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold: - an historical psychological mystery thriller by Chris James. After an excellent debut novel  Alchemy: A Story of Perfect Murder I didn't think any sequel could top that, but it definitely did. This was an excellent read, well-written and a brilliant plot with interesting characters. I love historical fiction and thriller/crime/mysteries it's my most-read genre and it also had a hint of the supernatural thrown in, so this fell right into my favorite categories. Here is the synopsis:

London ~ 1915

A sensational murder trial begins at the Old Bailey, the accused having apparently been hung for similar shocking murders, in 1895.

How had Jacob Silver escaped the hangman? Where was he, these last 20 years?

Lizzie Weston, his only surviving model, was convinced he was innocent the first time. But after the evidence against him unfolds, she’s convinced he’s guilty this time.

Jacob Silver, having unravelled an ancient recipe in the old tome: Alchemy, is convinced he is immortal, and that’s how he survived the hanging. Improving his skills over the last 20 years, he now claims he can raise the dead.

The prosecution allege he murdered five more women for their souls ~ as Alchemy, the manual of murder prescribes.

But is anything as it seems?

Jacob Silver was tried as a serial killer and was sentenced to death by hanging, but now he is missing from his grave. So Lizzie Weston sets out to affirm his immortality and defend his innocence. She wonders if the elixir did its job and made her immortal as well. I just loved her character. She was so vigorous in her beliefs, strong-willed and intelligent and clearly smitten with Jacob even though her father advises her to leave well-enough alone.

Then we had the courtroom drama again, which was highly entertaining and believable, as well as the forever cackling, decapitated heads in jars. I literally was laughing out loud, this was so original! I love gory and gruesome in my thrillers, the more the better.

I think it is probably advisable to read the debut novel before embarking on this one, as it will make a lot more sense and you will be able to get a background on the characters and prior events.

Ultimately, this was a fantastic, enthralling read and I enjoyed it very much. Chris James left this on a brilliant cliffhanger and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. These books deserve a lot more attention in my opinion and are very cleverly written. I would like to thank Maxine at Booklover Catlady Publicity and VIP Reviewers for the privilege of reading this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved so many things about this book, but one of my favourites is Arthur Conan Doyle making an appearance and also deducing Sherlock Holmes style. I also love how each chapter ended on a cliffhanger so I just couldn't stop turning the pages. I adored Lizzie Weston - what a woman to have on your side! I also admired how the author introduced to us the action that had taken place in the first book so seamlessly. Best of all, I LOVED the humour in every page. Just wonderful.I wish I could give it ten stars. A book that defies pigeonholing into genres. Wonderful, entertaining, informative, fun, page turning, addictive. This is a book that does everything you want a story to do. I think Chris James is sheer genius. I cannot wait for the next installment of this FAB series.

If you enjoyed the first book, Alchemy: a story of perfect murder, then you should definitely read this second book, as I’m sure you will enjoy it too, as you are taken on a journey of further mystery and surprising discovery.

This is a very well written mystery thriller with a great plot. I loved the eerie atmosphere, and the great characters, including a few famous ones you may have heard of before. The later part of the book had me wishing I could read faster, as I was dying to find out what happened next. This story takes you to a time and place in history, and keeps you there until the last page.

Book two continues the story told in book one, as well as revealing further details of past events. It is probably possible to read this as a standalone, but I would strongly recommend you read these books in order to fully understand and enjoy them.

Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold, is imaginative, quirky and slightly bizarre at times. A great read!

Great for lovers of historical murder mystery. I think this would also really appeal to fans of gothic novels, such as Frankenstein. However, this is in no way a retelling of such a story. This is very much a unique story in its own right.

I would like to thank the author, Chris James, for kindly offering me an eBook copy of this novel, in exchange for an honest review, and wish him success with this and any future novels. I’m already looking forward to reading the next.

