Bonnie N. Collide, Nine to Five

Rate this book
The story of Bonnie N. Collide, a roller-girl, and the adventures she has at a humdrum day job. Bonnie’s inability to separate her vibrant roller derby life from her normal working life means she gets to gleefully crash from one aspect of her life into another, seamlessly, and using the same amount of gusto. Oh, and one of her coworkers is a werewolf named Herb.

Gallagher's own words describe this comic better than I ever could: "The story of Bonnie N. Collide, a roller-girl, and the adventures she has at a humdrum day job. Bonnie’s inability to separate her vibrant roller derby life from her normal working life means she gets to gleefully crash from one aspect of her life into another, seamlessly, and using the same amount of gusto. Oh, and one of her coworkers is a werewolf named Herb."

I absolutely can't resist the combo of sweet (and awkward) romances, girl-power derby bonding, office hijinks, and the occasional werewolf humor in this long-running webcomic, now available in print. The people are all drawn so cute! Bonnie herself is exuberant, a steadfast friend, and bi (yay!). There are many queer characters, a significant woman of color character, and the hot derby girls aren't all tiny. It's a soap opera, and I mean that in a good way, so if you need some suds in your life, this is a great one to pick.

This took a while but it wasn't because it wasn't good, it's excellent and on the days I read, I binged!

Bonnie N. Collide is an on-going, newspaper strip style webcomic on Bonnie, a Derby player. I learned a lot about derby, and it's hilarious. I love Herb and Bonnie and all the derby people (I have reservations on Slam but he was barely introduced towards the end).

Because it's derby, it's a bit queer. There are queer characters and POC characters and there is a surprise

There are a few arcs but it mostly continues. Bonnie has to balance her life and learn to prioritize not only Derby. Her workplace is very different from her, he colleagues too and she meets Stuart who works at another floor. His friends are all scared of her floor! There is a gay werewolf and gossipy colleagues.

In the story there's also Mimi, Bonnie's bestie. Fran, the Freshie who Bonnie is mentoring. Herb and Harold the couple. Cheryl, Stuart's housemate who is in love with him and so many other characters but mostly, it's about Bonnie and sometimes the above mentioned. If reading on the website, there are also bonus sketches. This book contains 361 strips.

This was a fun story that made me laugh. It was about Bonnie, who works in an office, and she derby races when she isn't working. I loved her attitude and willingness to be herself.

Charming. Lots of heart. Good humor. Werewolves. Roller girls. What's not to love?

I discovered Monica Gallagher's Bonnie comics on Etsy & jumped at the opportunity to own this great collection, when I saw it being offered through Kickstarter! Monica brings her charming characters to life with her writing & artwork. Yes, she does it all! You can read her Bonnie N. Collide, Nine to Five comics on her website, but I do urge you to purchase this collection or pick up some of the single issues, if you're enjoying the comic! Support this creator. :)
