Well...I wish I could say that I loved it but I simply couldn't connect to the characters, like at all. Maybe it's just me or something but I felt like they were having too much sex, yes, I actually said the words too much, and not enough honest conversations. And there was a lot that was left unsaid, so that bothered me. If I had more insight into what their personalities were really like, then perhaps I would believe in their actions and emotions more. I wanted more depth but otherwise the story is sweet with a hint of sadness because of what happened to someone Leif loved were much and no, it has nothing to do with a woman (those were just his coping mechanism I guess). Both, Leif and Delany had to fight to make this relationship work but in the end it played out well for them. I only wished we'd get an epilogue, to see how they were doing in future. But oh well...

So, all in all, if you like a short sexy story then you should definitely give it a try. :)

'Lone Wolf' by Tessa Clarke is book one in the "The Wolf Shifters of Raven Ridge' series. This is the story of Delany Nichols and Leif Pierce. This book is almost 100 pages.
Delany has moved to the area to help take over a veterinary clinic. Since Delany is new to the area the retiring vet ask her to go out on the field to work with some of the ranchers so that she can get to know them. On one visit she meet Leif who she is immediately attracted to. Delany is visiting his ranch to help him with a Bald Eagle that has been hurt. Which leads them into transporting it to another hospital and they end up spending the day together. They also spend the night together and the next morning she wakes up alone. Their story leads you through a lot of emotions and we see their feelings grow and overcome Leif's past.

I don’t usually choose books that are less than 100 pages, but Lone Wolf appealed to the paranormal junkie in me. Add in the fact the heroine is a veterinarian and I just couldn’t resist.

Leif was broken, a shifter who’d lost something precious in Afghanistan, he’s flailing around not really knowing how to get over what happened. Thinking his life will always be incomplete, he decided to leave his brothers and strike out on his own as a lone wolf. Since the family tradition is that brothers share a mate, this was not a popular decision with his brothers, along with the fact they were genuinely worried about him. For such a short book we did get a surprising amount of depth into Leif’s character but still not as much as I would have liked.

Delany was sweet and caring, but that’s about all the insight into her we’re given. The lack of a backstory on her left a huge hole in this story that I really wanted to be filled in. I liked her, but I didn’t know her well enough to really form much of an opinion.

Leif and Delany had an instant connection that he almost destroyed because of his demons. Add in the fact that his brothers wanted Delany too…things got a little weird. I found myself wondering about some of Delany’s actions. Then I really wanted to drop kick Leif’s brother, Wyatt, who came off as a pushy horse’s ‘behind’. Delaney didn’t really do anything wrong, I just found myself raising my eyebrows a couple times.

Lone Wolf was definitely short and sweet and at times very hot. This would be a good choice when you want a steamy and quick book, provided you don’t mind something without a lot of meat on its bones.

Ok. This book started out strong. The ground work was interesting. Nothing too heavy and it was believable. But, somewhere around the 30% mark, things got cheesy and insta-love crazy. Now, with a paranormal romance insta-love happens all the time. But this story didn't feel like a paranormal story. The whole shifter aspect was basically a side story that never really felt any importance to this story at all. Throw in some random storyline about sharing with brothers and all of the sudden a short book became too complicated for a book of this nature. Maybe if the author used more time to develop this story I would've liked the added elements. But, for being only 90 pages, it really made the whole thing fall flat on it's face.

A quick, steamy read. This story was a different take on a shifter love story, which kept my attention and I read it in one sitting. This was a good read. I look forward to future books with these characters.