I read Alchemy: a story of perfect murder earlier on in the year and it was a five star read for me. When I found out that the author was writing a sequel to it I was suddenly hit with a mixed reaction. I was over the moon that there was going to be another book but I couldn't help but have that little bit of doubt in the back of my mind as to whether I could possibly enjoy it as much as the first. Well I've read it and I did!

Even though the author covers enough of the first book in this one for anyone that may not have read it, I would personally still recommend readers reading them in order as I for one certainly enjoyed it.

Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold is not only a sequel but a prequel to the first book. The reader gets to find out what happened after the first book finishes but we are also taken on a journey even further back in time to how it all started.

I loved Lizzie Weston's character, she is very strong in her beliefs and is hell bent on finding out the truth so she can clear Jacobs name. Living in the century that she does, it certainly isn't the easiest time for women but Lizzie certainly doesn't let something like that stop her. She was quite weak in her role in the first book but she has certainly strengthened in this one which made for an even more enjoyable read.

The parts of the story that are based in the court room, which for someone who isn't really a lover of court room dramas, are some of my favourite. I am just so glad that I am just reading the story as what the poor people in those court rooms have to endure is quite horrific, in more ways than one!

Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold is not only better than the first one it is darker and more disturbing if that is even possible. It is ideal for anyone who loves a good horror/crime novel that is dark and slightly disturbing.

Many thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the author's debut novel, and this one is another cracker. Chris James writes highly original dark and mysterious thrillers that are wonderfully well crafted and different to anything else I've read. No spoilers here, just a strong recommendation to buy and read this excellent novel just as soon as it's available. It's a definite 5 stars from me.

Firstly, the author does fill in the gaps from book one (in a non intrusive way I hasten to add) so, at a push, this one could be read as a standalone but, I would really, really recommend that you read the first one before starting this. There is so much more contained with it than can ever be imparted through a recap that, although this story makes sense in itself, there would be a whole layer of depth missing if you don't. Also, in my opinion, not to put too fine a point on it, it's brilliant so why wouldn't you!?
In my review for the first book, I said that it was the book that "blew me out of the water" this year. Well, if the first did that then I am at loss for the words I need to describe this sequel. To say it eclipsed the first is definitely a gross understatement.
I am not going to talk about the story - if you are looking to read this book then I am going to assume that you have already read the first one so you know what has been going on. This book continues in much the same vein. The author, once again, weaves real people into the wonderful fiction he is creating - I especially loved the cameo by Conan Doyle! There are parts of this book that, at first glance, seem familiar to the incidents depicted within the first book but as you read on, the author has very cleverly twisted things again - more smoke and mirrors.
Actually, I lied. I said if you have read the first book you will know what is going on. As with the first book, you soon get to realise that what you know isn't always the truth. Is it magic or misdirection? Can you take what you are seeing at face value or is it just another smokescreen? Oh my goodness what a wonderful ride this book took me on and I, as a reader, was powerless to do anything other than dutifully follow down every delicious twist and turn, totally transfixed.
And Lizzie, dear Lizzie; what a fantastic character she is. She's gutsy and not scared of anything, she's wily and very, very smart. I would definitely want her fighting in my corner. The rest of the cast are all just as well described and enhance the realism of the "make-believe" we are reading about. A story that is just as visually hard hitting, gruesome and genre defying as the first instalment.
In fact, the only down side of the book I can think of is that I have now finished it and, as I read this book early, I have even longer to wait for the next one. Up side of that is that the gap will be long enough for me to re-read these two before I read book three. As anyone who knows me will tell you, it is extremely rare that I re-read a book because my TBR is just far too long to be able to justify the time but I think this series will be the one that breaks this rule.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"The final essential ingredients are a catalyst, to bring this elixir to life:
The souls of a wench, a widow and a witch; a wife and a bitch."

