Mary Elizabeth was born and raised in Southern California. She is a wife, mother of four beautiful children, and dog tamer to one enthusiastic Pit Bull and a prissy Chihuahua. She's a hairstylist by day but contemporary fiction, new adult author by night.

Mary can often be found finger twirling her hair and chewing on a stick of licorice while writing and rewriting a sentence over and over until it's perfect. Lowen and Poesy are a very special couple to me. When I read their story, I couldn’t get it out of my head. It stayed on my mind for weeks. So of course I was anxious to get more of their story. Poesy is a prequel written from Poe’s POV.

We all know how hard Low had it growing up. He grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and there were times his family couldn’t pay rent or they didn’t have enough to eat. It was always assumed that Poesy had it much easier, and maybe she did when it came to those things. But there were things that Low had that she never had. Not until she met and fell in love with Lowen.
“I don’t live like you do, Poesy.”

“Tell me how it feels,”

“To struggle? To not know where your next meal will come from of if you’ll be able to pay the rent? You don’t want to know how that feels.”

“No, tell me how it feels to live with people who love you.”

It just breaks your heart, right? I love Poesy and Low so much. Poe has a lot of strength and determination. I loved seeing things from her perspective. What she was willing to do and the security she was willing to give up to be with the man she loved.

Mary Elizabeth’s writing is something special. It’s always lyrical, beautiful and has that unique quality that no one else has. I will read anything she writes for that reason alone. It doesn’t hurt that her stories are also fantastic. I loved getting more of Low and Poe and their epic love story. It’s not the most traditional romance, but their love is beautiful and I loved every second of reading this one.
“Even crooks love.”

Mary Elizabeth delivers a great little novella from Poesy Ashby’s pov. She gifts readers with the backstory of how a girl from the right side of the tracks falls in love with a criminal. This novella is just what fans needed to grasp the hows and feels that drew these two characters together in the first place.

”Tell me how it feels to live with people who love you.”

Overall this is well worth the read if you enjoyed these characters and were itching to get a glimpse into their origins and truly connect further with Poesy Ashby. Though a reader knows how their love story ends for me, this novella only added to the depth of my feelings for them!

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Type: Book 0.5 from Low series
POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

Poesy Ashby grew up in a comfortable middle class family. She was provided with everything she wanted except what she needed the most - parental love.

When their gardener Lowen Seely noticed her, she basked in his attention. A girl from the right side of the track, with a boy from the wrong side of the track brought together by love that showed love could survive any hard road.

I love Low and Poesy in Low. Now we get to see how their love blossomed amidst the thorns.

“Tell me how it feels,”
“To struggle? To not know where your next meal will come from or if you’ll be able to pay the rent? You don’t want to know how that feels.”
“No. Tell me how it feels to live with people who love you.”

Poesy's family life was sad. For a girl who has everything, deep down she was just a lonely and in need of emotional support and she gave back ten fold to people who provided her with it.

He’s my favorite thing. The most precious one. The only person who’s ever loved me unconditionally and totally.

I love how she accepted Low, even after seeing his life and how bad it could be. She took risks and sacrificed for him and his family. Their love was unconditional, that's why I still love the ending.

“If I never met you, Poesy, there would be nothing for me to fight for."

Poesy is a prequel novella chronicling the couple before they were crooks. It should be read after Low due to plot spoilers.

When you read a prequel Novella for a character you didn't necessarily care for in the previous book, what do you hope to learn?

In 'Low', Poesy Ashby was a difficult character for me to like. I felt she was more of a bad influence on Low than he was on her. I believed he would have fought harder to do the right thing (and possibly won), had it not been for her. So for me, it was important that this book, 'Poesy', provide us with an understanding of the desperation Poe felt, as well provide us with an understanding for her poor decision-making.

I am happy to say, I found those answers within the pages of this book.