I love shifter stories, especially about wolves, however this one just didn't work for me. It had a great storyline, and I honestly believe that had it been expanded upon would've been a wonderful book. There was hardly any back story for the characters which caused a nonexistent connection for me, and even though I am used to the insta-love/connection with shifters, this didn't make me feel like there was any more than lust between them. Leif, the Hero, stated in the beginning that he did not believe in the mate for life at all, but in the next couple of pages is declaring that he's falling in love with her and that she's his mate, all within what was supposedly a few hours? Delany, the heroine, claimed that she was falling in love the morning after they met and had sex, but by that same afternoon has decided that she doesn't love him and after talking to his brother, calls him a liar for not telling her everything in his past?!? Exactly when was all the talking supposed to take place in between taking care of the injured animal, lunch, and flying back to his place and having sex? It was completely unrealistic, even for an insta-love story. Then you have Wyatt, the eldest brother, show up at their first lunch together and after eating decides that she's the mate for the 5 brothers and basically orders Leif to bring her to dinner to meet the others, without even asking her or how she feels regarding this? I hate giving away spoilers, but all of this happens within the first few pages. Even for a shifter type book, this is all thrown in extremely fast and without any details leading up to or explaining anything.
Like I stated before, I truly believe that this could've been a great book had it been longer, and contained more details regarding the situations and more development of the characters. There were a few things that I did like regarding this story. The way they cared for the injured eagle, the love they showed for their other animals, that the shifters didn't have to hide who/what they were was very interesting, and I liked the other 3 brothers and think each could have a great story about them. Between the lack of connection with the characters, the arrogant brother that continually steps out of line (at least in my opinion), and the lack of development of the story, I was unable to fully enjoy this book. I didn't hate it, but feel as though this may be a book that depends on individual tastes as to weather or not someone would like it. I have heard really good things regarding the next book in this series and may try it out.
This is the first book I have read by this author. Even though I wasn't able to connect with this story, it wasn't due to the writing or lack of interest in the story itself. I know that everyone can't like every single book, which is fine, and why I'm willing to try another book by this author. I hope you understand that these are only my opinions, and that just because I wasn't able to connect with this story, it doesn't mean that others will feel the same. If you're interested in this book but not sure, please request a sample to see if it's something that you can enjoy.

THIS REVIEW MAY NOT BE FIT FOR ALL READERS!

I really wanted to enjoy this book -- a BBW shifter romance? YUM!

Sadly, this book just didn't work for me. The best characters were the animals -- especially the dogs and the eagle the heroine & hero rescued. The lead humans never truly developed beyond their lust for one another (no matter how much they insisted they were in love. Starting five minutes after they met. The hero, especially, read more "stalker" to me, than, "sex machine.")

There's a bucketload of issues with show, don't tell. For serious example, the initial revelation of Leif's werewolf nature. Literally. The text just says, "Especially about being a shifter." First time we've had even a hint of it. Worse, this is internal monologue, so he's not revealing it to anyone but his own brain.

Another thing that lost me about this book was the sexual attraction and the sex itself. The hero was "hard" from the first time he saw the heroine until the last page, or so it seemed. He also had a little solo time just randomly in the kitchen. Seriously. Not in a sexy way, but basically, "Hm hm hm... I'm making coffee. Oh, Delany, I love you." Unzip pants, have fun. It was jarring.

Actually, a lot of the book was jarring. The tone never settled on a balance between sweet and smutty, ricocheting from one to another, sometimes on the same page. One moment, the leads are going along, sweet talking each other, and BAM, we're talking about some of the raunchier words for body parts and sex. Listen, I enjoy dirty talk in my fiction, but there has to be a general expectation that this is going to happen. It felt very much like the writer had read a bunch of sexy books, and just decided to throw the words in where she thought I might fit. There were a few dirty talk moments that just made me wince. And I LOVE dirty talk!

A big pet peeve of mine is the common struggle to describe a woman's sexual arousal. 10 squicky synonyms for "wet" just make me go "ew," they don't turn me on. Seriously. That's what I put in my notes, "ew." Another is calling body parts "generous." Are they going to give me money? That's where my mind goes.

Finally, there was a lot of awkward phrasing and bad grammar in this story. This is one of the problems with many self-publishing authors. If you can afford a REALLY good professional editor, or have a gaggle of first/beta readers to be hard on an author, employ them. It does both the writer and their project a world of good.

This shouldn't have been a bad book. The premise in itself sounded good, or I wouldn't have requested it. Unfortunately, I had to put it down less than halfway through. I'm not usually so hard and authors' hard work, especially if a story engages and entertains me. I can let a lot of things go. But once this book hit about 10 of my NO buttons, I had to let it go with regret.