Being one of the reviewers of Booklover Catlady Publicity, I received an ARC from the author and BCP in return for a fair and honest review. And I'm so honored and thankful to be one of the few who were able to read this in advance. It was fast-paced and a real page-turner that though I'm reading this series backwards (yep. I haven't read Alchemy: The Perfect Murder Yet.), it seems like I've know Jacob and Lizzie and all the other characters already.

But I can't really give it a full 5-star review, hence the 4 stars. As what a 4-star means in Goodreads, I "really liked it" but I couldn't really say that "it was amazing".

WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! WARNING!

The truth behind the need for 5 women souls to "activate" the elixir of life was totally not expected, and it was just downright smart, and I would like to commend Mr. James for that. But for me, its revelation was a bit premature. Revealing it as some kind of flashback during the trial or something like that, may have created a grander impact on the reader than it has.

And since I mentioned flashbacks, I also have to point out that there seems to be a lot of it in the book. Yes, they were necessary at some point but a flashback sometimes right in the middle of a chapter or maybe in the next chapter preceding a really long one is really confusing. If I wasn't engrossed enough, I wouldn't really be able to follow through.

And the "telekinetic" powers that Lizzie gained after being an immortal that was described during the time when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tested out her immortality was something so out of the blue and was never again mentioned and explained. I hope some kind of clarifications though emerge in the 3rd book (?). Well, I'm just expecting since I guess everyone would want to know if Jacob hanged for the second time or not.

I mentioned this on one of my reviews here, I hate characters especially protagonists who can't seem to put two and two together when it's right there staring at them in the face. That time when Lizzie was having doubts about Jacob's innocence and even getting disgusted for the things he did to Flamel i.e. cutting his limbs and head off made me want to turn into a Hulk! She knew that the "immortals" will still survive even though their heads were cut off, and yet it didn't occur to her - until it was too late! Ugggghhh! I was really frustrated.

Despite all that, this book was really great and I know anyone who loves mystery, goriness, and a hint of the magic, and even those who just want to read it out of curiosity would get hooked. And even if you did start on the 2nd book, you won't really miss out much - believe me. Also, the flaws of the story that I've pointed out doesn't necessarily change the fact that over-all this has been a brilliant story. Keep up the good work, Mr. James.

Chris James continues Jacob Silver’s demise in the next instalment of ‘Alchemy’ with this surreal and imaginative Victorian world of dastardly deeds and murderous intentions.

In Book One, it was believed that the souls of ladies with certain traits could be captured to create an elixir, which would promise immortality to the person consuming it. Well, following lively courtroom exchanges, Jacob Silver was found guilty of being a wicked serial killer and had been sentenced to death.

Young Lizzie, whom Jacob unknowingly cured of consumption with his potions, never believed the verdict and vowed to clear his name, despite her father’s insistence that she should leave the damned thing alone.

This outing sees the battle to prove immortality exists and to discover the identity and whereabouts of the elusive professor, who coached Jacob in the dark science yet absconded without a trace when the arrests for murder of the ladies were being made. A mysterious, crooked villain is starting to make appearances at the site of many a hideous scene in Book Two. Despite the development of revolutionary techniques to gather evidence, this cloaked figure is one step ahead of the humble authorities, who bumble through the investigation with the lives of many a civilian in their hands.

There’s much more back history in this story. We’re transported hundreds of years into the past to offer an explanation how an Alchemist’s recipe for immortality came into existence and provide more plausibility of the science applied in the early 20th century and, more importantly, the reasons for the specific ingredients that were used.

Turning Silver to Gold is a blend of horror, fantasy, crime and history. It’s gritty and imaginative, and there’s some great character interaction – I loved it when Conan Doyle’s fabulous investigative medical services were called for to address the inexplicable. Then we discover that Queen Victoria isn’t fussed about bending the rules when it suits her, and I don’t think her subjects would be amused!

Although a new love interest is on the cards for Lizzie, knowing whether Jacob is innocent or guilty is always in the forefront of her mind – especially when she discovers his corpse is no longer secured in his coffin. History could easily repeat itself and someone may get away with murder…the question is – whose?