I felt sorry for Poe. I knew she was born into the middle-class and unto neglectful parents, who were more concerned with their own lives than her. She was an inconvenience. I KNEW it. It wasn't until reading 'Poesy' that I truly understood how terrible living in a home like hers was and why she clung to Low and his family.
"Mom was emotionally foul.
Dad was just emotionless.
He resents his wife for getting pregnant after a few drunken LA weekends, and he resents me for being born."

I finally understand Poesy. I understand who she is. I may still blame her for pulling Low over the good and bad line, but I understand her passion and her drive. I felt her undeniable love and need to be loved.

orange divider

Mary Elizabeth's trademark prose is present in this book,
"Like there's an invisible line in the road; bums and playas don't pass "Go" and collect two hundred dollars when things get fancy, and the uppity avoid the mark leading to the dark side like they'll catch "poor" by breathing the same air as the less fortunate.
Both parts of town feel like home.
Both welcome me with open arms."

To me, this was a perfect description of Poesy's circumstances. Where does she fit in? On which "side of the tracks" does she belong?

I could feel the desperation to belong, to feel needed, wanted, loved. She soaked it up like the flowers Low watered and cultivated. I loved the stark contrast between the families, one was riddled with love, the other, indifference. So while I may not agree with her choices, I understand why she made them.
"Little things such as this---small displays of affection I've been starved for my entire life---are some of the reasons I've fallen for him."

Overall, I enjoyed 'Poesy'. I definitely love Mary Elizabeth's writing. Her sentence structure and word choice suck me in every time! Her writing is beautifully descriptive which is in contrast to the heavy storyline. Her characters are thoroughly developed and intriguing. My only criticism is I would have liked this part of the story added to 'Low', and not be its own book. BUT that did not take away from my enjoyment of it, nor did it affect my rating. Because while I would have liked these answers sooner, and to have heard from Poe in the 'Low', I was thrilled to get revisit this couple!

POESY: Poesy is a short re-cap prequel which starts right back where it all started in LOW this is solely from Poesey's Perspective.

Poesy Ashby lives in a dysfunctional uncaring world, living with a mother who was more invested in herself rather than the child she gave birth to, and a father who was an emotionless robot that resented Poesy for being born.

Always feeling as though she was an inconvenience it was only a matter of time when she broke the restraints of being drowned in a loveless house.

It didn't take long to get caught up with the feels with this book like I felt with Low, I never want this journey to end, Low stayed with me many weeks/months after I'd finished reading it. It just doesn't get any better than this, reconnecting with loved characters.

Villain and hero.

Everyone's favorite criminal and his girl are back.! And now you can read their story from the beginning told in Poesy's POV.

If you haven't read Low, I really recommend you do. The story of Low and Poesy is one I couldn't get out of my head. It’s beautiful and touching and lyrical and TRUST ME when I say you'll find yourself routing and falling in love with this misunderstood outlaw and his girl.

Sometimes you just need a little bit more. A little more background on the characters…well, just a little more. After falling in love with Poesy and Lowen in Low, we felt we just needed a little more introduction and build up to the intense love they shared and that’s exactly what Mary Elizabeth has given us in Poesy.

‘He’s my favorite thing. The most precious one. The only person who’s ever loved me unconditionally and totally.’

Low was a heart pounding, emotional and thrilling modern day Bonnie and Clyde romance that had us gripped in its every exhilarating moment and the only issue we had was that we would have loved the relationship between Poesy and Lowen to have been explored a little further prior to the commencement of the crux of the story.

‘It’s him and me. The boy from the wrong side of the tracks, and the girl from the right side. Villain and hero. Worthless and worthy.’

With Poesy we got what we wished for. Poesy begins from the first time Low and Poesy met, so we get to connect with them from the very beginning and it was a welcome insight into this period of their lives.

Starved of affection, in Low, Poesy found the love and protection she was always denied by her emotionally stinted parents. In their eyes, Poesy was an inconvenience to be ignored as much as possible. What she had in material wealth, she lacked severely in physical and emotional wealth, Low provided that for Poesy.

‘He’s hard where I am soft. He’s big where I am small. He’s calm where I am crazy.’