All of us writers release a not-so-great book or two -- I'm no exception. It's important that we just keep growing. I know Ms.Clarke has other books that I haven't read, and it's entirely possible those are much better. With a good editor, this book could be fun too!

There is such a sadness to Leif. And eventually we’ll understand why that sadness exists. Oh, there are clues throughout the story and by the time of the reveal I had my suspicions confirmed. But it’s not my place to tell you, that’s something you’ll discover as you read Lone Wolf.

As Delany made her way out to the call she was hoping it wasn’t a big animal in need. As the newest veterinarian in the area, her specialty was the companion animals part of the practice – not the cows, bulls, or horses that she was hoping would not be waiting for her at the end of this long country lane. What she discovered was magnificent – and the creature she was here to tend to was pretty amazing too. Even before he spoke there was a spark of something between them – Leif captured her attention immediately and she was hard pressed to put her professional face back on.

Leif is disturbed by his reaction to Delany. Yes, she is a sexy package that he wouldn’t mind getting to know on a much more intimate level – but there was more, when he looked at her – his thoughts were of mates and his alone. Sadness and excitement were battling within him as he began to get to know this incredible woman who could make him feel again with just a glance.

While physically, sexually things were hot and sexy between them. It was in other areas where Leif held back. And when his older brother Wyatt came sniffing around, telling tales he should have kept quiet about that the special feelings between Leif and Delany had its first bit of trouble. Now it’s up to Leif to let go of the past, hold on tight to his future and convince Delany that he is the only one for her.

Lone Wolf is a novella, so there isn’t a lot of time for back stories or details that might have explained what was happening with Leif. Yet, it is there if you will simply see it in the short phrases, the looks, the items surrounding them, the names of the ranches…all the clues were there. The reader simply has to pick up on them. The story is told from both the hero and the heroine’s view points, and that helps in feeling Delany’s frustration and Leif’s overwhelming sadness.

I enjoyed this story very much. And now I’m off to find the next story in this series.

Leif Pierce returned from his tour of Afghanistan changed forever by tragedy and the scars of war on his soul. He has cut himself off from his family and nearly sequestered himself on his Ranch. Delany Nichols has come to take over the domestic animal side of a veterinary clinic. When an emergency forces her to cover a call to Leif's Ranch sparks begin to fly, but Leif's playboy wild past and secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Reader warning: Ms. Clarke's earning of language is important and begins early in the story. If that aspect does not bother you, keep reading. I was off put at first thinking it was gratuitous sex and unnecessary coarse language. I still believe some of the vulgarities could have been toned down, but I found myself wrapped up in the story and unable to stop reading. The characters are well rounded and Leif, a wolf shifter will grab at your heart. You want to sit him down and help him see what he is throwing away and show him that his past is not the thing keeping him drowning in his memories and grief. Delany is a wonderful, caring character that you want to have her happily ever after with the right man, or men. I look forward to reading Sam's story next and the brothers is scheduled for release soon as well. Lone Wolf is a captivating story that will leave you craving more of the Wolf Shifters of Raven Ridge. My rating is 5 out of stars.

