Ken Preston is the author of the Joe Coffin series of books, best described as gangsters versus vampires in Birmingham UK. He is also the author of zombie/cowboy mash-up Population:DEAD!, Satan meets Blackbeard pirate novel, The Devil and Edward Teach, and Speaking in Tongues, a short story about death, sex, rock n roll and God. He has also had several short stories published in magazines and anthologies, and writes romance under the name of MJ Jackson. Ken is also a creative writing teacher for children in years 5 and 6 and also children in years 7 to12, as well as adults. He spends far too much time in his cellar, making stuff up, whilst his two cats prowl over his desk and computer keyboard, adding their own little additions to his stories. Ken lives just a few doors down from the house where Jack the Ripper was born. (Allegedly.) If you have read any of his books, or even if you haven’t, but just want a chat, Ken can be reached at kenpreston@kenpreston.co.uk
Project Wormhole is the first book in a new series by Ken Preston, author of the Joe Coffin series. While Joe Coffin is aimed at an adult audience, Project Wormhole's target audience is middle school to young adult. It does not have any sex but it does have violence. Some of the scenes are tense so if you have a younger child or one who does not like scary scenes, read the book yourself first.
The premise of the book is that a top secret experiment goes horribly wrong. An unnatural storm hits the Birmingham, England. The storm brings lightning, thunder, torrential rain and dinosaurs. Yes dinosaurs. The project creates a wormhole that throws the past, the long past, into the present with disastrous results.
The main characters of the book are three young students. Daniel, who recently lost his mother, is running away from the research base where he father is working on top secret project at a secure military base. Will and Lee are students on a class trip to a museum. Lee is an American, recently moved to England. Will is a bullied and afraid of his own shadow. After the storm passes, the three children find each other and struggle to understand what has happened.
The story has some interesting and unexpected twist and turns. The dinosaurs are worked into the story in a very creative fashion. Some of the monsters are human with their own drive to survive at the cost of other's lives.
This book should appeal to middle school students and older. Many students will identify with one of the three main characters. If you have a reluctant reader, Project Wormhole may interest them enough that they are willing to give it a try.
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for a fair review.
First, This was not My usual Kind of reading, But i love Ken and his Work So i had to give it à Try.
Such a Great decision. What i love most of Ken when he writes is The way he tells the Story, his descriptions magicaly transported me into an other time, I was Just sucked in This Book. In a heart beat i was back in prehistorical Times. I could smell the forest and even hear the dinosaures has i read along.
Awesome book, with great Story, Beautiful written that will keep you guessing Until the end. Loved it and i would recommend it to anyone!
Wow, Ken Preston does it again. I think he is becoming my new favorite author. I already love his Joe Coffin series so I thought I'd take a chance on this new book, and I'm glad I did. Ken's writing transports you into the story and keeps you up late into the night. I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it to everyone not just young adult. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I discovered Ken Preston's books shortly after acquiring my first Kindle. I loved his Joe Coffin books, which are full of vampires and mobsters. This book is a totally different kind of book, but still wildly entertaining.
What would happen if dinosaurs are suddenly walking around amongst us again? Could we survive? This book, written for the YA audience, follows three teenagers who are suddenly thrown forward in time during a massive thunderstorm. Problem is, they discover that dinosaurs were also thrown forward from their time and are now in pursuit of any food they can find (most likely human!).
I love Mr. Preston's writing and his descriptions of the action, the surroundings, and all that is happening is absolutely wonderful! I also enjoy his use of pop culture with things that his readers will recognize (think Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, The Terminator). But, even if you aren't a fan of movies, you will still appreciate the great characters, the fast moving plot and the wonderful writing. And, who doesn't love a villain that won't give up?
This book is targeted at the YA audience, but older readers (like me) will also enjoy it. No swearing or sex, but some violence is present, so be aware of that if you are thinking of this for younger readers.
Of course, some loveable characters meet their demise along the way and the story does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. But, I can't wait to see what happens next in this wild world! I was given the opportunity to read this book by the author and chose to review it.