There are some great lines and bizarre occurrences, which it’s best not question, just set reality aside for a while and enjoy. I’d also strongly suggest you read Book One first, as you’ll appreciate Jacob Silver’s predicament much, much more.

(My thanks to the author for providing a digital copy of this book for review purposes.)

Have I ever mentioned how much I love a well written mystery thriller able to keep me on the edge of my seat as I read page after page after page, just waiting to see how the action unfolds? If I haven’t, I shall mention it now and state that Chris James’ wonderful novel “Alchemy: turning Silver to Gold” falls in such a category.

The author’s first novel was beautifully written and gripping from beginning to end; however, as it is often the case with sequels I had been expecting the second book in the series to be a step behind it in quality. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was not the case. The book was even better than the first, the action more gripping and the characters wonderfully developed. Chris James manages to deliver a delightfully dark and macabre novel set in Victorian London that keeps the reader hooked from the very beginning till the end. I was literally unable to let this book down until I finished it and by then I had been taken on a veritable literary rollercoaster.

Stunning, captivating, with splendid scenes that just make everything else fade to the background and witty lines that had me bursting in laughter, Chris James managed to place his second novel on my “favorite books of 2015” list. I am looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

This continues the story of Jacob Silver and those around him. Lizzie whom he cured from consumption and adores him although has her suspicions as to whether he is alive or not having found his empty coffin. Her father –Sir Robert Weston, who we get a surprise with, who has the ear of the Queen and is in further than we would have believed. Inspector George Neville who in turn adores Lizzie and believes her story, goes to great lengths to prove her claims and to dispose of certain macabre items left behind by either Jacob or maybe it was someone wanting him to look guilty??
A sequel can sometimes be disappointing compared to the original. This does not disappoint at all. There are some “OMG” scenarios but there are also some “OMG!” laugh moments too. This book does not stand alone and you need to have read the first in order to appreciate the second although the gaps are filled in as a reminder.
A book I looked forward to after enjoying the first one, which in its self was not normally my type of book but enjoying it has to be a recommendation. This one was even better and I look forward to book three.

"Alchemy: Silver to Gold" is the follow up to Chris James' debut "Alchemy: a story of perfect murder". And unlike some sequels, you need to read the first to understand the second!

Is Jacob dead? Does the elixir work? Where is Nicolas Flanel? Lizzie Weston wants answers and she's going to get them...somehow!!

Silver to Gold picks up where Alchemy left off following Lizzie in her hunt for answers but also exploring the history of the infamous Alchemy book. The book builds on the intrigue of its predecessor with more bodies dropping in the name of science.

For me it is slightly bonkers in places but it fitted the situation and setting of the story. Alchemy stretched my imagination and transported my to Victorian England. Silver to Gold brought me into the early 20th century and along with it the changes in police procedure and investigation.

Alchemy: Silver to Gold did not disappoint and I pray there is a part 3 in the not too distant future. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Many thanks to Chris James for this advanced copy of the book.

Alchemy: turning silver to gold takes us on another trip to Victorian London, following the sensational hanging of Jacob Silver. This definitely needs to be read in conjunction with Alchemy: a story of perfect murder as it won’t make much sense as a stand-a-lone novel and it follows on directly from the first book.

Where the first Alchemy book was about the quest for immortality, this second book in the series examines whether immortality has actually been achieved, thanks to the elixir that Jacob gave to his friend Lizzie Weston. Lizzie emerges unscathed from some life-threatening events and she begins to believe she is immortal, all the while you feel that all of these strange happenings are being orchestrated by the legendary Nicolas Flamel.

Although Jacob doesn't appear until halfway through the book, Lizzie is a main character who had me enthralled. She has an air of the supernatural about her, having miraculously survived consumption and an explosion, and I felt she almost glowed from within the pages of this book.