Dalaney’s new job was as a country vet.She was eventually taking over Barry’s practice with another vet named Sam. San wasn’t there yet but when he got there he would handle the farm animal side of the practice as Delaney was actually a companion animal vet. But Barry felt needed to be versatile in a small practice. So Delaney was out doing farm animal calls as Barry had been called out on an emergency. Delaney was going to White Raven ranch. On arriving she met the ranch owner Leif. Leif wants her to set a bald eagle’s broken wing. Leif had been in Afghanistan and he was changed when he came back there was a sadness about him. Leif became a lone wolf and didn’t belong to any pack [ he was a wolf shifter]. Leif didn’t believe in one mate for the rest of your life. Nor did he believe in sharing his women with his five brothers. But the way his body was reacting to Delaney he definitely planned on having her in his bed. But Leif was a broken man and he knew it. Delaney did accompany Leif to Bozeman when the eagle needed to be taken there to be treated. Leif used his helicopter. Delaney did sleep with Leif but woke up alone. When Delaney and Leif were having lunch Leif’s oldest brother Wyatt was there. Wyatt was a butt. Wyatt decided he wanted Leif to share Delaney and told Leif in an ordering type way to bring Delaney to dinners so everyone could see and meet her.
I enjoyed this story would have liked it a little longer with more detail and insight especially to the characters. Like what is Delaney’s back story? The characters just need a bit more to them. I did like Delaney and felt bad for the sadness in Leif. I also like that Leif will not share Delaney with his brothers in a sexual way. Maybe the next story will be more complete.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Delaney is new in town. She is a Vet who will be taking over a practice from a retiring Vet. A few days after she arrives, she goes out on a call and meets Leif. There is an instant attraction between the two.

Leif is a wolf shifter and Delaney a human. Leif called in because of an eagle with a broken wing. She stabilizes the bird but he needs special care and the closest facility is a four hour drive each way. She asks Leif if he would take the bird but he has a better idea, they will use his helicopter which will cut the time over half.

After situating the eagle, they leave to go back home and on the way home they stop to get a bite to eat. One of Leif's brothers come in, Wyatt, and there is instant tension to be felt between Leif and his brother Wyatt. They chat for a few minutes, with Wyatt giving Delaney plenty of attention. He leaves them with an invite for Leif and Wyatt to come to dinner with the rest of the brothers.

Leif withdraws a bit after that, which has Delaney wondering but eases up as they travel home. She gives in to the attraction and spends the night with him...

Is this attraction between them one that will last? What is his issue with his brothers? Will they sabotage his relationship?

Leif was a good man and he really cares about Delaney. They are very compatible but he cannot live the lifestyle his brothers want him to and if she wants to then he cannot be with her.

The writing in this book is good but I just didn't care for the premise of sharing a mate. This is a different spin on shifters and I didn't care for it. I think this could have been a much better

The ground work is there for a really great story, but it just kind of fell flat. I loved the idea that shifters don't have to hide who they are and I even loved the distinction between pack mates and litter mates. However, I wish there had been more depth to the characters. I do realize that this is a very short novella, but it was difficult to connect with the characters, to empathize with them, or even to really like them. There was so little about them to go on, they had so little personality. Frankly, the only character that felt real to me was the dog, Buddy. Everyone else was very one dimensional.

Writing wise, I found there was a lot telling rather than showing. I don't want an author to just tell me something because they feel it needs to be told, I want them to show it to me and let me draw my own conclusions! Some of the dialogue felt forced or awkward, like who the fuck says, "that was most enjoyable," after getting freaky? It made me think of someone describing sex in very clinical terms... not great to find in my romance/erotica/whatever genre you want to throw this one into. Thankfully, I didn't run across a crap load of editing issues--with the other issues I had with this read, editing would have dumped it into the DNF category.

I really wish I could give this story a better review. I really wanted to like it. I did like the concept, but in practice it just fell so short, almost as if huge chunks of the story are missing. I would love to see this story expanded. I would definitely give it another go if the author were to turn it into a full-fledged novel!

Unlike some stories where they hide the truth, in Clarke’s world shifters are commonly known and accepted. They even use their special abilities to help their communities, which I think is nice because it shows that they have something to offer the world. This is a short read, introducing Delany and Leif and their friends/family, so that also helps because it cuts out some explanation time :)

I do wish there had been more time spent on Leif’s healing over what caused him to be separated from his brothers. It’s very important to the man he’s become and why he’s making the choices he is, so it needs proper handling. While there is resolution (and good explanation) I just wish there had been a little more because it really is that important for him and complicates his life & his romance with Delany.

Clarke does a great job of giving us relatable characters and a plot that, while simple, is enjoyable. The language is a bit … blue, I think, is the term for it. And the sex is graphic but none of it is overly kinky. Which means that it isn’t going to be for everyone, but it is a good choice for those who like paranormal erotica.