Fast-moving plot centred on three only children from different dysfunctional families thrown together by a catastrophic event - probably caused by the Project Wormhole of the title. Lisa ('Call me Lee. Most people do') and Will are on a school trip to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery when a massive storm comes from nowhere - and some dinosaurs as well. Daniel has run away from his father and his minder (in Sellafield) but has been recaptured and is being flown back when the plane is hit by the same storm and crashes on Birmingham. They meet and begin exloring a strangely different city...
An intriguing plot - and the sequel (promised for 2016!) promises to maintain the pace. The three core characters are different enough and believable and the catastrophe fits well (think Primeval with a younger cast).
Project wormhole! When experiments go wrong and Dinosaurs are roaming to rule the land once more. Thrown into the future through storms can the unfortunate survive and live along with the dinosaurs? Such a great read, very enjoyable and flows very well. Not the usual Ken Preston story but he pulls it out the bag 😊.
For a Young Adult Read I thoroughly recommend this Book to read for Young Adults up over.....I read this Book for a honest review as part of Reader Team for the Author and I have read Adult Genre written by Ken and again his story written in this Book 1 brought to mind images of what the Characters were experiencing which makes for me worth reading......
I was not sure this book would appeal to me. But Ken Preston, is one of my new favourite authors, so I gave it a chance. I was very quickly enthralled in the project wormhole story. The characters come to life more each chapter, the story keeps you turning the page. And the twists keep you on the edge of your seat! A well done story. I can’t wait for the next part!
Kids on a field trip got far more adventure than they bargained for! I've seen some comparisons to Jurassic Park, but this made me think more of Primeval. A YA read that is heavy on the action, but also includes enough character development to make it a rich story. As the story unfolds the intrigue grows. The most dangerous enemies the kids are facing might just not be the man-eating dinosaurs!
This is another one of those slow burners. Then you find yourself engrossed in an epic battle. Another one of those books that you just can’t put down. Now I have to know what happens in book two. Highly recommended.
Not Kindle Unlimited, think the guy has 'issues' with his home country, but at least he's not whinging on but entertaining with it.

Great story for everyone and intriguing. Lots of dinosaurs for everyone to enjoy. Three boys meet up, and although totally different become friends and have to figure out how to get through this together of course, you want to keep reading to find out. Given this in exchange for an honest review but my reviews are always honest and from me. No one ever pressures for a review. Loved it and appreciated receiving a chance to read it
I enjoyed reading this book, and I received a free copy for an honest review.
The action & suspense in the book are enough to keep you riveted to the story, and it is something you don't really want to imagine happening to you. The story line makes it believable though, and it gives a great idea of what it would be like in this situation.
I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series as they become available, and I believe that any book lover would enjoy reading this book. It is a bit of sci-fi, with action, suspense & thriller thrown in. It keep me wondering what was coming next, and I know that I will be reading all the books that follow.
If "Jurassic Park" moved to Birmingham, England, and then was thrown a couple of decades into the future a la "Planet of the Apes", we would have an adventure story such as Project Wormhole, a young adult time travel story from the writing talent that is Ken Preston. I generally don't enjoy the majority of young adult works, especially when they focus on the angsty, hormonal-driven issues that many teenagers seem mired in these days. This book, however, although clearly written for a younger audience and starring three teenagers, kept my interest throughout and was not marred by any overly dramatic teenaged crap. Instead, Wil, Daniel, and Lee were too busy literally running for their lives from dinosaurs or scavenging from a changed Birmingham landscape in order to survive into the next day.
I loved the first half of the book, which introduces our three main characters: Daniel, who's the neglected son of a research scientist who may have caused this entire time travel disaster; Lee, an American exchange student who learned her survival skills from her Marine dad; and Will, a bespeckled and bullied kid who befriends Lee in the library before the shit hits the fan. In particular, I enjoyed these three youngsters and their story when they were on their own, struggling to make the right decisions in a crazy landscape. Once they met up with other survivors and started learning about the farming aspects of certain dinosaurs, I kinda sorta lost interest. (I guess if I ever was to go back in time, or forward, or ...whatever...I would rather be a hunter-gatherer than a farmer. More mobility, more uncertainty, more action. Until the velociraptor comes knocking for your dino-cow.)
I digress. Awesome book. Read it. Give a copy to your tweens and have them read it, too. It's fun and it's a good read.
