Jerry Belanger's indispensable guidance for goat owners continues in a revised edition of his popular handbook, RAISING MILK GOATS THE MODERN WAY. It includes more information about diseases and medication, new breed information, barn plans, recipes for goat milk products, and more. Belanger's reassuring, often humorous style makes reading about goats almost as much fun as raising them.
In addition to writing books, Jerome D. (JD) Belanger founded Countryside and Small Stock Journal in 1969, sheep! magazine, Backyard Poultry in 1979, Dairy Goat Guide, and Rabbit World. He was an organic farmer for several years, and a homesteader for most of his life. Now retired in northern Wisconsin, he is known locally for his 30,000 spring bulbs and extensive collection of rare and unusual conifers.
As I've told everyone that asks: no. I won't tell you why I'm reading about dairy goats. Everyone will know well enough when my sinister plan comes to fruition.
With that said, this offered an excellent synopsis of care and management. I was especially pleased with the way the author provided ample scientific and technical information, but still maintained a sense of wonder and an attention to ecological concerns. (In reality, they're part and parcel to the goating experience, though few seem to remember it.)
Now I'm even more lonely for my handful of backyard livestock. Goats are wonderful little people and, like chickens, they offer surprisingly high returns for low input.
I want to raise GOATS! And while this was written in the 70s, it still has the longstanding basics of raising goats. Great for a beginners like us! So, until we have some land, I'll keep dreaming and reading!