Lone Wolf: The Wolf Shifters of Raven Ridge: Book One, is the first book in the series about a small town full of wolf shifters, as the name implies. We start the series with a sexy rancher named Leif Pierce. He calls out for a vet and gets Delaney Nichols. Delaney is filling in for another vet, and shows up at the ranch not quite knowing what to expect as she's used to dealing with smaller animals, especially as she herself is so petite. When Leif sees the petite, curvy vet, sparks fly. And Delaney herself is quite attracted to the sexy rancher.

But Leif has his demons, and quite a reputation to boot. Delaney is warned from the outset, but can't seem to help herself. But when Leif's brothers, who fully expect him to share in the wealth, come sniffing around, what will happen with Delaney? And will she stick around to deal with his demons on top of his four brothers? You'll have to pick up a copy and find out.

I absolutely enjoyed this book, and thought Leif was positively hot. I almost wish we could have explored that dominant side of his a bit more, but all in all, a definite keeper.

A tiny redheaded veterinarian in Montana falls for a rancher while treating an injured eagle. If only life was that simple. Sigh.
It doesn’t matter where you set a romance novel, or what kind of fantasy character you put into it (in this case a wolf shifter, of which there’ve been a lot lately); in the end you know there can only be one outcome, regardless of how many obstacles are randomly thrown at them. What I did find amusing was how in this story’s universe shifters are known and accepted.
The prose quickly left me bored. Every other paragraph talks about how much she wants him; I didn’t understand her any more than him. He’s of course an alpha who tries really hard not to fall for her, for one of the few reasons ever used in these kinds of books.
This had possibilities–different settings and circumstances that gave it a chance–but those were thrown away to make it generic, so that by the end it was nothing special.

I gravitated towards this book for a couple of reasons, a) I'm quite fond of PNR and b) once upon a long time ago, I was a practising vet. Unfortunately for me, hunks of the likes of Lief were non existent on the ground:(

(And here's where I'd insert a Liev Schreiber/Sabretooth gif - pun intended, but really couldn't be arsed to find a decent one)...

So, my thoughts... Nice timewaster aka quick read, however Del''s naivete grates on my nerves, as does the shallow plot and the utterly unrealistic wham, bam I insta-love you ma'am. Wish the shifter element could have been played up - there's only so much running one can do. Having said that, I did like the changing POV's as well as the authors take on orgies...

FYI: ARC from Netgalley

P.S. Book two (Wild Wolf) is much better re: the shifter element, heroine's still a wuss though...

Delaney and Leif.
Delaney is a veterinarian who isn't looking for love. She's concentrating on her career. But when she goes to fill in for Barry, her boss, at a ranch she finds the most incredible Man she's ever seen.
Leif is a guy who just does one night stands, that's it. So when Delaney comes around and his wolf starts going crazy, you can probably see why it startles him.
But there's a problem, his brothers wants him to share her, can he do it, but the most importent part what does Delaney say about all of that?!
This book is well written and the author sucks you in from the beginning and she keeps you there. The plot of the story is very good! And it's a fantastic start to a series! Can't wait for the next one.
So would I reread this book? yes. absolutely
Do I recommend this book? yesI do!

This was a relatively short read that had a big time romance jammed into a smaller package. There's shifters, family drama, and some sizzling chemistry.

Delany has just moved into town to become a country veterinarian when a housecall brings her to Leif's ranch. He's got oodles of baggage leftover from his time overseas and has become something of a loner (with the exception of a woman to warm his bed most nights). Even with that warning, Delany still can't deny the attraction between them. What begins as just a one night stand grows into so much more than either intended. This standalone story gives a good, solid HEA that is worth any drama leading up to it.

I really disliked this book. I enjoy shifter stories and I enjoy bbw stories and I enjoy cowboy stories, so it seemed like a good bet. But the whole thing was absurd. There didn't really seem any connection between them at all, and the entitlement coming from his brother was nauseating. He sees his brother with a woman and all of a sudden he has decided that she's their mate for life? Without ever talking to her and checking to see if she has any interest in being part of this absurdity?