For those who loved this couple in Low, we recommend grabbing this book. For those who haven’t read Low, we must warn that the epilogue contains a HUGE spoiler for Low and it therefore our recommendation that if you are new to these books that you read Poesy, skip over the epilogue and head straight into Low - then come back to read the epilogue from Poesy’s pov.

4.5 -prequel- stars

Brilliant short novella, adding enhancement to the already emotional story that was Low.

In Book #1, we went through the journey in Low's POV where the MC's were already in an established relationship. Book #0.5 POSEY starts prior to where Low started and tells us the story of how the H & h met and fell in love, all through Poesy's POV.

There was nothing new or unveiling to this story that book #1 hadn't already told me, but it was just super awesome to get reacquainted and be gifted the beautifully expanded details on all the little things that I really wanted to know from book #1.

I would highly recommend reading Low first, as the epilogue to POESY has pretty much the exact same ending, which would then be a major spoiler for those who haven't yet read Low. There was nothing new to this ending that that the author hadn't already outlined in Low but it still hit me in the feels just as hard the 2nd time round.

Definitely not a time-wasting novella/prequel.

It doesn't matter what this woman comes up with. Every word, any word, goes straight to the heart. Mary, has a way with creating such beauty in chaos as I've read before, and it's simply true. I've said it once, I've said it twice, Mary is one of the best authors I've ever had the opportunity to experience. It's like being on a therapeutic ride. Anytime I read a book of hers I just feel
Lighter, happier.

I am so happy to get more of Lowen and Poesy. There love story is so much then the trouble that follows them. To hear what Poesy was going through, what she thought of Low, how fierce her devotion was to him makes me miss them so much more. This novella was absolutely perfect. There is no other criminal now or ever compare to Low.

This book should really be more #1.5

In MY OPINION I didn't need to read her POV. I can understand readers who loved Low wanting to know Posey's thoughts and a little bit more about her. Low is one of my favorite reads of this year. It sort of left an impact and I remember not being able to move when I was done reading it. Lots to think about with this read.

Well heck. Poe's story while a novella is packed full of the intensity we got in Low. Mary Elizabeth has a way with her words. I blissfully drown in them. Her use of adjectives as nouns make me swoon in literary pleasure. Words that grab at all my senses, caress them into the raw, simple yet consuming love between Poesy Ashby and Lowen Seely.
Years defy chronology that Poe is wise, observant, tenacious and all in. She gives with haste and without judgment that Lowen never wavers in his belief of the depth of their feelings for each other. Lowen never stood a chance the moment he set eyes on the blonde while trimming the roses in her front yard. Because in the end even crooks love.

The Good:
Everything! This novella was an excellent addition to Low and really helped show where Poe came from and how she came to be Low's lady love. I am actually thinking of reading them together (super nerd I know) so that it will be like reading one awesome book! This book does a great job in filling in details that we miss when we only get Low's POV since he is gone for a long time. And I really loved that we got more of a look into Poesy's family because I always had so many questions around them.

The Better: (because there is literally no bad with this book)
As always Mary Elizabeth creates a story that pulls the reader in and just makes you want to stay there. And I think one thing I love about this book is that the cover matches Low's so you know they belong together because even crooks need love and so do girls who are stuck in the middle of the tracks. Honestly the fact that it was a surprise release was so awesome! I almost prefer not to know when my favorite books are coming out so that I don't obsess over it! Thank you for the amazing surprise! I can't wait to add the physical copy to Poesy's boyfriend because they belong together in any and all forms <3!

The Recommendation:
Go buy this book right now! And if you haven't read Low buy him too ( you can see my thoughts on this one here Review for Low by Mary Elizabeth)! They are both only 99 pennies right now! That's a fabulous deal and totally worth it! 5 Stars!! maybe even like 25 stars because it is that fabulous!