I did really enjoy this but not as much as the first book as some parts were a bit too fantastical for my liking; I was okay with the chattering evil decapitated heads in jars but Lizzie's effect on them was a bit puzzling. Perhaps it will become clearer in the third book, for which I can't wait, thanks to the amazing cliffhanger at the end of this book. Chris James has certainly mastered the art of making the reader eager for more! As with the first book, I thought the spectacle of the trial was described brilliantly; the writing is so vivid that I felt I could have been sat in the public gallery myself.

As with the first book, there are some famous faces making an appearance in the story and this all adds to the authentic flavour of the book. Chris James has managed to completely immerse the reader in the Victorian era, although I did question whether the ‘f’ word was in use back then. I can see this being a series of books I will re-read over the years, they are very entertaining and I'm such a greedy reader as I'm already looking forward to the next one.

I must say that I am truly enjoying this series so far. This is the second book and it was just as great as the debut novel.

Though we do see a lot of the story through Lizzie’s eyes, the point of view does switch between several characters at times. However, it is done well and flows wonderfully. The characters were well developed in the first book, but they are more so in this one. I have to say that while I do really like all of the characters, except Flamel of course, Lizzie is my favorite. I must also add that I didn’t see the ending coming and it caught me off guard, which is not a bad thing. I am very curious to see what will happen in the next installment, and hopefully we won’t have to wait too awfully long to find out.

If you are looking for something different in a mystery that is a bit dark and macabre with some supernatural elements, then you will want to pick this one up. I do highly recommend it but I also recommend that you read the first book Alchemy: The Story of Perfect Murder.

I am really enjoying this Alchemy series by Chris James. It wasn’t at all what I expected. I can hardly begin to explain it to people. The world that author James has created, the minutely intricate mystery, the twists and turns, the supernatural factor woven into the storyline, it’s so elaborate I can’t imagine how someone could come up with a book such as this. I’m not one for period stories but I had no problem with this one or the first. I was completely engrossed in the story as it went from the point of view of character to character, all linking up just perfectly, answering the questions of my mind and throwing the strangest twists and turns into the plot. Pretty strange stuff, and completely different than anything I’ve ever read, which is really refreshing. This book picks up right after book 1. You’ll need to read book 1 for sure before you read this book, and then you’ll want to read this one too as soon as you finish up the first, so go ahead and buy them book at once and save yourself some time. I can’t wait to get the third book in my hands now, as I’m completely enthralled with the story of Jacob Silver.

First up this is a great next instalment to Alchemy and if you haven’t read the first book, do yourself a favour and read it first, you won’t be disappointed.
The author jumps right back to the great style and setting of the first novel and really doesn’t miss a beat. Sometimes when the next book of a series comes out it loses the magic or feel of the first, not so in this case. All the mystery and plot twists are back in action as well as the darkness. I must say I absolutely love the Victorian setting; I just like everything about it and just “get” it. The book as usual is really well written and the characters really come to life, it won’t take you long to be totally engrossed in the story and the courtroom parts get pretty intense. It’s a real page turner and I really can’t wait for more in this series. Five stars from me.

Like the first book I find it hard to write a review other than saying it is a brilliant read. The author takes you on a weird, supernatural and entertaining adventure with so many twists and turns in the case of Jacob Silver, is he a murderer or not? You can't but help liking Lizzie as she tries to prove Jacob is innocent.
I found it very hard to put the book down, and I wouldn't be surprised if Chris James's "Alchemy" ends up being a TV drama or even a film. It is that good and I recommend it.

Pure brilliance. I liken the reading of this book to riding a rollercoaster. Full of ups and downs surprises and intrigue, it does not disappoint. This is the second book in the series and in my opinion took the series to even greater heights. The characters are real and believable balancing out the craziness they’re faced with. I highly recommend this book to any mystery lover and cannot wait to read the third book! A++

A brilliant book, the world james has built there's so many different outcomes/alleyways that the author visits it's hard to explain in words but you're mind is on one big trip. This book is different than anything i've ever read and i suggest to give this a read.