I despised the utterly unclever nicknames, the manufactured drama and the complete lack of chemistry. Also at one point in time they left dinner, walked to a theater and talked about eating dinner nearby... Lack of attention to detail to such a large degree is unforgivable.

I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.

This book was a nice, quick read and I really liked it. The beginning was funny when Delaney's first meets Leif: I was surprised she didn't combust on the spot. Leif and Delaney have great chemistry and the sex scenes are hot enough to steam up your windows.

I liked the narrative which was innovative and intriguing. The book is written from both Leif and Delaney's perspective which is great. Leif's perspective gave you a good insight into his emotions. He's a free spirit and shape shifting into a wolf suited his character.

Great short book and I really enjoyed it.

This was a very quick read. Delaney and Leif were okay characters but something seemed missing to solidify my connection to the characters. Maybe while running from what was plaguing him, Leif could have had memories or flashbacks to help the reader connect with him. This could have helped bring out more character in Delaney too. The brothers seemed nice enough, but there really isn't much to them either.

I think this is a good start, but it is missing depth that would cause the reader to be compketely drawn into the story.

Adult language and situations cause this book to be for 18+

This is a really short story but it certainly packs a punch! I just loved the interaction between Delaney and Leif and it wasn't dragged out. Leif lost his brother to war and he really has had a hard time of it until he meets Delaney. Delaney has heard the rumors of Leif being a player and she isn't sure she wants to have her heart broken. Leif's brothers want to share her and he feels like she is his mate but Leif keeps leaving her because he has s having a hard time with the loss of his brother. The writing in this story makes you feel like you are part of it and when the rest come out I will be sure to get them.

Wow, what a weird book. It started out good, grabbed my attention. Then it just got weird. The shifter part had no relevance whatsoever in the book, there was the whole thing about sharing with his brothers which also made no sense, and a bunch of other crazy drama that was sloppily thrown in there. I was about to label this as DNF when I realized the book had only a chapter left! I seriously read like 7 other books while I was reading this one, just to try to finish it. Needless to say, I do NOT recommend this book.

This was a short shifter story that had a lot of angst to it. Leif was a bit too arrogant and unreliable. The reason is revealed towards the end of the book but by then I had a hard time wanting to root for him. I actually thought his brothers were a better option for Delany. I wasn't really believing they were mates with the way they talked to each other. It just felt more like lust than love. Once Leif got his emotions together, the ending was very sweet.

I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I loved reading this and can't wait to read more and find out what happen to Leif's brother in finding their mate. Leif has to call the local Vet but doesn't expect to get Delany Nichols. Not expecting to find his mate and love Leif is finding it hard to deal with the secrets of his past. He has separated himself from his brothers and anything emotional. Will Delany find her way into his heart? Will she want to only be with Leif or shared with his brothers?

This was a very fast and easy read, it was fun and enjoyable for the type of book that it was. I thought that it had potential to be really good, especially towards the beginning of the story. I've never been a big fan of insta love but it's to be expected in a very short story of this genre. I feel like some elements involving the brothers in the story should have just been completely left out and the story didn't really revolve much on the whole shifter element. With all that being said I enjoyed the book for what it was.

This is a short read about a lone wolf who finds a hurt eagle and calls in the new vet in town to help. In this novella wolves live in families and one girl is expected to have sex with all of them. Leif has been involved in the war in Afghanistan and grown away from his family owning his own ranch and wanting nothing to do with his family and sharing his girl. Delany looks at life from both sides and makes her decision.

This was a thoroughly engrossing read. It is a short read which is great if that’s what you are looking for. I loved watching the characters develop, and with few if any typos you can’t help but to love it. This was my first Tessa Clarke book, and I’m looking forward to reading her next book in The Wolf Shifters of Raven Ridge book Wild Wolf.

It was okay but I didn't really connect to either character. Also, the dialogue was a little off and there was a subplot involving his brothers that didn't contribute anything to the story and seemed forced. Forgettable.

So glad that Leif was a lone wolf. Glad that this did not turn into a menage a trois story!