*Read Low before you read Poesy* Sometimes a POV switch of the same story is unsuccessful and then there are times where you just love seeing another character's emotions and actions and thoughts play out and you become invested in their lives and that to me makes for a successful POV switch. I adored Low, it was one of my favorite books ever. A modern day Bonnie and Clyde with a Thelma and Louise type twist- that book still sticks with me and the emotions it evoked were brought back with Poesy. You also get to see a better view of Poesy's background with her neglectful parents that was more or less glossed over in Low, since that book was told from his POV and this one hers. This is a short novella but it gives you just enough to make it the perfect complement to Low and finish the story of these two lovers in a complete way. I gave it 5 stars and I recommend it to everyone that likes a true tragic love story, only these two are far from your typical Romeo and Juliet romance. Just make sure you read Low first- this book will hold little meaning to you otherwise. ~ Kellie for Eye Candy Bookstore

Poesy is a novella that takes place before the events of Low. It's a short book that I read in a short time. But that doesn't make me love it any less.

Seeing things from Poesy's view. Learning how she felt about Low, and the way she handled things.

You wouldn't think a girl like Poesy, one who grew up in a stable home on the right side of the tracks would be the type of girl to go for Lowen, the boy who's all wrong. But as we see in the book, Poesy isn't the girl who fits into the society she was born.

We learn things about Poesy and her household that we didn't get to in Low. When Poesy tells Low over and over in the first book that she was meant for that life with him, she wasn't kidding. The two of them seem to be made for a life of crime with each other.

Mary Elizabeth takes us deeper into the world of Low and Poesy, she gives us an epic love that we just have to respect and remember because they aren't your typical fairytale.

Who knew you could live criminals so much, but I guess when it's Poesy and Low anything is possible.

Was this a joke?

Am I being punked?

First let me say, I feel like this shouldn't be read before Low. That's just my honest opinion.

I am just really baffled because the Poesy that was in THIS book is completely different than the Poesy that I read in Low. Which Poesy is it? I didn’t feel like she was consistent at all with the first story I read, which I loved.

“He’s hard where I am soft.
He’s big where I am small.
He’s calm where I am crazy.”

I don’t remember Poesy being “crazy” in Low though. It’s actually very depressing to me because Mary’s books are always a MUST BUY for me. But to me, this book was definitely unnecessary for me. It really didn’t tell me anything different than what I read in Low (plot and POV wise).

The good thing is: it’s a novella, so it was super short. The bad thing was: it didn’t leave an impression on my quite like Low or her other books did.

Where do I start?? At the beginning of this year I read Low, that book was so powerful and moving that I've had a hard time reading anything else!
Until... Posey. Posey is everything that we didn't know and wished we had! All of my questions from Low were answered!
You get a snapshot at what it was like for Posey to wait. And, waiting is the hardest part when you love someone.
I don't wanna spoil this whole novella for ya, but, I will say... Mary, you've got a lifelong fan in me. Your writing is amazing and heartfelt. Your stories are believable and real.
If you've read Low, you're gonna need to read this one! And, if you're like me and love Mary's writing, you'll grab all her other books also! ;)
Happy reading!

This book was okay for me.

I did appreciate that this whole novella is about Poesy because in Low, we didn't really get background on her and how her life was like really with her parents. Who don't really care about her but provide for her in the most basic way.

So, it was alright. I think you should read it if you read Low and want a little more of Low and Poesy.

Minor complaint I have is that Poesy was hanging out with these black girls and there names were bascially ghetto names. A black person is still a black person if they have a "regular" name.

Just my two cents.

I have never wanted the bad guys to succeed as much as I wanted Low and Poesy to. Low was such a wild ride that I jumped at the chance to learn more about Poesy and I'm so glad I did.

In Low, we learned she grew up with a difficult life but we didn't get too much information there. In Poesy, we learn more about how she turned into who she is.

This is a fantastic novella for all Low fans. I'm so glad Mary Elizabeth wrote this book!

Loved...

I read Low a few nights ago and fell in love with their love story. Felt so bad for the struggles that Low had to endure. But happy Poesy came along to make his life bright. Worth living.
Sometimes in life we make poor choice. Some to survive like Low.
Luck wasn't on their side.
Really enjoyed reading Poesy's side of the story.