Read this sequel "Turning Silver to Gold" as soon as I had finished the first book "A story of perfect murder". Both the books are part of Alchemy series.

The story starts exactly where it was left unfinished in the previous book. The cliffhanger there does get suitably answered. However, the plot continues to be a continuation of the previous story. Yet again there is a trial. Yet again there is the shift of focus from the past to the present. However, but for the increase in the violence and horror, the plot is a continues repetition of the old.

Chris is a promising writer. Yet, except for the increase in the graphic content and the increase in the insanity of the anti-hero, the sequel actually fizzles out in comparison with the first. The imageries are gory and horrific. They are definitely disturbing but that is all about it.

There is one character besides the anti-hero in this story who is worth giving a second thought. That is Lizzie Weston. Sadly, she is not the kind to last in your memory for ever. There is a supposedly evil professor, yet in trying to turn the silver-like plot into gold, he has made not much contribution.

To sum up, this sequel is ok for a single reading. However, the graphic violence, too many characters and the ending may put you off.

P.S- Thank you Maxine and Booklovers Catlady Publicity for giving me this book in exchange of an honest review.

Alchemy: Turning Silver to Gold I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Mr James has done it again!  Another fantastic historical crime novel following the story of Jacob Silver.  Spanning the 20 odd years since Jacob Silver was hanged for the murders of his beloved models and his love's Sister, Rebecca. This story begins with Lizzie Weston convinced that Jacob was innocent of all the murders and may well be alive and well after she discovered his grave empty.

Within 3 years of setting out to clear his name, Miss Weston has convinced the police and convinced them to have him posthumously pardoned by Queen Victoria.  Unbeknownst to Lizzie and almost every other person on the planet, the Queen and Lizzie's father had their own plan to save Jacob from the hangman's noose. One that remains undiscovered for many years after both had passed away...

Crime is what Chris James knows, and his knowledge certainly shows with both this and the first novel in the series, Alchemy: A Perfect Murder.  I'm definitely eager to learn when the 3rd book in the series will be published.

This the second book in the Alchemy series gets 5/5 stars.

A much more complex follow-on from the first book, yet very enjoyable. This story drifts back and forward in time to answer many of the questions this reader didn't know she had from book one. Characters common to both develop most satisfactorily as they intertwine with real world events.

Bringing the world of Victorian England and all its engineering and medical discoveries to life, this book continues the tale of the science of the macabre. With its roots in the Middle Ages, the reader discovers the origins of the quest for the elixir of life and an understanding of the strange elements demanded.

A very different read and none the less enjoyable for its 'strangeness' it would make a fabulous Hammer House of Horror movie - though preferably without today's special effects!

The question remains: is there a book three yet to come?

Another outstanding book by Chris James. This sequel continues the dark macabre story of Jacob Silver. As the murders continue and the hunt for the killer continues you are left pondering if Silver is guilty after all? Is it all a fragment of his imagination or is he actually the killer?
Could a single mind be that dark and deranged that you could be completely oblivious to you own actions? Or is Silver 'that ' clever he can have you believing that he is innocent and it is all the workings of a dark and twisted other?
Does he hold the secret to immortality ? Or is he just delusional?

A thoroughly intriguing book extremely well written, with plots, twists and conspiracy that has you on the edge of your seat anticipating the next page.
I eagerly await book three.

This is a great follow-up. From different points of view we uncover the story both before and after the first book. It has beautifully written grisly details, rich descriptions and wonderful characters just like the first book. For me the first book teetered on the edge of 'explainable' and supernatural and we were left unsure of whether the totally weird events actually happened or whether they were just experienced in the mind of a madman. In this book that doubt is taken away. I was a bit disappointed with this to be honest, but don't get me wrong I still loved it.
